Although I'm disappointed that Netflix paid a criminal for her story, I put that aside for this review. First some housekeeping.
1) This is inspired by the real life scam artist Anna Sorokin. Some things in the 9 part series is made up.
2) Yes, Julia Garner has an accent in this series that annoys people, including myself. Do what I did, listen to the real Anna in an interview. Julia did her justice. :-)
3) Anna Chlumsky - people complained about her facial expressions. All I can say is these people need to look in a mirror and see what their face looks like when presented with the same scenarios as Anna's character, Vivian Kent. Anna's facial expression didn't bother me, and the people who complained should avoid watching Little Fires Everywhere - Kerry Washington's facial expressions will make them remove those comments from their review!
Now...my review. Some people say the story could have been condensed in 3 or less episodes. I disagree. The focus of each episode is very deliberate. I found the characters intriguing and caused myself to question, what is it about the duped characters that made them so gullible to Anna's conning ways? People say Anna was charming and fun and that's why people were drawn in. I don't think that's the case. I think there is something wrong with the people who were drawn in, something missing, that Anna picked up on and preyed on. If you read the interview with her dad, you'll see that the parents gave in to Anna's demands. Children like Anna need to be dealt with at an early age, not appeased or placated. Anna got her way because she preyed on her parents' weaknesses.
Did Anna establish genuine friendship? According to this movie, just one person stood by her. I think the series was an interesting take on what could have transpired and clues that were missed. The pace of the movie didn't bother me. The actors were good. I do have to say, I am not necessarily a fan of Shonda, nor do I dislike her for any reason, but it bothers me in general to see recycled actors from her other works on TV.
If you're looking to be entertained and you can tolerate the accent, which was done on purpose, I think you'll be fascinated with this spin.
Other folks commented and rated this show low because of the mere mention of Trump. Real reviews should be impartial. Did the Trump comments fit in with the storyline? Seems like it played in a little, especially at a news agency and during that time period. To me, if you're a Trump supporter and are offended by the mere mention regardless of context, then your review is not credible. That would be like a vegan food reviewer critic giving a steakhouse a low rating.
