Ted Lasso (2020)
Sugar coathed with extra cream on top
Have you ever had a piece of pie that looked really good and you take a first bite and you think 'okay, a bit sweet, but let's go with it' and then three bites later you put it away because the thing appears so loaded with sugar you're affraid your teeth will shatter? Ted Lasso kind of reminds me of The Good Place because both are so heartwarmingly innocent and light. However, while the jokes in The Good Place are silly, but have a cleverness to it, Ted Lasso is the Silly Family going to Disneyland in a hot air balloon packed with ice cream and candy. It's silly just to be silly, without any sort of point. I was unfamiliar with Sudeikis and was hoping for a show like Entourage, but then instead of Hollywood, they'd be making fun of the soccer world. There's plenty to be made fun at there, no doubt. Unfortunately, while Entourage still makes you believe that this is kind of how it could go in reality, Ted Lasso makes it clear from the beginning that it's just all sillyness, and everything should be taken with a ton of salt. If you're okay with that premise, then it might be for you, but for me it's like that pie: to much sugar.
Outer Banks: My Druthers (2021)
Season 2 seems to be improving a little
Although the show keeps it's utter unrealistic moments, like the mee maw scene. I never saw anyone got cured from dementia that fast - or at all for that matter.
Outer Banks (2020)
Garbage writing, but still strangely enjoyable
I gave it a 7 initially, but downgraded it to 6 after the second season. Which is still much more than it deserves actually.
The whole script could have been written on the back of an anvil. Would have definitely been a LOT better if the writers made the tinest bit of effort to make things even remotely plausible.
Still, watching this close group of carefree comrades land from one adventure into the next is strangely entertaining.
Vikings (2013)
Thank the gods I finished it!
Somehow I've managed to pull trough the last 3 seasons. Let me summarize 90-something episodes of Vikings for you:
- Let's attack England!
- Let's take back Kattegat!
- Let's attack England again!
- Let's take back Kattegat!
- Let's attack Paris!
- Let's attack Paris again!
- Let's attack England again!
- Let's find a remote island and kill each other!
- Let's attack Kattegat!
- Let's find another remote island and kill each other again!
- Let's attack England again!
- Let's find another remote island and kill each other again!
Homeland: Two Hats (2012)
Illogical plot choice
In this episode Abu Nasir plans on hitting the homecoming of US soldiers and taking out the vice president at the same time. This makes no sense at all. The only logical action for Nasir would be to bet on the VP becoming president and Brody the new VP and thén kill the president. He'd make a much larger score and Brody would become president. The perfect scenario.
Of course this wouldn't fit the series, so I get that they let something else happen. But the homecoming attack is a to obvious plot flaw in my opinion, unworthy of Homeland.
Legion (2017)
Season 1 went far, season 2 went over the hill
If you find season 1 interesting overall, but can do without most of the crazyness. Better stop watching now cuz season 2 goes full on cuckoo.
Russian Doll (2019)
If you didn't like Black Mirror you'll won't like Russian Doll
Okay I've been through 6 episodes, so I can honestly say I gave it good shot.
For me Russian Doll feels like Black Mirror. Both are over-hyped, supposedly brilliant shows, but I'm just not getting them.
What else they have in common is that they are prentenious, the characters are unlikable or even flat out annoying and there's a lot of overacting. Not to mention that in both shows people behave irrationally and make unlogical choices given the situations they are put in.
How these shows get such outstanding reviews both from critics as regular viewers is well beyond me.
Black Mirror (2011)
If you don't like Black Mirror, rest assured: it's not you!
Because most of my friends were very positive about it and it has such a high rating, I really wanted to give this show an honest shot. I watched 5 episodes (1,3,4,5 and 6), but I really can't comprehend why so many people (including my friends) think so highly it.
Call me critical, but I feel that if a show is sciency (projecting a view of the future and the technical advancements it holds), psychological (predicts how people behave in this futuristic setting) AND has a clear moral message, this projection should be VERY believably for the show to be any good. And in all the episodes I've seen, it utterly fails in this.
In all episodes I've seen:
- the point the writers try to make is already obvious within 10 minutes, after which you are hammered to death with it.
- to make this point as bluntly as possible, shortcuts are taken and story is sacrifised whenever needed.
- the people act completely inhumane without any common sense.
- the overacting is just painfull to watch. Again, probably emphasize the message the episode wants to convey. Take episode 2 for instance, with the woman who cries the entire episode.
- there is just too little logic and sense of reality.
It's like all the writers care about is getting their message across and shocking people with it, instead of coming up with a decent, believable story. I'd give the third episode a 6 the other ones 3's or 4's.
So, don't feel like there's something wrong with you if you don't like this show. There's more of us out there, really ;)
PS: don't click on 'this review wasn't helpful' just because you like the show and can't stand negative comments about it please. Thank you.
The Last Kingdom: Episode #3.2 (2018)
Déjà vu?
Repetitive plots between seasons is not something uncommon in TV shows. This episode, yet again the writers make Uthred do something to upset Alfred (yes, again even by killing a monk). And in turn, Alfred - again -demands that Uthred is penalized by swearing an oath. This time fortunately, things turn out other than expected. Uthred, like me, is tired of this all to familiar road and finally breaks with Alfred.
I am not sure if it is lack of creativity or just fear to stray from te path, but it strikes me that so often is chosen to stay on familiar grounds. And what strikes me even more is that a lot of people actually enjoy being served the same dish over and over again.
Let's just pray that this time Uthred has broken with Alfred permanently. If they somehow get back together again, I like to refer to what I've written above.
