Terry Tate, Office Linebacker (2002)
Fun but plain
An office boss decides to hire a football player to fix the problems in the office. Terry Tate, the football player, jumps into everyone who is doing something bad is who is having a bad behaviour and shouts them. I found some problems in this short film, but there are also good things about it.
First of all, the film is too short to have a good character development. From the moment when the characters appear to the end, there is no proper story to tell to the audience. For me it was the same watching it than not watching it. It is true that the film is fun, but that is the only good thing I can really tell about it.
Also, the decision of hiring a black guy for the main character feels that it can make the audience think that they hired him because black people are aggressive, and I do not think that it was a good decision.
Furthermore, I do not really see the point of making a film like this where nothing really happens and where there is not a nice story to tell to the audience. Just showing how a guy jumps into people even if it is in an office, is not a really good idea in my opinion. Anyways, the film is nice to have a great time and laugh a little bit.
Born with It (2015)
Important topic and good visuals
This film is about a mixed black and Japanese boy who enters in a Japanese school. There, he feels rejected and the rejection from the other Japanese children, something that will make him realize who he is with the help of his mother and his new Japanese friend. I really liked this short film, it was very emotive and it is about the bullying, a subject which is really important in society nowadays.
I do not know really well about this topic because I am not a racialized person, but I really think that this film shows a reality which we do not talk about too much. Also, the fact that the film is situated in a small village helps us to realize that the situation is even worse as, for example, in cities like Tokyo where people are more used to different skin colored people. Also, it reflects a society which does not have a lot of education between children about AIDS.
The fact that the boy is half black is a really good decision in my opinion. If it was a white person, the feeling would not be the same as they are seen as "cool" sometimes, but black people are still not well accepted all over the world, and this is a really well way to criticise it. Finally, point that the character of the mother is my favourite as she brings the film a really warm feeling and makes us take the child's position even more. The acting of all the characters was really good and the film itself was very aesthetically pleasant.
Embers (2006)
Disturbing and difficult to understand
This short film is about a woman who lives in a house in the middle of a mountain waiting for her husband who is in the war. While she is waiting, she has some hallucinations with her husband's death, but finally the day comes and she meets him again, but there is something different in him after the war.
The movie for me was really disturbing and a little bit difficult to understand. There are some parts as the scene with the tea cup at the end of the film which I did not get their meaning. Also, the fact that the japanese guy approached her in her dreams was kind of strange, I did not get what it wanted to say.
Another disturbing thing was the ear. It was difficult to figure out what was inside of the fabric and, when I realized it was an ear, I felt weird. I don't think this is a bad thing, but I really think that screenwriters could have come up with a different thing to say that the man has changed during the war.
However, I liked the structure of the film, I think it was really clear what they wanted to transmit over all although these little scenes that I did not get really well. Interesting short but not really relatable.
The Crush (2010)
Bad depiction of women and very toxic
This film is about a child who is in love with his teacher. One day he gives her a ring to show her his affection, but everything is triggered when he meets the teacher's boyfriend, a moment when he realizes that he is not going to get the woman if the other guy is in between. I did not like this film at all because a lot of things. One of these things is that the story itself is quite disturbing; I did not know what happened with the kid to have such an intimate relationship with his teacher, I think there is a lack of information in this subject.
However, the main reason why I did not like this movie is because of the way that women and society are depicted. The film presents us a reality where the boys compete to get a woman as if she was a toy which they throw to each other when they want. Also, men are depicted as the typical way: they would do whatever in order to get the woman they want. What if the woman does not want to be with them? In the film you cannot even think about this possibility because she is interested in both of the boys and she even does not change her mind after the incident happened between the kid and her boyfriend. She also ends saying something like "The woman you get will be very lucky", something that triggered me a lot. I do not think this kind of stories should be displayed like this because it is a really important topic and this type of movies help to normalize a reality in which women are treated like toys.
Lifted (2006)
Funny and imaginative
This is a really funny and interesting short in my opinion. The short tells the story of a little alien who is doing the practical test for using an UFO and lift humans inside it, but it does not work and everything turns bad and the human hits every object inside his house. Without any piece of dialogue, the short is able to tell a story, but not a normal one, one really funny actually.
The character of the little alien is the main point of the story, but I would say that the funniest character is the other big alien who is supervising the test. His face expressions and the way he acts towards the little alien are the funniest parts of the story. Also, the way that we can relate to this story even them being aliens is really big. I mean, who does not think about the driving license test while watching this short? It is a really good reference about daily life in a very original way.
Finally, the short has a good outline in my opinion; is really easy to understand what is happening and why. Maybe it is because it is a film whose target are children, but I also think that there are some parts that adults can understand in other ways and I think that this makes the film really good. Good outline, good characters and funny, everything is well done.
The Shape of Water (2017)
Nice but hard to relate
The film is about a mute woman who works in a secret Government institution. One day she discovers that they are hiding a creature which looks like a mermaid and she helps it to escape the installations and start a new life. Actually the film was really strange for what I have to say, but there are some good points that I want to comment.
First of all, I do not think that the film is relatable at all because the story is really disturbing and strange. I do not mean that supernatural stories are not relatable, but this in particular had a strange feeling and made me think all the time that what I was watching was disturbing, and I felt awkward at some points. Also, there were some comments and scenes which I think they did not have to show. For example, in the one where the main character explains how the mermaid can have sex, I think that is a really inappropriate comment.
However, I think that the film is good because the story is very well built. It makes you think and ask yourself questions of what is going on, using elements that appear at the beginning and come again almost at the end of the film when you already forgot them and which solve a lot of questions. Also, the suspense during all the film was good although it was not as tense as I expected from a film of this director. Anyways is a good film but really disturbing and difficult to relate from my point of view.
Ready Player One (2018)
Good visuals but plain story
This film is about a boy who lives in a really futuristic and technologic reality where everyone plays a video game where they can have a new life. However, everything turns different when the creator of the game dies and a new mission in the game starts to be crowned the inheritor of the empire.
For me this film is really normal, nothing too much different from the other films. The story is the same: a boy who is a normal player but he gets to know the clue of the game and succeeds both in the game and in love. I would have liked to see something new from the typical love story although the film is interesting and great for having some fun with friends, but I would not pay for watching it at the cinema.
The animation is really good actually and in some scenes, they mixed real filmed images with animated ones and it was interesting. However, at some points the film lacked of story, just explosions and action without any relevant images, but I guess this is a film for entertaining and they did not wanted to create a piece of art. Also the characters were a little bit stereotypical as there were the main boy, the girl (who represents all the women in the world), an asian guy who knows martial arts, a chinese kid who is very smart, and a black girl who seems to represent the LGBT community. Just a normal movie with no clear motivations and normal characters.
Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
A piece of art
The story of this film is about the life of a girl named Amélie Poulain who one day she meets a boy in a really strange way. During all the film, Amélie will try to find that boy again and learn what love is, but in a very unusual way. I would like to say that this film is a piece of art and that, without any doubts, it is my favourite film.
Even though the film is telling a daily life story, it is not told in an usual way. The mechanism in which the film is based to tell the story and to show all the scenes seems awesome to me, everything happens like if we were looking at a production chain in a factory. Also, the fact that the story is that unusual and funny, make this even better as we do not expect at all what is going to happen again.
Furthermore, the fact that the story is not told neither by Amélie nor by a normal narrator but by a narrator who knows more than us and predicts what is going to happen, is one of the best points of this film. At some points during the film, the narrator says what is going to happen in the next few seconds or even in other scenes so, it is funny to know more or less funny to be watching a movie which seems like a realistic novel where we are even inside the head of the characters. Also, at some points, Amélie interacts with the narrator, giving us a more unrealistic feeling.
J'attendrai le suivant... (2002)
As real as life is
This short film is really good. It is about a woman who is in the train and a man who takes it and starts talking out loud asking for a woman to love him. Then, the woman starts to get interested in what the man is saying and she takes the chance to find her love. Even though this film is really short, the story is really well told and you can experiment a lot of feelings that the characters transmit really well, especially the woman, who I think that is the best character.
First of all, I will talk about the character of the woman. As I said before, I think that she is the best character of the film. As you see her story in the train, you can feel a lot of sensations. Everything she is thinking of and feeling, you can feel or think too, joy, awkwardness, loneliness, sadness.... For me, this is how a good character is built, she has to make the audience feel things and I really think that she did that very well.
Having such a good story condensed in a very short film is a very good aspect. There are a lot of characters whose stories seem to be really clear. You can imagine more or less who they are and how their lives are just by their actions or what they say. Also I think that the end of the film is pretty realistic in contrast to what happened inside of the train, where everyone lives in their own world imagining their new lives.
Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
Overacting and strange stituations
This film is about David and Keiko, a married couple who live near the sea in a small village. Keiko has some problems to have children and she had several abortions. Because of that, David starts to question himself if they could take care of one of his students from the English school, whose mother died in a train accident. I think that this film is interesting in some aspects, but I would like to say that I did not like it very much.
First of all, I would like to talk about the characters, and especially Keiko. Sometimes, the characters and actors seemed that they were a little bit out of what is going on. For the case of Keiko, she really looks like she is overacting. I mean, she is supposed to look concerned about her problem of not being able to have children, but sometimes it felt that it was too much and that she cannot think about other thing.
I would like to point also that one of the scenes, when Keiko and David talk in front of the child saying things like "his mother might be dead", something surrealistic for my opinion. Just talking in front of the child about his dead mother without even trying to speak in a low voice in order the child not to hear the conversation, felt a little bit strange.
However, there are some things that I liked too. For example, the story follows a pattern which makes the story really easy to understand. Also, I liked how the story goes around the figure of David but then it turns to be more focused on Maki and her child. Everything that happens in the film is really shocking, you don't actually expect all of the things to happen.
Whacked (1998)
Brilliant and disturbing
This is a really good short film in my opinion. The film starts with the sudden death of some people in the middle of the street and then it shows to us the daily life of a man who works in a golf and whose car is being always hitted by the balls, something that seems to stress him to high levels, so he decides to de-stress himself everyday after working. One of the best points of this film is that the story is told without any piece of dialogue.
Also, during the whole film, you just keep questioning everything all the time as it is kind of difficult to guess what is going on in the film, but I would say that it is just magnific how everything is solved little by little, even making you forget about the dead people on the street until the end of the film when you realize what is going on and everything makes sense. However, during all the film everything is kind of disturbing, like the face of the main character, the sounds of the balls, the people dying...
Being a five minutes ling film and being able to tell this story in this short time is really amazing to me and again, without a piece of dialogue. This film made me think how much we are focused on dialogue when we watch a film that when we see a movie with no words, it feels strange to us. This was really brilliant.
Fish Out of Water (2005)
Funny and aesthetically pleasing
I really liked this film, it has so many good points and metaphors really well used in my opinion. This short film is about a man who decides to cross a river by boat every day to avoid the traffic jam on the road to go to work. However, one day his way is threatened by a woman who starts to go with him on the boat and starts spreading the news, so everyone want to go by boat instead of car until the day when the main character decides to change everything, avoiding again all the people.
What I liked from this film is that all the story is told without any dialogue. The acting is also really good and expressive, so you can know what is going on or what people feel by looking at their actions or faces. I really loved the character of the blond woman. This woman is one of the most expressive and important characters of the story. She works like the main source of conflict and also, her appearance seems to be from the typical evil character from any film, so it is easy to recognize and to figure out what is going on with her presence in the story.
The other character that I found interesting was the fisher woman. I didn't like her attitude on the situation that the main character is living, but at some point you can realize that she works like a mirror of the main character's mood and thoughts. However, as it is kind of a simple story, even if she is not there, is easy to realize what is the character mood or what is he thinking about the issue. Also, I didn't the end of the film, but I won't say anything in order not to spoil it.
Father and Daughter (2000)
A really beautiful story
I really liked this short, it was so beautiful. the story is about a father and her daughter. They go to the shore one day and the father takes a boat for not returning again. However, his daughter goes every day of her life to the same place in order to see him someday. The storyline and how it is combined with the music was perfect. The music fits so well each stage of the daughter's life and also the actual seasons and the atmosphere of the narrative.
Other interesting thing to mention is the way the film speaks about the death. It was so touching but imaginative at the same time using that amount of metaphors to describe the death.
Despite everything I have said, the thing that I found the most wonderful about the film is that it is able to tell such a beautiful story without a piece of dialogue. Just watching at their movements and characters' expressions, listening to the music and sounds around the scenario, or just looking at the beautiful drawing, I was able to understand the whole story, even those metaphors talking about the death and making them really touching.
However, the film made me feel a little bit sad for the daughter as she spends almost all her life thinking about her father who is not going to come back anymore, and how she waists her youth thinking about the past and not realizing that she has more things to feel happy with, but just my opinion about the character.
