Unparallelled masterpiece
9 December 2023
Like many of the reviewers here, I saw this as a child on German television, even though I'm Dutch and it made an unforgettable impression on me, I dreamed about it and was smitten of course by Irene Papas.

Bekim Fehmiu as Ulyssis is fantastic and complely convincing as the hero and yes, it is slow, very basic special effects, but it is magical all the same.

The story of Homer is closely followed, though for budgetary reasons they did not film the Scylla & Charibdes story and were forced to limit Ulyssis fleet from the original 12 to just one, but it does not detract at all.

But I loved the mystery, the gods, it was all so magical and felt like I transported into the past.

You can now watch it on youtube in Italian without subtitles but also a French version with English subtitles. Go to the channel of Francheval and you can find it.

I looked for a dvd for more than 20 years and when I finally found it, in original Italian without subtitles and I don't speak nor understand the least bit of that beautiful language, I had some luck it also included a German version that I could follow.

I remember putting it on for the first time after more than two decades and I hear the opening musical thema and the hairs on my arm immediately stand on end and it all comes flooding back to me, the memories.

There's few works of art that give me such a strong reaction.

This masterpiece should be restored, audio remastered and finally receive its due on a world scale that it deserves.

If I had the money I would pay for it myself.

Artistic bravery
13 April 2021
Let's start on a positive note, the two leads are fantastic and very convincing.

The concept for the show is brilliant, fresh and original.

So?

Well, Disney did not have the balls to stick with it and starting episode 4 went back and reverted the show to a well known mcu formula.

I guess it is what Marvel fans wanted, I mean all those that failed to see that the first 3 episodes actually were the best, so Disney gave the majority what they wanted I guess, but artistic bravery and integrity sometimes means NOT giving the fans what they expect.

A tragically missed opportunity, so gave 5 out of 5 stars for the first few episodes and everything after zero, as it was a cop out.

It's not that I mind the concept, but the way they got from A to B was way too fast and unsubtle. It would have been way better to actually play it like a sitcom and let the uneasyness creep in slowly at certain points and actually make a more interesting explanation.

Ah well, I'm obviously a minority, but still, kudos to the actors, tremendous job all around, kept me watching.
