Marple: The Sittaford Mystery (2006)
Terrible - A bad adaptation of a great story
I agree with all the other comments from Christie fans. It was terrible and especially disappointing for me as "The Sittaford Mystery" is one of my favourites. I was looking forward to a TV adaptation, even if they added Miss Marple to it.
There is not much I can add to the other comments - They changed the murderer for goodness sake, how much worse can it get!!. I especially disliked the weird camera angles as it made it even harder to watch.
I don't think it is the inclusion of Miss Marple that makes this adaptation so bad. She could have fitted quite well in the Sittaford Mystery if they hadn't so radically changed the plot. In the book the murder happens within the first few pages so to let it build up for an hour without much happening was a real drag.
Considering how well ITV adapt the Poirot novels it is a shame they've done so badly with Marple.
Marple: Sleeping Murder (2006)
Nothing like the book
If this had been a new story in the genre of Agatha Christie then this production wouldn't have been too bad. The performances were excellent and there was an good plot worthy of 2 hours Sunday evening entertainment. However, to try and pretend that it was actually based on Agatha Christies - Sleeping Murder is taking things a bit far. Apart from the same names this really was nothing like the book. The plot was so far removed, at one point I even wondered if it would have the same murderer. The end sequence where everyone is called together in a room to reveal the murderer just doesn't happen in Miss Marple mystery's. I think that it is a shame that this new series of "Agatha Christie's MARPLE" ! has decided that the original plots aren't worthy of a decent adaptation. I've even noticed that they have made "The Sittaford mystery" and "By the Pricking of my Thumbs" which were not even Miss Marple mystery's at all. I can't wait to see those as I'm sure they'll bear no similarities to the books at all.
