Candy (2022)

Great performances, but....
14 May 2022
I will start with the (many) positive points: the performances are fantastic, everyone portrays the characters in a very credible way. The settings are beautifully shot and you will get hooked watching this that is a fact.

Now, this is after all, taken from a real story so the outcome is what it is. I start having a problem when the victim is portrayed like a 2 dimensional dim witted, petulant, bitter wench who had it coming throughout the series whereas the murderer is this poster picture perfect super mom/wife who was pulling double duty by catering to her own family and the victims'.

In my humble opinion, a couple of extra episodes focusing on the victim to humanise her instead of solely showing a hormonal mess who was cruel to very child in her life+ the aftermath of the trial would have done this show a whole lot of good.

The husbands also do not get a lot of justice in this show, they all seem to be "socks" simply fitting either foot of the protagonist (portraying the murderer) and end up being 2 dimensional as well.

There are many shows of this nature out there and they all do what they can to keep the viewers interested. This show had the "advantage" of a real crime story that is shocking and yet not very famous therefore there was a lot of artistic room to go around, especially with such a stellar cast and clearly beautiful direction.

It is a shame because by the end of it, it all wraps up into a lazy and limp ending that will leave you googling the case and pray that they make a documentary out of it.

Death Note (I) (2017)

Not bad at all actually
25 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The film takes inspiration from the original material while still providing a different and fun story to watch.

The plot itself is completely different and very interesting (to its own merit) with various touches from the anime/manga here and there.

SPOILERS!!!!!!!

The characters are completely different in the most brilliant way: Light is not the original Light from the manga, and neither is Misa/Mia (they are actually somewhat inverted). If you are a fan of the original you will notice straight away that some characters incorporate several others from the manga. I personally liked that very much as it kept the story interesting and "unpredictable".

Overall, the film is very nice for a Friday night. It is entraining and fresh, while still giving you nice "sprinkles" of nostalgia.

Do not expect a summary of 40 anime episodes into a live-action 1h30 film, this film has the taste of "Death Note" (and its title) but its a completely different creation.

I recommend it!

PS: watch through the initial credits, its worth it!!

mhe! Was expecting more
24 December 2015
I will not leave spoilers and I do encourage people to see it but don't expect much. The film is not original as it mainly copy/pasted the plot from episode 4, added a lot of human characters and minimized the alien population by a fourth or what we were used to.

There are some fun moments of course and I think this will bring star wars in the hearts of a new generation of fans (pre-teens mostly). But for those of us who have seen the originals, first and the prequels later(which by the way, may not be the best, but at least had more originality to them) this film was a bit of a let down (for me at least).

Go watch it, preferably with children, because their reactions will be far more exciting than the movie itself.

Thank you for trying JJ but you better have a giant intergalactic trick up your sleeve for the next two or you will be known as the guy who made Star Trek cool and barely tried on Star Wars.

A pleasant surprise
5 June 2015
I walked in with zero expectations and ended up being very pleasantly surprised. This movie was fun, well crafted and extremely entertaining. Being a big fan of the franchise (and of the genre)I was very happy with how this prequel explored the backstory of the psychic/medium and her future "helpers". The effects were great, the different ghosts/spirits/ entities were all different in their background and aspects. The plot was well developed and the jump-scares were well placed. There is no "repetition" from the previous two movies so this movie gained in originality.

You will not be disappointed.

Very fun ride!

NB: look for two thrilling cameos!!
