Vida y milagros (2006)
Good Music + Great Musicians + Intimate Live Setting
Great Albert Pla songs played live by Pla himself and backed by a number of amazing Spanish musicians. The setting is small, and the video makes you feel like you are right in the audience with multiple camera angles being negotiated. A definite must see for fans of this unique artist. The play between the musicians really brings this video to life especially Pla and Judith Farres during "La Dejo o no la Dejo," song which finds its main character debating whether or not he should leave his terrorist girlfriend. Other highlights include "El Lado Mas Bestia de la Vida," Pla's rendition of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" where all of the musicians are introduced and do a small solo. If I am not mistaken, Diego Cortes does some amazing flamenco guitar throughout the performance. Highly recommended!
Maria Full of Grace (2004)
You call that an ending?!?
I just finished watching the DVD of Maria Full of Grace. I thought this was a well done movie until the ending. Are we supposed to believe that a pregnant 17 year old is supposed to make it in New York with no one and a wad of cash that will last her maybe a few months? The ending destroyed anything the movie had built up. All we are left with is a slow-mo halo-effect ending after she has decided not to go back to Colombia. Thats it!? What happens when she tries to have a baby? Does anyone care? I definitely cared until the movie ended. I was interested to see how she would survive in America. The movie was very believable, and then the ending comes to destroy it all.
