CBGB (2013)
A must-see for rock music lovers, especially for punk and new-wave of late 70's
You probably have to be a fan for late 70's/early 80's punk/new wave musical groups to fully appreciate this movie. If so, the film not only recreates the feeling of the first steps of modern era rock giants, like Blondie,Ramones,Television,Talking Heads etc. but is also a kind of satisfactorily faithful documentary. For many would probably be just an entertaining movie with good soundtrack and a marvellous Alan Rickman, thus a 6 or 7 is rather suitable. But the "true" dedicated fans, will be amazed of the impressive come-to-life one hundred percent live playing actors-musicians,depicting the real groups. For fans of the kind, this movie is exactly what "Rush" is for Formula one lovers.A "nine" at least.
Gilda (1946)
An all time classic with an all time beauty in its cast
By today's standards Gilda is just a good, decent romantic film noir. But there is no point in judging this movie by high artistic standards or even modern ethics or erotic or social behaviour. It's simply a must for movie romantic lovers/fans and especially for fans of one of the most pretty(the No1?)actresses of all time,Rita Hayworth, who nevertheless is a very good performer too.Glenn Ford is probably the best actor of the cast, though George Macready both as the role of the "husband" and an actor is not equal of Rita/Glenn.
The film hasn't got the acting quality or the drama of "Gone with the wind", or the atmosphere of "Casablanca" for example, but it's worth a place in the pantheon of the big screen along with movies of the kind.
L'incredibile storia dell'isola delle rose (2020)
freedom is the only thing, man of 21st century hasn't achieved yet
If you're not a teenager or at your 20's, you understand that a society without bureaucracy ,borders, nations, classes, complicated and even unfair justice system, etc., is an utopia. But most of us,even for once of our life time would like or tried to change the world. The tragicomic fact is that almost all governments more all less democratic, would prefer to violently repress any attempt of creation of a different political system to the conventional one, than to let it faint and die by itself.
Fear of the unknown or the groundbreaking is the main characteristic of any political regime for ever and ever.
Fatman (2020)
An utterly crap script delivered in fancy wrap
It seems that there is no vaccine against uninspired scripts in American movie industry.
The story is a little bit of fairy tail,a little bit of sci-fi and a little bit of western and that's ok so far, but the whole plot works out as an excuse for massive gun fight.
An utterly crap script delivered in fancy wrap (dolby sound, good cinematography, decent acting etc.) the epitome of high budget contemporary American cinema (with a few exemptions of course).
Pink Floyd: The Wall (1982)
....after all is not easy banging your heart on some mad buggers wall...
38 years on and this movie adaptation of PINK FLOYD's masterpiece is still timeliness.
Rise of fascism,racism,violence,consuming,environmental impact,isolation,educational system's failures,war,drug dependence,stardom vanity,etc. are all there.
It's not a political thriller, animation, silent film, musical, opera, video clip, documentary and it's all this at the same time!
One of the greatest works of art, mankind has ever created, has been successfully transferred into the big screen. There is no point of discussing the volume of faithful reproduction of the album, because the film simply translates the lyrics into pictures. If someone likes and is moved by the album, automatically becomes a fan of the film.
The actors ,although there is almost no dialogues, and perhaps just because of that,do a terrific job.
Of course time has taken its toll and for some lucky thousands like me,who have watched sometime in the last decade the live Roger Waters' adaptation of the album, given the superior sound and technical effects, realise that the movie though dated,is remarkable and excellent result achieved, back in 1982.
I know several FLOYD fans that don't like the music of "the Wall".
If you're one of them don't bother to watch the movie.
I,on the contrary, think it's plot (lyrics) are more up to date than ever,I could write tenths of pages analysing the Wall, but I prefer to enjoy it for the 30th time and still be touched like the first time when I was 16 years old.
Luther (2010)
try to be too main stream, too pretentious, too pejorative for its own good
If you're in for something truly worthwhile, captivating and more realistic, watch instead "unforgotten", "broadchurch","happy valley" ,"bron"or "river".
Ashes to Ashes (2008)
I miss John Simm
This particular series is more interesting for someone who hasn't seen "Life on Mars",cause the main idea is repeated less successfully, but nevertheless is fun to watch. I'm a strong supporter of "Life on Mars" and subsequently I do comparisons because 3/5 of its main characters are deployed in "Ashes to Ashes".
"Ashes to Ashes" is not a sequel to "Life on Mars", although it refers slightly to "Sam".The new heroin Keeley Hawes is very good and the general feel of sexual attraction between her and "Gene Hunt" is an extra entertaining element in the general plot.
By the way Philip Glenister is marvellous once again. To sum up:
Pros:
-Although there is a plot revealed progressively, almost every episode is self-contained
-The main characters' level of acting is high and convincing.
-The soundtrack of early 80's hits is excellent and touching for anyone that grew up with that kind of music
-The wardrobe hairdo's etc. depicting the 80's is also excellent
Cons:
-The plot in most of episodes is rather shallow and hasn't enough suspense
-The lack of depth and brilliant scenario "Life on Mars" has,is obvious.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Crapator / Dark fate for adult watchers
Suitable for ages 5-11 and for IQ's no greater than 40 (2 stars just for the shake of T2). Some terminator should travel back to the past and stop Cameron from continuing the saga.
Utøya 22. juli (2018)
Impressively realistic-like view
I was aware of the real tragic incident described in this movie only partially.I mean,I knew that a deranged racist had killed tenths of innocent youngsters in a camp-campaign on a Norwegian island and then got caught by the police and imprisoned.
So as I was watching (alone in my home-cinema),a documentary-like film, although I felt tension and sorrow for the non-stop agony and suffering of the actors ,I was wandering if the director was exaggerating in terms of the duration of the terroristic attack and the ignorance of what was happening by the unlucky victims being present. A few minutes before the ending I got almost angry.I couldn't have anymore.I was thinking without realising "please stop this nightmare!!".I got the impression that the film had started and ended equally abruptly.
Then, rather shocked and moved by the facts I had just watched,I sat down and read about the hole real story. All the facts with details(i.e the misjudged importance of the situation by the authorities etc). Then my shock was even bigger! I realised that I had just watched a movie describing as truly as it could get ,what a young teen girl would have felt and thought, being caught in the middle of a hellish situation in real time!! I understood and realised all the terror ,the panic, the desperation all people present in the incident would have lived.I give my congratulations to the director.
For the record, the shootings are awesomely realistic, combined with the anguish you feel, you think that any moment now,a bullet is coming for you.
Flashbacks of a Fool (2008)
deeply touching
A great movie, especially if you're over 40-45 years old and fan of early 70's glam rock movement.
Daniel Craig is superb, although he's not appearing here more than in 30% of the plot.
It makes you compare the simple, poor, spontaneous and rather naive life of the post-war past with that of consuming, shallow, hard and eccentric life of today. One man into two different worlds, the successful,worn-hearted middle-aged one vs his sentimental youth.Has anything been left from his young self? Coincidentally and sad news from his past life, give him the opportunity to find out and furthermore to fill the gap he created many years ago.Alas (or thankfully?),people can walk back into their past but faces, lovers and situations of it, have gone forever out of reach.
It reminds me of a less romantic and poetic "Cinema Paradiso",but equally worth and sentimental.
Young "Daniel Craig" and Felicity Jones are also very good, music is gorgeous.
