Avatar: The Last Airbender: Zuko Alone (2006)
Season 2, Episode 7
10/10
The best episode since pilot
8 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was a very welcome break from our main protagonists. It explores the sentimental backstory of Zuko and marks the true beginning of his growth as a character. It fills in the story of the Fire Lord and the royal family which were not previously explored in depth.

The ambience of the episode perfectly reflected Zuko's situation - lonely, abandoned, and traumatized. The flashbacks paint the trauma in Zuko's childhood, which finally explain his personality in past episodes. This episode wraps up his character arc since the pilot, and begins to show how the character of Zuko will change over the next episodes.

This episode has made Zuko, by far, one of my favorite antagonists of all time.

Not as bad as others lead you to believe
7 May 2021
This episode does not contribute much to Aang's growth in strength and power, but is in no way a bad episode.

The Avatar has long been hinted to "bring balance to the world", and we've seen times-a-plenty that Aang does it by taking part in the war - This is the most intuitive solution you'd expect of a cartoon. However, this episode shows that there is more to the character of Avatar other than pure power - it's spontaneous wits and problem-solving abilities - aspects of the character that weren't highlighted until this very episode.

The conflict between the two tribes, depicted humorously and light-heartedly, is a direct reflection of how ridiculous tribal prejudices and rivalries are - ones that even modern humans are guilty of committing. Partial judgement is internalized within a community, and as the boundary thickens, they become more polarized, and this just feeds to the perpetual vicious cycle.

An interesting allegory is that the ancestors of the Zhang and the Gan Jin have nigh-identical names - they are birds of a feather, separated by misunderstanding and polarized in tribes. Sounds familiar? That's because it's homo sapiens.

Skip it if you will. But this is a solid and entertaining episode that I am glad I didn't skip over.

The ending compensated for the roguish writing of the episode
20 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The episode, like many others, had its ups and downs. Only for this one, I felt weirded out enough to write a review about it.

The title of the episode is very accurate. The outbursts came left, right and centre whether you like them to or not, and even whether they were necessary or not. For a moment, I got teleported back to the time I was watching Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, because this episode was on par with it, only that Zoey doesn't have a mental illness that we know of. The point I'm getting at is that the outbursts and the events in this episode weren't naturally executed.

We've all reached rock bottom at one point in our lives, and any normal person wouldn't just lash out at everyone at a close proximity. Rebecca Bunch might have. But not Zoey. At least, not the Zoey we are led to believe we know about. Mo and the final scene really saved the episode.

Overall, the structure of the episode felt slightly confused, but owes its rating to a fortunate saving grace.

It's not perfect, but I love it! A feel-good comedy with good writing
7 April 2020
Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist is a feel-good comedy that will leave you feeling content. The show is not for the hypercritical or the cynical, but will leave any other viewer feeling positive.

It is easy to tell when a writer has sketched out the entire structure of the story and when he/she has not. In the case of this show, it is clear the writer had a clear image of what the show was going to be and how different dynamics should interact, preventing the series from becoming confused.

The story is not perfect in the sense that there isn't much of a moral implication. There are sometimes noticeable feats that Zoey performs without the need of her powers, but the series does periodically incite the thought "so what can I learn from this?" Superpowers don't occur to anyone in real life, and we all love performng good deeds, so what mindblowing takeaway should the audience get? That is food for thought.

Otherwise, the show is well-written and has outstanding choreography. Reminds me of Craxy Ex-Girlfriend, Mamma Mia and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. There are also emotional scenes that I believe are well-executed.

The Walking Dead: Look at the Flowers (2020)
Season 10, Episode 14
3/10
Another weird filler episode
30 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Another classic filler that you'd expect of the Walking Dead. Hallucination - check. Hallucination of a person you've killed - check. Getting stuck under debris - check. Getting stuck under debris for hallucinations to speak - check. Hallucination disappears and leaves character unchanged and uninspired - double check.

Completely predictable revelation of Beta's past, one which most viewers don't care and one that has little to no significance on the plot.

Some good shots and a glimpse of a new character aren't enough to balance out just how dull this episode was, plot-wise.

An unsuccessful take on mental illness
30 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As much as I liked the idea of Farkle being the center of an episode and dealing with mental illesses, the production team handled this episode poorly. The episode revolved around general exposition and self-diagnosis, which is a poor message delivered to tweens and teens.

Bittersweet at times, corny at times, romantic at times, cliche at times.
17 September 2019
Boy oh boy did this movie give me mixed feelings. I've been a sucker for these romantic dramas ever since I watched The Fault in Our Stars. Despite having their similtarites at times, ultimately they part ways in story-telling and artistic style. Generally, it's a good movie. It made me cry at intended timestamps, but must I be absolutely frank, I could have held back those tears. I had high hopes for a supposed tear-jerker and it somewhat delivered, so why not go along with it.

I can't deny that I ship Stellar and Will, but it did initially seem a bit cliche, circumferential and rushed. Very often these movies fall into the same pitfall of not being able to really, in a way, impressively prove that the lovers are the perfect couple, and I believe this movie has one foot in that pitfall right before the other punctually drags it out.

Is it a tear-jerker? Well yes, but no. There are beautiful moments, as well as ones that really try to squeeze your eyes dry, but perhaps I have matured way too soon, it just didn't give that stab-in-the-gut feeling, only the this-is-pretty-sad-so-I-shed-some-tears-because-why-not?.

Wow, I've slammed this movie harder than I'd envisioned. Don't get me wrong, it's a good movie, but t/here are undoubtedly expectations unfulfilled and gaps unfilled. Overall, an 8/10.

Perfect Choreography; Splendid Songs; Mediocre Plot
28 October 2018
What the movie lacks in depth is compensated with the choreography and music. After all, this is a musical, and it is usually too much to ask for an Oscar-worthy plot in musicals. The movie disappointingly only scratched the surface of what it could have been. I'm not suggesting I have better ideas for the movie, but it generally felt somewhat empty in the story after watching it.

Despite its so-so plot, it lives up to its rating, and genre. I have yet to find one single song that I do not absolutely extol, that being said I also praise their choreography (especially Rewrite the Stars), it was just so imaginatively amalgamated and executed that it is enough to ameliorate its lack of depth in plot and more.

Overall, whether you are looking for a good plot or not, this is not a movie to be skipped - in terms of songs, it is arguably the best musical ever.

-EDIT: Added one star. I have rewatched a lot of footage, and noticed that the more you rewatch it carefully, the more you find this movie intriguing with the hidden details and easter eggs.

Great music, fantastic acting; decent plot
27 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I went into the cinema with pretty high expectations, having seen such phenomenal ratings for the movie. All throughout, it didn't go as I'd expected so I was just ever-so-slightly disappointed in the plot arena. However, it turned out to be okay. It wasn't a perfect, Oscar-worthy plot, nonetheless.

The biggest problems I have with this movie are two things - jumps and focus.

Jumps is the editing and time jumps in the movie. The ratio of Jackson and Ally's story was far less than the final scenes mainly revolving around Jackson, and you could very easily tell the movie was rushed, and they were forced to cut out a lot. The focus was not too clear. Whether the story revolved around the couple, or Ally, or Jackson, it was just too ambiguous to figure out. It began with Jackson, and then moved on to them as a couple, and Ally's part of the story - both were rushed in order to continue focusing on Jackson, on which note the story ended. The ending was sad, at first, and then it just felt empty. I imagine the production team just went "We need a plot twist, and the audience should be expecting Jackson's lost of hearing in the end, so we need something that is unexpected. Let's kill him off."

All in all, the acting and songs were enough to compensate for the points deducted for the mediocre plot.

Family Guy: Brian's Play (2013)

First Ever Time I Cried During Family Guy
29 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
It was a pretty decent episode overall, but the one scene that stood out most was when Brian and Stewie had the deep conversation. It was not cry-out-loud sad, but it still makes you think about the relationship between Stewie and Brian. How Stewie would eventually grow up and Brian would be long dead by then. For some reason, it was actually tear-jerking to acknowledge that.

Worst X-Men movie so far.

One word - boring. Doesn't contribute much to the entire X-Men storyline. They could've summarized the entire story with "The Wolverine is back".

Not laugh-out-loud funny, but it gives a good giggle.
27 March 2018
CollegeHumor's videos are humorous, yet not LOL funny. It's entertaining and definitely a lot of fresh ideas. Really not outstanding funny (only 2 videos so far have really had me laughing), but it gives you that positive mood and it attracts you into watching more and more skits. The actors are actually really good. Little flaws here and there, but overall, a great comedy Youtube Channel

A Fantastic Episode. Filled with Excitement and Plot Twists. An Emotion Roller Coaster.
3 March 2018
First of all, I just want to say that Dove Cameron did an amazing job at making us all want to kill her character. The episode started off light and breezy, then started to tense up and ended up a disaster, alike literally every other AoS episodes, leaving many wonders and possibilities that could lead to the events of the 100th episode (return of many past and deceased characters). As for the emotion roller coaster part, the episode was seriously intense, (some even being cringey *detailed left out as to not spoil anything*). THAT specific moment made me slam my fist hard on my table and literally yell NOOOOOOO. Overall, a very well-done episode. Can't wait to see the big 100 episode next week.

One of the Best Sci-fi Movies Yet
27 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is not for the faint-hearted, because it will literally "thrill" you to death. For once, the antagonists of the franchise actually have a good intention, and ultimately, you begin to wonder if the rebellion was a correct movement. What is unexpected is that the end happens so quickly. You'd think they would plan everything precisely and coordinate an attack, but no, what you thought to be one of the missions inside the "last city" led all the way to the final battle, which is probably why the movie is so thrilling. Also, it is one of very few movies that did not drift too far from the books, which I must say is very rare and amazing. In simpler words, definitely something you should see in your cinema.

Pure comedy musical. View it as a farewell instead of a usual movie.
18 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
As the critics claimed, the final installment of the Pitch Perfect series was very predictable, scattered all over the places and inconsistent. However, if you viewed it like I did - as a farewell instead of a usual movie - it's really good. Everything was coming to an end and the end was, rather emotionally, not enough to make people sob, but still it was a sad farewell. The music was... not bad. I loved most of the music, but some were kind of scattered and confusing, ie the final song. With the heavy instruments in the background, I could hardly hear the Bellas. But all in all, it was a great movie and will definitely add to my collection of Pitch Perfect DVDs

Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013–2021)
10/10
Delightful show, No Laugh Tracks, Golden Content
3 January 2018
Brooklyn Nine-Nine is definitely one of my favorite ever sitcom. It's a show of pure comedy with humorous stories that are naturally delivered by the lovely actors and actresses, but also with a consistent storyline which a lot of sitcoms lack. The other thing I've noticed which makes this show better is the exclusion of laugh tracks. Although, laugh tracks do, to a certain extent, seem to make shows more hilarious and to a point where even if you don't understand a joke, you'd laugh. But no, this show has no cheats like that and amuses viewers with original content. The show also does not rely on one-liners or simple jokes, and instead, make use of the characters' personalities and actions to entertain viewers, which is pretty smart. Some might think that entertainment with personalities do not last as they stay the same and eventually people would get tired of them. However, with the ongoing characters development, their personalities and stories are often changing, which makes the show so fresh all the time.

The Big Bang Theory (2007–2019)

Amazing Sitcom (1-5) Not-as-good-but-still-fine (6 and onward) Great Show to Binge
29 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
(Heavy spoilers for seasons 1-10) As the title suggests, seasons 1 to 5 were spectacular. Most characters were still young and looking for love in a childish way, while living their nerdy lives. Sheldon & Leonard's relationship with Penny is worth-mentioning - they were such good friends and Leonard even had a couple dates with Penny, which was really cute.

I've been binge-ing this show for a couple months now, all the way from season 1 through 11, although I've never lost interest, the show was very obviously going downhills from season 6 and forth. Reasons behind that I've noticed are the amount of drama and the characters-growth-in-maturity. Elaborating the former, the amount of drama created by the writers is just too much. For instance, the birth of Halley was sweet at first, but then it turned out to be a drag to the show. Bernadette and Howard, taking on the parents' roles, although often mischievous, are much less humorous ever since the birth of their daughter, and the funny bits are usually forced by Raj and Stuart, who have also grown a lot in terms of maturity, and are, of course, less humorous also.

Given that, the latter should be rather obvious. Although Sheldon doesn't seem to have that big of a change, his friends unfortunately do. Maturing isn't bad on its own, but if you're going to make them less funny, then hell naw'. Let's take some in the Social Group as examples. Penny, in the first couple of seasons, was kind of like a post-college sl**ty girl who was messed around by reality. With a never-ending list of boyfriends, she eventually settled with Leonard, to whom she was married to. A season after the said event, she began to develop a mature and boring personality, which no longer includes the sarcastic and who-gives-a-**** traits of her past. Amy, who has been a steady regular character for quite a while, used to be that isolated weirdo who had tried desperately to be part of the Social Group / the girls' group. Now that she's "officially" part of the said groups, she's lost that desperately funny trait of hers and also gradually becoming unfunny.

For some reason, this review has become more negative than I'd planned. Given that, I will not stop watching and caring for the Big Bang Theory since it's still one of my favorite shows. Despite it going downhill, which I hope is stopping soon, Big Bang Theory is still a wonderful sitcom to laugh at and watch, especially in times of stress.

Thank you for reading this essay-length review of mine, and have a very Sheldon day.

The 5th Wave (2016)
9/10
Not a Bad Movie - Interesting and Exciting
27 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Being so-called - just another teen apocalyptic science fiction, it's actually not too terrible. The idea of the movie is pretty interesting, though the plot twist was rather predictable, it was still very fun to watch. Almost everything in the 5th Wave is expandable and thus a sequel is definitely wanted and possible, as long as it doesn't drift too far from the books - like Allegiant - it'll definitely be big-screen-worthy. Although I have to admit, the main characters aren't very skilled at acting. Cassie was fine, but Sam - given his age- was terrible at acting, which made the scenes with him rather cringey. The ending was pretty anti-climatic, but the story itself was so thrilling that if something wrong happens in the end, I would really have a heart attack.
