Magnolia (1999)
Overwrought, over acted and wallowing in faux emotion
Overwrought, over acted and wallowing in faux emotion this is a bad film. Nothing is ever spoken when it could be shouted and the musical score then attempts to drown out the shouting. It's a long film so all the hysteria and noise become very tiring. The links between characters feel contrived and not one is likeable making it hard to engage in the film. I'm guessing Phillip Seymour Hoffman's hospice nurse character is supposed to be the one sympathetic character, but being constantly on the verge of tears looking after a dying scumbag suggests he'd be highly unsuited to the job.
There is a lengthy prologue about unlikely events that supposedly happened but in the end it seems irrelevant to the movie.
Into Eternity: A Film for the Future (2010)
So slow
Important and interesting topic but presented terribly slowly.
The Conversation (1974)
Unbearably slow
Maybe the dullest movie I've ever seen. So slow it's immensely irritating, perhaps to pad out a pretty thin story.
Efterforskningen (2020)
Painfully slow
So slow it felt like real time. Strangely emotionless and plodding reenactment of the investigation. Had a scant knowledge of the case from news articles at the time and feel none the wiser about what happened.
Ava (2020)
You've seen this movie before
Rehash of numerous movies of guild of assassins turning on one of their own with a few of the recovered alcoholic cliches thrown in for good measure. Expected so much better of a movie with Colin Farrell and John Malkovich.
Hardcore Henry (2015)
Ignore the ratings this movie is great fun
Crazy movie. The first person point of view takes some getting used to and I'm not sure if there wasn't a better movie to be had with a more conventional format. But it moves at a frenetic pace with action and comedy a plenty and Sharlto Copley puts in a super entertaining and suitably over the top performance.
The Good Liar (2019)
Ridiculous story
I suppose there are worse films so I've given it two stars. Having said that none spring to mind.
Tracks a well worn path and then to make it more interesting takes a sharp turn into extremely far fetched territory.
Mortal Engines (2018)
Great looking film
Worth watching for the gorgeous sets and I guess a sort of steam punk aesthetic. Really liked the look of this movie
After Life (2019)
Nauseatingly sentimental but funny in parts
Such a pity because a great cast of characters and very funny in parts but repetitive cheesiness is a drag.
Dredd (2012)
Thrilling and stylish
Great pace, effects, style, good job from all the actors. Special hats off to the set designs blending Johannesburg into the dystopian future city - loved the Peach Tree building!
The World According to Jeff Goldblum (2019)
Pleasant diversion
Such a good natured program. Jeff Goldblum is an engaging host as he finds delight in everyday things and the people involved with them.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Entertaining and a bit different
You can probably pick holes in the story but it moves at a healthy pace and maintains the tension throughout. I liked it!
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Great fun
A lot of the plot lines seem derivative of old star wars movies but the pace, glorious visual spectacle and great performances from Daisy Ridley and in particular Adam Driver raise this movie to a level not seen since the original trilogy. Just loved it!
The Irishman (2019)
Slow and dull
Slow, linear, endless dull dialogue and no characters you can care about or find that interesting. Anti aging fun only because of the disconnect between the youngish faces and the hunched and jerky old man movements. No idea why it is rated so highly.
A Cure for Wellness (2016)
Entertaining
The first three quarters of this movie are great - 10 out of 10. Subtle, tense, claustrophobic and unusual. The last quarter or so are let down by the story becoming a bit silly. That said it's still a very enjoyable film. Beautifully shot and paced and well acted.
