Tim Kang - period!
24 September 2020
I came here for 1 reason and only 1. Tim Kang is an insanely talented actor. Mfa from Harvard and I really miss Kimball Cho. Now how hard would it be to make a Kimball Cho show??! Other than that my expectations for this remake were in the negative digit range of the rating scale. Mostly because the lack of talent in Hollywood is overwhelming. I guess the days of classes, University education in the arts, Tish must be going out of business, meisner,method,checkov.... All seem like techniques of the past. I knew this guy playing Magnum was awkward to say the least because I remember him from being thrown in the middle of true talent in the movie Bad Mom's... standing there bizarrely across from Mila Kunis will make anyone look like a tool cast only because they need a dumb hotguy. But if acting is truly about authenticity... Current Hollywood is authentically dumb, untrained, mindless, uneducated, dull, unartistic, uninterested, unemotional, uncreative, awkward, unrelatable and nearly unbelievable as humans. Actually if someone told me the blonde girl playing Higgins was really an AI robot they were testing out to replace human actress for tv shows I would believe it and THAT would make this show impressive! Generally speaking she tries to be sporty and kick a soccer ball or run and jump in a chase, and she looks like she doesn't quite fit into her body correctly.... Not quite sure what is going on there. And the main character, as mentioned in other reviews is literally just regurgitating words he memorized with no character infused or to lend to the scene. Like I said I think sadly it's not so much tragic acting but a lack of experience, lack of emotions and authenticly empty humans. Even this guy's narration is so hideous it makes me laugh - as if it is just so bad in an attempt to be ironic. It is exactly like listening to a 3rd grader reading aloud for the first time.... Short of actually reading the words "long pause" (like Joey in Friends) the occasional narration is hysterical. I keep watching cause talent like Tim Kang -ridiculously underrated and ridiculously out of place among this cast is hard to find. If I can soldier through the rest of season 1 I'll be watching the mentalist for like the 9th time this year.

Nancy Drew (2019–2023)
2/10
Totally missed the mark
26 May 2020
Seriously CW?!? You should have NEVER canceled Veronica Mars in the first place! This Nancy Drew is a sad and pathetically weak attempt to plagiarize Rob Thomas' format and get away with it by using the original teen noir book series name of Nancy Drew. I read every Nancy Drew mystery book as a kid and this show does not have the same "feel" of eerie or "sinister" mystery. Combined with incredibly weak, almost annoying support characters (and bad writing) this 2019 version totally missed the point of the novels, yet the biggest disappointment is that the main character has zero redeeming qualities, skills, talents, or intelligence. A close second to the original Nancy Drew mystery books (for anyone who loved the series) is Veronica Mars - the protagonist is an exemplary strong female character- educated, incredibly witty, clever, and independent. Seems like in this particular "new version" of Nancy Drew, "Nancy" should have stuck to her plans for college! PS - seasons 1-4 of Veronica Mars are on Hulu :-)

No idea why this didn't make it!!
16 October 2019
I just found this show on Hulu. It's so amazing and fun! The relationship between the roommates stays interesting and ever changing. I've always liked Kristin Ritters acting since Veronica Mars. But what makes the show is that this is James Van der Beek's best role ever. I'm so sad this was only 2 seasons

Weak attempt to be edgy and intelligent
17 May 2019
I am sorry but I have no idea what the high ranking reviewers see in this. Maybe it's just not relevant or relatable for me. I found the movie to be a pompous attempt to be smart and edgy - but was just a major bore of 2 people sitting at a table pontificating about nothing. I think my heart stopped half way through because my brain was no longer sending messages to the rest of my organs reminding them to function. ( The only thing that makes it at all engaging is Lea Thompson is a great actress).

worth seeing multiple times! *spoilers included in review*

Warning: Spoilers
This movie is basically about the current ADHD drugs - not sure if anyone realizes that or cares to admit it out loud. Pretty much describes an embellished version of the affects of Adderall/Vyvanse/Ritalin - including the side effects, withdrawals and aftermath (albeit not too far off) . The happy ending in the movie is super cool because I don't know anyone who weaned a prescribed pharmaceutical and ended up smarter than his/her pre-induction or peek performance state of the enhancer
