Good action choreography and great effort by the cast. That's it.
4 September 2023
RDX offers good action sequences. But the script fails to impress. Malayalam film industry is going through a hard phase. We have been provided with too many poor movies which lead us to a point where we get so excited or impressed over slightly above average movies.

Most of the scenes felt illogical because of the situations and the things they do. The main character's friends are not there. Their uncle who's a policeman is not there. It's always just the 3 leads fighting their own battles. The climax made no sense at all. I'm not gonna spoil anything.

The song was unnecessary. Pepe was so good and so was Shane. Neeraj did great with action scenes but lacks the mass aura.

It works better if you watch with an electrifying crowd.

Romancham (2023)
7/10
Light hearted comedy movie with a pinch of horror.
16 February 2023
Malayali audience have been longing for a comedy movie for quite some time. Romancham is here to quench that thirst. Although it's a fun watch, I have to say that it's a bit over-hyped. Not that I didn't enjoy the movie, but the rush and reviews are as if it belongs to the range of classics like Punjabi House or Pulival Kalyanam. It does not.

Coming to the movie, there is no star cast in this. Only three of the actors are familiar. But almost everyone did a fine job. Especially Arjun Ashokan. It is probably his career best performance. Soubin is back to his form. I loved the guy who controls the Ouija Board.

Sushin Shyam did a major role behind the success of the movie. Kudos to Jithu Madhavan for providing us a breath of fresh air.

Love Today (2022)

A decent but slightly cringey rom-com.
21 November 2022
The story was pretty obvious from the trailer. A couple has to exchange their phones for a day to get her father's approval. Things get intriguing once they start going through each other's phones.

It's entertaining most of the time. But the casting went wrong. The male lead tries to imitate Dhanush but doesn't have his charm. Ivana is beautiful but can't pull off emotional scenes. Yogi Babu is a good actor and his part was good most of the times but rhe ending felt too preachy.

Movie's cringe meter goes up every now and then and peaks during the climax. The boy planting the seed is shown as something so huge and it couldn't make the impact which the makers intended.

The story deserved better dialogues and better actors.

Very weak and mediocre movie
16 November 2022
We have reached a point at which people will watch anything that has the tag "Marvel" on it. I kept fighting to prevent myself from falling asleep during the first hour. It's incredibly slow and nothing interesting happens. Namor and Talokans could be terrifying but couldn't reach their full potential.

The forced jokes weren't funny at all. The action sequences doesn't look good. The background tracks/scores were too much or had no control. It stood seperate from what's happening.

I can understand why they should be grieving but grief isn't so good for a marvel movie. They didn't handle it well either. The wow factor is missing and the whole movie falls flat.

Underwhelming script and low budget film-making which left Siju Wilson's efforts in vain.
7 November 2022
There's severe lack of proper emotions in the movie. Although, the atrocities our ancestors had to suffer is enough to make our blood boil, it is safe to say my blood was cool throughout the movie. The characters are underdeveloped. Almost all the malayalam period dramas suffer due to the accent of old times. The dialogues will always feel artificial to hear after 2010.

In addition, the sets which reminds me of dramas, poor acting by most of the cast, the bad to nearly funny make up pulls the movie back.

Above all, it's the annoying background score which trumps all. I don't know who told the composer to create a track and keep it playing regardless of what happens in the movie. You can hear the same track during a conversation between some characters who aren't important and also when the protagonists fights the bad guy.

It's ironic how the movie tries to criticize the laws against lower caste women covering their body, but objectifies them at the same time. Yeah.. It's a Vinayan film, so that is not that surprising at all.

I just felt bad for Siju Wilson who put clearly put so much effort into this movie.

Not as bad as they said
4 November 2022
Brahmastra is an ambitious movie with solid film making but it was undermined by weak screenplay. It probably has the best CGI work in an Indian movie. But that couldn't overcome the weakness of average script. Almost all the frames look rich. There isn't much of compromise in production quality.

Coming to performances, it had a good cast. But the writing becomes the villain there too. The dialogues are so cheesy. It would've been fine if they released the movie 10 years ago, but in 2022, "Kya Ho Tum" just doesn't work.

The characters are poorly developed. There's no reason why Isha(Aaliya) and Shiva(Ranbir) falls in love. Love at first sight have been a thing but why Isha loved him still remains. She jumps into accepting supernatural things so easily without freaking out. She even goes on a very risky venture with a guy she hardly knows. Where did Shiva's friends go? God knows. The cameos barely makes an impact.

All that being said, it still has some good scenes and sequences to offer. The car chase near to the end of first half is pretty incredible. It's hand down one of the best car chases ever in an Indian film. Another great sequence is the climax. Climax is quite long but has really good visuals and background score. That makes it worth a watch. It's definitely not a disaster. It would've been a huge hit if the writing and character development were better.

Still holds up in 2022
22 October 2022
Gotta give it up for the makers of this film. And to create this in 1997 takes a lot of talent. Starship Troopers has its flaws. The acting is b grade and some dialogues are unintentionally corny. But as a whole, the film manages to entertain. The concept is pretty great for a 1997 movie.

They showed the progresses in future in a great way. Video calling, People sharing a shower regardless of gender without any sexual angle to it, black women as a leader.. And those scenes didn't felt forced like the woke movies they make these days.

The CGI still holds up except for the space scenes. Still, those aren't bad at all. Just that we have better space CGI now. But the bugs are just awesome. I think it's a combination of props and CGI instead of CGI alone. However, it's good.

Kantara (2022)
7/10
Rishab Shetty shines in this pretty solid and slightly overhyped movie.
22 October 2022
The opening and ending scene of Kantara is nothing like you've seen before. The way they wrote the mythological background was so good. But those are limited to the opening scene and climax. What happens in between is the overtold story of the rough hero who gets into trouble for his locality, his love interest and the conflict in the name of their place.

I can't believe they still write characters like Sreevalli and Leela. In the very first scene in which Leela is introduced, the hero straight up physically assaults her. There are other ways to write a romance, you know? No matter how progressed these movies become. They just can't get the female characters right.

The screenplay, direction cinematography, stunts, artwork and acting are pretty great. The screaming could've been dialed down a bit. The repeated screams might give you a headache. Rishab Shetty's performance in the climax is hands down one of the finest work I've ever seen in a Kannada movie. He handled something that could've gone very wrong really well.

It's theater material. Each person is different. This review is my opinion. Watch it in theaters and decide for yourself. Movies like these are made for theatres.

A breath of fresh air to the overtold revenge thriller story
17 October 2022
Thanks to writer Sameer Abdul and director Nisam Basheer for this. I was tired of the dark thrillers in Mollywood but you guys gave a new face to the genre.

It's a very slow paced movie and the first 20 minutes are confusing and the story gains shape from there on.

The cast gave their everything to make the movie work. What a comeback by the legendary Bindu Panicker. She plays one of the finest female character ever in Malayalam cinema. It's amazing how Mammootty still explores the actor in him and remains a superstar. Although, the superstar scenes could've been avoided. Also, Mammootty should've played an older guy. It was a bit weird to see him as the husband of a young woman.

The climax is a bit convoluted but still good.

P. S: It's a really slow movie, so if you're someone who's easily bored, you better avoid it. But you'll be missing one of the finest thriller in Mollywood.

8.5? Seriously?
15 October 2022
Pandemic has seriously affected Malayalam film industry and it's a cancer that should be removed.

I have a friend who's into film making and I remember him telling me an year ago that "We don't need any huge story or budget these days. All we got to do is get something simple and make it into a long script. A small budget of 80 lakhs to 2 crores. We can sell it to OTT for a profit. I get to be a film maker and the producer makes a profit." That's exactly what's happened with Paalthu Janwar.

There's no proper plot, no attempt to make the thin plot interesting with good writing. It's a disappointment. I feel sorry for whoever spend 150+ rupees to watch this.

Now don't get me wrong. The movie isn't that bad. There are some enjoyable scenes and Ambili Raavu song which was so soothing. But it's just not a good thing to sell content less movies to people. And a rating of 8.5? That's why the 1 star. Otherwise I would've given a 5.

Props to the VFX team btw. It didn't look like they used any VFX at all.

Wasted opportunity
8 October 2022
Ponniyin Selvan could've been India's GOT except for the VFX part. But it is not due to the convoluted screenplay, jerky camerawork and poor action choreography.

The lack of developments for character and conflicts are too obvious. If there were some conflict and challenge during the war scenes, it would've been more interesting. Instead, we get to see Aditha Karikalan just easily defeating his enemies.

Vikram doesn't have much screen time but leaves an impact with his performance. Karthi is charming as Vandiyathevan but the dialogues are poorly written. Jayam Ravi did the role with great control and didn't fall apart like I thought while watching the trailer.

I love Aiswarya but she's such a miscast for this role. First of all, her face isn't what it used to be. Botox is evident and her cheeks below her eyes doesn't move at all. There's so much make up on her face and it makes it difficult to think she's someone from such an ancient time. Same with Trisha minus the botox part.

They're both there for their beauty. Nandini should've been written better.

The political aspect was only good in one scene where Trisha walks into a meeting and proposes some marriages.

AR Rahman's score is great in some scenes and lame at some. Nandini has the best BGM and Kundavai has the worst. Songs aren't that great or suitable. Ponni Nadhi is so good though. Rest of the songs was unnecessary and felt out of place.

I liked the last ship scenes but then again, the action should've been better.

Really good first and second act. Poor thrid act.
3 October 2022
It is far from being perfect. But the movie is so good until they meet Yogi's(Irfan Khan) second ex. The acting by both the leads are really good. But Parvathy's performance went out of control due to the poor writing at the last portion of the movie.

We get only a glimpse to what makes Yogi so charming. That's what's missing from the movie. We don't get to see how strong is the love of Jaya and Yogi either. The fourth wall breaking was unnecessary and made me cringe during the car scene and cafe scene.

I don't understand why would someone from some other state would speak in Hindi while they're talking to themself.

However, despite these flaws, it is worth watching.

A forced action comedy
1 October 2022
Saakini Daakini is the story of two girls(more like women) who joins the police academy for completely different reasons and the incidents that happens during their training. Shalini is bold and carefree but has no idea what to do with her life while Daamini, who has some cleanliness disease, is there for her parents who are police officers.

The first half shows the rivalry between these two and tries to be funny by injecting comic actors. Some of the scenes were funny but most scenes felt forced or lame. It was like there's nothing serious happening in a police academy.

Things take a turn once they see a girl getting kidnapped infront of them. While I am all for "girl power", them fighting all those goons weren't convincing enough. Shaalini has a Kabaddi background and is powerful enough to fight off some goons. But Daamini isn't. It should've been set up in a better way.

However, both the actress deserves an applaud for their efforts during the action scenes.

The action choreography and cinematography looks solid but the background score was so bad during the action scenes. I don't understand the need for including the goddess Kali thing. It felt so cringey.

That being said, it's not a bad movie. It can be fun if you could ignore the bad scenes.

Boyhood (I) (2014)

Nothing interesting
30 September 2022
The only things good were the idea of shooting the actors over the years and the performances by the mother and father. There were some good moments too. Like when they move for the first time, Mason doesn't get to say goodbye, and the one where the guy comes and thanks Mason's mother for changing his life.

The movie is basically about the changes in the life of an ordinary boy from his age of 7 to 18. The problem is that it's just an average boy's life in which nothing interesting happens. We get to see him fight with his sister, her mom getting married again, his father getting married again, him graduating.. And that's it. Mason is not likeable. Neither is his sister or his parents or his step parents. He just mumbles all the time.

Most of the screen time is used for conversations which aren't that interesting. It has some good soundtrack though.

Poorly directed
25 September 2022
Good Luck Jerry is a remake of Tamil black comedy movie Kolamaavu Kokila. I didn't know that and only realized it after a while. Jahnvi is not as bad as most people say. She can act. But she need a good director to mentor her. I don't think she tries to understand the character and behave how the character would. The screenplay was also disappointing. It was difficult to understand what's happening in some scenes due to sudden change in the tone.

They could've dialed a couple of notches on the make up. I don't understand the need for making everyone look peachy. It feels like a constant reminder of the fact that I am watching a movie.

Kolamaau Kokila was enjoyable although not perfect. But inconsistency is the real villain in Good Luck Jerry.

Annoying Protagonist
19 September 2022
Siva Manasula Shakthi is fun to watch. But the way Siva is written is so bad. He is one of the most annoying characters I've ever seen. Shakthi falls for him because how annoying he is. Which was ridiculous to watch.

He is basically rude to everyone around him. Even tries to choke his sister. But what saves the movie is the funny scenes we get to see every now and then.

Songs are meh except for Oru Kal Oru Kannadi.

Another problem with the movie is the cinematography. The shaky camera which gives the feel of watching a TV show ruins the cinematic experience.

They could've wrote something better.

My second favorite Ayushman movie.
17 September 2022
Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is a masterclass in how to write a movie with a message without being too preachy. Kudos to Vaani Kapoor for playing such a character with grace. As we all know, she was always perceived as just another eye candy. But she proves it wrong.

Also, the struggles which both of the lead characters goes through are written brilliantly. They just didn't make the protagonist a good guy who can simply understand and accept everything. He's flawed but finds the strength to grow. And Maanvi's struggles can be understood by the viewer even though only a little part of it is shown.

I remember people saying it's a bad movie after watching a song which had so much of intimate scenes. Don't judge a movie based on a single song.

This movie has so much to offer and I found it better than most of Ayushman movies.

Sita Ramam (2022)
7/10
Heart touching love story
15 September 2022
Sita Ramam is quite beautiful despite its flaws. Every single instance in this movie doesn't work, but the ones that does work, works very well.

It has the old school charming romance between two strangers who meets through letters and fate. Best thing about Sita Ramam is the performances by both of the lead actors. Mrunal Thakur is not an addition to the list of pretty faces. She can act too. Dulquer is simply one of the most charming actor in the country. Such roles are his strong suit and he owns it.

The rest of the cast is pretty overdramatic or bad.

Almost all the emotional and romantic scenes are great, while the rest of the scenes felt meh. A huge credit in the movie's success goes to the music director who did a fine job with the songs and background score.

The forced religious harmony was unnecessary. Like the scene in which the guy from the embassy and the soldier says Jai Sriram and Allahu Akbar. Also, there is one guy who keeps saying "what a love story" so many times. It was a poor move by the film maker.

Rashmika's character had some potential but ended up as a wasted opportunity. Even with all these flaws, Sita Ramam manages to stay with you after you finish watching because of Dulquer and Mrunal.

House of the Dragon (2022– )

Not exciting (Edited after 6th episode)
7 September 2022
House of the Dragon is capable matching the technical quality of Game of Thrones. But sadly, it is not capable of providing the excitement which was there while watching GOT.

The first episode looked promising. But the show didn't get any better. The casting went so wrong. Neither the characters, nor the actors are likeable. They don't have the charm like the cast of GOT. Remember how we felt when Bran was pushed out the window and the credits started rolling in the very first episode of GOT? That feeling is missing from this. And the sudden jumps in time disrupts the flow of the story.

There's no one to root for. I hope it gets better.

Edit(E5): Finally! It gave me the GOT vibe. It's funny how Westeros has the most intense weddings. Alicent's entry was so good.

Edit(E6) : Ruined it again. The jumps in time are too much. The casting problem still remains. No one is likeable. They come too quickly, they dies too quickly. It's not an engaging story either. The conversations aren't intriguing either.

Entertaining despite some gimmicks
29 August 2022
I watched this movie for the second time after all these years. It still managed to be entertaining. Action sequences look old school, but still kind of okay. Overall story is pretty good. Salman Khan's goofy acting is the major attraction of the movie. And I don't even like the guy.

The songs are very enjoyable and crisp. Not a fan of the way the love story is written. The guy basically barges into her life and forces her to marry him. And she just straight up loves him. Could've used better writing but wasted the opportunity. Well, what else to expect from mainstream Indian movies.

Worst part is Arbaaz Khan's terrible acting. It was really sad to watch him make those faces. Sonu Sood did his job well.

It's not a great movie. But it's capable of entertaining you if you let it. I just felt nostalgic and decided to give it a watch again. It's not everyday you get to see a movie that can hold up after this long.

Sweet and simple.
28 August 2022
If you're a person who complains "the movie has no story" after watching movies with simple stories, Bheemante Vazhi is not for you. This is breath of fresh air, despite being not that good of a movie. It has some flaws like some scenes which serves no purpose. The writer and director might have meant something with it or not. However they failed to convey that.

Loved watching Suraj doing some comedy in a very long time. It's not like his old over the top funny roles. But a really grounded but funny kind. The final fight is a revelation. Probably something we've never seen before in Malayalam movies. All of the actors did a good job. Don't expect too much and you'll probably like this one.

Weirdly beautiful
27 August 2022
This movie is visually so damn beautiful. Every single frame is so beautiful to look at because of the actors, locations and overall composition. I have mixed feelings about the story but the screenplay was very engaging for me. It doesn't have much. It's about some people who are leading some very complicated and weird relationships. I wonder where everyone earns for a living. I think Vicky had some kind of job. But Cristina, Juan and Maria had no paying jobs.

Their performances are incredible and that's what makes movies like this watchable. I hear Penelopez won the oscar for her performance in this. I have to say it was really good despite having little screen time.

23 August 2022
I did not find it as bad as the angry fans think. Except for the "overcoming struggles in a snap" flaw, it was a decent watch. But the ending scene felt incredibly rushed and cheesy. What kind of villain was that?

Okay.. I'm changing the rating to 1. Spoiling your own show is fine. But spoiling Sopranos? Why?

Deserves a 7 but I'm just balancing for the angry reviews
19 August 2022
Darlings tries and does something different with the issue of domestic violence. It has good writing but do not expect a laugh riot. The actors compensate for the lag(if any) with their awesome performance.

Pretty sure you know at least some people who are abused by their spouse and take it without reacting, hoping that the spouse will change or stay together for their kids. If you don't, know that there are so many of them.

You can see some angry reviews here. This boycott bollywood has become so absurd. If you don't wanna watch, then don't. Please stop with the whining.

Now, about the movie, it's pretty good with some surprises at the end. Worth watching.

Don't expect a laugh riot.

Can't believe this episode has such high rating
18 August 2022
I don't get why people ship Summer and Seth. Summer actually grew as a person compared to how she was but Seth is simply one of the most selfish character of all time in TV history. All he cares about is himself. He wanted his parents to take Ryan in only because Ryan was the only friend he could have. Not because it was a kind thing to do. He 24*7 whines about Summer and doesn't care about other people's problems. He is creepy af. The writers are too lazy to bring in any interesting characters and they are also sending away a good character too.
