Alien (1979)
10/10
The Best Sci-Fi Horror movie out there
5 April 2023
Introduction: Released in 1979, Alien has become one of the most iconic and celebrated sci-fi horror films of all time. Directed by Ridley Scott and starring Sigourney Weaver, the movie has received critical acclaim and has become a cult classic. In this review, we will delve into why Alien is considered the best sci-fi horror movie.

Storyline: The movie follows the crew of the commercial spaceship Nostromo, who are on a mission to investigate a distress signal from an uncharted planet. They soon discover an alien creature that begins to wreak havoc on the ship, leading to a terrifying fight for survival.

Cinematography and Sound: The use of cinematography and sound in Alien is exceptional. The movie's set design, including the iconic and claustrophobic spaceship, adds to the film's atmosphere and tension. The use of shadow and light is also used effectively to create suspense and build up to the terrifying scenes. The sound design, including the eerie and haunting score, heightens the film's tension and adds to the overall sense of dread.

Characters: The characters in Alien are well-developed and memorable. Sigourney Weaver's portrayal of Ripley is one of the most iconic and influential female protagonists in movie history. The supporting cast, including Tom Skerritt as Captain Dallas and Ian Holm as Ash, also deliver strong performances.

The Alien: The design of the alien creature is nothing short of remarkable. The monster's design by H. R. Giger is both grotesque and beautiful, and its practical effects hold up even by today's standards. The alien's unpredictability and the unknown nature of its motives add to the terror it brings to the movie.

Influence: Alien has influenced countless films and TV shows in the sci-fi horror genre, including John Carpenter's The Thing and Netflix's Stranger Things. The film's impact on pop culture is still felt today, and it has become a staple of the horror movie genre.

Conclusion: In conclusion, Alien is considered the best sci-fi horror movie for its exceptional storytelling, incredible cinematography and sound design, well-developed characters, iconic monster design, and lasting influence on the genre. The movie's intense and terrifying atmosphere leaves a lasting impression on the viewer and solidifies its place in cinema history.

Spiral (2021)
6/10
Far better than then last saw movies
15 June 2021
Detective Zeek (played by Chris Rock) and his prodigy partner (Max Minghella) discover the remains of a corpse in an underground tunnel which leads them to believe that is the work of a jigsaw copycat. They quickly find themselves in a bloodbath mess as more cops get killed by the minute. The clock is ticking and they need to find the identity of the killer before its too late.

As a huge fan of the saw series, I must admit spiral was a pleasant surprise for me. Chris Rock does a fantastic job as the damaged detective even though i am not a fan of his high pitched voice. The movie has the same premise as the saw movies and bares a huge resemblance to the first one. I can't say that it will blow your mind but it will entertain you. The murders are quite gruesome and some traps are brutally clever. The only low point for me is that is very predictable since you can find who the killer without too much effort because the hints were not subtle. Overall if you loved the saw movies then you will like spiral.

Rubber (2010)
4/10
Rather boring - Only if you want to burn some brain cells
12 March 2021
Not anything special can be said about it's plot. The movie is about a sociopathic tire that loves killing anything on its path either by running over or by exploding heads with its telekinetic powers. Th movie can be best summarised by its intro where a local sheriff points out that many things in great movies make no sense and just happen for no reason whatsoever. Since a movie like that can only be watched if you want to burn some cells we take it for granted that we cant take it seriously. Unfortunately there are not many laughs in Rubber and since this is a < silly movie it's main goal is at least to make you laugh with its silliness. It has some moments but overalls falls victim to the lack of the fun factor. The movie seems to exist just for no reason. I would rank it even lower but it deserves a 4 for its originality due to the fact that this is the only movie about a sociopathic tire that will kill anything in it's path.

Sabata (1969)
7/10
One of the best spaghetti westerns from Italy
12 March 2021
Skillful gunfighter, Sabata arrives in a small town in the west to quickly find that outlaws robbed the bank and stole 100.000$. He quickly tracks them down and delivers them to the local sheriff for the reward. He soon discovers that the robbers were hired by the bank owners and must team up with a beggar and a banjo player to fight them. Sabata is the first film of the Sabata trilogy and is easily one of the best westerns from Italy. It's characters are very memorable. Van Cleef portrays the anti hero Sabata perfectly who will do anything for money while the actor playing the beggar is surprisingly funny to this day. Sabata is action packed with a comedic style as in many spaghetti westerns of the era. The plot is decent and there are some twists to keep you entertained until the end. If you love westerns and you haven't seen this, then I definitely recommend it.

The Burrowers (2008)
6/10
Decent horror - western flick
12 March 2021
When a family goes missing, a band of experienced men set out to find and rescue them from the native Americans. However they quickly find out that the Indians have nothing to do with it as strange things start to occur. The movie has a mediocre plot and is overall a mixed bag. You might like or hate it. If you love the concept of a horror movie in a western theme then the burrowers might entertain you. It has a very slow pace and some find its ending weak but I find it to my liking. Don't expect a light movie in which redemption comes for our characters. This is a bleak movie that nothing goes right for the rescue party so expect a gloomy atmosphere and many deaths. Overall I enjoyed it and it should entertain the average person but don't expect something to stun you.

Italian cinema at its finest - A moving story
8 March 2021
When young boy named Michele plays with his friends at the fields during the summer in Italy, he makes a gripping discovery. He finds a hole in the ground where a boy name Filipo is kept prisoner for days. Michele isn't sure if he must tell about Filipo to his family or friends but he keeps visiting him every day to give him food and water. After days passed, Michele starts suspecting that something is wrong and must choose carefully what to do and say not to raise suspicions.

Io non ho paura is a moving film with a touching story about how innocent we used to be. Throughout the film you can feel the boy's compassion towards the other kid and the frustration he has about what to do and think. He doesn't know exactly what is happening since he is young and innocent but in the back of his mind he can sense something is wrong. The movie quickly catches your attention with the amazing scenery and gripping story. You want this kid to succeed in his mission and you keep rooting for him until the end. If you haven't watch it go ahead and do it, highly recommended.

Dreamcatcher (2021)
3/10
A writing mess
8 March 2021
Warning: Spoilers
When two sisters and their friends reunite, they go out for clubbing to have some fun. After hours of clubbing Pierce disappears after following Travis, a dj called Dreamcatcher in his room. As soon as her friends and her sister find her , Pierce commits suicide in front of them. Travis' manager decides to pay them in order to keep their mouths shut about the accident to avoid any damage to her client career. Unfortunately more people are starting to die and they start to suspect that something is wrong. I got to say from the start that dreamcatcher is a writing mess. At first It might seem your average hack and slash movie to pass the time but it quickly becomes a train wreck. Without spoiling too much after some time it looks like the writers didn't know what to do with the film and decide to do whatever. The only good point in the film i could find is that some characters are smart and well developed which is very unusual for a film like this. Unfortunately that alone cannot save this disaster from doom since the script looks like it was written by people on various substances. Not recommended.

Mafia! (1998)

Comedy that still holds up to this day - Lloyd Bridges is insanely funny
8 March 2021
When young and clumsy Vincenzo Cortino delivers a package to a drug dealer for her father he sees something that he shouldn't. In order to save Vincenzo from his enemies, his family and friends sent him to America where he slowly builds his mafia empire. Unfortunately for him, the other families and old enemies make an attempt to kill him at his son's wedding. The younger son, Anthony must take things into his own hands and seek revenge. Mafia is a classic slapstick comedy that will keep you entertain for an afternoon watch. It is a parody of many famous films such Jurassic park, jaws, Scarface but mainly godfather. Lloyd Bridges is pure gold in this film as in his previous work ( if you haven't seen airplane go and watch it) while his sons Anthony and Joe played by Jay Mohr and Billy Burke are hilarious. There are many memorable scenes that will make you burst in tears from laughing and if you love silly comedies that don't take life too seriously then you will love this one.

Not bad, but could have been better
7 March 2021
Alien versus predator was bound to happen and even back in 2004 its production wasn't a surprise with the 2 famous sci fi - horror francizes spawning lots of movie sequels and video games. When a ancient pyramid is discovered deep under the ice in Antartica a crew of scientists and specialists are tasked to investigate. As you expect from these kind of movies, nothing go as planned and the team is caught between the fight of the two alien species. The script is nothing special and has many holes but it gets the job done which is to provide a reason for the two creatures to fight each other while getting many people you don't care about killed. I must say the encounters between the predator and the alien are very well done and you will find what you are looking for if you are a fan. AVP is well paced and as soon as the action starts taking place you will enjoy it. The main problem of the film is that it lacks substance and you can see clearly that everything happens just to see the two creatures fight. Overall AVP is not a bad movie and it is a decent effort to please the hardcore fans and entertain the average sci fi horror fan along the way. Just try not to take the plot too seriously.

Maigret: Maigret Sets a Trap (2016)
Season 1, Episode 1
7/10
Rowan Atkinson is pure gold
2 March 2021
In 1955 a serial killer has killed five women in the past 6 months in Montmatre. The locals are scared and cant sleep at nights until Maigret, the detective assigned on the case finds the man responsible for the murders. After months without a lead, the officials pressure Maigret to catch the killer as soon as possible or he will be replaced. The famous detective must act fast and the clock is ticking... First of all I must say I am not familiar with Maigret stories so i am not biased towards the film in any way. Secondly, when I first saw that Rowan Atkinson is on a murder - mystery movie playing a more mature role than the usual comic ones, I was skeptical. Boy, I was wrong. Rowan Atkinson is surprisingly good at portraying a serious detective and is a delight to watch him from start to finish. The movie is entertaining to watch and will keep you interested till the end. It has many similarities with Jack the ripper and i must say the Parisian atmosphere is stunning. The movie isn't very complex since everything makes sense and it is very easy to follow. It is a simple who done it and why film that won't bore you with cheap distractions. If you love noir, mystery movies or you want to enjoy Rowan Atkinson in something different then Maigret sets a trap is highly recommended.

Wer (2013)
5/10
Entertaining low budget horror movie
1 March 2021
A family of 3 were camping in the woods in France when a tall. hairy manlike animal attacks them viciously, leaving no survivors. Just before Ms. Porter dies she reports that the hideous animal ate her husband and son right in front of her eyes. During the investigation, the local authorities concluded that a tall man living in the woods is responsible for the death of the Porter family. Defense attorney Kate Moore (AJ Cook) will do anything to defend her client's rights but the evidence is overwhelming and she starts having seconds thoughts. As a huge fan of horror movies i wanted to give this one a go. Wer is a very low budget movie and that becomes obvious from the very first minute of the film. I got to admit that I didn't like the first half of the movie. It seems to me that they weren't clear if they wanted to go with horror or trial genre with Wer, at least in the first part of the movie. The first 30 minutes will probably bore you with long conversations between the defense attorney and the inspector. There are also some news reports about the case that seem out of place. Leaving that aside the movie does a decent job even for a low budget film making you feel uncomfortable when watching Talon's scenes. I must say the actor that portrays him steals the show and even without special effects he seems very real and intimidating. The movie shines in the second part where the tone becomes darker, scarier and hopeless. The deaths are quite gory and the werewolf seems an unstoppable force of nature. The element of the werewolf infecting another one ads a nice touch to the movie. Overall Wer is a decent low budget horror movie that will entertain you for a chilled afternoon.

16 Blocks (2006)
5/10
16 blocks is an easy afternoon watch.
10 February 2021
Washed up cop Jack (played by Bruce Willis) doesn't enjoy his job or his life anymore and can't wait to retire. Just as he is getting ready to return home after a tiresome night, his boss gives him a seemingly easy assignment to pick up someone and get him to the court as he needs to testify on a case. When his passenger, Eddie (Yasiin Bey) is chilling in Jack's car, someone tries to kill him but Jack saves him at he last minute. He immediately understands that this not an easy task and that some people want Eddie dead. 16 blocks is your typical action movie starring Bruce Willis and the funny Yassin Bey, that somehow works and makes an easy watch for the afternoon or to kill some time. The whole movie is about Jack getting Eddie from point A to point B without dying. I love the fact that there is no super hero in this move. You can relate to Jack with his lows and highs easily without him getting over the top. It has enough action and twists to keep you interested just don't expect too much and you will enjoy it.

Shot Caller (2017)
7/10
One of the best prison movies with a gripping story
10 February 2021
Jacob is a respected family man who is at his peak of success with a great job and a beautiful wife with a son. Unfortunately things take a U-turn when he he is engaged in an accident with his car resulting in his best friend's death while driving under influence. In order to minimize his jail time he pleads guilty at court to serve 2 years in prison. He soon finds out that his problems have just begun and during his time he must make tough decisions in order to survive prison and protect the ones he loves. Shot caller is by far one of the best prison movies of all time. It is brutal yet entertaining with its raw style and dark tone. Don't expect a fairytale where everything will go as planned with a happy ending. Nicolaj Coster - Waldau from Game of Thrones does a remarkable job of making us believe that a family man can go rogue inside a prison. Direction is almost perfect going back and forth to what happened inside the prison and the reason behind Jacob's change of character. The movie is quite violent as you expect from a prison movie but it makes you think how far you would go to protect the ones you love. It has its flaws since in my opinion the move is way longer than it could have been and some characters decisions inside the jail seem excessive but I guess otherwise we wouldn't have a movie. Overall the movie is one of the best of 2017 and if you love crime movies about prisons then this is an absolute watch.

Memento - alike BIGTS makes a decent watch for the weekend
8 February 2021
Christine (Nicole Kidman) suffers from anterograde amnesia meaning that she cannot form any new memories since an accident that she had in the past. Every day she wakes up next to her husband (Colin Firth) having no memory of what happened yesterday or the day before. Each day her husband has to remind her of her condition since she cannot make sense of anything. Christine gets really upset since she doesn't remember him or the accident. The situation gets more frustrating after she receives a strange call from a psychiatrist Dr.Nasch (Mark Strong) who explains her that she is seeing him for months for help and it is normal to not remember him. Christine finds out that she cannot trust anyone and she must plan her moves cleverly to keep record of each day passing in order to find out what happened to her. Before I go to sleep might seem a very interesting idea at first playing with the short memory loss thingy but it is no new ground. Christopher Nolan was the first director that flirted with the condition with his amazing movie, Memento. Before I go to sleep comes not even close to his masterpiece but that doesn't mean you won't find it interesting. The whole movie is about guessing who is lying and there are a couple of twists to keep you interested. There are not many characters so you will change your opinion a dozen times of who is the guilty party until the end of the movie. The acting is top notch especially Christine's husband Ben played by Colin Firth. Unfortunately the movie falls flat at the end because it raises your expectations for something good but it just doesn't deliver. However before I go to sleep will keep you interested from start to finish thus making it decent watch for the weekend. If you loved this movie then watch Memento which is superior in every way.

Virus (1999)
5/10
Terminator meets alien in a mediocre horror -action movie.
8 February 2021
Washed up captain of Sea Star, Robert Everton( played by Donald Sutherland) and his crew of 5 fail to transport their cargo due to a big storm that leaves their ship heavily damaged. They find hope in a high-tech Russian ship that seems abandoned at first. They decide to board the ship and start looking for any crew members. Unfortunately things don't go as planned and they soon find out that they are not alone. Virus is based on a dark horse fiction novel baring the same title. The movie tries a lot to recreate the atmosphere of the movie alien by isolating people with a dangerous extraterrestrial force. The alien itself has no physical form which is a new touch at least for the movie era and consists mainly of electric energy. So in order to survive on the ship it needs to live inside electric devices or create hybrid humanoids with the flesh from the crew. The movie has some gory scenes but it can't be classified as true horror genre since the alien takes the form of robots meaning it bares more resemblance to an action movie like terminator rather than alien. Jamie Lee Curtis plays the role of the good protagonist while William Baldwin does a mediocre job as the hero who tries to save the girl from harm. Once again Donald Sutherland steals the show as a washed up captain who sees an opportunity to make a fortune while your typical black guy in a horror movie, Richie played by Sherman Augustus is the smartest and funniest character by far. Virus doesn't deserve all the bad reputation it has gotten over the years but make no mistake it is not gold stuff also. Some characters exist just to die easily with no background story making us not care at all. One thing that bugged me is that one character's decision near the end of the film makes no sense at all. I must say the special effects of the humanoid- robots get the job done and are surprisingly good for a 1995 movie. Overall virus won't bore you or leave you unsatisfied. It has a semi-decent plot for a horror movie and it's the closer you can to a good alien movie on a ship. It has its flaws but It makes for an easy watch if you are bored or have some time to waste.
