Each Character Deserved Own Episodes!
30 May 2022
What a jumble. Each episode is all over the place. The Obamas are too soon to potray, the Roosevelts deserve so much more, making the Ford story the most interesting. However the best story is so convoluted it is disrespectful to the character. In fact all three stories are disrespectful to the character.

This is Anything But True Crime!
14 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Based on what could have become an interesting drama, this is not. Only reason I follow the story is because I know the true case. Starts off right in the middle of the story causing a great deal of confusion to most who have no knowledge of the case. Plus strange background flashbacks only add to the confusion. I understand why the movie star background but other times have no idea what is being shown. I certainly hope the visual style never catches on. It is unsightly! Could have been a very interesting drama because there appears to be no reason for the murders. A possible theory on this would be interesting, and another on how they got away with the murder of two people for years. 'Involving an elderly father that travels, obviously getting older as time goes on, never sells his house, eventually reaching the age of 100.' An unbelievable story everyone seems to swallow. The goverment makes contact due to his centenary and the jig is up. If I had no idea of the case wouldn't have made it past episode one. The acting is good, which is about all I have to say for it. Obviously the leading lady did appear because her husband did the writing. This is not a black comedy, there is nothing funny, sarcastic or making a social statement about it. Storyline all over the place and frankly the production is of no valuel.

Not As Bad as Everyone Said, But Bad!
30 November 2021
Why oh why do they put people who can't Broadway sing and dance in movie musicals? Lucy, who I love, was determined to do this and put her own money into it. Yes, she paid for it, because it became the worst disaster of her career. Too old for the part and not equipped to do the singing and dancing. The movie as a whole just wasn't up to par but as the titular character a lot of the fault was on her shoulders. She just couldn't carry the movie and it became a box office disaster. We all know who the part should have went to, but at that time she wasn't a big enough name to carry the picture, or at least they thought she couldn't carry the picture. If the choice had been based on talent Mame would not have turned into a disaster movie.

11 January 2021

The Dancing Divinity!
11 March 2020
Jessie Matthews' known as The Dancing Divinity on both sides of the Atlantic. A star on Broadway and who many at the time considered should be Fred Astair's partner on film, is the star of this and several superior British musicals. In fact she was the gamine in the first musical version of Victor/Victoria, "First A Girl." This is a superb vehical for the dancing Jessie, a wonderful combination of both ballet and tap. Jessie's films were know for their quality which rivalled Hollywood. The story is the usual mixup of who is who, but one really watches for the dances and sometimes the costumes. A friend of Jessie's on seeing the costume for the final dance number commented, "Could they make that suit any tighter." Jessie had a fabulous figure, as seen in the film, why not show it at it's best. Her movies are also known for their original choreography, which she often did herself or with her own choreographer a black American, who in all possibility would never have been entertain in Hollywood at that time. He does appear briefly in one of Jessie's films, dancing under a lampost. One dance number in one movie is inspired by the German silent film "Metropolis." Jessie had the chance to dance with Fred Astaire, who she knew along with his sister Adele, twice, "Damsel in Distress" and "Holiday Inn." Unfortunatly fate stepped in and neither film starred Jessie. Jessie suffered from mental illness which put a stop to her career in some ways. However, she did star in the 1960's in the UK's popular daily serial on radio, Mrs. Dale's Diary. If you are into dance and get a chance to see any of Jessie's films take the opportunity, the stories may be lacking but the dance numbers won't be.

Fun To See Two Stars Of The Day Doing Something They Don't Ordinarily!
15 May 2019
Was a rip off "Of It Happened One Night,"but the fact you have Davis and Cagney in a romantic comedy makes it all the fun! So nice to see Bette smile, laugh, and look so pretty! Cagney was always good, even in comedies. The whole cast makes it worthwhile and then some.

Why bother!
11 February 2019
No one took the time to give this movie the feel of the '30s. It has the feel of the 1960s and a much too old leading lady. I admire Natalie Wood but what on earth made her think she could pass for 15 at the time she did this. The story over all is pitiful. Wood, Redford and Gordon give it their best, even though Redford's agent tried to talk him out of doing it. The best thing in it is the musical numbers done by Wood in the film, with special effects they would never be able to do in the thirties. 1960's idea of what Hollywood was like in the 1930's. The whole thing is strange!

Save Your Time, Watch The 1974 Version!
1 December 2018
Unfortunatly this film in no way approaches the class and elegance of the 1974 version of "Murder On The Orient Express." Neither the cast, story, acting, or music come close to the original. However in the over forty years since that version the use of special effects have grown, almost to the point of who needs actors. The meant to be spectacular scenery is so spectacular it looks like special effects, phoney. The effects, bad as they look, seem to be the only reason for the remake.

I was and am not happy with the ending of the story. I always consider that the audience have somehow been cheated. Nevertheless it is true to the novel. For so many reasons, don't wasted your time on this and go with the 1974, original, version.

A Film With Wonderful Potential
27 May 2018
I throughly enjoyed this film. It has it's faults but no film is perfect. It would make a wonderful television series based on the book. The film doesn't have time to tell the full story but a series would include most of the story and hopefully be accurate. Unlike a similar movie with the title 'The Great Escape" which was largly fictionalized, or a sitcom such as 'Hogan's Heros' which I believed borrowed heavily from this movie. I would love to see a quality accurate representation of Sargent Major Cowards exploits during World War II and his immense bravery in certain situations. In fact I believe such a series, produced in the UK, would make a genuine contribution, not only to British history but to the PBS series 'Masterpiece'.

Murder, She Wrote (1984–1996)

Wonderful Series!
20 May 2018
I am not going to dissect this series. I just love it, all of it, the good and the bad. It just all came together and became a part of most people's Sunday Night in North America. People of all ages knew of Jessica Fletcher. People of all ages know of Angela Lansbury. Miss Lansbury, the regular cast, and guest stars made the end of everybody's weekend extra special. When the show started in reruns on A&E it was a blessing. Ill at the time "Murder, She Wrote" was the highlight of my day. Although on for twelve seasons, "Murder, She Wrote" and Dame Angela did not deserve the ending given it by CBS. Moved from it's regular Sunday time spot to a spot opposite the show "Friends". A strategic move to end the series, which was still doing well on Sunday night. Regardless "Murder, She Wrote lives on and is more than fondly remembered. As for Dame Angela, well the theatre before and after, "Murder, She Wrote", has found her to be a treasure and regarded by many as a living legend, both in and out of showbiz!

True Nostalgia
31 March 2018
Wonderful to see the great Diana Dors in her prime. She really was an actress but was seldom allowed to show it, as in this film. The storyline is similar to romantic comedies of the '30s and '40s. Dors married to Gobel, somewhat reminiscent of the Marylin Monroe characters often matched with male characters thought not to be in her league, are an enjoyable couple. No doubt that this is a piece of fluff, but enjoable to watch both leads at the time their names were part of pop culture.

Autumn Leaves (1956)

A Surprisingly Enjoyable Movie!
23 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Joan and Cliff are both wonderful in this 1956 drama. An unknown movie, with an unusual story for the 1950s. A spring - autumn romance. Not at all surprising for a husband/wife but a wife/husband. The spring- autumn romance of Cliffs character's ex-wife and his father raises no eyebrows in that department, but a father sleeping with his son's wife, well! Naturally, the leading male character comes with problems. It is up to Joan to stick by her husband and hope that he recovers, despite her misgivings he will no longer want her as his wife. A sympathetic role for Joan. Recommended!
