Baby Daddy (2012)
Wow...
...And I thought Big Bang Theory was bad! This takes bad to a whole new level.
It seems like they took characters from other successful (not necessarily good) TV shows and created a Frankenstein's monster of awfulness.
They took douche-bag Ted from How I met your mother, added cliché characters such as The Dumb Jock, the Meddling Mother, the Ditzy Blonde, the Effeminate dwarf and crafted something more tired than 30 mothers of newborns.
It is so predictable that it could convince any viewer that they had psychic powers.
I don't know how it has been allowed to continue for more than one episode, it is embarrassingly bad. The only valid reason for watching this show is having been subjected to a 'Clockwork Orange' style treatment.
Please please cancel the show and erase all copies of it.
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency (2016)
Dr Who done it
This was an enjoyable show, I didn't know what to expect, but I found that I was unable to stop watching until the series concluded.
I did not read the books, nor see the original series, so I had nothing to compare it to, which is probably a good thing.
I like Elijah as a sidekick, he plays the role well (see Wilfred), but I do feel that the series is slightly let down by the casting of Dirk. He is just too annoying, like a parody of Dr Who, not endearingly annoying, just plain annoying. I understand that the character is meant to be slightly irritating, but I am sure other actors would be better suited to the role, and better bridge the line between annoying and amusing. (such as the guy from Brooklyn Nine Nine).
The overall story was good and maintained interest throughout the episodes. I look forward to the next series...
Lexx (1996)
Unsure, possibly missed potential
As the title suggests, I am not sure whether I like this show or not. I have watched the first 3 series so far and I still can't decide on it.
I have continued to watch it, so there must be something there, but it has not been a TV equivalent of a page turner.
Prior to watching the series I assumed that it would be a bigger budget and slightly erotic version of the UK Red Dwarf. I have been kind of let down by this assumption, the only thing that it shares with Red Dwarf is that it is set in space. I did think it was going to be funny, but it really is not, admittedly there are some amusing parts/dialogues, but on the whole it is more of a lighthearted space drama than a comedy set in space.
There is a lot of potential (or there was, I suppose) for interesting stories, comedic events and japes, but no advantage was taken of the stage. Obviously space adventure/travel with the benefit of faster than light movement makes for infinite possibilities of planets to explore, with potential for anything to be encountered.
I don't think that the writers used the above very well, they seemed to stick to human-like life forms (generally), which is easier to achieve in terms of costumes than elaborate creatures, but it does not make for an interesting universe. It was good to see that English has spread across the galaxies, no language barriers encountered, which is rather handy.
I really like the idea of Lexx, but I just think that there could have been so much more to it, it could have been a great Sci-Fi comedy.
I am still not really sure about the whole thing, the main characters are not the greatest (possibly through casting decisions? or script?). Stan is just not likable enough, nor funny, which I expected him to be either of the two. I can't tell whether Xev/Zev and Kai are bad actors or whether it is part of the characters' traits. Kai is dead, so it is fair enough that he is a bit wooden, but it still doesn't feel right. 790 is the most annoyingly pointless character I have ever witnessed, it genuinely adds nothing to the show other than managing to generate utter hatred from the viewers (or at least this viewer). The show would be far better if they had totally removed 790 from it, it is the same thing (possibly a joke?) over and over and it became unfunny within a minute of meeting the character.
Overall the show is worth a watch, but do not be expecting to laugh much (or at all). I think there is still plenty of scope for this show to be good (if it continued), but it is probably best to just start afresh with new actors and writers, oh, and maybe a new spaceship.
The Big Bang Theory (2007)
Show about geeks for morons
I had high hopes for this show, due to the show's title I expected this to bridge the gap between science and comedy. Sadly they got the formula wrong and decided to add the humour from a lecture on particle physics to the 'science' of fart jokes.
Whilst I appreciate the irony of the show being so formulaic, it does not lend itself well to a TV series.
It is neither funny nor clever, but it tries to be both.
The acting on the whole is pretty bad from the majority of the cast, very OTT, Bernadette is the worst culprit, she cant help but smirk as she delivers yet another 'hilarious' line, it is painful to watch. Penny is not much better, but I suppose initially she was cast as 'eye candy', so was not expected to be able to act properly anyway.
The show started badly, but somehow has managed to get progressively worse as the series have continued. The characters became parodies of themselves and even the script 'writers' gave up on even trying to make jokes. It has transformed from a tiresome comedy into a tiresome drama.
They still rely on some main jokes to guarantee viewer mirth: Howard - Tee hee, he is Jewish LOL Raj - Haha! He is Indian! OMG LMAO! Sheldon - Hohohoho, he is socially inept! Bazinga! Penny - No Way!!! She is a slut! Bernadette - Angry dwarf with squeaky voice! Classic! Leonard - He is short and cant drink milk! ROFL Amy - Female Sheldon, but with sexual desires! Too much!! etc etc
I really do not understand how this show is rated so highly and has been allowed to continue for so long considering how bad it is. It does show that either the general viewing public are toothless simpletons, or just that the majority of voters are toothless simpletons that have somehow managed to work a science box and make the electric words come on the glowy bit using the clicky thing and pressy button block.
Vikings (2013)
Not as good as GOT
This show is pretty good, but is not as epic as Game Of Thrones. Now, I understand that they are different in a lot of ways and probably should not be compared, but sod it.
I love the fight scenes, they seem to be well choreographed and there is enough gore to satisfy most blood hungry viewers. There is plenty of action and some good plot lines. To be honest from an aesthetic perspective the only thing missing is a bit of boob and bum (much like in GOT), which I am not sure why they did not include it, considering the violence & gore making this show only suitable for adult viewing.
I somehow feel slightly let down by the casting, Ragnar in particular, I just don't feel that he is a good enough actor for the role. He has a smugness to him which is off-putting, now I don't know if that was through intention or by accident, but personally I would rather see less of that look on his face. It reminds me of Brad Pitt when he became too annoying to watch due to his ego outgrowing his ability.
Katheryn Winnick is awesome in Vikings, she, along with the majority of the 'supporting cast' plays her role fantastically. She is a delight, both on the eye and in terms of her ability to make her character believable as a strong, fearless and intelligent warrior (or shield maiden). She does look a lot like a 'rich man's' Scarlett Johansson.
Overall this show is pretty good, with a few tweaks it could be amazing. I would recommend this to those that would like a show that is nearly half way between Game of Thrones and Spartacus (minus the boobage).
New Girl (2011)
What a Way-ans to ruin a show
When this show first started I was captivated by the delightful antics of quirky Jess and her flatmates. We journeyed together down a road of kookiness seeing mirth at every juncture. Then, during season 3 the road became bumpy, a wrong turn was taken and now we were facing the wrong Way-ans, heading straight towards cancelthisshowpleaseville. The show no longer had the dynamic which made it funny and watchable.
It is hard to pinpoint where the show messed up (season 3 EP 7), but somewhere along the line it changed, not for the better. I enjoyed season 1 and 2, but as the show continued the kookiness became less endearing and more annoying, other characters became parodies of themselves and the show lost it's charm.
I would recommend that you watch seasons 1 & 2 then pretend that they all died/moved/transformed into gerbils rather than forcing yourself to endure the other seasons, watching and waiting in the vain hope that it will get better again.
Melissa & Joey (2010)
Great apart from two things...
1) The scripts 2) The 'actors'
Thankfully there is a laughter track to let you know when a joke has been attempted. I grew up watching 'Sabrina the Teenage Witch' so I was aware of Melissa, but Joe is new to me. Animatronics have come a long way since the days of Salem the Cat, but as Joe proves, there is still a long way to go. Yes, he nearly looks real, but the 'acting' is where the technology falls short. I could see Joe doing very well if they ever made a TV series of Pinocchio as he has already managed to master the art of wooden acting.
The 'jokes' are more tired than a sloth on a Nytol drip, I will never complain about Royal Mail again after seeing how bad the delivery can be.
This show would suit audiences that either cant or don't want to think, ones that are just happy to watch the pretty colours on the screen and laugh when prompted. It is ideal for those that like to complete jigsaw puzzles with less than 10 pieces or who rate colouring by numbers as a challenging pursuit. For someone like myself this show was more painful viewing than staring at the sun through a telescope.
