Poker Nights (2007)
7/10
silly fun
1 February 2008
Caught this one at a festival and was very surprised. Couple swapping is something you hear about but you don't really hear what really happens. In this film, frustrated and bored couples swap partners via a poker game. Of course you know that this is not going to end well and of course it doesn't. The women watch as the guys talk and do their thing and then things start to get really interesting. The actors were all quite good and believable. I only wish that the film explored who they were before the film started so we knew a bit more about them and what makes them tick. I don't play poker so some of the poker stuff was a bit out of my league, but it didn't detract from a decent short film.

String Theory (I) (2007)
9/10
Art imitates life
1 February 2008
This film was playing in a festival in New York with a bunch of other comedy films that had the theme of relationships. Because it was called String Theory I thought the festival had mistakenly programmed some science film, but once the film starts you immediately realize the joke. The film follows two people on their first date. They were put together by an internet dating service so this is their first face-to-face meeting. I have done a couple of these kinds of dates and so have many of my friends, and this film completely caught the awkwardness and excitement of what is today's version of the blind date. The film uses comedy, misunderstandings and rapid dialogue to really build the two characters and their potential attraction (or lack of!). I won't ruin the ending, but suffice to say the audience was laughing at these two people and the ending led to even more hilarity. Hopefully I can see it again and look for the "clues" throughout the film.

27 Dresses (2008)
6/10
typical romantic comedy
1 February 2008
I watch Grey's Anatomy every week so I guess I'm a bit of a Katherine Hiegel fan. I liked her in Knocked Up and she's decent in this film. In fact the whole cast is quite good. I just felt like I had seen this film before somewhere (or parts of it in different films). I guess I watched it because I'm getting married soon so I wanted to see the dresses in the film (and there are some amazing ones and some interesting ones for those who care about dresses). The audience didn't seem to laugh as much as I thought they would. This is not the same kind of film as Knocked Up and maybe people were expecting that. Otherwise, its a decent Tuesday-night date movie.
