I'm embarrassed to have friends who liked this
17 October 2022
Couldn't sleep so I watched this at 4am.

I expected a bad story, but I didn't expect the bad acting and the bad score. Yes the soundtrack is good, but the way they put the songs in the movie is weird and forced.

I can't emphasize enough how bad the acting is. What is going on with Jamie's accent? It's all over the place in this movie! Everyone really just phoned it in. There's no chemistry between any of the characters. They all knew they'd make a bunch of money no matter what because of the popularity of the books (which I haven't read and have zero interest in).

There's basically zero dialogue in the movie. Christian and Ana don't actually ever talk about anything. The only conversation they have is about the "contract" and what he wants. That's it. And that apparently makes more a sexy love story?

As for the sex scenes, really tame. I don't see what the hype was about. The people who wrote this did zero research into BDSM and have no idea what it's supposed to be and what it looks like. The lack of chemistry, the fact the writers and director have no idea what BDSM is, plus how they scored the scenes just all made the sex scenes awkward and boring more than anything else.

The worst thing about this movie is how they just casually mention pedophilia. A grown woman began an affair with a 15 year old boy? Jamie says he liked being submissive because it set him free from "responsibility and making decisions" really? At 15? That makes no sense.

Oh and he's still friends with the woman who raped him.

And our society was OK with this because I never heard any outcry when the movie came out.

I was hoping to fall asleep to this but I just got angry at how bad this movie is and stayed up to criticize all of it.

don't be lured by the cast
23 December 2021
The only reason why I pressed play was because of Gary Oldman and Emily Mortimer. Wow was that a mistake.

The dialogue, the acting, the editing, the cinematography, the music, every about this is bad. I wonder if what we see on screen was what was in the script as I have a hard time believing Gary Oldman and Emily Mortimer would read this and think "oh, I should do this movie!".

The attempts at scares are absurd and cheap. They're obvious and because of the lack of suspense, they fail miserably.

There are so many ridiculous scenes and so much dialogue that doesn't make sense it's almost comical.

There are scary movies that are so bad they're funny, but this one is so bad you can't even laugh at how bad it is, you can just regret watching it. I actually find it upsetting that money was spent making this. Imagine what that money could have been spent on instead.

Every woman has feared this
4 December 2021
I feel I can say pretty much all women have come across that man that just creeps you out. The car that slowly follows you, or when walking home, you feel the man walking a few feet behind you is following you. There's this constant feeling of "I'm in danger" and you can't really explain it.

The first half of the movie was that. Even though he doesn't actually do anything wrong, or bad, or scary, you feel like there's danger lurking, that this person is not a safe person to be around. When we feel that sense of potential danger, what happens in this movie is what we fear. And this is a real, legitimate, fear as this sort of thing actually happens regularly.

What I loved about this movie is that there were no real "well that was stupid of her" moments. The things she said and did, especially in regards to a phone, I thought was smart and rather realistic.

This movie does a good job portraying what most women fear on a regular basis.

don't even watch it to see how bad it is
27 November 2021
This is definitely the worst movie I've ever seen. What makes it worse, it they basically replay the entire movie towards the end of it. As though we needed an explanation to know what was happening. It's not a mind bender, there's nothing surprising, other than how bad this is. I don't understand how an actor, or a director reads the script and says "yes, this is a project I'll take on!" There's no story, no character development, no arch, no climax. The acting is horrible, as is the directing, the editing, the visuals, everything about this sucks. It wouldn't even pass as a comedy, you know, how when a scary movie is bad, but you can still laugh at it? No. One thing it does do though, is if you're a screenwriter or would like to be one, it gives you hope. If something this bad can get made, and the put on Netflix, then you'll for sure be able to get yours done and distributed as well.

Teaching respect
1 October 2020
As an animal behaviour student, I LOVED the respect he showed to the octopus, as well as the other creatures in the water. His restraint in his interactions, how he let nature take its' course, it was a relief and also a great lesson for those watching. Do not disturb animals in their environment!

The imagery, the observations, what he was able to catch on camera leaves you in awe and inspires you to want to help protect this world. Beautifully captured, many life lessons taught along the way.

Black Is King (2020)
9/10
Requires the viewer to do some work
10 August 2020
"The royalty in you is there for you to be a blessing to others. For you to leave a legacy that others can look to and find hope and find strength and find healing as well"-from Black is King

I didn't really know what Black is King was about. When I heard Beyonce made a visual album, I thought it was just going to be some sort of self indulgent, superficial way to enrich herself. Then, I read an article about this movie from the perspective of 7 African artists (you can find it on CBC.ca). As I became more informed, I realized how wrong my perception, my judgement, was and enticed me to watch it, without having seen a preview.

This piece definitely requires you to educate yourself. It requires you to learn about the references made throughout the entire movie and get to know a little more about African cultures. You have to seek out what people who are from Africa are saying about it, their explanation of all the references that people who aren't from their culture don't know is insightful and helpful.

Doing some reading, before or after watching it (I suggest before, so you're an educated viewer), it allows you to appreciate Black is King SO MUCH MORE. I found myself LOOKING for specific people, more aware of the story and what was happening.

From the articles I read, I learned many of the dances included in the choreography are African. I learned of certain moves and dances and was able to recognize them as I watched. I learned most of the dancers and directors are African. The blue dancer? He's Nigerian and one of the choreographers! I learned who the directors are, what their style is, and what part they directed. I learned the wardrobe, from the colours, to the animal print and patterns, and jewelry, represent various African tribes and have symbolic meaning. The scene where women are putting what looks like red clay on their dreads/locks and skin? This is what I learned of them: "the Himba people work vigorously to ensure that their beliefs and cultures aren't contaminated in any way by outside influences, and as a result they have mostly avoided contact with modern society to keep the culture alive. So the fact that Reginaldo Mar, a Namibian creative who works closely with the Himba women, was able to get special permission from the OvaHimba leaders to let the women leave the Kunene Region and get on a plane to fly to Durban was insane to me. In order to do so, they had to get these women birth certificates and passports on very short notice. The Beyoncé team maintained integrity in how the tribes and people are represented, and for that I applaud them." -Muginga António How interesting is THAT?! It's unfortunate that, had someone I follow on social media, who I trust, not shared a link to that article, I would not have known any of this. Not knowing of the Himba people, I feel I would have missed out. That scene would just have gone under the radar. Instead, I LOOKED for it, I waited for it.

I decided to watch with subtitles and I found it made it easier to understand how it follows The Lion King story line. This is a musical interpretation of The Lion King. It's not straightforward. I feel it's like an Opera, or reading Shakespeare, you need to learn about it, to sort of translate it, in order to understand the story, and when you make the effort to learn about it, it makes sense and you appreciate it. This makes me think of my 5th grade school trip to see The Phantom of the Opera. Weeks prior, in music class and as part of our English class, we learned the meaning of every song (I can still hear my teacher saying "read between the lines"), every lyric, what the story was about, the hows, wheres and whys. Because of this, we were equipped to understand and better appreciate what we were seeing. Viewers of Black Is King need something like that. Even those who loved it, like myself, may have missed a lot of the symbolism, which is unfortunate.

I actually prefer this re-telling of The Lion King than the one from 2019 which, while visually beautiful, it just fell flat. Here, there's a certain passion and excitement to it that was missing from the 2019 version. The visuals, the music, the beauty, the story, the journey, it has it all! It's layered and emotional. If we're going to follow The Lion King story, everyone gathered as Beyonce walks to the water holding a baby boy, is the birth of Simba when all the animals gather to celebrate. The song Bigger is talking to Simba about his potential, to embrace who he is, etc. But it's also about insecurity and self love "If you feel insignificant, you better think again Better wake up because you're part of something way bigger You're part of something way bigger Not just a speck in the universe Not just some words in a bible verse You are the living word Ahh, you're part of something way bigger Bigger than you, bigger than we"

I do feel it requires more than 1 viewing to fully grasp everything because there's SO MUCH going on and it's so layered. I feel there should be an accompanying video that explains and delves into all the symbolism, the references, the cultures, etc. I mean, had I not stumbled onto that 1 article (and then searched for others) and had I not watched it with subtitles, all the work that went into incorporating various African cultures, and how the music and lyrics tell The Lion King story, would have all gone over my head and I would be writing a negative review resembling the others.

Whether or not you've watched it, I highly recommend doing some reading in order to have a better understanding of the movie. I suggest/recommend reading: "7 African artists share their feelings on the glory - and missteps - of Beyoncé's Black is King" by Amanda Parris on CBC.ca We Are Africans. Here's Our View Of Beyoncé's 'Black Is King' by Ifeanyi Nsofor and Esther Ngumbi Buzzfeed has an interview with Stephen "Papi" Ojo, the blue man in the movie. He choreographed many of the dances. To understand how Beyonce is telling The Lion King story, read "Beyonce Remixed the Lion King Meaning by Spencer Kornhaber. That article is about the album The Gift (which is where all the songs for Black is KIng come from), it helps explain which songs are about which Lion King scenes.

Why was Jax allowed to get away with what he did?
8 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The club has rules and when you break them, you face the consequences. We witnessed this throughout the series. It makes absolutely no sense that suddenly the club wouldn't follow through with Jax, there is no indication that they changed how they function, or why they would be lenient with Jax and not Juice. Especially that Juices' "crime" was much less severe than Jax's. I mean, Jax took the club on a killing spree out of revenge. All Juice did was tell Nero that Jax had him kill Darvany, which caused no problems, Nero still worked with Jax and trusted him. Their decision to spare Jax would have made more sense if Jax had given them JTs' manuscript. They would have read it, agreed things needed to change, and the change would have started with not killing Jax. Instead, the club decided to break their own rules, with no explanation or logical reason for it. Why are they all OK with what Jax did? Not only did he take them on a vengeful killing spree, he killed a member of the Sons and lied about why and what happened. Ridiculous

It feels like Kurt is THAT person who went to film school and they think they're SO artistic. He got really into Shakespeare and thought "I'm gonna do a modern day Hamlet, but take in a different artistic direction, I'll make it about biker gangs! This will be a work of art!" There are so many examples of this in this episode. 1- the camera panning to the bread and wine for longer than needed when Jax sees the homeless woman 2- the homeless woman. 3- Jax on the steps with the blanket over him, then standing, the blanket falling to the ground. ugh. 4- Jax driving down the highway being followed by cops. More and more cops get added behind him, yet, NO cops show up in the other direction? ughh 5- the crows flying out of the trees as Jax drives down the highway. I mean, they fly out, one at a time, it feels like it's on a loop. 6- Jax letting go of the handles and holding his arms out... c'mon! 7- the camera panning to the bread on the road with the blood trickling into the shot.... It's all so pretentious. It feels like Kurt thinks he's the greatest thing to happen to TV/film making. He thinks he's creating visual masterpiece. He's not. He's creating a bunch of eye roll worthy cliché moments. And of course, because not only does Kurt think HE'S the best thing to happen to TV, he also thinks this of his wife, so even with her character dead, he had to make sure we still saw her a few times in this episode, so she can have all 92 episodes on her resumé. Gemma in the body bag with the report on her chest before the bag gets zipped up was so unnecessary and, like almost every single scene and story involving Gemma, added nothing to the story. It would have been more effective to see Unser like that because of his innocence, how he just wanted to help, but all the Tellers did was just continuously screw him over. Seeing him being zipped up in a body bag would have pulled at all our heart strings.Or Juice! That would have been so sad, because we know Juice has no one. Ugh, that would have been heartbreaking! But no, Kurt needed to give his wife that screen time. Well, at least he didn't end the series with another one of Katey Sagals' songs. 3 stars because of the music. Excellent soundtrack

Set aside the faults of the episode to praise the twins who play Abel
7 August 2020
There's still a lot wrong in the writing and characters, but that's not what I want to give attention to. The twins who play Abel... those little boys are AMAZING. They're doing better than some of the actors who've been on the show (like the guy who played Joey, Venus's son... yikes). So young and SO talented. Their acting doesn't look forced or fake, you can actually see and feel the confusion, the anger. Would not want to be their parents cuz imagine the things they'd get away with?! haha I'm just wowed by them. I hope Hollywood doesn't eat them up and spit them out.

don't hire your wife
7 August 2020
For the love of God. The music on the show, throughout the series, has been mostly amazing. However, to the detriment of the show once again, Kurt Sutter chose to focus on giving his wife a job instead of focusing on what would fit with the show. The song may or may not have been a good choice, the singer,Katey Sagal, definitely was NOT a good choice. It was irritating and they put the music way too loud over the scenes. Feels like Kurt didn't want his wife, even in music, to be in the background, no. The fact that Katey Sagal isn't that great a singer, just made the entire sequence painful to watch. She's not a bad singer, but not good, definitely not great. Her version of Greensleeves playing over this particular sequence was distracting and took away from what was going on. It undermined what was suppose to be a shocking and gruesome moment. It ruined those scenes.

the show could have done without Gemma
6 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm re-watching the entire series. I remember when it first aired, I disliked Gemma, but in a "love to hate" kind of way. Watching the series again, I've noticed how useless her character actually is. The entire series would have played out the exact same way without her. The story line of her being involved in JTs death went nowhere. It could have just been Clay and it would have ended up the same. The story line of Jax having his dads journals went nowhere. So all of that could have happened without her. Her being raped added nothing to the story. They would still have gone after The League. It didn't really unite Jax and Clay when she told them as Clay still betrayed the club, still had his own plans for things, it changed nothing and Jax still didn't trust him or approve of things he did. Her getting arrested and framed by Stahl didn't affect the story. Stahl was still going after the club, Stahl could have framed basically anyone else, or no one, it wouldn't have changed anything, seeing as they got her to change her story anyways, having Gemma was just a detour in the story. Gemma was useless in Ireland. Without her, Maureen would still have walked in on Jax and her daughter, they would have found out their half siblings, she still would put the letters in Jax's bag. Gemma added nothing to that story. The whole thing about Tara finding the letters could have been done without Gemma. Again, Gemma was just a detour. It would work exactly the same without her, Clay would find out about the letters, put a hit on Tara, and everything would be the same. Nero could have been introduced without her. She was unnecessary and just another detour in the story. Even her killing Tara could have been done without her. Tara could have been killed at any point during the show, either in the attempted kidnapping or the explosion at the club. Jax would still have unraveled, and it wouldn't have been so rushed. They could have really gone deep into his vengence instead of cramming it into a couple episodes. All Gemma gave us was the overused "I've got to protect my family" and it's variations, which she continued to use in this episode. I kind of want to go through the series again and turn that into a drinking game. That and "it's OK sweetheart" and "I'm sorry". Gemma's presence on the show is so painfully drawn out, the only logical explanation is that Kurt wanted to give his wife a starring role, and keep her there for as long as possible even if it undermined the show. I'm inclined to believe this because of 1- her character adding absolutely nothing to the show and 2- him having needlessly included her music in a few episodes. It's like a shrine to her. It's bad writing and bad TV to have a character that has no use. When an entire show would be the same without a character, it's bad writing to keep that character. Chuck has more purpose as a character than Gemma does. He brings comic relief, runs errands for the club, helps them on some of their jobs, etc. Won't be watching this series again, even as a drinking game.

Great to see Venus back
5 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It's great to see Venus back. I'm glad that they didn't make her trans character cartoonish. They showed her as human and complex and they didn't have the guys make a big deal of her. They treat her like a woman. I'm also glad they had a child porn story line and that they showed a camera pointing to a crib. I don't think people realize how prevalent this problem is in our society. I've been crapping on the writers a lot with other episodes, but this, this was excellent. They used their platform to talk about this somehow. The news rarely covers it, TV shows and movies don't really have stories about this. 1 child pornographer/pedophile has up to 150 victims, so think about how many victims there are in your country, on your continent, in the world, etc. I suggest looking up Child Rescue Coalition, Free The Girls, Plan International, among many other organizations that help victims of pedophilia and sex trafficking.

Aside from that, I have to say, the boy they chose to play Venus' son is a horrible actor. Thankfully the other actors carried the scenes he was in. Just him saying "Grandma why does grandpa have a gun?" oh please, that was so bad. The weight of the story, Walton Goggins (Venus/Vincet) performance, Tig's behaviour, all make up for this actors horrible performance. I think he may have been hired as a favour, he must be someone's friend or relative.

It's good to see Tara being strong again. Her character was first introduced as someone intelligent, strong, independent and the writers turned her into someone annoying. She's strong again and really is focused on getting away from crime. I love Wendy, but they seem to have done the same to her. She was a strong character, fighting her addiction, she knew she couldn't take care of Abel. She got help, got better, got a job helping others, was assertive about building a relationship with Abel. Even when Jax drugged her, she wouldn't back down. She's strong. But they've turned her into a pawn, made her unsure, insecure, doubtful and is pushed around. Drea de Matteo is so good and so under utilized in this show. I wish there had been more of her throughout the seasons. I may be biased though because I loved her on The Sopranos.

Despite all my issues with what they've done with some of the characters and with the horrible choice of actor as Joey, this was an excellent episode of Sons of Anarchy. Definitely in the Top 10

Sons of Anarchy: The Mad King (2013)

Repetitive
4 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Everything that happened in this episode has happened before in past episodes. Gemma is forced by prison guards to have sex with Clay while they watch. This same scenario happened in season 5, when Carla tried to force Gemma and Nero to have sex while she watched. And let's not forget, Jax wanted her to sleep with Clay to get info from him and Gemma being raped in season 2.

The explosion at the club. There was already an explosion in a previous season, when a van was planted in their lot exploded. They've also been shot at.

The betrayal, the broken deals... same old same old.

Gemma doing everything to keep "her boys" in town, same old same old. Thing that doesn't make sense is, why does Gemma want the boys to stay in Charming? Why couldn't she just move out of Charming herself? It's the dumbest "problem" they created for Gemma. She's not part of a club, she's not with Clay anymore. If she wants to be near the kids, she could just move with them. This "she's not taking my family away" story line is so weak. Had they done a story line where Tara was getting a restraining order, maybe it would have more weight. But not letting your son, daughter in law and grand kids move to another state after they've been kidnapped, almost killed, threatened doesn't make sense and the writers, since the beginning, haven't given Gemma a reason to be this way, a reason why she doesn't want to leave Charming. She doesn't work, has no friends, no other family in the area. Why stay? Also, we're suppose to believe she cares about family, yet we haven't heard anything about her father since they killed his caregiver and put him in a home. This is yet another example of lack of detail in writing, why wouldn't Gemma just move? Why wouldn't she want the grand kids away from the violence? Why not go to her father?

Another bad move, Wendy. She was a strong character and they suddenly weakened her. Why? She wanted to see her kid and now that she's given the chance to have custody, without a battle, she's hesitant? She wanted the kids out of Charming, she told Tara to be safe, to watch out for Gemma, and now that it's all happening, she's doubtful? All because of a few nice words from Gemma, who she knows to be manipulative and self centered. This makes no sense at all character wise, and it's just more of the same.

more inconsistencies
3 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Gemma gets in accident while driving the kids, Abel is in the hospital. Nero, who has a kid with a disability, tells Gemma "it's OK"? We've seen the kind of person Nero is and this dialogue doesn't fit with his character at all. It also doesn't make much sense as to why he's interested in Gemma at all. It should have just been a one night thing and then he gets into business with the Sons. The Nero and Gemma love story makes no sense. The writers haven't done anything to show their attraction to each other, why they're attracted to each other, why Nero is protective of her, etc. It feels forced. Also, lying about her being high makes no sense. The hospital would have done blood tests and they would have come out positive. She would have been arrested for driving under the influence. I've posted about this before, but the lack of attention to detail is a major problem with the show. They just skip over details out of convenience instead of logical writing and story telling. It's annoying and weakens the show.

One of the better episodes
3 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
While there are still some flaws in the writing, the loss of Opie and his funeral was well done. I also have to give props to the music department. Every single episode has excellent music. The problem though is the Wendy story line. It makes NO SENSE for Tara and Jax to be creating friction and to incite a custody battle. Abel was kidnapped while with them. How come Wendy doesn't know about this? If she does, why isn't it brought up? Also, Jax and Tara would want to AVOID a custody battle because of the kidnapping, not just of Abel, but of Tara. They would lose. This is poorly thought out from the writers and a weak story line. This is why more female writers are needed in writing rooms. The more logical thing to have done story wise would have been Tara being afraid/jealous of the relationship Abel would have with his birth mom, if he would love her more, love Tara less, would it bring Jax and Wendy closer? would it bring Gemma and Wendy closer? This would have played into the unraveling of Tara more than that Clara thing, which was another weak story.

It's the lack of attention to detail that gets me
2 August 2020
The most annoying thing about this show is the lack of attention to detail. In this episode, Bobby suddenly has a guitar while in holding. Where did he get the guitar? Why is he allowed to have a guitar? Who brought him the guitar? It's things like this that happens in every single episode that really lower the quality of the show. Someone or some people aren't thinking about how these things fit into the story or how it makes sense. In this case, it seems wanted to have a specific visual, Bobby sitting alone in his cell, barefoot playing the guitar, like they thought "ooo, this would look so cool!" without regard to how it has anything to do with the story or if it made any sense. This is either on the director or the writers or both. It's just annoying to be into the story and they get these eye roll moments.

Best episode of the series
1 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Maggie Siff was brilliant as Tara. I've found her acting mediocre and often annoying up until now. But the scene in the hospital with Jax was just heartbreaking yet you can feel Tara's strength and hopelessness while you're thinking "she's right". The scene with Opie and Jax, Ryan Hurst (Opie) was brilliant. His pain, frustration and hurt just comes through brilliantly. Ryan's portrayal of Opie has been perfect throughout the series. He's able to show so much emotion without saying much. Quiet and subtle.

Katy Sagal's portrayal of Gemma was perfect in this episode. She wasn't annoying like she's been for the whole series, here she was strong, vengeful, calm but not in a peaceful way, more cunning. We finally see her as the puppet master she is. She used Clay's love for her to have JT killed. Now she's using Usner's love for her to have Clay killed.

This episode had so many excellent moments.

"Protect my family"
1 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm getting tired of hearing Jax and Gemma say they're "protecting their family". In an earlier episode, when Juice is in hospital, he quotes what Jax told him about joining the club, that the club comes first, family second, so why is Jax putting his family first? Why is it all about his family and their interests? How he tells Tara "I wont' let that happen" or "I won't let anything bad happen", really? You just got some heads delivered to the club. Oh, and Abel and Tara have already been kidnapped, Gemma was gang raped, etc. Why isn't Tara saying anything about that? why doesn't she bring up being kidnapped when he defends staying in the club as "protecting his family"? It's fascinating how everyone seems to have moved on from kidnappings, Jax using it as a punchline in a previous episode. It feels like the story lines and characters weren't developed ahead of time, they're just doing writing without really thinking about where things are going nor trying to tie in things from past episodes. It feels like a teen show, where things get resolved by the end of the episode or after a couple episodes and it's like it never happened.

Isn't Gemma wanted for murder?
30 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I feel like the writers are writing for convenience instead of following through with their own story. Gemma is wanted for murder, there's a reward for her, yet law enforcement doesn't seem to be doing anything to actually try to find her. I mean, why didn't they have her dads' place under surveillance? Why aren't they following Jax and Clays' movements? Why aren't they following Tara's movements? The only "threat" of law is that the guys might have to go back to jail because of what happened at the funeral, which doesn't make sense either, why would they be going to jail? Jax for assaulting the shooter that was caught I understand, but why the other guys?

It's frustrating to watch, especially that I remember liking this show so much when it first aired, now I'm watching it like "oh, this is lazy writing"

Would have been good if not for major flaws
29 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I watched the show when it first aired, I'm re-watching it now and it's not as great as I remember, there are A LOT of flaws, mistakes and bad writing. This episode was especially bad. Here's the thing, the SAMCRO family are in lock down at the shop. Gemma and Tara leave with escort to run some "errands". First, why does Tara go to the hospital to do paper work? Where's Gemma while she's doing that? They're in lock down with their lives at risk and Tara, who is suspended from the hospital, decides to go in for paperwork?

Second, why does Tara go back to Jax's place after leaving Gemma with Polly if they're in lock down at the shop? How does AJ know she's there?

Third, the biggest flaw, Tara and Gemma didn't leave the shop with Abel. He isn't with Tara at the hospital. we don't see him while they're running errands, etc. He's nowhere and he suddenly appears out of the blue at the house with Tara where he gets kidnapped.

This was so poorly thought out and written. But it still got stars for being partially entertaining.

The problem with the Moira character
26 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
She was murdered when she was young, yet, her ghost has aged. Now, up until this episode, because men see the younger version of her and the women see the older version, the viewer can believe "maybe it depends on what the person interacting with WANTS to see". But in this episode, when Ben sees her has an elderly woman, she says "you're finally beginning to see things as they are" How is "how things are" her being an elderly woman? If aging is how things are, why haven't any other ghost aged? Why haven't the kids grown up?

While the episode is really good, and with all the easter eggs in the entire series, the hints towards future seasons, how they all connect somehow, this feels like a pretty big goof on the writers part. So part of me is wondering, is there a hidden meaning behind her being older and it being "how things really are"? Having watched the entire series (up until season 9), there's no explanation for it, which makes it feel more like a mistake/poor writing.

Bad ending to a good season
26 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is my 2nd viewing of Season 1, I've gone back to refresh my memory. I remember not liking this episode, thought that maybe after having watched every season of the show, I'd think differently. I don't. It feels like they didn't really know how to end it, it doesn't flow with the rest of the season or with what happened in other episodes. The ghosts are always interacting with each other, so why didn't any ghost intervene when Hayden killed Ben? They get together to scare away the next family that moves in, why didn't they do that for the Harmons?

The concept of scaring away the family feels like the writers didn't know what to do with the dead family, were up watching Beetlejuice one night and thought "oh! let's do that!" but it doesn't work here at all because it doesn't match the tone of the show.

there's fiction and there's being ridiculous
19 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
OK, I get it, it's make believe. It's a show, but there's creating a fictional world, and then there's being ridiculous about real situations. Such as Barbara giving birth and moments later walking around in heels and fighting bad guys. She just gave birth, had a natural birth, and is now kicking and fighting bad guys immediately after? She said it was the most painful thing, yet is perfectly fine.

This show started off strong and clever. I feel they've really strayed from the characters, from the story, everything. Bruce Wayne's constant involvement with the GCPD, how he dresses, the gadgets he uses, Lucious and Alfred also working with the GCPD, the citizens seeing all them working together, did they forget that people aren't suppose to know he's Batman? Years later Batman would be in town and no one would make the connection of "hey, Bruce Wayne used some of these gadgets when he was helping the GCPD, was a skilled fighter, fought Penguin, Riddler, Joker, Bane, but who could possibly be Batman?" Same with Selena. She wears claws, uses a whip, is a skilled fighter, but people aren't suppose to know she's Catwoman later on? I feel they've strayed too far from the source material, from who these characters are. They seem to have forgotten many of these identities they're forging, are secret.

Also, while the comedy between Penguin and Riddler is amusing, I feel Penguin was more "evil" in the beginning of the series and he's gotten softer over time, most of the villains have. I mean, they're worried about hurting and killing people, they're worried about what will happen to Gotham if they leave, really? And Bane surrenders... why? Because of bats?

I'm so disappointed that the show is ending with such a poor final season.

Trying too hard
3 July 2020
I'm 10mins in and it's just so bad. I had a feeling it would be, but I thought it was maybe because i like the Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu ones so much that I maybe wasn't giving this one the benefit of the doubt. I decided to watch it because, hey, maybe it's as good or better! No. It's trying so hard to be feminist. That first scene when the guy is saying women shouldn't work in certain professions, what as the point of that dialogue? Like the fact that he's a criminal wasn't enough to make him a bad guy, they had to be all "AND this is what he thinks of women!" I'm all for sending messages of female empowerment in movies and TV, but this is not how to do it. Watch the Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu ones instead. The story, the acting, and the cinematography is better.

Predictable but still a good watch
9 June 2020
While many on here found Kerry Washington difficult to watch, I thought she was one of the best parts of the series. All the "kids" were excellent as well. The depth and emotion they brought to their characters, at those young ages, is astounding. I found Kerry Washington's portrayal of Mia powerful. She brings pain, strength, vulnerability, I found I could FEEL her. My disappointment is in Reese. I feel she plays the exact same character in Big Little Lies, even in Legally Blond, Home Again, etc. She plays a rich woman with little to no real life experience. It's just felt like this has been played , she wasn't bringing anything new here.

I do have to say it's VERY predictable. From what happens to each of the teens, to the adults... everything is pretty much predictable an episode ahead. I haven't read the book, so I don't know if this was done to make things "easier" on the viewer, or if it's how it was written. It doesn't ruin the show, but it does make it seem to go on a little longer than it should

Oh! and can we talk about the soundtrack?! The music is PERFECT.

For most of the acting, the cinematography, and the music, it gets 7/10!

Unoriginal
11 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If you're a true fan of horror, you've seen this type of movie 100 times before. Outsiders unknowingly enter a cult while on vacation/on a trip, they begin to "mysteriously" disappear one by one has the cult kills them off. What made this movie particularly bad, was all the attention it received as a "good" movie, so I came in with high hopes, even after seeing the preview. I feel those who enjoyed this movie, haven't watched many horror films. For horror fans, there will be zero surprises. You have the main character with a history of family issues and experiences a trauma, obviously they're the hero. As soon as there's mention of the May Queen, you know she's going to be crowned. You know the jerk friend will be killed off for being inappropriate, the one who "geeks" out over cults will be killed for curiosity, from her conversation with Pelle in the apartment, you know Dani is the "chosen" one, etc. They even have the character who's disfigured because of incest. I will say the only approach that was different, was the use of colour and cinematography. It's a bright, colourful, visually "happy" horror movie. It doesn't go the dark approach. The people of the cult are happy and friendly, even their rituals don't feel "dark". So that gets 4 stars.
