Manta, Manta (1991)
in hindsight
21 April 2024
So first of all, what do people expect from a car tuning/racing comedy from the beginning of the 1990s? I hope not, Francis Ford Coppola worthy acting and family dinners that drag on for half an hour. Take it with a grain of salt, for what it is.

As part two , which I never expected, just hit the streaming services (in this case SKY), I felt like watching the original, to prepare. And it paid off well. Being born in 1980, the first film was part of my youth and we watched it a couple of times, having drinks and laughing about it all. What I did not remember, was the deeper sense of it, and Klausi being the not obvious hero.

Honestly it is not an eight star movie, but considering the bad reviews and harsh words that it got by some of my peer critics, I felt like being generous.

An absolute cult classic for anyone from a german speaking background born around the time.

Thanks for the memories really.

Road House (2024)
okay
16 April 2024
Obviously, as a ton of other revierers pointed out, this is not the original nor has it the charme and character building of the classic with patrick swayze. If you can overcome that, it is indeed quite a fun action flick, that has a strong 80s or 90s vibe. The fight sequences are properly coreographed and at times the violence is over the top, tho there is definitley lack of blood for the hard blows that are traded. One thing or person that did not at all fit in, was connor mcgregor. He does put a great act as a boxer or mixedmartialarts fighter, but he sure is not an actor.

Overall it's a fun flick to watch without having to think too much about it all. Could have been much worse.

Strike Back: Retribution: Part 9 (2018)
Season 6, Episode 9
comeback
25 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Seriously, the whole season has been a bit of a challenge for me. Obviously since the reboot/pickup of the series the action has not slowed down, a whole cast of new characters has been introduced, there was still plenty of intrigues, deception and other spy related stuff. At times I felt like the erotic elements were a bit forced, like, not helping the storytelling. But from the moment on that ship, I was thinking, this would be a darn great time for stonebridge and scott showing up and helping out these folks. It took a lot of patience, to the end of the episode, but finally the pros came in for the rescue. Hope this goes on.

Strike Back: Zimbabwe: Part Two (2010)
Season 1, Episode 4
righteous
20 March 2024
This is one of the best episodes of any TV show I have seen yet. The buildup from the previous episode was great and now it culminates into an action packed thriller. This first season of strike back was really outstanding, with good and bad guys somewhat defined, but the lines blurring and a couple of decent surprises. For this episode especially, tears of the sun with bruce willis comes to mind, which was actually a brave feat by the british SAS, turned Hollywood with Navy SEALs n the lot. Even from a military point of view, it's not just some imagination, the rifles, camouflage and overall design really fit. Great ep and really splendid first season. To be followed by four more great ones and then a break and a heavy decline in the last 3.

pure entertainment
18 February 2024
When I first heard of the project I thought to myself: what the heck are they up to? I was sceptical, to say the least. Then after the first viewing I was smiling and thought, oh well done for a half sequel, half remake. Now a good friend of mine was pestering me for months to give it a second viewing and heck he was right. This time around it was way more fun and made much more sense, because I did not hold every single scene against the original Top Gun movie. Again, like in the first part, there are plenty of emotions written into the characters and I do appreciate it a lot. Considering the time we live in, it's a gem of a movie that does neither propagate anything nor discriminate another, it's pure and simple entertainment and hits the spot.

Top Gun (1986)
all time fave
18 February 2024
Writing this review with hindsight, being mid 40s in the mid 2020's, I have to rate it a 10 outta 10. In all fairness it would probably score only an eight or nine, but with what the world has become, what kind of movies are scoring highest ratings nowadays, I just put it up there on the pedestal of a legendary movie. The reviews of latest date, probably written by kids that were not around in the 80s and dishing out their heary critizism, which they all are of course entitled to, might also add a star or two. They just don't know the time, when a movie was to entertain and make the viewer feel good, without pushing some agenda/propaganda, I feel sorry for them to be honest. Casting, soundtrack, filming, romance, action, tragedy and maybe the one or other lesson about morale are all in there. It's a movie an oldtimer like me can watch time and time again, without being annoyed or bored. Some of the scenes are simply iconic cinema, Maverick on the bike, Goose on the piano. Thank you for this film.

The Bear: Fishes (2023)
Season 2, Episode 6
where does the praise come from?
13 February 2024
Well its february 2024 and I am binge watching this show. So far it has been a great ride and totally enjoyable. And now? I sit here, watching this christmas flashback episode, that annoys the hell out of me, wondering how we dropped into this situation. Were they not just like remodeling the restaurant in episode five and trying to overcome all the current issues? And now we are in a family drama with half a dozen characters that nobody knows (or likes for that matter). The mother is an annoying mess, the in laws looking for investment into baseball card boxes are out of the flow and overall I just cannot connect to this hourlong monstrosity. If it were not for fear of missing some "important" plot hint, I would skip the whole episode. Very big gut punch this one and not at all "best of TV in a while, outstanding, wonderful, superb acting", it's crap is what it is folks.... why do this to a show that was easy to binge in one rush, one day for 15 episodes up to this point? Bloody artsy fartsy indulgence is what it is.

Star Trek: Picard (2020–2023)
into the unknown
28 April 2023
The first Seaspm took it's time but really got things going, after a slow opening we got re-introduced to a proper handful of formerly be-loved charaters and had a story that got me quite excited. The 2nd Season seriously bored me to the edge, but I had to continue. It felt like they tried to re-create all the former StarTrek moments that showed, how we as a species evovled. Until the last 20 minutes of the last episode, that is when for me the show came back to life and had me on the couch, begging for more. With Season 3 we are back into full ST mode and it's awesome. If only they would continue the show.

FBI: Most Wanted: Succession (2022)
Season 4, Episode 3
tech does not add up
4 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It took a while for me, to come to like this show. But this episode is just not okay. One cannot make 4 rapid shots with a bolt action sniper rifle, without pulling back the bolt to chamber a new round. Why add such inconsistend and honestly, dumb scenes? Give the shooter a semi-auto rifle or let him fire off less shots. Overall I did not really expect things to keep on level, after a bunch of lead characters left the show (Jess, Ortiz). Kristin is fine as a tough agent with a troubled undercover past, but when I think of Barnes coming back from maternity leave (her "wife" had the baby) shaped like a whale and being sorta out of place, it makes me wonder, why not bury the whole thing with season 3?

The Blacklist: Roanoke (No. 139) (2020)
Season 8, Episode 1
achieves a new low
8 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Oh boy, I am binge watching this show for about 3 weeks by now (yeah, I need to sleep and work once a while too). I loved it up to somewhere around season 5. All the criticism of Liz was not really bothering me, for in one of the first episodes, doing a self-profile she said she was a conflicted and probably narcissist charater. But by now it is unbearable, she changes sides and allegiances just like it does not matter. Actually no matter what, she does stubbornly try to "know the truth she is entitled to".... it really hurts the show. Yes she and Red are the main characters, but she simply starts to be annoying.

And dear producers, if an actor of a background character passes away, be respectful and write a decent fade out for him. But to replace Dom with a guy who does not even resemble him the least, is just a slap in the face of fans who watched some 120 episodes so far. Why are you doing this?

Covert Affairs (2010–2014)
quite a fun show, without too much violence and blood
8 December 2022
Considering it's a show about covert central intelligence agency operations worldwide, but often within the USA, it manages to do without an abundance of heavy violence. Of course there are fistfights, there's the occascional shootout, but at least the main character seems to get thru it without wielding firearms. (am only at the end of season 2 so far). What I am looking forward to, is getting rid of Wilcox senior and much more Jay (junior), most hateable characters in a show in a long time.

Obviously it does not hurt the show, that Piper is a quite attractive woman, without being cheap or skimpy.

As I really enjoyed the show to Nikita, I also enjoy this one here. I cannot really judge it or say, oh darn, recommendation, you have to watch it. Guess you just gotta look into it and see for yourself, it if's worth your while.

Top Boy (2011–2023)
it's like that, innit?
3 December 2022
Being a non native speaker, I gotta watch the show with subtitles, to really not miss on anything said. The set n setting are well done, some projects, low income, crime is abundant. Different characters battle for the crown, to rule the estate, the streets.

I just enjoy about everything this show does, but one thing: they introduce and build characters, make them interesting and that you want to know more about them, then they simply disappear or do not have any matter regarding the storyline. Aside from that, this show is definitley mint. Nine outta ten and hoping for more. Very well executed by directors, producers and actors. Thank you for the entertainment.

this is it
28 August 2022
I have read well over a 130 books, non fiction, biographies. The latest being Baptism by Larry Gwin. Those were soldiers who have been on the ground. And yes, one can criticize the movie, for the landscape not being authentic. So what? The rest of the movie is as close to the horror as possible. These kids (most of the soldiers were 18 to 20) did things, endured combat and performed tasks none of the critics can even really imagine.

Of course there is pathos, but who can judge it. Who but those who were there can have a real say? The battle of the Ia Drang valley of November 65 was a sigificant confrontation that not that many folks know about.

Hats off to you sky soldiers.

brilliant
19 February 2022
I just re-watched this after the disastrous "new take/sequel" that was released the other day via Netfu..up...

Of course it's not a perfect movie, there are after all no boobs in the nude, lolz. Thus it only gets nine outta ten, but honestly that is just me being me. The cinematography, soundtrack, score, set and setting, cast, script, editor and director were simply outstanding on this project. Of course it is not to everyone's taste or liking, but giving a fair look at it, from a very withdrawn point of view, this movie is really great. Without this milestone, there would be no From Dusk Till Dawn or The Devil's Rejects.

just WRONG
18 February 2022
Being a true lover of almost all things Horror, this "new take" or sequel is just WRONG. I am aware that we live in 2022, but that does not mean everything needs to be wokey tokey stupefied.

I will not go into any details, because I am cruel enough to wish you potential review readers suffer through the same wasted amount of time I did. Lolz. And yes I love this movie, because it is soooooo extremely bad, I will even watch it again.

Not a single action in the whole movie makes sense. Aside from that, it's a complete letdown in the body count, kill factor, gore department, scare meter and any other relevant Horror film criterium. It really is just bad.

I had hoped and wished for a revival of this once splendid shocker, but it's a tame attempt to bore you to death.

Deep Blue Sea 3 (2020 Video)
not half as bad as the reviews
10 February 2022
I really liked the original Deep Blue Sea movie, it was a fun shark-ie. The sequel really was bad, like a 3 or 4 out of ten. But then the other day a friend told me there was a "new" one, meaning this here from 2020.

I watched it expecting absolutely nothing and bang, it surprised me.

Of course it cannot escape its genre, but hell for a shark horror it's a good film actually.

The underwater optics were good, the set and setting were good. And there are a few kills and scenes in the film I will not forget too quickly.

Storywise it continues the established lore. We find ourselves on a small coral reef with a village on top of it, drowning slowly due to climate change (its off the coast of Mozambique, but I think I once read about such a place off the coast of Venezuela or Colombia). Peaceful and friendly scientists do their research until some a ship with not so friendly folks aboard show up. From then on it takes it's predestined course and becomes gory.

Definitley worth the time and while.

could have been better
12 November 2021
I really enjoyed this Bond movie, but I wanted to love it. First the theme song was really horrible and does not do justice to introduce Craig's last Bond appearance. Then the wannabe 007 chick, totally mis-cast. And then the progably worst "villain" ever. A whiny pissant with a childlike mind that would not scare anyone for a second, let alone the best secret agent there is. What's the hype about this guy? I don't want to call it acting what he does, about zero facial expressions, unable to speak the english language and eyes that belong to a beat puppy.

not the best in the series but with a first
24 August 2021
As other reviewers have already pointed out, this sure is not the best movie in the series. The cast is actually with the usual suspects and a refreshing Dalilah Lavi. And she is the one who gives us a first in the Karly May movies, she shows some fur and takes a nude bath ;-)

Me and the Others (2021– )
could not bear it
7 August 2021
Well I have to be fair, the outlook and trailer were intriguing and made me really wanna watch this show, especially since I usually watch shows in the english original. Sometimes its just nice to get a show in my native language. Episode 1 was confusing. Episode 2 tried to make sense but I fell asleep during each one. The story is all over the place without some kind of direction or even a hint where it's gonna go. The third episode started with a really dumb sining ensemble and I just could not bear it anymore, it felt like a great waste of time and there was no feeling like "I want to know what comes next". Total failure for my viewing tastes and preferences. Others might like it, I just can't.

not great but watchable
20 July 2021
The Purge was a great movie with fresh ideas, part 2 was still bearable and then it went really downhill. The election year part was just dumb and the first purge really reached a low point. It was stupid and cheap. So I expected quite nothing at all from this one, part 5. Maybe that is the reason why I felt it wasn't really that bad. Sure it's not a great film, but an hour and fourty minutes of entertainment. Still I would recommend only the first part and the two tv-show seasons, unless you got plenty of time to kill.

what jerk chose the camera-lens?
8 July 2021
Overall it's a watchable movie about a bunch of gangsters crossing each other, various set ups, a bit of car tech and 50s style. What I really wonder tho is, what complete idiot chose the fisheye lense? It has zero benefits and makes me wanna puke. So stupid really.

shocking
4 June 2021
I have read a few small articles in newspapers about this giant scandal, but did not really pay much attention to it. Then the last couple of months the name Wirecard got dropped a few times in connection with potential corruption in the Austrian government or people that have connections to it. Last night I found this documentary on SKY, after I had seen a few ads for it on TV and went for it.

Rarely has a docu kept me on the edge of the seat like this one.

How over nearly two decades a few shady characters could "create money" out of nothing. From the early stages of doing payment processing for porn and gambling sites, to the centre of power and might.

I dont want to spoil any content so all I can say is: hats off to the whistleblowers, they are real heros. You have to see this film to believe how twisted the whole thing was/is.

Job very well done, more thrilling than plenty of crime films.

predictable
22 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
As the review title says, this one was very predictable but okay, what do you expect from a zombie flick? About every twist or surprise was foreseeable too, let alone the giant plot hole about the chopper. Not even one pallett of money would fit into that chopper plus the people, let alone any more of it. That dumb mask of the boss zombie is nothelping anyone too. Hit him in the eyes, shoulder, chin or wherever. So why still give it a six out of ten? Because it was entertaining, did not take itself serious and had some fun aciton in it. Tho I get annoyed by Netflix and their total ignorance how guns and rifles work. Alas, could have been worse.

The Two Popes (2019)
brilliant and warm hearted film
5 May 2021
I did not really know what to expect of this film. Then I had the problem to find subtitles for the various languages spoken, so I could really go for it. But then I was pleasantly surprised. A very warm hearted film approaching the topic. BRAVO, this was fun even for me as a catholic. Far away from the woke propaganda that "the new pope" was. Beautiful film, great acting, humor and wit with a pace that was great. Thank you makers of this film.

The New Pope (2020)
stupid and disgusting
5 May 2021
The fist ten minutes of episode one nearly did it for me. Stupid and loose flashes of epilepsy warning worthy neon shi.. no proper introduction to the story, no proper flow or timeline. While i found the two popes a marvelous film this here is quite disgusting woke gay propaganda. It is insulting too, just consider for a second one would make a series or movie like this about islam, heads would roll and bombs go off. I find it really poor how "art" is allowed to butcher the belief and hope of over a billion people.
