Issue: Unfortunately, it has occurred for a few times that the rank order for 1 movie unintentionally changed ’multiple positions’ when I added a new movie to the list... [EDIT: THIS ISSUE HAS NOW BEEN SOLVED]
Ratings including * imply that another viewing is necessary for a definitive ranking of the movie, because I missed some parts for a variety of reasons (e.g., I feel asleep for a few minutes.). This is the case for 63 movies. However, there is a possibility that the number is higher due to accidental omission. 1 rating with ** indicates that only the 1st part of the movie was seen in cinema [@ Pathé]

Reviews
Luca (2021)
Please do not take the short 1-star reviews too serious.
Luca is a great Pixar movie! It may not be groundbreaking or revolutionary for its genre, but it is still highly enjoyable. The story is interesting enough to make one care about what will happen next, even though one should not expect events that are outside of Pixar's comfort zone.
I did not cry at several highly liked movies of Pixar (e.g., Coco, Inside Out) and, fair enough, I did not cry at this movie either. However, I had a lump in my throat during the emotional scenes of Luca. For me, it is one of the more enjoyable Pixar movies, but I guess it is just a matter of personal taste in the end. So, please watch it yourself, and then decide whether the abundance of 1-star reviews is justfied! :)
P. S. I really like the Roman Holiday references in this movie! Maybe Luca shares some similarities with Elio? ;)
The Prom (2020)
Brief Review
Despite all of the glitter, glamour as well as the renowned cast, The Prom (2020) fails to become the Oscar contender it aspires to be. The subject matter is definitely worthy of attention, but this movie will probably not stay in your mind for long. An easy movie to watch that is close to deserving a failing grade.
The Sun Is Also a Star (2019)
Cringy for Me
Today I watched "The Sun Is Also a Star" without knowing anything about the movie. The movie poster only made me aware of the genre: a romantic teen movie. Hence, I immediately knew that I did not belong to its target audience. Thanks to my Pathé Unlimited Movie Pass, I decided to give it a chance anyway.
The most disappointing was the acting for me. The lead actor (Charles Melton) and lead actress (Yara Shahidi) lacked chemistry in my opinion. Furthermore, I did not feel many of their 'monologues' & emotional moments...
I am still wondering to what extent writing/directing had an influence on the acting quality though. Unfortunately I did not watch any other movies with these actors, so I am not sure whether they are bad actors in general haha.
Positive points for some beautiful shots and a fairly 'original' approach with regard to directing a teen romance movie. Am I the only one who thought director Ry Russo-Young got inspired by Adam McKay's latest movies (e.g., The Big Short)?
Most noteworthy for me is that I never cringed so much due to a combination of bad acting, writing and directing. So if you are not part of its target audience, be prepared to cringe! Teenagers may relate to some of the issues the characters are dealing with, but I would still avoid as a teenager if you do not like romance movies in general. :)
Us (2019)
TOO AMBITIOUS - MY INTERPRETATION "WE ARE OUR OWN WORST ENEMY"
CONCLUSION AT THE END OF THE REVIEW
Yesterday I watched Us under near-perfect circumstances for the ultimate horror experience. The cinema, with room for over 500 people, was then filled with barely a handful of people. My friend and I could take a "mid-mid" spot while having an entire row for ourselves. As I did not watch the movie trailer, I was not sure what to expect exactly. Nevertheless, I was ready to be blown away, as both Get Out and Lupita Nyong'o are fairly beloved by me.
The first part was great. As soon as the intriguing soundtrack started and the opening credits appeared, the potential to be as awesome as Peele's directing debut was clearly visible. Furthermore, there was a fine build-up towards the actual confrontation with the doppelgänger family. The first act made you want to invest in the story - hence, so far so good.
The creepy encounter has to be my favorite part. The image of the motionless intruders, along with the anxiety it evoked, was executed so well. The tension was really there... but evaporated quickly. After the weird conversation, the film reduces itself to one of many "run and hide" horrors for too long. Mildly entertaining, but not refreshing.
The end/twist was even unsatisfying for me, since credibility was sacrificed for shock value in my opinion. Still, the concept of the Tethered is fascinating. There are many theories and I would like to give my interpretation. "We are our own worst enemy" was a recurrent thought in my mind while watching. Our negative inner critic often 'kills' our self-growth; discouraging us to move our life forward and limiting our ability to take on new opportunities. In the worst case, we live our lives in our safe, narrow comfort zone - meaning we are basically dead.
Being connected with people who you care about is crucial to counter your Tethered one. This is in line with a scene in the movie. The other family was killed easily because there was too much self-interest and a lack of love present.
Still, a lot is not explained by this theory haha. Several cultural references (e.g., Hands Across America) as well as the phrase "We're Americans" steers towards an America-centered interpretation. My interpretation makes less sense considering this, but I love how a movie can lead to such a divergence.
Finally, I would like to mention that Lupita Nyong'o once again delivers a great performance. Still, she is likely to be forgotten by the Academy if even Toni Collette fails to achieve a nomination for her recent work in Hereditary(!). Elisabeth Moss was a pleasant surprise and unfortunately only had one brief moment to display her talent.
CONCLUSION: Despite being an ambitious successor, Us does not come close to Get Out. A lack of credibility negatively affects the feeling of experiencing something extraordinary. It is still worth a watch given the performance of Nyong'o as well as Us being more entertaining than most other horror movie attempts nowadays.
The Queen's Corgi (2019)
Perfect for its audience
Today I watched "The Queen's Corgi" together with approximately 20 other people. The majority of the audience were children, as was expected. Furthermore, a fluffy, cute lead was enough to satisfy these kids - as was expected.
The movie attempts to entertain their parents as well. For instance, there is an obvious 1999 film reference. This reference is actually connected with the story. Did the writer/director think that such a reference was enough to achieve satisfaction? I think it takes more than that to entertain the older audience.
Personally I truly consider the story to be flawed. Themes were all over the place. At first, I thought the theme would be obvious (conceited lead realizes that the world does not revolve around him). Nevertheless, this realization was not that visible in the end. It also tries to discuss, among others, the importance of solidarity, true love and class differences. Ambitious, but I do believe it was a bit too much for this movie to handle. The focus on solely one or two of these significant themes would be much better in my honest opinion.
Moreover, I had the feeling that parts of the movie were not connected at all. In the beginning, Wanda clearly tries to connect with Rex for non-romantic reasons and then suddenly she has developed true feelings for him. No explanation whatsoever! What was Wanda thinking? Rex did not change that much during that period, right?
Also, in the very beginning Rex is quite cocky (like Woody in Toy Story), but what does the movie want to tell us in the end? Accept it, since there
is a chance that a worse person replaces the cocky one? I truly missed personal growth from Rex - This has been executed so well in movies like Toy Story.
Nevertheless, in the end, does it really matter? The kids in the audience were clapping in the end. They really enjoyed some funny scenes! I watched a lot of (animated) movies in the cinema and rarely experienced an applause. Conclusion: Despite its flaws, it is perfect for its audience!
P.S. Do not watch the movie if you adore Trump. The director clearly does not portray him as a sharp person - lol.
