Tough As Nails (2020)
Not a great competition show
I am big fan of Phil Keoghan and his Amazing Race show. So, when I read that he has a new show called Tough-as-Nails.... I had great expectations from this one.
I have watched entire first season and was disappointed. The show is ok if you don't have anything else to watch...but otherwise wouldn't recommend it. The work aspect has been made into a game show and various competitors participate for a 200k prize money along with several other team prizes.
The is supposed to be a reality show but seems to be extremely scripted. While the show is supposed to be about people who are tough-as-nails.... they seem to be overly emotional and talk a lot about their feelings.
Don't think I will watch the second season.
Clarice (2021)
Disappointing sequel
There have been many sequels to Silence of the lambs.... but none of them focused on Clarice until now.
So obviously first thing you look for is comparison to the legendary character played by Jodie Foster. This new Clarice pales in comparison. Original Clarice was very analytical/ smart beyond her young age, whereas this new Clarice seems like a clueless emotional wreck.
The tension between Clarice and her boss seems to be way overdone and seems too unrealistic. This show suffers from very poor writing.
This is a sequel that nobody needs to watch.
Irresistible (2020)
Boring Political Satire
I expected the movie to be a comedy (based on the trailer) , but it was more of a drama.
Movie is about money in our election process. How money controls everything in the election process both on the left and the right.
Coming from Jon Stewart, I expected more laughs but it was kinda boring and lame. Considering the pedigree of the cast/director it was really an opportunity wasted. Steve Carrell was not at his best.
The ending was patronizing and condescending. Did not like the ending.
While the message of the movie is about our messed up political system, it could have been handled a lot better.
5/10 mainly for the star power in the movie.
The White Tiger (2021)
Finally a good movie from Netflix
This is a well made movie.
Highlight of the movie is excellent acting by Adarsh Gourav and direction by Ramin Bahrani.
Movie is about the protagonist (Adarsh Gourav) who is from a poor lower caste family in rural India and how he manages to fight his way up the success ladder against some very tough odds.
Movie is quite serious and dark most of the time with an undertone of humor because of the way the story is narrated by the lead actor.
There are no good guys in the movie just shades of grey where people do whatever is necessary to get ahead in life. Movie includes lot of social commentary about Indian society.
Overall the movie keeps you engaged till the end. However the ending may not be for everyone.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Painfully Slow Movie .....such a waste of talented actors
Theme of the movie has promise but it never goes anywhere. Has good set of actors but their talent is wasted.
Technically it is a very good movie...Cinematography / Special effects etc are very good.
The movie leaves too many questions unanswered....makes you wonder if this is intentional or just bad narration?
Rig 45 (2018)
Terrible copy of Agatha Christie mystery
Writing this review after watching Season-1.
I do love Norwegian/Scandinavian crime shows... but there is nothing Norwegian about this.
This is a very bad imitation of Agatha Christie mystery Ten Little Indians (And Then There Were None).
Story is supposed to be happening on an offshore oil rig cut off from mainland during a hurricane. There is a killer on board who is killing off people. Writing , acting and direction is all terrible. Please don't waste your time watching this show.
Avenue 5 (2020)
Is this supposed to be a comedy?
I started watching the series as it had some of my favorite actors (like Hugh Laurie) in it.
The premise of the show had good potential but I think the opportunity has been squandered with poor writing and extremely poor character development.
The show was noisy/ loud/ nonsensical and not at all funny. I really love the SciFi genre and loved shows like Orville. But there is nothing likable about the show. I did not get any the jokes. Wasted opportunity.
Bloodshot (2020)
Reboot of Super soldier movie genre
The reason I watched this movie because it has Vin Diesel in it. It is full of action sequences. The film does not disappoint you if you are watching it for good action. Don't expect anything else in terms of quality film making.
Vin Diesel is an invincible super soldier in the movie. It immediately reminded me of some of the older movies from eighties and nineties like Universal Soldier.
I understand this movie is based on a comic book series. If they are trying to build a movie franchise out of this, then I would say it is a weak start.
The Undoing (2020)
Interesting thriller with excellent acting by Hugh Grant
This is a fairly good thriller/murder mystery. It keeps you interested till the very end (except for the last 10 minutes).
Thought Hugh Grant did very well in the lead male role with good supporting acting by Noah Jupe. New actress Matilda De Angelis did a fine job.
The only negative to the whole show is Nicole Kidman's acting. Definitely below par for her. Because of excessive cosmetic surgeries to her face it is tough to make out any facial expressions... and in some cases downright distracting to watch her.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Completely different Star Wars movie
The final episode of Star Wars saga was quite disappointing to the Star Wars followers.
Star Wars movies were always about use of the force either in a positive or negative way. This film completely breaks tradition and leaps into magical/ fantasy realm.
There weren't really any characters worth rooting for. I almost rooted for Emperor.
In the ending I was not sure why Rey would inherit the Skywalker name/title.
I think movie cared more about commercial aspects rather than keeping fans happy.
Between Earth and Sky (2018)
Painfully slow movie with Awful Ending
This is about parents of a teenage girl trying to cover up the misdeeds of their child. The whole movie is painfully slow. Parents keep making really stupid decisions one after another with disastrous results.
The Boys (2019)
Season-1 was really good. Season-2 is going downhill really quick
Really liked the Season-1.
Season-1 was a fresh take on Super heroes. It was fresh/ irreverent/ funny/ violent/ sexy. There seemed to be a purpose to the story which was engaging. I was looking forward to watching Season-2.
But Season-2 turned out to be a very big disappointment. I have never seen a show degenerate so fast in its second season.
Whatever components made Season-1 so good, the writers of Season-2 made sure they don't exist anymore. The writing seems to be all over the place. It NOT funny and irreverent anymore. There is a huge element of political correctness injected into the show.
Very disappointing. I am going to stop watching this.
Znaki (2018)
Incoherent mess
Watched the entire first season on Netflix before writing this review.
Only positive about this show is the beautiful location where it was filmed.
The theme of the show has promise but handling and narration is extremely bad. Dialogues don't make much sense ( this might be result of poor dubbing/ translation from Polish). Pretty much all characters are annoying. Most annoying character is that of Trela who seems to be in a bad mood pretty much all the time for no reason whatsoever.
Season ending left me quite irritated.
FBI (2018)
Police procedural with lots of PC preaching
It is a decent police procedural with half-decent acting by the lead actors. Missy Peregrym and Zeeko Zaki do an OK job as the FBI agents.
One thing I would like them to tone down is the PC preachiness in every episode. And Jeremy Sisto should stop yelling all the time(it is very annoying)
Another Life (2019)
Sci-Fi Garbage
This show is so poorly written that it is almost unimaginable that Netflix made this into a show.
Feels like show is full of hormonal teenagers and not bunch of people who get picked to go into space to save the humanity. The characters are so full of melodrama. Half the time the characters are imagining things and that makes you feel more annoyed 😠
