Coherence (2013)
Tripping and mind boggling
The movie started out messy and confusing. Conversations were diffused and contradicting. People were acting a bit awkward (maybe because they were drunk) and it was painful to see people trying to pull the pointless conversations through. The story escalated immediately after the cracked Phone screen of Huge and the power cut. Suddenly people realized that something unusual was happening so the uneasiness spread across the crowd. None of them at the time knew that once they went out, they would pass through some dark aisle and enter a different space. The movie traces the viewpoint of Em, who only came to realize that all the people in her surrounding were not those of her original world anymore. She first struggled to make her way back, but then she realized that there were too many parallel universes out there and she could never make it back. The people with her in the original world were also scattered. Therefore, she thought of leaving and to "invade" a good world where she was a successful dancer and her boyfriend was in love with her. Her searching for the new world stopped after she spotted this perfect world where people didn't even know about the parallel universe. She killed "the other her" and passed out. In the morning, everything seemed to lay out as she wished, until she shocked herself and the audience that now there are two Em in one world. The Em who belongs to the world did not even step out of her house (her phone was working proves that she was unaffected by the comet) and contacted Kevin. Now Kevin knows that the Em standing in front of him is a freaky stranger duplicate of his girlfriend. It is appalling to think about what's going to happen to the invader Em.
Spotlight (2015)
A riveting and educating movie
Right after the movie two thoughts popped up in my mind. First, journalists are serious about their career. To work in the journalism is a strong commitment in a bumpy road. Second, to have faith in work is hard. Good journalists genuinely believe in the values of their job. It's safe to say many live to work rather than work to live. ------------------ Spotlight team unveils the world-shaking scandal of the catholic church community in Boston. Investigation starts with an allegation of one priest and then the scandal got just more complex as the team dug deeper. Eventually nearly 90 priests in Boston were found to have a history of child molestation. The storyline unfolds into a revelation of the ugly protection of the convicts from the church. Before this movie, I rarely thought into the life of victims when I read about them in newspapers. Spotlight did a great job in showing the audience how much trauma the victims went through as their self-esteem, religious faith and sex views collapsed and twisted. The lawyer commented the survivors as the fortunate ones, as they at least survived. The cast of the movie had a natural and engaging delivery. The unnoticeable acting constructs people that are made of flesh-and-blood. No dramatic or heroic behaviour, but just busy, hard-working and emotional journalists who live on a good deal of junk food. The movie ends flat out as well. No campy music or special close-up of any character. Rapidly printing of the newspapers quietly celebrated the triumph.
Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta (1986)
No empire can stand without soil.
Almost every single animated movie by Hayao Miyazuki is both calming and intriguing. The story unpacks with Sheeta's accident to fall from the sky and then met the fixer boy Pazu. As the heir of the lost empire, Sheeta has special powers to control the flying stones and learned spells to exert the power of the stone. Laputa, the floating island in the sky developed much more advanced technology than human civilization and are known to have valuable treasures. While the treasures excited the sky pirates, another guy who belongs to the kinship on the island led the army to approach Laputa. Since Sheeta is thought to know the way to the hidden floating island. Both pirates and the military want to catch her, and of course our little boy is there to protect her, the little hero. Long with this small subhect its also embeded ecological values as the nature is the mother land and critical valus to human.
Big Hero 6 (2014)
Enjoyable and relaxing
Okay, let's first start with the pros. This movie successfully showcased how good the animation 3D technology can be. My friends and I quite enjoyed its overall quality. Also this movie has pretty much innovative elements in it, with some big high tech creations. Overall, it's a light hearted movie. I'm sure almost everyone can find it amusing. It is not perfect of course. First, seriously, all big hero movies have to start with a family tragedy? I understand revenge is an emotional treat and good for plot, but this seems to be forcing the sad parts in and I don't like that idea of big heroes all have to suffer from family loss. Apart from that, some jokes are kinda stiff. The big marshmallow bear's blalalala is pretty lame on my side. It certainly has good branding effect tho. I see big ad boards everywhere including the bus station at Zhongguancun, Beijing. In a nutshell, it's amusing, sort of funny, nice animation with fairly good character settings. You might enjoy it if not being too critical.
Black Mirror: White Christmas (2014)
Extremely cruel
The idea of cookie is appalling. I always believe that physical existence is not the way to describe a person-human beings are their memories and minds. If someone copies my mind, imprison it into a electronic egg, I would feel like it is me that has been trapped into this small box and I would feel bad imagining the other me being tortured in this way. It is just utterly cruel, while this episode apparently succeeded in demonstrating how technology can dehumanize people. In summary, black mirror is not a relaxing show, but it challenges the audience to think about how human beings can be fooled by their own inventions.
Interstellar (2014)
Terrific movie of years
Mesmerized by the sci-fi scenes, the great special effect and how humanities are portrayed explicitly.
Although everything still ends up quite smoothly (in some sense) and not much struggle was shown in the main characters, it's touching to see and believe that people are able to, or, have the potential to give up important life experiences to pursue what they are meant to.
I've always been told that the universe is unlimited. Human beings, are just some random vectors, together with other elements and organisms, that compose the picture. But as it is displayed in the movie, the universe exists not for itself but for those who can perceive it.
