Anjaam Pathiraa (2020)
A thriller with a bit of cliches.
It's a decent thriller. You can't call this movie as great.
It has some plot holes and lot of things felt so forced and convenient.
Anwar Hussain (Kunchakko Boban) figures out lot of things quite easily.
The english dialogues were annoying and should've been avoided.
Unnimaya Prasad who plays the role of Police Commisioner is a perfect example of miscast. At least they could've used her real voice.
Speaking of other roles, Kunchacko Boban, Jinu Joseph, Sreenath Bhasi ect has done their roles well. Indrans and Jaffer Idukki has done an exceptional job and I feel this is Jaffer Idukki's career best movie.
The movie reminds me of thrillers like Memories and Ratsasan. Sushin Shyam kind of disapoointed me with his work. The BGM is good while watching but it's not haunting or memorable and it felt like BGMs from Joker and Christopher Nolan movies. Shyju Khalid's camerawork is awesome as always.
Director Midhun Manuel Thomas proves his talent of dealing with versatile movies like Aadu, Ann Mariya Kalippilaanu and now this.
Despite the flaws, I would definitely recommend you watch this in theatres.
A movie with confused politics.
Bala is good. Don't get me wrong. It deals with an important issue and has great comedy. It has a bald protagonist which is maybe for the first time in bollywood. Unfortunately, they cast a light skinned woman and colored her black instead of casting a dark skinned woman. Even though the film is about accepting ourselves, sometimes it says somebody else's acceptance would be fine. Latika(Bhumi Pednekar) is quite underwritten and a misfit.
It's ironical that Yami Gautham, who has been a model for fairness creams is casted in a movie which is against those things.
It's worth a watch and could have been a lot better.
The Sky Is Pink (2019)
Never cried so much watching a movie.
This is not something we have not seen before. We have heard or seen or even went through similar situations. We know what's going to happen in the movie. But still, Shonali Bose makes tears stream down on your face.
I love how she picturized story of Chaudhary family without being so dramatic. The movie felt so real because of the direction. Yes, we get to see it's a real story at the end but still, Shonali deserves the credit.
The actors have done an excellent job. Even the kids. Farhan Akthar and Priyanka Chopra gave their career best performance. The make up artist deserves an applaud for keeping their looks realistic at all age. Whoever did the make up of Chichchore, take notes.
Grab some tissues and watch this.
Just watch Maheshninte Prathikaram
Nimir maybe an okayish watch for the first timers. But to those who have seen Maheshinte Prathikaaram, this just feels terrible.
Priyadarshan has always been doing remakes. I think only a very few his movies were original. But his talent was the ability to take the core story and blend it with another culture. But he fails this time.
It's evident that Priyadarshan didn't care about this movie at all from the casting itself. The story is really simple. It was the actors who made Maheshinte Prathikaram a success.
Let's have a look at who replaced who.
Udayanidhi Stalin replaced Fahad Faasil. Seriously, Priyadarshan? You had to cast a mediocre actor for a role which was played by one of the finest in India.
Parvathy Nair(LOL) for Anusree.
Namitha Pramod for Aparna Balamurali. Aparna was excellent in the original.
And he casted comedy actors so that he can incorporate some comedy into the movie. But one thing he forgot was the humor in the movie was situational and nothing else.
There were some nice shots but, the camera work is really bad. The highlights in the background were blown out in many scenes.
And camera doesn't focus on the faces of the actors.
You can't connect with the characters because you don't get to see what they feel in their face.
Few of the best scenes from the original are either missing or executed terribly. The scene in which Mahesh smiles at Soumya at her wedding, Mahesh asking Soumya "You got rid of me so nicely", The scene in which Mahesh takes a beautiful picture of Jimsy. Those scenes were so realistic and it was really bad in the remake.
Basically, I recommend you watch the original with subtitles. Don't expect a mass entertainer. Maheshinte Prathikaaram is a raw and realistic masterpiece from Dileesh Pothan.
Aakashaganga II (2019)
It's funny even though that wasn't the intention of Vinayan. The ghost made me laugh so hard I actually enjoyed watching it. Every character from the 1st part is dead except for the hero. And he dies in this one.
Heroine is beautiful, but her acting sucks. Hero has neither the looks nor the acting skills.
Thank You Vinayan, for ruining Akaashaganga for me.
Not the usual.
Iblis is totally different from almost every other malayalam movies we've seen.
It takes you to this whole other world where people don't get sad when someone dies because deaths happen very often there that it has become a routine thing in their life.
They could've made it better. The movie drags at some places. But I laughed a lot.
If you love different kinds of movies, this one is for you. Otherwise stay away.
Good Movie with a Bad Title.
It's funny how they named a woman-centric movie is titled Mardaani (manliness). If you give a pass to that cringy dialogue and song at the end, Mardaani is quite a fresh and great approach to the subject.
I loved the casting. Especially the villain. He doesn't fit into the image of underworld sex trafficking villain we've seen. He looks like the boy next door. Almost all the actors looked real except for the kids. But that's understandable.
We've seen a lot of movies where a police officer doesn't play by the rules and does what he feels right. Even though Shivani Shivaji Roy(Rani Mukharjee) is such a character, the fact that she is woman along with everything else in the movie makes it special.
I recommend you watch this.
Aadya Rathri (2019)
Average movie with some jokes.
When the people who gave us Vellimoonga teams up again, definitely our expectations will be definitely high. Truth is Aadya Rathri is a disappointment. Very old-fashioned story and really bad casting makes it bad. Some jokes were good. But the gap between those were really wide. Anaswara Rajan looks too young for the role. And her dialogue delivery is too bad. Same with Sarjano Khalid. Manoharan was safe in the hands of Biju Menon. Somehow, Aju Varghese's character felt like a misfit. Sadly, cinema is not Manoj Guinnes's cup of tea.
It's a one time watchable movie.
Mass Political Drama
That's one way of describing Lucifer. Well, I'll just divide this into pros and cons.
1.Mohanlal - It's not a role with the scope for very high level acting. But he excels when it comes to dialogue delivery and simple stares and looks he gives.
2. Direction and Visuals : Prithviraj successfully created awesome visuals. Pretty good for a beginner.
3. Vivek Oberoi and Vineeth(dancer) - Vivek Oberoi has done great as the evil guy and the voice but Vineeth gives life to the character.
Cons: 1. Lag - The movie is slow paced. It would've been much better if it had more pace. 2. Item Song - That was totally unnecessary. 3. Some fight sequences - The sequence inside jail and the one in the sea. Those were unnecessary.
Watch it for a Mohanlal Show and Prithviraj's stylish making.
Body Shaming at its peak
I couldn't even sit through the movie. There's this character, who doesn't "look good" according to common perspective. He is dark skinned and obese. So guess what the script writer and director did? They just kept body shaming him every chance they got. They even gave the character a dialogue as follows, " Now that you've insulted me, may I go now?". I just don't understand that anybody one the shooting set did not feel anything wrong with this. Just stay away from this stupid movie.
A fresh perspective.
Suraj Venjaramoodu gives us another great performance after Finals and Vikruthi. Android Kunjappan is a fresh take on relationships and technology. Only problem with the movie was few dialogues were difficult to hear and we can't understand what they are saying. Some dialogues were not funny enough.
That was me nitpicking.
Now, I definitely recommend this movie to everyone.
Can't exactly call this a Sci-Fi movie. Because it's not about any scientific things. Yes there's an advanced robot with a certain level of intelligence. But still, can't call it Sci-Fi.
That robot walking is one of the cutest things I've seen in recent times. 😍
Million Dollar Baby (2004)
You'll either love it or hate it.
I loved it.
The only problem I found was the pace of the movie. It's sometimes too fast, sometimes too slow. The boxing matches are very short. It's not the usual matches we've seen. And there isn't much of training either. Clint Eastwood looks and acts the same in both of his movies(Gran Turismo) I've seen.
Anyway, watch it and decide for yourself.
Section 375 (2019)
The Other Side of the Coin.
Well, everything has its plus or minus. Section 375 discuss an important issue which is false accusation of rape or the misuse of laws which were made for the protection of women. As a movie, I didn't find it extra ordinary. It felt more dramatic than realistic. Such an issue demanded more realistic approach like Pink had.
The problem with this movie is, misogynists will now only see this part of the issue. The statistics shown in the movie could be true. But in most cases, the accused are not convicted due to fault in the investigation or the influence of the accused. Refer Valayar case in Kerala.
Once again, it is not a well crafted movie for me. But the issue which it discuss is great.
Another bad one.
Once again Atlee - Vijay combo dissapoints me. Yes, I used to be a fan boy. Yes, I loved when Vijay delivered mass dialogues and gave me goosebumps. There's this saying in Malayalam which says "Adhikam Aayal Amrithum Visham"(Even Nectar becomes poison if it's too much). That's what's happening with Vijay movies now. He does too much. He tries to be more funny with that weird body wiggling. He makes too much voice modulation while delivering punch dialogues. Everything is just too much.
Now, let's come to Bigil. In a film which claims to be dedicated to all women, Vijay defeats a women's football team single handedly on a 1 vs 11 match. And the heroine jumps into his bike when he asks her to be with him for 10 days. We have no idea why she would like him at all. And almost the football matches are copy cat of Chak De India. Except for they are poorly shot.
Only good thing about this was the character of Rayappan. Vijay has finally done something different from his previous roles. Watch Bigil to see that performance.
Love Action Drama (2019)
I don't get why people go after illogical things in the name of "entertainment". Dhyan Sreenivasan should find another career. Direction and script writing is definitely not his cup of tea. His performance in Kunjiramayanam was the only good thing he did.
Coming to LAD, there were some moments that made me laugh and that's it. Even I hated Nivin Pauly's performance. It's obvious that Dhyan is not capable of bringing anything out of the actors.
If you want to make the audience laugh, put some work into it. Be creative, incorporate funny moments into a good script. Take Vellimoonga. It's a perfect example of an entertainer with a great script. It entertained us throughout its runtime.
LAD makes no sense at all. Watch it if you're okay with illogical substandard movies.
So much better than Badla
I didn't like Badla that much. Something was missing. Evaru is one of the very few movies which managed to be better than the original movie. The truth is I completely forgot about Badla because it wasn't that memorable movie for me. I only got to know that it's the remake after I watched Evaru. I haven't watched The Invisible Guest though. The only problem I felt with Evaru is that some camera angles were set so that we can see Reginna Cassandra's cleavage. Well, that's understandable cause the makers might have thought at least that will bring audience into the theaters.
There are a few plot holes here and there. But Evaru is an awesome thriller.
Rang De Basanti (2006)
NOT a Propaganda Movie
To all those people(andh bakths) who says this movie is made for a propaganda, get a life. Yes, the protagonists use violence to act out. But the when, why and how is really important. That's why we can't say this movie sends the wrong message. It doesn't say we should all bad politicians must be shot. It says that's wrong. The protagonists accepts that what they did was wrong.
It shows the hypocrisy of the political party which claims to be patriotic and still does injustice to the country and its soldiers. We all know about coffin scam. It also depicts the mentality of youngsters about India.
"No country is perfect. We have to make it perfect".
A movie so that Hrithik and Tiger can Dance together
These so called "entertainers" are the reason that rest of the world consider Indian movies as third world. Siddharth Anand can create frames but that's it. He got no brains at all. Indian audience doesn't have any self esteem that they will flow into cinemas to watch movies like this.
War is nothing we haven't seen before. I think Agent Vinod was way better despite that climax.
War makes no sense. We're told that Hrithik is the "best agent" in India. Tiger Shroff is selected to his team even if his peripheral vision is compromised. Okay, let's give that a pass. Jai Jai Siva Shankar is one of the worst placement of song I've ever seen. Even Saaho couldn't annoy me as much as this could.
The action sequences are the example of students copying homework but changing it a little so that the teacher won't find out. The bike chase reminded me of Mission Impossible and Knight and Day. The car chase through the snow reminded me of Fast and Furious.
If you like the typical "entertainment" movies from Bollywood watch this. If you've this thing called stay away from this else you'll regret it. Trust me, I know.
N.B: If you wanna watch an action thriller, try Tamil movie Khaidi.
Dream Girl (2019)
Ayushman's Worst I've seen.
I haven't seen movies like Meri Pyari Bindu, Hawaaizaada and Bewakoofiyan. I am a huge fan of Ayushmann. And this is the first time he disappointed me. Dream Girl is another example of a movie that tried to be good by including a message. Writers needs to understand that a movie doesn't become great just because there are some message in it.
There were few good funny scenes here and there. But half of the jokes were not that great. The main problem was that I found the movie too Bollywood. As a whole the movie is so silly that they had to give the protagonist a whole speech to convey the message. That just doesn't fit in.
Now, some may think that I'm being too critical but this is my opinion. I expected more from a guy who gave us movies like Vicky Donor, Nautanki Saala, Article 15, Andhadhun etc.
In short, Dream Girl is a one time watch if you like "Bollywood Entertainers".
Oththa Seruppu Size 7 (2019)
Thank you, Parthiban
This is a really fresh concept in the world of cinema. There is only a single actor in this movie. The director, producer and actor is the same guy. Parthiban deserves the whole credit for this. Even though there's only one actor, there are several characters in this movie. Even if we don't get to see them, we'll get this picture of those characters in our mind. In the whole 1 hr 45 minutes of the movie, I never felt bored watching him. A big applause to the cinematographer and music composer as they enhanced our experience. I feel too bad I couldn't watch this in theater.
Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru (2017)
One of the Most Engaging Thrillers Ever.
Theeran Adhigaram Ondru is capable of making you bite your nails and keeping you at the edge of your seats. Only flaw (totally forgivable) is the commercialization of the movie with little unrealistic fights and cheesy romance.
But that's okay. The rest of the movie is outstanding. Especially the sequence before the interval. Those scenes are so gripping that it won't even let you blink once. Karthi did really well. The Villain deserves our applause. Rakul Preet was okay but there was nothing much for her to do.
Thank you, H.Vinoth, for gifting us such a thriller.
Excellent Making but Forced Screenplay
I don't think this movie deserves such a high rating, but that's my opinion. I don't like it when the story needs to go on due to lack of proper communication among the characters. That feels forced. The links among the characters are pretty good but still, it didn't enable me to connect with them. That romantic song was quite unnecessary. One thing I assure you. Lokesh Kanagaraj is a brilliant director. I recommend you watch this one.
Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (2018)
I liked the beginning and the Bom Diggy song. That's it. The movie became worthless after that. Sonu and Titu are best friends since childhood. Sonu saves Titu from his poisonous relationship with his girlfriend. Titu decides to get married but Sonu can't stand it. Even though Titu finds a great girl, she has to say she is evil because then only Sonu can save Titu again. Seriously? What the heck is this? Sunny Singh Nijjar(Titu) has got to find another career. His acting is really bad. Watch this if you like typical bollywood movies which is full of songs and dance with semi-nude women.
Silly Movie.. But the acting makes it worth watching.
It says the story of two sisters who fights all the time, a father who tries to keep it together, a poisonous friend who makes them fight. The story is predictable but the scripting, direction and acting makes the movie worth your time. Do not expect a great movie. But if you've got free time, then go for it. Everything was going fine until the second half. Then the movie got silly. One time watchable.
Bacheha-Ye aseman (1997)
This movie has one problem. It ends.
This is one of those movies you don't want to end. Maybe because I didn't get to see the faces of those kids in the end. It's a movie made with really simple setup and a few actors. Ali's face has it all. The innocence of a 9 year old, his love for his family, helplessness, fear.. It never felt like they were acting. You should definitely watch this.
