Dune (2021)
10/10
I don't usually write reviews
24 October 2021
I used to be a big reviewer back in the day but I stopped because movies lost that magic for me. Dune sparked that flame inside of me and I got super excited for an upcoming movie. After a long wait I finally saw it with my family and my uncle who is a huge Dune fan like myself. After it finished I had a feeling inside of me that told me that this movie will hopefully ignite a whole new generation of sci-fi films. Denis Villeneuve should be extremely proud. He has faithfully adapted and extremely hard book. He made the film detailed enough to make avid fans happy and explained things enough to keep the jew comers involved and immersed. Timothée Chalamet played a great Paul and he is a very good actor. The rest of the cast knocked it out of the park as well. The visuals are stunning and the story is next to none. Please go support this film. We need to see part 2.

Hereditary

Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

It should be noted that this film is incredibly disturbing. I am not a person that is easily scared and I am usually not impressed with horror films. This film thoroughly impressed me with the amount of quality scared and the eerie atmosphere.

The story starts off very fast and builds the tense very well. All the characters are believable and relatable in a way. The story creates a very mysterious tone but keeps a very scary feeling throughout. The plot gets extremely disturbing very quickly and keeps the disturbing imagery flowing smoothly and gracefully. The use of silence makes your stomach turn as you anticipate a scare, sometimes the scare come but other times it leaves you waiting.

The acting is extraordinary. Toni Collette delivers a stunning and frightening performance. She is truly an amazing actress. Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro also give amazing performances. Gabriel Byrne performs very well and is my favorite character in this film.

The pacing is perfect. The first half hour of the film was scare free but the remaining runtime left me tense and scared.

This is one of the most effective horror films to date. The ending left he disturbed and I had chills running down my spine as the credits rolled. I left the theatre frightened and had that feeling of maybe I shouldn't have watched that.

Spoiler Below

I thought the father's death was a little weak and that the plot twist that Joan was friends with the grandmother was telegraphed. Either way, the film stilled held onto its power of disturbing the mind.

Spoiler Over

Pros: Disturbing and dark story, great use of silence, music, and the building of tension, perfect pacing, very disturbing imagery, amazing acting, Toni Collette's stunning performance, and an ending that will leave you scared and hopeless

Cons: Read the Spoiler section if you want to know the cons

Overall Rating: 9.1

P.S. This is one of the best films of 2018. I would not recommend this film to people who are easily scared. This film only had about two jump scares but this film will leave your disturbed and wishing you hadn't watched it. If you want a less scary witch's tale, I would recommend The Witch: A New England Folk Tale

Lady Bird (2017)
8/10
Lady Bird
12 June 2018
A striking directorial debut by Greta Gerwig, this tender, semi-autobiographical love letter to Gerwig's hometown explores the gulf between childhood and adulthood with touching, witty humor. Gerwig first gained acclaim for writing and acting in "mumblecore" indies; she seemed to find her own voice and persona in films like Damsels in Distress and Frances Ha. Now she brings that persona, fully formed, to the nuanced, wonderful Lady Bird. (It resembles Frances Ha, which she co-wrote, in many good ways.) And, standing in for the director on-screen, Oscar nominee Ronan perfectly adopts Gerwig's trademark sweet/scatterbrain delivery, sprinkling it with soul and humanity. The movie is more about a time, a state of mind, and an emotional place than it is a story, and Gerwig allows scenes to wander off track in a delightful way.

Even if they have nothing to do with Lady Bird, scenes sometimes follow secondary characters for no other reason than Gerwig likely found them interesting, sad, or funny. Not everything is explained. Special care is given to Lady Bird's mother, Marion, who's no-nonsense and borderline mean, but also truly loving. Metcalf gives a fine performance in the role. The overall use of music, cityscape images, and feisty rhythms round out a wonderfully personal, open-hearted movie.

The movie is an experience that should be seen. It is a great debut film and deserves some praise as a great coming of age film.

The Valley (2017)

The Valley
12 June 2018
This teen suicide drama isn't so much "good" and not that effective. The Valley is intended to shake up parents into examining their older children's behavior for signs of anxiety and depression -- and to take stock of how they might be unintentionally contributing to the pressure. The film's impact is not strong at all. The teen suicide craze since 13 Reasons Why is getting old.

Teens will be intrigued by seeing childhood throwback Jake T. Austin (Wizards of Waverly Place) in the role of a college bad boy. Unfortunately, the rest of the actors' performances have moments that lack authenticity. The constant flashbacks could leave some viewers confused and the pace is uneven. Audiences are also never allowed to forget that the story runs parallel to John Steinbeck's The Pearl. Saila Kariat's debut effort as a filmmaker is uneven.

All in all, this film is miss able and should not be seen in theaters.

Ocean's Eight (2018)

Ocean's Eight
12 June 2018
Bullock, Blanchett, and their co-stars don't reinvent George Clooney's formula here, but the ensemble's camaraderie and notable talents make for a fun heist flick that combines fashion and humor. Ocean's 8 certainly isn't a giant misfire (as was expected by some), and the few mentions of Danny (who's never seen in the movie because he's supposedly dead) and his legendary crew are only necessary to keep the Ocean name in the title. The intergenerational cast should appeal to all ages, although there isn't an Elliott Gould-equivalent actress to add to the festivities. (Note to screenwriters for the inevitable sequel: Add a character older than Bullock, who's only 53.) Still, it's amusing to see the utterly New York Awkwafina (who plays the sleight-of-hand expert) trade jokes with Bonham Carter, who seems to channel her favorite real-life fashion icon, Vivienne Westwood, in her role.

Rihanna is understated as a hacker with a penchant for a daily smoke, and Paulson is believable (as always) as a suburban mom who comes out of criminal retirement for the big score. All of the actresses are in fine form, really, although Kaling doesn't seem to get as much screen-time as she should, and there should have been a bit more about Debbie and Lou's history as criminal partners. The setting of the storied Met Gala offers plenty of cameo opportunities, with fashion celebs like Anna Wintour and Heidi Klum getting lines, while others -- like Katie Holmes, Kim Kardashian West, the Jenner sisters, and others -- are shown briefly to add to the story's authenticity. Is this movie going to earn any awards? No. But is it entertaining and worth seeing for the cast and clothes? Maybe not.

All in all, this film could be missed.

Batman & Robin
12 June 2018
Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

This film is terrible. The story is pathetic because the dialogue is horrible. The amount of stupid puns and ridiculous antics are eye numbing.

The acting is horrible. Just skip this film and save yourself some time and innocence.

The runtime is overlong, the film sucked at the five minute mark.

This is one of the worst Batman films ever made and one of the worst films ever.

Deadpool 2
27 May 2018
Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

After the massive success of Deadpool, we were bound to have a sequel. The sequel is just as good if not better than the first. Deadpool two has a more original and less cliched story. It also introduces some amazing new characters. As always, the humor is spot on and the violence is over the top.

The acting is very good. Josh Brolin plays Cable magnificently. I was skeptical going into the film but he blew me away. He is tough and totally awesome. Ryan Reynolds once again is a perfect Deadpool. Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Karan Soni, Brianna Hildebrand, and Stefan Kapicic all perform very well. Zazie Beetz was cast as Domino and at first, I was not happy. But she performed very well as Domino. All the X-Force members perform very well and are hilarious. I did not like Julian Dennison's character and he is a bad actor. He has a weird voice and his body is shaped like a pear. He looks like a Teletubby.

The pacing is fast and the runtime is good.

The CGI for Juggernaut looked quite bad compared to Colossus

Pros: Original and hilarious story, great jokes and gags, amazing characters, great new characters, Josh Brolin as an amazing Cable, Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, good acting, fast pacing, and a good runtime

Cons: Julian Dennison looks weird, he is not a good actor, and the CGI for Juggernaut looked cheap

Deadpool
27 May 2018
Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

After the horrible representation of Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, we finally get the Deadpool we always wanted. The film is hilarious, gruesome, graphic, and did I mention hilarious? The story is a basic revenge plot but the characters make the film amazing. The jokes used throughout the film are mostly solid. The use of graphic violence and language add to the hilarity. The fourth wall breaks are amazing. The opening credit scene is amazing.

The acting is very good. Ryan Reynolds was born to play Deadpool. He imbodies Deadpool and he does so in a believable way. Ed Skrein, despite his bad performance in Transporter: Refueled, is actually a great actor. He plays a really good bad guy. Morena Baccarin also performs well as Wilson's love interest. Karan Soni, Stefan Kapicic, Brianna Hildebrand, and T.J. Miller all perform very well.

The pacing is very fast. We are instantly throw into the movie with some funny jokes and brutal violence. The runtime is not overly long.

Deadpool is a perfect blend of action, comedy, and violence.

I did find some of the jokes not very funny and the story was a little cliché.

Pros: A perfect blend of action and comedy, brutal violence, amazing characters, hilarious jokes, fourth wall breaks, good acting, an amazing performance by Ryan Reynolds, fast pacing, and a short runtime

Cons: Some of the jokes were not funny and the plot was a little cliché

Luther (2010–2019)

Luther
24 May 2018
Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

Luther is a dark and disturbing crime drama. Each episode has a linear story that mostly deals with Luther's personal life. Each episode also has a criminal who is murdering people in very disturbing ways. I found the stories to be very good mostly because the series has great characters.

The acting is very good. Idris Elda performs exceptionally. Ruth Wilson also performs spectacularly as the psychopath Alice Morgan. She is so seductive and disturbingly sexy. Dermot Crowley, Michael Smiley, Paul McGann, and Warren Brown all perform very well. Nikki Amuka-Bird performs the worst in my eyes. She is ugly, has weird lips, and her characters sucked. I wish Rose Leslie was in more episodes besides the final two. She is such a great actress and she is so beautiful.

The pacing in most episodes is slow and the runtime for each episode is a little long

Pros: Dark and disturbing stories, great characters, amazing performances by Idris Elda and Ruth Wilson, and all around good acting

Cons: Slow pacing, the episodes are long, Nikki Amuka-Bird is ugly and her character sucked, and I wish that Rose Leslie was in more of the episodes because she is a great actress and she is beautiful

Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

The Wachowski Brothers sci-fi classic is a true classic. The story is complex, original, intriguing, and extremely detailed. The characters are all unique and they are all very interesting. The story is full of philosophical questions that make you think and the film is so complex it needs to be watched multiple times.

The acting is very good. Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, Gloria Foster, Joe Pantoliano, Marcus Chong, and many others perform perfectly. Keanu Reeves is a very dry actor. He is very dry in this film but he plays his part well.

The pacing is perfect and the runtime is perfect.

The special effects are good even today.

Pros: Complex, original, and extremely detailed story, great philosophical questions asked, unique characters, amazing acting, perfect pacing, a good runtime, and amazing special effects

Cons: Keanu Reeves is very dry throughout the film

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi
23 May 2018
Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

The third installment in the Star Wars series is the weakest. The film takes a lighter tone and this is its downfall. The story is still very complex and the characters are amazing yet the film has a light tone. The ending is good and the introduction to Yoda is amazing. I am not a big fan of the Ewok scenes only because it feels cheesy.

The acting is very good. All the actors in the film perform very well.

The pacing is perfect but the runtime is overlong.

The special effects are once again amazing, the music is wondrous, and the sound effects are perfect.

Even though this film has its flaws, it should be seen by all Star Wars fans

Pros: Complex story, amazing characters, great special effects, wondrous music, perfect sound effects, great acting, a good ending, and good pacing

Cons: The light tone is bad, an overlong runtime, the film is a little childish, and the Ewok scenes are cheesy

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope
23 May 2018
Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

The first entry in this legendary saga is a masterpiece. George Lucas has created a unique and very complex world were your imagination can run free and wild. The characters are all very unique and complex. The story is amazing. The battles are insane and the special effects are, even now, amazing. The use of practical effects makes the film perfect.

The acting is very good. Mark Hamill can seem annoying at times but he performs very well. Harrison Ford's legendary role as Han Solo is amazing. Carrie Fisher and Alec Guinness also perform very well. All the actors in this film perform very well.

The pacing is perfect and the runtime is actually short, I wanted more.

The music used in this film is amazing. The themes and ideas presented in this film are deep and moving.

Pros: Complex and interesting world, amazing story, unique characters, amazing special effects, good acting, perfect pacing, and amazing battle scenes

Cons: Luke can seem annoying, the runtime is a little short, and the acting is a little dated

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
23 May 2018
Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

Very few sequels have been better than the first film. This film is better than the first. Empire tells a much darker story then the first Star Wars. It is still very complex and has amazing battle scenes. This films story shows us how evil can win and how good cannot always triumph over evil.

The acting is very good. Mark Hamill's character has transition from being slightly annoying to being a great role model. Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher once again perform perfectly.

The pacing is perfect and the runtime is perfect.

The special effects are amazing and the music is incredible. The sound effects in this film are also amazing.

Pros: Darker story, complex plot, amazing characters, great acting, amazing battle scenes, perfect pacing, a good runtime, incredible special effects, wonderful music, and amazing sound effects

Cons: None

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
23 May 2018
Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

This film is a classic that should be seen by everyone. The story is funny, disturbing, and the characters are so unique and genuine. The story shows us what can happen is authoritative figures become consumed in their own power.

The acting is amazing. Jack Nicholson is perfect. He plays a wisecracking man who defies all authority. Louise Fletcher plays the infamous Nurse Ratched. She is absolutely perfect. All of the actors in this film perform very well.

The pacing is perfect and the runtime is short for the source material.

Milos Forman has made films, that on paper seem mundane and boring, that capture the mind and soul. He is a master of storytelling.

Pros: Funny yet disturbing story, a great character study, unique characters, amazing acting, perfect pacing, a good runtime, and how Milos Forman can create such intriguing and capturing films

Cons: The film is rather old but it holds up in most parts. The acting can seem outdated and the cameras used for the film make the film seem grainy

Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

Christopher Nolan has created another complex and extremely original story. The plot is full of foreshadowing and is perfectly crafted. The story makes the audience pay attention and the characters are so unique you have to love them all. The concept of the film is also amazing.

The acting is very good. Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Dileep Rao, Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, Tom Berenger, Marion Cotillard, Pete Postlethwaite, and Lukas Haas all perform very well. Ken Watanabe is a very good actor but his accent makes it hard to understand him. He also describes very important plot points and at times you cannot understand him.

The pacing is perfect and the runtime is good.

Pros: Complex and original story, unique characters, amazing acting, perfect pacing, a good runtime, and an amazing concept

Cons: Ken Watanabe has a very thick accent that makes it hard to understand what he is saying

Forrest Gump
23 May 2018
Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

Forrest Gump tells the slightly funny yet saddening tale of Forrest Gump. The story is uplifting, sad, brutal, and at times very funny. The characters are unique and genuine. The story flows with ease.

The acting is very good. Tom Hanks performs exceptionally well. Robin Wright also performs well. Sally Fields and Gary Sinise both perform with power and presence.

The pacing is a little slow and the runtime is a little overlong.

One thing I don't like about the film is how Wright's character takes advantage of Forrest so many times and yet, at the end, we are supposed to feel bad for her.

Pros: Uplifting yet sad story, unique characters, amazing acting, and some really powerful scenes

Cons: Slow pacing, an overlong runtime, and how we are supposed to feel bad for Wright's character even though she is a scumbag

Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

Hostiles started out with a bang. It was brutal and shocking. I was instantly intrigued and engrossed. The story had promise but it fell flat towards the middle and end. The characters are at best okay. I liked Rosamund Pike's character the best but only because I think she is beautiful. The story for me was dull and lacked power.

The acting is very good. Rosamund Pike performs the best in my eyes. Christian Bale, Jesse Plemons, and Ben Foster all perform very well also.

The pacing is very slow and the runtime is overly long.

The cinematography is beautiful. This is one of the best aspects of the film.

Pros: The beginning of the film, Rosamund Pike's character, good acting, and beautiful cinematography

Cons: The story falls flat after the beginning, very slow pacing, an overlong runtime, and the story was just dull and lacked power

Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

First off, this is my second Woody Allen film, the first being Midnight in Paris which was very good. After watching this film, I hate Woody Allen. His character is narcissistic and rude. He always thinks about himself and his voice made me want to kill myself. The story is slow and boring. The characters constantly talk about sex and there is no way Woody Allen would ever get that much puss. He sleeps with at least five women throughout the film. That in and of itself is impossible. He is a short, ugly, and annoying man. The film is so shapeless and it repeats itself so many times, it is an utter chore to watch.

The acting is bad. Woody Allen casted himself in a film he directed (He has an ego problem). He is really bad also. Diane Keaton is quite good though. She plays a quirky yet cute woman.

The pacing is horrible. The film is slow and the runtime feels so long.

All in all, Woody Allen sucks.

Pros: Diane Keaton performs well

Cons: Woody Allen plays a narcissistic and annoying man who thinks that he knows everything, Woody Allen would never get that much puss, the story is boring, the characters suck, bad acting, slow pacing, and a long runtime.

Fight Club is one of those films that everyone should see. It is fun, slick, brutal, and most of all smart. David Fincher has created a well-crafted film that ends with a shocking scene. The film explores what would happen in political chaos.

The acting is great. Edward Norton and Brad Pitt both perform perfectly. They both play characters that are night and day, total opposites.

The pacing is very good but the runtime is overlong.

I would not consider this film a masterpiece but it is a very good film.

Cons: The runtime is overly long

Sergio Leone is a master at creating amazing westerns. This film is one of his best. The story is full of tense moments. The characters are so complex and the dialogue is amazing. The scenery is beautiful and the music adds so much to the tension of the film.

The acting is great. Clint Eastwood was born to be a gunslinger. In this film he shines as Blondie. Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef also perform exceptionally well.

The pacing is perfect. Leone takes his time created the characters and rising the tension.

The film is quite old and some of the special effects and violence is outdated. All in all, this film is very good.

Avengers: Infinity War
20 May 2018
Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

After 10 years of character and plot building, we finally get what we have been waiting for. Infinity War is a film of epic proportion that makes first Avengers film look like a small feat. Infinity War has a complex story filled with exquisite fight sequences, humor, and amazing characters. The biggest hurdle for this film was fitting in a lot of characters in only two and a half hours. Anthony and Joe Russo successfully give all the characters a fair amount of screen time and introduces use to the amazingly effective Thanos. The story is filled with emotional moments and has some power when it comes to the reality of Thanos' power.

The acting is very good. Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Zoe Saldana, Chadwick Boseman, Karen Gillan, Tom Hiddleston, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Chris Pratt, and many others perform very well. Josh Brolin performs the best in my eyes. He plays Thanos who is extremely complex and is the second-best superhero villain I have ever witnessed behind The Joker. Thanos truly is the best part of the film in my eyes.

The pacing is perfect. Infinity War throws us into the action immediately and doesn't let up. The runtime is also perfect.

There are a couple of things a didn't like in the film. Peter Dinklage's character looked rather foolish. His accent and the way his character looked made him seem fake. I also didn't like the Wakanda scenes. Their accents are extremely annoying, in my eyes, and some the characters in Wakanda are kinda cringy.

All in all, Avengers: Infinity War is a masterclass superhero film. It is the second-best superhero film ever made right behind Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight. I truly loved it and I am really excited for part two.

Pros: Intense, emotional, and heartbreaking story, good humor, amazing characters, very good acting, Josh Brolin as Thanos, Thanos being one of the greatest movie villains ever, great pacing, a good runtime, and how Thanos is a really effective villain throughout the entire film

Cons: Peter Dinklage's character is and looks bad and most of the Wakanda scenes and characters are kinda cringy

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
20 May 2018
Short and Simple Review by WubsTheFadger

The third and finale film in The Lord of the Rings series is the best. Peter Jackson left the best for last in this epic of all epics. The scale of the film is huge and the battles and set pieces are massive. This film is a masterpiece that needs to be experienced. The ending is touching and brought chills.

The acting is once again amazing. Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Orlando Bloom, Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, Sean Bean, Billy Boyd, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Andy Serkis, John Rhys-Davies, Dominic Monaghan, Viggo Mortensen, Liv Tyler, Hugo Weaving, Bernard Hill, Bruce Hopkins, Brad Dourif, Miranda Otto, Karl Urban, and David Wenham are all amazing. I have to stress once again that they are also perfectly cast in this film.

The pacing and runtime is perfect.

The battles in this film are grand, spectacular, and massive.
