Billions: Hostis Humani Generis (2022)
This episode was pretty fun
Billions has been a great show for a long time, but it was in need of a refresh - there was only so many times that Axe and Chuck could go toe-to-toe.
What was at first a difficult transition is starting to bed down nicely. I like that the writers has have given Sacker a new lease of life and that they've brought in a new lawyer. Sacker's discomfort at 'losing' for the first time in her life was fun.
Gradually I'm warming to Scooter as well. At first he was just obnoxious and annoying but we are starting to see his humanity. The moment he and Wags shared listening to Harry Chapin was touching, and his relationship with his Nephew is further illuminating.
And finally Prince is starting to get some appeal. The whole holier than though moral superiority play was just getting annoying, but now there are hints of a darker sub-plot with several references to "after". I feel like an almighty "reveal" of Prince's dark and dastardly ulterior motives will be coming at some point.
Only hope Chuck sees it coming (fingers crossed)!
P. S. Reason i didn't give this an 8 was several of the plot lines were a bit silly.
Interstellar (2014)
As close to perfect as a film can be
8 years on (!) and Interstellar is still as beautiful, impactful, gut-wrenching and exciting as ever.
At its heart this is a story about the bond between a father and his kids, with notable focus on his relationship with his daughter. Coop is torn between his personal drive to explore, his duty to try and help save humanity and his love for his kids. And once he is out in space, it becomes a constant battle to get back home to see them. And he is brutally aware that each challenge thrown their way, means lost time with his kids.
It is also a movie about sacrifice. What are you prepared to give up to help others? And the limits of the sacrifice, as Matt Damon's cameo so poignantly demonstrates.
Watching it when it was released 8 years ago I loved this movie for the scope, the effects, the story and the performances. Now, as a father, I love it for all the aforementioned reasons and more.
Finally, I think this has to be the best Zimmerman, Nolan marriage to date. The soundtrack is incredible.
Billions: Burn Rate (2022)
Oh dear.
Been at home sick for a few days and took the time to binge watch seasons 1 and 2 which reminded my why this USED to be my favourite show of all time.
The early seasons were sooo good.
Returning to season 6, it has drifted so far from where it started to become almost unrecognisable.
This season is boring, with terrible dialogue, one dimensional characters, limited plots, no intrigue or tension, even the music is peppy and cheesy.
Mike Prince is a such a tedious character. "Don't use the b-word in front of me". Give me a break. If you are going to "replace" Axe, find a decent actor and give them a decent character.
And seriously, what's with the pop up price lists....???
Oh dear.
Good to see Ira back though.
If you're fed up of where Billions is at, just go back and watch the early seasons. You won't be disappointed.
Billions: STD (2022)
Hmmm...seems to be improving.
First two episodes of this series were pretty average. This was a big step up in quality. Some interesting/fun dynamics forming. Maybe series 6 will be a success after all....
