Psych 3: This Is Gus (2021)
Best Psych Movie So Far!
A fun movie from start to finish that manages to include pretty much everyone we expect to see at one point or another. The jokes land, with some genuinely hilarious moments (Rob Zombie outfit), and all the in-references that "Psych-o's" expect are present in a good way. My only complaint is the ending, and how it fails to expand on Shawn and Juliet deciding not to have children, and whether or not that changed after Shawn helped deliver Gus Jr. The stand alone films just keep getting better, and I'm really hoping we get at least two more films with a final ending shot of Shawn and Gus with two homes and a connecting pool!
Mr. Mayor (2021)
Mixed Bag - Would have worked better as the 30 Rock spin off.
Mr. Mayor isn't a bad show, but it isn't a great show. There are some funny moments throughout; however, some of the characters feel forced and disingenuous, mainly because the writing feels very close to 30 Rock. Ted Danson's and Holly Hunter's characters are fun to watch. Overall, the writing feels very 30 Rock, and considering this was supposed to be a spin-off for Alec Baldwin it makes sense. All in all, worth the watch.
The Vanished (2020)
Could Have Been A Lot Better...
Worth the watch, but overstays it's welcome in terms of length. There were many different points where the movie felt like it was reaching an end but kept going trying to tie up loose ends. The ending scene is quite depressing and does leave you feeling something. The unreliable narrator idea could have been handled better, but the inclusion of the Twin Towers picture early in the movie is a nice wink and nod to those who end up rewatching.
NOS4A2: The Shorter Way (2019)
Hope it gets better...
The Shorter Way is an interesting mess of a pilot episode. When I separate the book from the series I can find a few different aspects that I enjoy, yet, I'm not hooked. I feel the intro could have been more interesting if the writers followed the book closer. For instance, when the nurse takes a "hot bag of blood to Charlie Manx" he grabs her wrist and threatens her son. Charlie is supposed to be close to death in a coma. It's a great hook and frightening.
Vic was cast well in the series. I don't mind her character being aged up for the show, but her being a bit older does take away from the intrigue set up between her and Charlie in the novel. My main gripe is the tired teenage dialogue between Vic and her peers. I won't go on about it like the show did.
I love the casting of Zachary Quinto as Charlie Manx. I hope the writers really go for it in the coming episodes in regards to his character. Charlie is evil. The series needs to own that if it aims to succeed. In this first episode he failed to come across as scary. From what I saw of Bing I'm more optimistic. It's a weird change to have him working at Vic's high school, but it could be interesting. Vic's parents were portrayed relatively well and I have no qualms in that regard. I'm at a loss for Maggie's character on the screen. I wish the stutter was there, but maybe it'll show up in later episodes. Her friendship with the local officer also comes off as a bit weird and plot driven. The moment she pulls out the scrabble pieces and spells THE BRAT was a highlight.
Overall, I'm a bit underwhelmed by the pilot, but I'm going to go along with it and give AMC's adaptation a fare chance.
4/10
NOS4A2 (2019)
If You're a fan of the book DO NOT WATCH!!!
AMC's Nos4a2 is not bad, it's just different. Even the most pointless, yet important details from the book have been switched up, rearranged, and altered in funny ways that feel forced. The writers are definitely going for a younger audience. I got MTV Scream vibes a couple times throughout the episode. A lot of the character dialogue, especially between the high schoolers, is a bit cringy.
I'm not sure how to feel being a fan of the source material and all of Joe Hills work. I think I can sum it up best by saying this adaptation, through and through, is very different from what I imagined. If I wasn't such a fan of the book I wouldn't stick it out past the first episode. Very disappointed and Extremely underwhelmed.
