It's an exciting adventure! Could have been better.
9 August 2021
It's a fun movie but could have been a lot better. I think Studio 100 should have hired Dennis Bots or Bart Van Leemputten, they would knock it out of the park! I'm not really a fan of the choices this director always makes. There were a lot of pacing issues, color grading / green screen problems, and some of the acting needed to be stronger on the big screen. I'm a big Ghost Rockers + Studio 100 fan so i do really love the movie and the cast, but it really could have been much better..

My fave dutch show ever! It's hilarious. The last season is a bit off due to writing choices, but overall it's so much fun. I keep watching it over and over again :)

Such a beautiful dream! Don't believe the bad reviews.
7 January 2020
I've read lots of reviews of people saying that this is such a bad movie, but that's not true! Don't believe it. I'm happy I ignored them and went to see it for myself to decide..

It was such a joy!! Throughout the whole film I was smiling. I never liked the stage version and I'm a huge musical freak, so I had no idea what to expect and had my doubts about going to see this one. I now finally understand the story, thanks to this movie, and appreciate the music much more!!! The colors and sets were breathtaking, the music sounded like heaven, and the actors were brilliant. Love that they casted new actors too. The CGI really wasn't bad. People need to stop complaining and realize that these cats are magical cats. They aren't the cats we keep as pets. They are 'Jellicle Cats' and do not have to look like regular cats. Have people lost their imagination?? They didn't frighten me at all, as some people said. Amazing what they can do nowadays, especially with the fur and cat ears. Don't go watch it if Musicals aren't your thing. This is a 'Musical, Musical'.

Conclusion, just go see it for yourself. Everyone has its own taste. It's obviously fine if you don't like it, but this movie certainly doesn't deserve so many bad reviews and money loss. I've seen far worse movies than this. I suggest before seeing it, to look for the story online and use your imagination while watching it ;) Enjoy this beautiful dream!

Great beginning of the movie franchise!!
30 December 2019
'Plop & De Kabouterschat' is a Family film from 1999, made by Studio 100. In 2008 a completely 'remastered' version was released with new special effects and a completely new soundtrack. My review is about that version.

The film starts with the four gnome friends who are in Kabouter Plop's house, keeping a spring cleaning. During the cleaning, Klus suddenly finds a treasure map in the chimney. That treasure map was made by his Uncle Mop. The gnomes go straight away to find this treasure, because they are naturally very curious if there is anything of value in it. But the search is certainly not easy. The gnomes must pass 3 dangerous obstacles. First they have to cross a creepy bridge through a scary swamp, then they have to go through the forest of a thousand birds and finally they have to go through a cave that is about to collapse. If that is still not enough, two other gnomes also find the treasure map that Kabouter Klus had lost along the way. They are now also looking for the treasure..

I have watched this movie many times in my youth so I was really looking forward to reviewing it again. I have to say he was certainly not disappointing. He was just as good and as fun as I can remember. And of course the forests could be expanded a bit more so that there wasn't only a light screen in the background, but that was actually my only annoyance. I think children don't even think about that. I know I didn't when I was younger. The story is very simple and easy so you can keep follow it easily. The film is certainly not too scary for small children. The soundtrack is also really great, as always with Studio 100 films. They have ensured that the scene in the swamp, for example, was not made too scary, but just exciting for the children. Just when I thought the music was going to get a kind of horror sound, it became a little less. Very well done. The special effects were also very good. I found the 'giant human road' very beautiful and just seemed real, the flies at the swamp that were flying around and the moment the cave collapsed were also impressive. I only mention a few moments here. All special effects were beautiful, although I think the scene with the birds could have been better made a lot better with the budget that they had.

In short, I enjoyed this movie very much and I will definitely watch it more often. I recommend to everyone who loves Studio 100 or gnomes to watch this movie. No matter what age. Studio 100 has no age limit. If your heart continues to shine from this like mine, definitely go check this out!!

ZOOP in India (2006)
10/10
A Gem In Dutch Film History!!
30 December 2019
'Zoop In India' is a Dutch Family film from 2006. It is the sequel to 'Zoop In Afrika' from 2005.

The rangers are super happy because their fellow ranger Alwin from the series has returned from his trip to India. But he didn't just came back for nothing. Alwin needs their help, because elephants have mysteriously disappeared in India. The rangers decide to help and they immediately travel to India. Once there, everything immediately goes wrong. Ultimately it appears that the elephants have been abducted by ivory smugglers. The rangers decide that the best option is to split themselves into two groups. Then they not only have to brave the necessary dangers, but they also end up in a real Bollywood film.

After I watched 'Zoop In Afrika', I decided to watch this movie right after that. I don't say it often, but we must be proud of such a film in the Netherlands! The action scenes from this film are of American level. I was on the edge of my seat all the time. Especially with the scene that the bus crashes and when Taffie hangs on the bridge. Why has there never been so much attention for this film? The music is beautiful again, but also the locations and the colors. Johan Nijenhuis told at the premiere that it was really hell to film in India. The people there did not comply with agreements, etc. If you hear something like that, you really start to doubt whether they have been able to make something good out of it. This surprised me enormously, because wow! What a movie. I can't say it often enough. Unfortunately, there are a few sloppy mistakes in it, such as the microphone and sound man, who you can easily spot a lot and are sometimes on screen for a long time. Do not understand how the editors did not see this. Or the many people on location themselves. You can clearly see that the actors have gotten even better at acting after Zoop In Afrika. I don't want to call anyone out, because everyone from the cast really played fantastic, but Nicolette van Dam as Bionda and Monique Van Der Werff as Taffie really sparkled off the screen.

In short, Zoop In India is a gem in Dutch Film History and we should talk a lot more about it! This is what we can make in the Netherlands, but unfortunately we are currently only making Romantic Comedies here.. Go see this if you like animals, action or adventure. You will certainly not be disappointed!!

Child's Play (2019)
2/10
What was this? :o
30 December 2019
Child's Play is a Horror movie from 2019 directed by Lars Klevberg. It is a remake of the classic from 1988.

When I heard that MGM was planning to make a Remake of one of my favorite horror movies of all time, I became a bit skeptical. How could they ever surpass the old film? The generation from the past has of course changed and that is certainly not a good thing. Later the creator and writer of the Chucky Franchise 'Don Manchini' revealed on Twitter that he had nothing to do with the new film and does not agree with it. This gave me a pretty bad taste in my mouth already. Has MGM literally stolen an idea behind someone's back without consulting? These are Don Mancini's characters. The story comes from his mind and heart. How dare they make money out of it? I don't like to say it, but trust me .. this film is literally a cash grab.

In the beginning we see how employees are treated badly in a toy factory in Vietnam. One man has enough of that and decides to take revenge. He changes a number of things in the 'Buddi / Chucky' chip and then puts the doll back in a box. A whole load of toys is then put on a truck and taken to the stores. Andy's mother Karen works in one of the stores where they sell those dolls. A woman returns her purchased doll because he shows strange behavior. For example, he gets very red eyes out of nothing. Karen decides to spoil her son and takes the doll home as a gift, otherwise the doll would be destroyed anyway. The boy is surprisingly happy with it, since he has no friends. Later the doll starts picking up different sentences and manners of people and starts killing. If he can't be Andy's friend, nobody can.

Instead of a psychopathic killer in the doll, this time it is a technical flaw in the chip. Well, a flaw? That man in the factory literally put it all on it himself. It was a nice idea, but I noticed throughout the film that the makers themselves no longer knew which of the two it was again. The doll suddenly knew everything, could think, jump into cars, also 'light' other dolls, put tape on people's mouths, tie people up, and so on. I understand that the doll picks up things, but of course he can't know all of this. No one has done this and it does not seem to me that this was described in his program. I also find it a pity, without giving away too many spoilers, the scene with the cat. Every normal person would have immediately throwed the doll away and not just give him a cuddly 'it is not allowed' lesson as if it was a child of 4 who secretly took a cookie from the cookie jar. The whole scene was not pleasant to watch. And that Andy later .. SPOILERS !!! throws the cat in the garbage. That really beats it all. Let's just pretend that's normal and that that is how it should be done. Super good example! -_- The real outstanders of the actors from the film were Gabriel Bateman as Andy, Brian Tyree Henry as Mike Norris & Carlease Burke as Doreen. Very well played! Especially Gabriel Bateman at such a young age. Just a pity that his role is written so 'unlikeable' ..

In short, it is a nice idea, but a poor execution. If they wanted to do it, they would have been better of doing it a lot differently. You could have done so much with this story. This proves once again that you have to keep your hands off from classics. Especially if the creator himself wants nothing to do with it and if the original franchise is still running. I am soon going to watch the old films again to wash away this bad version. What a complete nonsense this was.. So unnecessary ..

Ghostface (2018)
5/10
Good Story
14 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I just watched the fanfilm and i have to admit, i'm kind of dissappointed. This movie could have been a lot better due to many reasons. But the main reason is the horrible acting. Literally no one could act. This would be so much better with a different cast. I did like the movements of Ghostface and i was impressed by his new voice and mask with still staying true to the franchise. I really think that the story was well written. This could really work out in a full lenght movie with some more action. Yes, I kind of missed the action. I expected a little bit more than just 1 kill. I also didn't really feel the scene's. Sometimes the camera just stood there while i think that if the camera moved some more with the characters, it would feel much better and more natural. But overall, this movie is a genius and fun idea. If you don't mind the expressionless acting which looks like something from a high school play, you really have to watch this. Or simply if you are a fan of the Scream Franchise ;-)
