The Hateful Eight (2015)
Disgustingly amazing
The Hateful Eight is a great movie--it's indisputable. The acting, writing, soundtrack, cinematography, and story are spectacular. I saw it in 70mm and had a blast. The entire audience was rolling in laughter and applauding in the middle of the movie. Tarantino definitely does a great job at making a taboo subject hilarious. The only reasons I can think as to why someone would think this movie is BAD is-
1: It's long. Yes The Hateful Eight is over three hours long. Kinda like Seven Samurai, the first half of the movie is pretty slow and contains a lot of build up (but is still very entertaining). Then the second half is just a sheer explosion of badassery. I believe the length is completely necessary, even after watching it a second time.
2: It's visually disturbing. This is probably Tarantino's most violent film, so I can respect why some people may shy away when they see one's (INSERT BODY PART) get blown off. There's also some other disturbing parts, one in particular, that I don't want to spoil.
That being said, I do believe this film was very unique and awesome. If you have a chance to watch it in 70mm do it!
Rock the Kasbah (2015)
thoroughly disappointed
Rock the Kasbah had such an awesome cast, it's unfortunate that it sucked ass. The writing was plain terrible. There were too many instances of Bill Murray squeezing cheesy jokes in the worst places-- not that it's his fault, Bill Murray's the man--but his part was written horribly. This was also one of the only movies I've ever seen where I found the cinematography particularly bad. There were many unnecessary cuts between angles of a scene that completely killed the flow, especially on the plane scene towards the beginning. The movie did have a few funny and enjoyable moments, but if you're expecting a good flick I'd recommend to sit this one out.
Black Mass (2015)
Meh.. A "less good" version of Goodfellas..
Black mass is a decent flick, but by no means is it anything more than decent. Nothing stood out at all; the acting was fine, the story was fine, and the soundtrack was terrible in my opinion. The music sounded like it belonged in a Bourne movie. All of the "plot-twists" that were supposed to feel surprising didn't feel very surprising. It was completely obvious when something bad was going to happen to someone, unlike other gang movies like Goodfellas or Godfather.
If your not too picky and want to watch some decent gang action and drama then you will likely enjoy this movie, but if your a movie snob like me I would recommend passing on this one.
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Fight Club meets Goodfellas
The Wolf of Wall Street wasn't made for everyone - in fact I think it's safe to say it wasn't made for most people - BUT for the people who can handle a little (a lot) of sex and nudity and such, they will be rewarded with one of the greatest flicks of the decade.
This movie soars in the wildest and most unpredictable directions. Right off the bat we're presented with crazed office workers tossing midgets into a large Velcro target. And the madness doesn't stop there...
The acting and writing compliment each other perfectly in this film. Leonardo DiCaprio was simply spectacular. He basically made his role his b**ch. In fact, almost the entire cast made their role their b**ch. And the dialogue was so enjoyable. Nearly every word exiting any characters mouth was either funny or interesting or both!
Now stop reading this review, and watch the freaking movie.
Death Proof (2007)
Some Badass Bitches!
Simply a weird movie. You feel almost as if you were zapped through a time machine that was partially broken.
Story (8/10) The story is certainly original. A stuntman using his car to murder women in their cars? Nothing else like it.
Acting (8/10) Kurt Russell basically made his role his bitch! Not much else to be said. The girls did a fine job as well, nothing extraordinary but they sold their characters.
Sound(10/10): Pretty much any Tarantino movie will have a kickass soundtrack, this one is no different. The music blends perfectly with the visuals, especially the lap dancing scene, it was epic...
Dialogue(8/10): I see a lot of people complain about how boring the dialog is. These people are idiots. The dialog overall is funny and realistic, pretty much what you'd expect of what a group of immatureish women talk about. Plus Kurt Russell's role of stuntman mike was written to perfection. He seamlessly appears and talks like a normal down to earth guy, although at the same time he looks and acts as if he were some sort of creepazoid(not sure what that means but that's what he was).
Overall Awesomeness (8/10) If you enjoy movies that are packed with moments where you ask yourself "what the hell just happened?" then chances are you'll dig this flick. And if you're a fan of Tarantino and you haven't seen this, then your not a fan of Tarantino.
