Inland Empire (2006)
8/10
Macabre absurdity from the Master of Darkness
20 October 2008
If you're reading comments on this title you must be interested in films of a dark, surreal and atmospheric nature. If this is so, then Inland Empire is a film for you. The film is enjoyable as long as you can get over the absurdity and quit trying to formulate a rational story.

There are many disturbing moments which are chilling in a way in which only other David Lynch films are. Inland Empire is more absurd than any of his previous releases which would deter many, but David Lynch still has a large, loyal fan-base built on the same style of film-making which characterizes Inland Empire.

So, basically it's a long, disjointed, macabre, and brilliant film, about a Woman losing track between reality and the screenplay of her current film, a cursed film.

High Tension (2003)
8/10
Feed your dark side
8 October 2007
This is an example of a brilliant and original horror story put on film in a sleek and realistic fashion. Rarely, have there been horror films which are both stylish AND shockingly realistic. High Tension is the best horror film in the recent past for this reason.

I think it is pointless to talk about the story for obvious reasons. What I like to read in others comments is how and how well a film conveys certain themes. High Tension is about sexual repression. The title could be in relation to the suspense of the film or the tension between the two main characters caused by one's coveting. A large amount of serial killers in the past are triggered by sexual repression. Repressed emotions are then released through a homicide. This film is an insight into such deranged minds.

Different, carefully chosen settings create a dark, "Lost Highway" like atmosphere. The great story is driven by the settings along with good music, camera-work and gloomy (dusk/night/dawn) lighting.

What made "The Sixth Sense" and "Seven" such great movies...? The ending. Here is no exception. If you didn't work it out before the end it will both surprise and baffle you.

Versus (II) (2000)
8/10
Brilliant Trash - Japan style
1 February 2007
This movie is pure entertainment. Like some of the previous comments, there is no intelligent plot line here - but who cares! Its sad when an attempt at an "intelligent/mature" film turns out daft. In this case the objective is to, intentionally create a "daft", (or, more properly) pointless comedy/horror/action picture. The result is strikingly entertaining.

There are a few western references which are also quite funny. The references to Mike Tyson's reflexes and Yellowstone National Park don't fit, but add to the charm and humor of the film, even if, possibly unintended.

I think it's Kenji Matsuda who deserves some acclamation for portraying the most hilarious of characters, who gets increasingly funny as the film progresses as well as the 2 police officers hunting down the prisoners.

There is plenty of violence and humor to satisfy any horror film fan's appetite. I find the best horror films make you laugh as well as squirm which is why Versus is a diamond in the rough.

Confrontational and Original Horror Movie
22 January 2007
I am always searching for something original when in the video store. Often something genuinely original is hard to find these days. In the recent decline of originality in the movie industry, "The Last Horror Movie" stands out like a beacon for its genre.

It possesses the most brilliant ending since "Fight Club". It will have you locking your doors and windows! The premise of the film is to portray murder through the eyes of a character with no moral conscience, i.e. a psychopath. Unlike the many "psycho" movies made in the past, the killer is the narrator and maker of the film which is in a documentary/snuff movie format.

I recommend this film for anyone who enjoys an unpredictable, intelligent and suitably violent horror film.

Film of jealousy and hate
17 November 2006
This, unlike your typical "slasher" is truly disturbing. I found this so, not because of violence but for the representation of hatred towards the fellow man.

This hatred is directed to westerners, specifically American's. It leaves you asking do foreign cultures really think this way? How many people dream about torturing people from wealthier, "happier" cultures like that of the U.S.A, U.K, Australia, Japan etc.?

The setting is perfect: Slokakia, known to many as a gloomy, poor nation in Eastern Europe. The victims are perfect: "Happy-go-lucky", promiscuous teenagers on vacation. The perfect juxtaposition exists between villains and victims. The poor, angry and jealous Eastern Europeans against these, more prosperous American's. It's one cultures revenge against another, through jealousy.

In the end who are the real victims, who are the real villains?

An ideal infusion of strong imagery, violence, suffering and revenge make this an entertaining film for most horror movie fans.

In the end this is an above average modern portrayal of the dark side of the human psyche and humanity in general.

Eraserhead (1977)
3/10
No masterpiece
9 December 2005
David Lynch films keep getting better and better. This early effort is difficult to follow like many of his other films (Lost Highway), is darker (Blue Velvet) and is patchy. Recently, I saw Mulholland Drive which is an awesome improvement on any other film he has made and one of the best this century to date. Eraserhead is more of a collage of disturbing images and sequences than most normal films with a free flowing plot and theme.

I don't think Lynch had a premise with this film and wanted the audience to develop their own story from these images and and sequences. I didn't bother to conceive of what this film could mean. I didn't enjoy it enough it really was a waste of time viewing it, although some parts are memorable. I will never forget Henry and Marie's disfigured child or the dinner which moved and oozed blood. Why? Because it was both funny and shocking in its own way which is rare.

I believe it is about lower class people losing their moral values, hope, faith and even sanity in a decaying society. The industrial setting, for me gave the film a British feel, I imagined it to be Manchester in the 1930s - 1950s.

Overall the solution to this jig saw puzzle is don't take your anything you value in life for granted because life can be much worse. This is in hindsight, the film possessed no emotional stimulation and did not provoke any thoughts.

Chopper (2000)
8/10
Aussie classic
20 September 2005
Worldwide acclaim for an Australian film is uncommon in recent years. "Chopper" is a deserving of all praise received. Brilliant performances and screen-play stand out in this true story. Chopper would not be an easy character to play but Eric Bana succeeds and presents a realistic portrayal of Chopper with toughness, insanity, brutality and vulgarity in perfect balance.

A resultantly flawless film would have been achieved if not for a few flaws. Some characters are not constructed well and quality acting is missing in some performances probably as a result of casting limitations.

"Chopper" is a love-hate film which would not suit all audiences due to the freakish violence and storyline based on thuggery, drug abuse and evangelism.

The American equivalent to Trainspotting
8 August 2005
This film is flawless. A simple idea executed perfectly. Without subtlety, this is a truly intoxicating experience. The characters experience a transition from mundane, but happy lives to living nightmares, where death seems to be a better option. Drug addiction is a common theme in films but this film is limitless in the scope of the issue. From young people needing cash to the lonely and elderly. Their lives change in a way I could never imagine.

Inovation is also prominent, with split screens used in tight rations, camera-work to increase the intensity of a certain scene, whether violent or serene. Music is important and the musical score here is catchy and emotive, perfectly suited for this film. The acting is also amazing. This film, unlike others of its time does not rely on visual effects, but the skill of the cast and crew which makes this film a work of pure genius.

Deceptively dark
5 August 2005
Some may find my summary quite funny but this film had a major effect on me as a child. I believe this to be the finest film of its kind, easily better than any Disney animation. This is the Lord of The Rings for the younger audience. This may be the saddest film I have seen, particularly when I was 4 or 5 years old. There is aspects which represent many of the depressing issues in society: betrayal, demoralization and the death of loved ones.

Many children would find this a bit heavy. Seeing it again after 15 years reminded me of its bleakness. I reflection of the society we live in.

The protagonist, Jen (voiced by Henson) and his only accompaniment in its whole world, Kira are cute and all other characters are sinister portrayals of evil.

A melancholic masterpiece with morals to be learned for all. People of all ages will be mesmerized by this film for many more generations. Truly timeless and majestic. 10/10

Open Water (2003)
8/10
Re-creation of a tragedy.
5 August 2005
Films which ride on talent, both acting and technical are by far the best. I am getting bored of the "Blockbuster" films like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and The Matrix. The audience can see right through them yet get dazzled by the computer generated scenes.

Open Water is an example of a brilliant film with only the essential animation, relying on old fashioned film constituents. The acting is believable and the cinematography is transcendent of most other recent films. There is not a great reliance on computer animation in this film, despite this they are very realistic. Tension and anxiety are brilliantly created through suspense and the continual threats posed by the ocean. Well until the end the audience is given a glimmer of hope for the main characters. Their fate is always uncertain.

I was disappointed that the film wasn't set in Australia, the location of the event from which this film is based. For those who are aware of this event which took place over the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the outcome should be obvious but isn't. This is due to Chris Kentis and Laura Lau's brilliant version of the tragedy. They have created a thrilling and startling film which will be on scuba-divers minds for years to come! The Jaws of the new century.

Armageddon (1998)

Tragic
3 August 2005
I have seen bad films in the last few years and I have seen Armageddon. I thought it won't be hard to better Deep Impact, a near identical film made a few months earlier but this failed in all ways I know.

This film does not innovate or cover new territory. Like so many films before it a disaster is imminent and "heroes" have to risk all in their lives to save the world. Tacky. The film-makers premise is to entertain but most people lost interest soon after the lame computer graphic introduction, Including a destructed Chrysler Building which, now appears like a September 11 terrorist attack.

One of the most hopeless and pointless films of the 1990s.

Not bad for A Cnut
3 August 2005
This show got me more interested in British comedy. To my delight it is far funnier than the American trash I have grown up with (excluding Frasier). Since this I have seen The Office, Absolutely Fabulous, Black Books and Keeping up Appearances. They are all great but have not matched the Tall yardstick of Believe Nothing.

The characters are very likable in their dysfunctional interaction with each other. I really enjoy Adonis's dominance and arrogance and Albumens willingness to serve his "Master". Of course Dr. Awkward is everything her name lives up to as is Adonis Cnut, the quadruple professor.

I am optimistic that the show will make a comeback. I will get bored of watching the same 6 episodes repeatedly in about 10 years.

Collateral (2004)
10/10
Pure class
3 August 2005
I don't buy many DVD's and I don't give 10/10 ratings often either but I did both for this film because it is the best film this century so far. Films like Lord of the Rings and The Matrix where guaranteed to be huge hits but Collateral is a minimalist film which rides on acting, direction and technical brilliance, some of which are absent in the "Blockbuster" films.

The cast and crew are pure class and they collaborated perfectly to make a dynamic and electrifying film like none before it. Although it begins as a classy and well organized thriller it quickly transforms into a hectic, relentless action film. Themes and symbols are abundant throughout but none more obvious than the Good (Foxx) versus Evil (Cruise). Jamie Foxx, who is nervous and unsure of himself symbolizes good, moral citizens of urban society and Tom Cruise is cool, calculated and symbolic of immorality, as well as the underworld and murderous occupations.

A classic. Tom Cruises best performance ever.

I Stand Alone (1998)
6/10
Nasty
3 August 2005
This film is a nasty and sadistic portrayal of the dark side of the human psyche. When a film is not enjoyable and entertaining it should derive some positive and meaningful themes. Not here! Nothing positive can be construed from this film unless you are a psychopath who enjoys sexual violence, murdering your own unborn offspring, prostitution, incest, sadism, pedophilia and suicide. I Stand Alone, like Gaspar Noe's' latter film Irreversible has a very depressing, sadistic atmosphere which is more arresting and melodramatic than anything to come out of Hollywood.

It seems that the film is not at all worth viewing if it is not positively meaningful or entertaining. But it symbolizes the dark, sadistic side of a struggling male demographic of an era in history. You will not feel happy after seeing this film.

Nightmare
3 August 2005
Nightmare- the only way to summarize this film. To some people this is a well made and innovative film. I am not one of these people. I, although must give this film credit for truly disturbing me, which is quite an achievement, considering that The Exorcist had little effect on me when I was 13. But this film is completely different because it is so realistic.

In reality this film is a true story and the events occur frequently in modern society. So it is fictional characters acting out a film which could be based on thousands of real events.

I'm surprised I watched the whole film. It is in reverse-chronological order and the first 10 minutes or so is a swirling camera with disturbing sounds which ends up at a nightclub called "The Rectum" a nauseating start which I hope to forget soon. But some scenes are far more toxic than the introduction.

Try to avoid. Especially females. But much can be learn't from watching this film, but learn't from seeing the shocking consequences of poor decisions made by the characters. Hence the title.

Bah!!! Bellow par
2 August 2005
I was disappointed when I saw this film. I usually enjoy apocalyptic and natural disaster films (Armageddon excepted) but this was poor. I remember better artificial film graphics from the early 90s. Everything in this film seemed artificial, the characters, the storyline, the events and the authenticity of the film-makers premise. There was no moral proposition to the serious issue of Global warming. I hated that millions died and the world was in total chaos and the whole film was centered around a bunch of imbeciles!

I would not recommend this film. A big budget film on a huge issue which effects everyone in the world should not have been like this.

The Crow (1994)
8/10
The Gothic matrix
2 August 2005
What a classic! Dark and disturbing but with an undercurrent of hope throughout. Essentially the film is about revenge of a murdered man who isn't ready for death so returns from death in an immortal form. A crow is his link between life and afterlife.

The Crow is a cold film but occasionally the young girl brings some warmth to the screen in particular when She becomes friends with a police officer and when her Mother cleans up and starts caring.

The villains are pure evil. Of course they all die and there is a happy ending for the girl and her mother. How sweet.

8/10 for this which is 2 points more than my Matrix rating. This is due to the Matrix being dehumanized and the Crow shows human emotion and certain characters personify these emotions particularly anger and sorrow. A better soundtrack too.

Lost Highway (1997)

Awesome but confusing as hell
2 August 2005
It starts in a relatively normal way and I enjoy the simple plot and increasingly dark mood. Just like "narrator15's" comment I got lost early on in the drive. I tried hard to understand and think about what Lynch is symbolist with the series of events and characters which unfold in a random and anarchic fashion. I enjoy a thought provoking film like Malice and Se7en but this film frustrated me but was entertaining at the same time.

I gave it 7/10 it would have been 6/10 if not for an awesome soundtrack especially the I'm deranged-edit track by David Bowie which closed the film with the view of the dashed road lines which reminded me of the end of Terminator 2.
