Johnny Bravo...
12 April 2018
I love this show. The show has its roots in a short made by series creator Van Partible. This prototype for Johnny Bravo (called Mess O' Blues) is considered partially found media (on the Lost Media Wiki (https://lostmediawiki.com/Home)). This series is where Butch Hartman (creator of The Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom, Tuff Puffy, and Bunsen is a Beast) and Seth MacFarlane (creator of Family Guy, American Dad, and The Cleveland Show) got their start. As can be expected from such talent on the team, the show is witty, funny, and all around awesome (I've got to find a new word to express my feelings).

The Eds...

Ed Edd 'n Eddy was my favorite Cartoon Network show as a kid. That is saying a lot, considering Cartoon Network was and is my favorite channel. I would go into more detail, but I can't do it justice. So, check it out for yourself.

The Powerpuff Girls Movie...
12 April 2018
I have to admit, I did not see this movie in theaters. Instead, I caught it on Cartoon Network after the initial release. So, it is the Powerpuff Girls formula we all know and love, but it does take a darker tone. I like the animation, the story, and even the darker tone. It is the perfect origin story for me (and the Youtuber RebelTaxi (also known as Pan Pizza)). It's a shame the movie bombed its theatrical release. But, we still got more episodes of the classic show.

P.S. I'll have to check out the 2016 reboot series for myself. I hear it can't compare with the classic, but maybe it can stand on its own better than I hear.

The Powerpuff Girls (1998–2004)

So, it's time to review The Powerpuff Girls...
12 April 2018
This show is one of the reason why I would usually choose Cartoon Network over Nickelodeon has a kid. Sure, Nickelodeon had Jimmy Neutron, Spongebob Squarepants, the Fairly OddParents, My Life as a Teenage Robot, Chalk Zone, Oh Yeah Cartoons, and Ren and Stempy; however, Cartoon Network had some of my favorite all time shows like Ed Edd 'n Eddy, The Powerpuff Girls, Johnny Bravo, Megas XLR, Teen Titans, Hanna Barbera classics like the Jetsons; the Flintstones; Wacky Races; Josie and the Pussycats; Scooby Doo; etc. , the Looney Tunes, and programming blocks like Toonami; Cartoon Cartoons; Carton Cartoons Fridays; etc. Speaking of those programming blocks, I also preferred the bumpers Cartoon Network would use with them; for example, Toonami had Tom (who was the successor to Moltar).

But, on to the point, the Powerpuff Girls was a big part of my childhood. I admit I was embarrassed to watch or speak of the show in public, but I grew past that. So yeah, if you haven't seen the original Powerpuff girls, you should check them out.

P.S. Mojo Jojo is the best villain in the show. He's right next to Princess Morbucks, the Rowdyruff Boys, and that Powerpuff Girls collector (you know the one in that single episode).

So, Jimmy Neutron...
11 April 2018
This movie is great. Jimmy Neutron was planned as a TV show from the start, but Nickelodeon executives show more potential as a movie, due to the rise of CGI at the time. Jimmy Neutron started out as 2 demos called Johnny Quasar, released in 1995 and 1997.

What can be said...
11 April 2018
But, the show is really good. It's an invention of the week cartoon. Jimmy Neutron is not a rip off of Dexter's Lab. For starters, the prototype of Jimmy Neutron, Johnny Quasar, was shown as early as 1995. Second, the characters are handled in a totally different way.

So yeah, good show.

Danny Phantom (2003– )

Here we go...
11 April 2018
Danny Phantom (from the creator of the Fairly OddParents) follows Danny Fenton, who after an accident in his ghost hunting parents lab, became half ghost. While in ghost form, he assumes the name Danny Phantom, and fights evil ghost using his powers and parent's technology. Jazz is his sister, Maddie his mother, and Jack his father. With the help of his friends Tucker and Sam, Danny tries to fight ghost and live a normal high school life.

There are plenty of good characters like Vlad, an evil ghost hybrid. Dannie Phantom, a female clone of Danny. Ember, an evil rock star ghost. And, the Box Ghost, a ghost that controls all boxes, just to name a few.

The show has great character interactions and is funny too.

The Fairly OddParents (2001–2017)

Well...
11 April 2018
The Fairly OddParents started life as a series of shorts on Oh Yeah! Cartoons. The show lasted many years, has had many great characters introduced, and has some made-for-TV movies. In the beginning, Timmy Turner often made selfish wishes, which often went wrong in unintended ways. These days, Timmy is wiser with his fairies (Cosmo and Wanda) and often wishes to help friends and family.

Poof is Cosmo and Wanda's baby. Sparky is Timmy's pet fairy dog. While Chloe, is Timmy's neighbor, who has to share his fairies. Jorgen Von Strangle, was originally an antagonist, but has become a powerful ally.

Vicky, was first introduced way back in the pilot episode on Oh Yeah! Cartoons. She was and is Timmy's evil babysitter. Vicky often served as the shows main antagonist in the being. Mr. Crocker was introduced shortly after, as Timmy's crazy fairy hunting teacher. Francis (the school bully) hasn't played much of a role as a main antagonist, but has been one in select episodes. Dark Laser (a Darth Vader parody) was introduced as a villain, which Timmy gave life to (due to a wish complication). There is also the anti-fairies. There is one anti-fairy for every fairy in the universe, each one being the exact opposite of his or her counter part. Foop (Anti-Cosmo and Anti-Wanda's baby) is the opposite of Poof. The pixies are just as magical as fairies, but they treat magic as a business.

The cast also consist of Timmy's mom and dad, who were neglectful at first, but became more of characters throughout the shows run. Chester and AJ are Timmy's best friends. Elmer and Sanjay are Timmy's backup friends. Tootie is Vicky's little sister, and she has a crush on Timmy. The Crimson Chin is a comic book super hero Timmy brought to life, and Timmy became his sidekick. Juandissimo is Wanda's ex-boyfriend. Trixie, Veronica, Tad, and Chad are the popular kids. Mark Chang (an alien prince of a powerful warrior race) once served as an antagonist, but is now Timmy's ally and friend.

The cast is great and well balanced. The humor is funny, the designs are nice, and the show is great.

What can I say...
11 April 2018
One of the highlights of Spongebob Squarepants. This movie (made for theaters) has animation better than the TV show at the time, and is super funny and kind of emotional at times.

Oh Yeah! Cartoons (1998–2002)

Oh Yeah! Cartoons
11 April 2018
Oh Yeah! Cartoons is where some of Nickelodeons greatest shows started. The big three were Fairly Odd Parents, My Life as a Teenage Robot (or as it was known in those days My Neighbor was a Teenage Robot), and Chalk Zone. It was a compilation of shows (mostly if not all comedy). There were usually 3 shorts in each half hour episode. It was hosted by live action stars (I think they were Nickelodeon stars of the time). Many shorts never made it past Oh Yeah! Cartoons, and most only had 1 short. I'm giving this a perfect score because or 3 reasons: (1) it deserves it for being the start of 3 great shows (2) many of the shorts not part of the big three were still great and (3) Many of the shorts produced for it remained exclusive to Oh Yeah! Cartoons (even the some episodes made for Fairly Odd Parents). Also, many of the pilots for the shows that did make it, were either re-animated for the standalone shows or reduced to being referenced only in the standalone shows.

Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi (2004–2006)
9/10
Pretty Awesome Show!
11 April 2018
Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi follows a fictional cartoon version of real life Japanese Pop stars Puffy (known as Puffy AmiYumi in America due to branding conflicts). The cartoon versions of the characters are not really based on the actual band, but Puffy does appear in the episodes in live action segments. While you could replace the characters with any generic Pop star cartoon characters, the cartoon holds up on its own. The humor was usually great, and things tended to get very crazy (but typically in a good funny way). I also liked the art style. The stories were usually passable, and the characters were generic tokens, but they were acceptable and slightly above average in terms of token characters. I liked the music in the show, and they referenced a lot of stuff. However, what makes me as a guy so into the show was probably 3 things (1) I like things most people consider bad or ugly (2) I don't mind guys enjoying girls cartoons (or cartoons with a female lead) as long as the cartoon is entertaining and/or they can connect with the characters and not something they're getting enjoyment out of for the wrong reason (especially when it comes to cartoons for little girls) and (3) I have a habit of liking shows that most people don't.

Worth Checking Out...
21 January 2018
This movie has two English dubs, the first called Micro Commander Diatron 5 and the second called Space Transformer. Space Transformer has a better dub and scoring, but Diatron 5 has some of the dialog changed, so is slightly different. Diatron 5 also has a opening theme and scene. The beginning of the movie was dubbed a third time in the movie Space Thunder Kids. Both dubs are above average, and worth checking out at least once. If you only want to watch one dub of this movie, than watch the Space Transformer version as it is the better dub, with better dubbing, scoring, and English.

Good animation and character design, somewhat okay story, and a badly done message.
19 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The animation and character design is actually pretty good. The story is also somewhat okay. But, the problem is that this movie has a save the rain forest message that interferes with the story. It's not nearly as bad as a Captain Planet episode in that regard, but considering this is a movie, it takes up much of the story. I will say that it is worth a watch. In fact, I had to watch it in my high school Geography class. But there lies the problem, this movie wants to be a PSA or Educational movie, but has fairies, talking animals, and an evil monster villain. It treats humans as the devil. Also, most of what would be a okay story is taken up by obvious save the rain forest propaganda. The propaganda just feels like filler, too. It's not educational, and technically doesn't even count as a PSA.

A parody cartoon pilot... I still don't enjoy it much though.
12 June 2017
This pilot is just boring.

Normally I would give a summary of either the pilot or go into detail about the series, but this pilot gives me a headache. So I'll just say the characters are unlikable and the plot is stupid. The animation is horrible as well. Normally I have a soft spot for stuff like that, but I honestly cannot recommend this to anyone.

Edit: I'm going to raise the score from a 2 to a 4 because, while I still stick to what my original review said, I think that there a some small redeeming factors.

First, the show attempts to have a somewhat parodic view of artistic. Second, the show also has a somewhat parodic look at how artists see people who disagree with their art and lifestyle. Third, the animation, which basically stop motion CGI, is (I guess) a somewhat artistic choice rather than bad style. Fourth, the character who mocks artist does sing a song about money, which (I guess) was used as a ironic joke. Fifth, while the character, background, and prop designs weren't the best, I think that went with the idea of the show being a parody of certain artistic lifestyles. Sixth, the show is made by an actual artist. Finally, I find it amusing that an artist decided to make a parodical cartoon of an extreme stereotypical lifestyle some artist actually have.

So, in conclusion, if you realize that the show is a parody, it can be more enjoyable. In addition, while I still didn't find the show that enjoyable, I can still see how some people can.

Pryde of the X-Men (1989 TV Movie)
9/10
Good show...
12 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Pryde of the X-Men is a good show. This pilot, which aired in the 1980s, didn't get picked up for a full fledged series.

The episode starts with a pretty decent theme that reuses footage found later in the episode. Magneto is being transported by the military, when he and an officer has a battle of racism. The White Queen casts an image of the trucks sinking in quicksand, which makes the military freak out. Meanwhile, Kitty Pryde is arriving at the mutant academy. Professor X cast an image of himself to guide Kitty to him. We are introduced to the X-Men and their powers. But, it seems there is an emergency and the X-Men leave Kitty and Professor X to be attacked by the Juggernaut and Magneto. The X-Men arrive to see theit home in ruins and Kitty and Professor X knocked out. Blah Blah blah the X-Men stopped Magneto evil plans, but it seems Nightcrawler must die, only he doesn't.

The episode is very campy. Also Stan Lee stops the episode a few times to give us the exposition and act number. Wolverine is also more grumpy than angry. Kitty is whiny. The story isn't as good as the 90s or 2000s X-Men.

The voice talent is once again all stars. The animation is great. The story is interesting, and the characters aren't totally unlikeable. There are also some redeeming factors to Kitty and Wolverine. Basically, this show is a pretty fun watch.

A pretty meh cartoon...
12 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island is an overall meh cartoon.

First of all Coconut Fred is a ripoff of Spongebob Squarepants. While ripping off a show doesn't make another bad, Coconut Fred doesn't know anger, pain, suffering, sadness, or worry. This problem compounds itself because Fred has god-like powers. Those who are with Fred make it through the episode fine, and those who don't make it through half dead. Most of the characters fears Fred (even one of his friends). Fred also is the cause of nearly all the shows problems and he is almost always the one who fixes the problems. Fred, like Bubsy, has a catchphrase, "Yay me!" While Fred's catchphrase is never used as much as Bubsy's in a single episode, it is still nonetheless ironic considering he is basically both the god of destruction and god of creation.

Coconut Fred has at least 1 all star voice actor, and the watch isn't terrible. Overall the show's greatest fail is that it is just an average watch. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Battletoads (1992 TV Short)
8/10
Another decent, but dated cartoon...
9 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The Battletoads cartoon pilot, which aired alongside the Bubsy cartoon pilot on Thanksgiving 1993, is pretty decent.

In it 3 trouble making friends, Morgan Ziegler, George Pie, and Dave Shar, are banned from hanging out with each other by their principle. The 3 teens then try to make new friends, however, the other students only find them annoying. Meanwhile, a space princess, Princess Angelica, and her alien bird professor friend, Professor T. Bird, are escaping an evil space queen, known only as the Dark Queen. The 3 trouble making teens end up becoming "intergalactic superheroes (the Battletoads)." The 3 teens end up getting Princess Angelica a job and asking T. Bird to fix a sports car. Princess Angelica gets captured and the heroes save her. The principle sees the heroes hanging out and tells them they are suspended, the teens informs him that they are in fact "intergalactic heroes" which makes the principal think they are insane. The teens transform into their Battletoads form, which the principal takes as them being "evil freaks" and the toads are surprised that they didn't get a better result. The Dark Queen attacks and the Battletoads save the day. When the toads ask if they are still in trouble, the principal says no, and tries to suggest that the idea wasn't his. The principal meets the professor, who mistakes a pen for a teleporter, and sprays the principal in the face with blue ink. Princess Angelica tells the toads they're her heroes and hugs them. The toads high five in a freeze frame with the words "The Beginning..." showing.

The show is heavily inspired by the 1980s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon series (even having its head writer the same). It also uses a lot of surfer lingo and even has a surfer theme. The animation can be a little rubbery and inconsistent at times. The designs of the characters are also slightly off from their video game counterparts. There is also some voice acting that is over done a bit. The show also has some catch phrases that are not the best. Finally, like the Bubsy pilot, even for 1993 parts of the pilot seems a little dated.

That being said there are a lot of good things too. The animation company (Dic) actually has done some pretty notable animation work. A few examples are, most of the Mario cartoons, Captain N: The Game Master, most of the early Sonic cartoons, the Zelda cartoon, and The Real Ghostbusters cartoon. Also the show had some great voice talent. Again, like Bubsy, even though the show has a lot of problems, I still find it enjoyable. Finally, I think the with the new Battletoads (reboot) game announced, that the cartoon series can also be rebooted into something more enjoyable for a wider audience. Overall, I have to say that this cartoon pilot is still good, but slightly worse than the Bubsy pilot.

Bubsy (1993 TV Movie)
8/10
A very decent, but dated pilot...
9 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This pilot, which aired on Thanksgiving 1993 alongside the Battletoads pilot, is very decent.

The Bubsy cartoon pilot starts out with an intro that doesn't use footage found elsewhere in the episode. After the intro, we see Bubsy Bobcat wake up his unwilling sidekick, an armadillo named Arnold, who has a fear of being ran over by a truck (and was having a nightmare about it). Arnold fears Bubsy more than a truck, however. Bubsy's twin niece and nephew, Teresa and Terrence Bobcat, are visiting him for their birthday. They harass Arnold. Bubsy not noticing his friend is scared, turns on the TV to the news, when the anchor is finishing up a story of armadillos being ran over by trucks. This makes Arnold freak out, and he curls into a ball. The twins thinks he wants to play, so they use him as both a basketball and bowling ball. The news goes on to a story about an scientist and his assistant, Virgil Reality and Oblivia, who invented a helmet that can alter reality. Bubsy then says he wants to test the helmet. When asked why, Bubsy gives a speech complete with black and white live action stock footage. However, it seems a female fat cat, named Ally Cassandra, who is the show's main villain, was watching too. She quickly calls for her henchmen, Sid the Vicious Shrew and Bozwell Buzzard, who quickly comes. Ally tells the duo to steal the helmet. Bubsy meanwhile, makes it to Virgil's lab after calling to test the helmet. Oblivia answers the door, and she gets Bubsy's name wrong. Bubsy asks how the helmet works, and Virgil tells him. Bubsy goes on to wish he could fly, which causes him to fall from a great height along with the the rest of the cast. Arnold ends up with the helmet and his fear of trucks takes over. Bubsy grabs the helmet and has everyone (minus Arnold) sent back to the lab. Arnold then crashes through the roof. The twins end up with the helmet and greedily wish for birthday presents. Sid and Bozwell come flying in, only for Sid to get injured instead. Bubsy realizing that the twins must have the helmet, goes outside to look for them. Finding the twins have turned the area into a carnival, Bubsy gives another speech before getting hit and dragged by the coaster car, with Sid and Bozwell already seated in the coaster car. Both Virgil and Oblivia run away. Bozwell and Sid get sick, while Bubsy orders the twins to stop the coaster. The twins follow their uncle's orders, but the Bozwell, Sid, Bubsy, and Arnold fly off. The twins (who made themselves giant with the helmet) step on Bubsy and Arnold. Bubsy scolds the twins, who cry because its their birthday. Bozwell and Sid get the helmet and the twins. Ally now has the helmet, and Bozwell and Sid want to cook the twins. After getting upset, Bubsy cheers up and gets his motivation back. Virgil offers Bubsy a high tech device to track the helmet, but Bubsy opts to look up the villains in the phone book and call them. After out smarting Sid, Bozwell informs Ally of the situation. Ally tells Bozwell and Sid not to answer the door, but Bubsy out smarts Sid again. The helmet gets tossed back and forth, having both dreams and nightmares become reality. Bubsy gets the helmet, but it seems it is about to explode Bubsy, risking his own life as well all the other major characters in the show, he has the villains tied up by using the helmet. Oblivia gets Bubsy's name right. Bubsy gives yet another speech, and puts the helmet back on, but instead of exploding, it electrocutes Bubsy and Arnold ending the episode.

The show does rely on puns, running gags, and stock footage a lot. Also Bubsy's catch phrase is used a lot (it is even the name of the episode). 3 times in the pilot Bubsy gives a speech and with 3 different pieces of stock footage (meaning that there were 9 different pieces of stock footage in the one episode). Oblivia doesn't get Bubsy name right until the end of the episode and her name is a joke (literally). Virgil's name is also a pun. There are some other running gags like a truck gag, Bubsy abusing Arnold, and Sid being abused. The plot is silly too. The pilot is also a little dated, even for 1993. The villains weren't in the original game (the only one out at the time).

But the reason why I ranked it so high is because it is actually still fun to watch (for me at least). I can see that the show wasn't suppose to take itself real seriously. The show has all star voice talents. Also one could argue that the villains from the game (the Woolies) were meant to show up later in the series. Also, at least 1 of the villain designs and 3 of the heroes were used in Bubsy II (and at least another hero on the box art). I feel like, in terms of cartoons, Bubsy could certainly be rebooted into something much better for a wider audience, and with the new Bubsy (reboot) game coming out later this year, that might be a real possibility.
