Damsel (2024)
Predictably Satisfied
The trailer shows majority of what the film is about, and the rest of the film is otherwise pretty predictable, but it still held my attention throughout the entirety of it.
It's nothing spectacularly new, but yet it's not an over-played storyline either, so it did captured my interest, and I was not disappointed with the ending. Millie is growing as an actress, and though there are times you can feel a slight disconnect with her character throughout the film, she still manages to give it just enough to keep the audience on her side. The only balance I was distracted by was the walk between this being a youth fantasy film vs young adult/teen fantasy film. At times it seems like the targeted audience was a much younger crowd, but then they would push the boundaries a little, making it difficult to decide where this film should actually fall.
Ginny & Georgia: A Very Merry Ginny & Georgia Christmas Special (2023)
A Painful Release
This episode keeps in-sync with the overall shallow day to day drama, comedy, and romantic storylines this show is known for; however, the ending breaks down the walls of the two main characters and allows all of us to feel with them. This episode creates the depth the show was lacking the first season, and gives us a new chapter into raw and real emotions. Moving forward, this critical scene between Ginny and Georgia heals the broken connection that was felt throughout the first half of the season, and allows us as an audience to appreciate the rest of the season as we watch the unbreakable bond between mother and daughter. The final minutes gives the characters and the audience an overwhelming rush of pain, but an emotional release all in one, creating a beautiful ending to a struggling chapter.
Devil in Ohio: The Dawning (2022)
Unsettling
There was an eerie feeling laced throughout this series, and a constant curiosity that kept me intrigued until the very end. The very end, however, left me with a very unsettling feeling of not having any closure. The last 5-10 minutes should not even exist. The entire storyline, character connections, parallels and much more were all resolved, but then the episode kept going. The last 5 minutes created a whole new series of questions and confusion. Mae's character had some flaws and inconsistencies throughout the series, but the last episode made her character crumble, and I was left feeling almost no sympathy towards her in the end, leaving me highly unsatisfied. The reason for the 7/10 was for the consistency with the theme, feelings, and parallel drawn between Mae and Suzanne's character. The music was also a great asset to this series.
Stranger Things: Chapter Nine: The Piggyback (2022)
Still Running up that Hill
This will be one of the few reviews that states this finale was emotionally satisfying from all ends. The characters, from the ones that made it to the end and the ones that sadly did not, all met the fates they were destined to meet.
I'll start with the most controversial character's ending, Max's. This whole season we as an audience knew she was Vecna's end game. She was his prey throughout the season, and her constant Kate Bush muffled in the background did not let us forget he was always in her shadow. She died, yes, and the fourth gate opened. However, Vecna was interupted and did not fully complete all the motions like he did all his other victims, and Vecna is still lurking at the end of the episode, giving Max just a tiny sliver of hope. Vecna's mission felt incomplete, therefore, Max was not fully lost and gave enough for Eleven to pull whatever was left of her back. To me, this was not the writers being afraid of killing off a main character, it was them leaving pieces to an extraordinary puzzle waiting to be hashed out in the final season, or rather, the final battle.
Eddie. A character Hawkins would never understand. It was not his time, and he knew it. He gave his life for the town, and he was still far from a martyr in their eyes. No one but the select few would know or even comprehend what he did, as almost the entire town was blind to the reality that cursed their town to begin with. His death was no where near justifiable, but that's exactly what I believe the writers wanted. He was either to live the rest of his life in hiding, or he had the chance to do something totally epic and die a hero in his friends' eyes.
I could continue but those were the main points I wanted to add to the mix of reviews here. Overall, this was a emotionally challenging but satisfying ending. The episode built up just enough to leave us wanting a truly epic final season. I truly hope the last battle between Eleven, her friends, and Vecna will be one of the greatest series finales in TV history.
Bridgerton: The Viscount Who Loved Me (2022)
A Satisfying Ending for the Dear Readers
This season did not give us the full love-story development such as last season, but it still gave us just enough, and wanting more. The flashbacks of Anthony earlier in the season really helped build on his character, and gave the audience a better look inside his head. I really wished they would have gave Kate a flashback just to give some visual to her story. The storytelling for her lacked, and even a few small clips showing how she got where she was at the time of the present season would have made this season complete. Penelope's character seemed to change a little this season as well, and something felt off with her from mid-sean on. Overall though, I was thoroughly entertained, and look forward to the future scandals lurking in the Ton.
Bridgerton: A Bee in Your Bonnet (2022)
Stinging Shadows
This episode introduces another level to Anthony's character. This season thus far felt a little too dry, and I was worried we were only going to get a handful of episodes with some witty bickering between Kate and Anthony before some dramatic romance began. A small little creature then comes along and gives us some real depth, and a somber story for the Vicount. This episode gave Anthony something his sister 's love story lacked, character depth. I love a good love story, but add some character development alongside of it and I'm sold. I look forward to seeing if Kate's story plays out in similar fashion as the season continues.
Survivor: Feels Like a Rollercoaster (2022)
A Good Balance
Unlike last season where it took 4-5 episodes to even learn some of the cast members' names, this season already shined light on some lovable players. All the new twists and advantages are still not fully incorporated into the show smoothly, but the focus was not so heavy on learning about every advantage since we are familiar with them from last season. This season started off giving me some hope that we will see some good game-play, character growth, and alliances form throughout the season without all the pressure from the outside world.
Survivor: One Thing Left to Do... Win (2021)
A Breath of Hope...
With all the build-up on who was going to make it to the final 3, there was some potential to make the final vote a little interesting. I would have loved to have seen Ricard and Xander battle it out in the final 3, and I think that would have scored Xander more points with the jury to do a bold move and use his idol on Ricard. Instead, taking Erika, who only made it to the final 3 because random advantages were literally handed right to her. Even after the questions and comments from the jury, I am very confuse as to what her game play really was, other than just tagging along, and attempting to stamp her name on every move/play that was not her own. This season atleast gave us some memorable players I hope to see return in the future, but the crazy twists and turns can definitely stay behind.
Survivor: There's Gonna Be Blood (2021)
A little spark...
Honestly this was the first episode this season that made me feel a little excited during the tribal. This is one of the first seasons where I'm this far in and can't even tell you the names of all the players. Some players are also getting an abundance of camera time for non-sense banter (Shan). The twists this season are finally racking up at least to see the players start to use them, making this episode a little better than the rest. I hope to see some actual relationships in the upcoming episodes though, and not this constant flipping as it really takes from one of the main themes of survivor to see the players create alliances and follow through.
Malcolm & Marie (2021)
Exhausting Repetition
The relationship of the two sole characters of this film is revealed all in the matter of one long-winded, repetitive argument. The black and white picture sets the mood perfectly as the viewers are able to enter the bleak, exhausted relationship of Malcolm and Marie. There are several ups and downs as we follow the couple through the night, but it is easy to realize this one night mirrors their relationship as an entirety. If you're interested in a good story, listen. This film is unique as the actors do not show you their trials and tribulations, rather, they speak them. Be patient while watching this, and do not expect a conclusive ending. With a toxic and chaotic relationship such as these characters', it would not be true to put a 'period' at the end of the film, as their story is a never-ending, exhausting repetition.
The Prom (2020)
A Flashy Feel-Good
I think with any musical movie adaptation, it is safe to count on losing some of the authenticity of the voices. With that being said, yes, some of the songs sounded off or overly autotuned, but they still had their effect in the end. If you're an automatic anti-James Corden fan, then this is not the movie for you. If you have an open mind though, I did not find his performance horrible in the least bit. Can he be over dramatic in all the wrong ways, yes. For this role though, I think it fit better than I expected and I appreciated what he did with the character. The others in the Broadway cast aways group were also fun and at times lovable characters as well. One common thing I saw in the reviews was that you could atleast relate to one of the characters throughout the movie. With the different array of personalities, acting methods, and voices, I would strongly agree to that. I think Emma's character got lost in certain sections and the storyline got carried away, but in the end, the story found it's way back.
Hollywood (2020)
It takes a few episodes before you get it
The first episode had me hooked, thinking this was just an overly fantasized, flashy and a little bit corny take on the movie industry in the 1940s. However, the second episode started introducing a multitude of complexities, and then I was lost into this world of hate, secrets, and injustice. Yes, there are a lot of things happening in this series that would seem unrealistic, but that was the truth of this time as you were not allowed to see all this expression and owning oneself. I was very pleased with the overall message that came through at the end. The last episode pulled at every heart string, and yet I still felt sad, despite the semi-happy ending. A great series full of twists and hope.
Togo (2019)
A Leading Dog
This was an interesting piece of history to watch. At first I thought this movie may blend right in with all the other sleds dog films, but the personality of Togo really brought a new life to this storyline. Though the story itself seemed a bit flat, and the characters were very shallow, Togo's focus kept my interest throughout the movie. I really thought the flashbacks were a nice touch throughout the film as it broke up the journey to tell the whole story inbetween. Despite what I said about the characters falling a little flat, I'm glad the main focus was on shaping Togo's character and personality, as he was the hero of the story.
Joker (2019)
Great build up for explosive ending
This movie is not about 'how much action can we cram into one sitting', rather, it is about the slow build up of a truly twisted character. Arthur's character is the sole focal point during the entire film, allowing the audience to live through his backstory with no interruptions. The music, dancing, and crude laughter draws you into the world of Arthur, and eventually, the Joker. With that being said, the transformation into the Joker is a very intense and occasionally bloody journey; but, every step of this process has meaning behind it and nothing seemed overly done, or out of place. Some scenes are very dark, but the backstory leading up to them makes them even more impactful when witnessing them on the screen.
I wouldn't know what the correct category for this movie is, but it hits hard in the psychological department as you watch this character's mind explode out of its shell by the end.
Dumbo (2019)
An Escape to the Circus
Overall, this was a feel good type of movie. Yes, there were many characters and storylines that did not get fully developed, however, the main focus was on Dumbo himself. The cute, little animated elephant Burton created really drew me and captured my heart. All the scenery, colors, costumes and camera angles kept me in the circus vibe all throughout the film. The only real downside to this film was the lack of emotional connection I created with the characters. Dumbo and his Mama showed more love to each other than the father and his kids. If the actors would have put in the same amount of effort as the animators, then this film would easily achieve 10 stars.
How to Get Away with Murder: Wes (2017)
An Emotional Ending
I'll admit, I did not believe this season would match seasons 1 or 2, but I was incredibly wrong. By this point in the show, you finally feel comfortable with all the characters, their history, and their relationships, thus, the show takes great advantage of this.
Viola Davis has continuously impressed me throughout the show as every episode she grows stronger as an actress, and she really connects with her character. This episode marks a new high for her as she dove into Annalise's vulnerable side and we finally see her break. Yes, we have seen her cry, drink, take on cases as distractions and eat her heart out during several episodes, however, this one is different as she faces this tragedy head on, and does not deflect it away like she normally does. The final moments of the episode show her finally letting it all release, and you can feel all the pain she was building up through the season.
I thought Wes's ending was handled very fairly, as they gave him more than just one episode for his character's closure. The mystery behind the fire was interesting as well since you could never fully guess who was behind it until this episode. Though it was a surprise to see Laurel's father orchestrating Wes's death, it was almost too much of a surprise. There was almost no connections made throughout the season with him to at least give the audience a chance of understanding why he did it, but perhaps that is what season 4 will cover.
Laurel, Michaela, Asher, Conner, and Oliver have a comforting relationship with each other as they really unite and become a family this season. They still bicker and fight, but by the final episode they are all protecting and looking out for each other
The Greatest Showman (2017)
A Beautiful Creation
Though I listened to the soundtrack before seeing the movie, the songs still stirred my emotions while watching them unfold on the screen. From the opening scene, to the ending, my attention was fully captured as the movie showed a beautiful journey of acceptance, courage, and love. The songs do not fall under the typical Broadway stereotype, so please do not stray away from this movie because it contains singing. The songs varied from making me want to sing and dance along, to making my heart swell and my eyes water.
Every person on the cast deserved to be in this movie and did their characters justice. The chemistry between Zendaya and Zac was incredible, as well as the passion Hugh and Meals had in their voices.
If you have the chance to see this beautiful creation, or even listen to the soundtrack, please take it.
