In my opinion the critics are off the mark..I LOVE BVS...Here is why:
26 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Admittedly I have been a fan of DC Comics for nearly 40 years so..you might think i'm biased but i'm not..in that I don't think DC walks on water. In fact...I thought Man Of Steel was actually one of the top 5 worst Superhero films I had ever seen. I am shocked however, to see how critics are panning Dawn Of Justice so much. I'll give minor spoilers at the end of this review to the two flaws I found with this excellent film. However..let me start spoiler free:

First..it needs to be said that Ben Affleck is probably the best live action Bruce Wayne we have ever had. When Affleck was first announced, I, like so many others had serious doubts..but I was very wrong. He turns in a performance worthy of the best Batman comics in history. I won't get into comparing him to past actors to have played the role, or this review will end up being far too long. I'll just say..if you have read any Batman Comics..not just the Frank Miller story that the film seems loosely based on...Ben Affleck will make you very proud.

The returning cast from Man Of Steel give more of the same. Henry Cavill in conjunction with Zack Snyder seem to feel the need to make Superman as dark as Batman...a choice I will never understand but..Cavill does however have a few pitch perfect scenes that I will briefly address in spoilers later.

Jeremy Irons is great as Alfred, and I hope his role is expanded in future movies. Gal Gadot is absolutely perfect as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman. A character that has never been on the big screen in her 75 year Life..is again done proud. Gal is beautiful, classy, and tough..she will do amazing things in her solo film!

Another performance I found myself shocked to love was Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. This seemed liked terrible casting to me but...somehow it ended up working..really well. At some points this version of Lex can be downright scary. Which I much prefer to the campy criminal we saw with Gene Hackman or Kevin Spacey. Just wait until you see exactly how deranged this Lex can be! And by the way..just hearing a live action Batman talk about Lex or Metropolis...will have a true fan giddy with excitement! In summary before spoilers...Don't let critics sway you...SEE THE FILM...I'm sure you'll be glad you did!

Now...below are spoilers..regarding the best and worst parts of the film. If you haven't yet seen it..you have been warned:

There were just two flaws I found with the film...both of which were not the fault of the actors. One was a ridiculous dream sequence in the middle of the film..that has been eluded to in the trailers involving Batman..in the desert..shooting people. It is so misplaced and silly..that I have absolutely no idea why it is there. Batman using guns to kill..just looks ridiculous. Thankfully the scene is short and only a dream. The good part of it is..that it leads into the first of two cameos by The Flash...and it sets up who the Justice League Villain might be. Omega Symbol anyone???? The other flaw is that the final battle..no not the actual Batman/Superman fight..but the OTHER Fight is far too long. That was one of the biggest problems Snyder had with MOS...the final fight dragged on forever! Other than those two things the film is fabulous.

As I said earlier..Cavill who plays The Man From Uncle way better than he plays Superman has two standout scenes...where he gives Superman the sympathetic side he should have. The first is...a beautiful scene where he sees a vision of his dead earth father Jonathan Kent, while he is in the arctic. Cavill and Kevin Costners interplay was the only bright spot of MOS..and it is again on display here. The other great Superman scene is when he says two key words at the end of his fight with Batman..."Save Martha"! Those two words change everything between the two icons....and they give this version of Superman one of his best moments over 2 films! Again...see the film and judge for yourself but..I loved it!! I wish Zack Snyder didn't feel the need to be quite so artsy..with comic book heroes..and I hope he will be less so with JLA but it doesn't change all the good in the film..that makes it worth it!

This is the true Dawn of Justice!!

Bates Motel: Goodnight, Mother (2016)
Season 4, Episode 2
10/10
Best Episode Of The Entire Series so far!
22 March 2016
Wow! What Can I say? I have watched this show from day 1...and let me tell you...this is the best hour it has ever had! The two leads of the show..Vera Farmiga and Freddie Highmore, are what makes a good show great..and wisely the show chose to focus nearly the entire episode on just them...short of a few minutes.

Its not that I don't like the other characters, in fact the other two stars..Max and Olivia are fantastic...its just that the stories they are given are normally the weak point of the show. With this episode however..we get the best of the best!

I truly believe that if you are a fan of the classic Hitchcock film that the show is based on...this episode is a fantastic companion piece and prequel of sorts to the film.If you watch no other episode of the series...Watch this one!!

Supergirl (2015–2021)
10/10
Most Improved Show of the new season.
21 March 2016
After an admittedly very rough start, Supergirl has found its footing and now knows what it is..and isn't.

As of this writing..the last two episodes, 15 and 16..featuring Indigo and Red Kryptonite have been the two best episodes of the series.

Melissa Benoist clearly is fully committed to the role..which she has now fully grown in to. David Harewood and Chyler Leigh are excellent, as is Calista Flockhart as the iconic character of Cat Grant. If you have never seen the show, or gave up on it after its first few weak episodes...check out episodes 15 and 16...and if you love them as much as I did...skip the first 5 or 6...and then watch the rest of the season as well.

Also if you are a fan of The Flash on The CW...a cross network crossover is coming on March 28..which will see the two heroes team up.

Yes it took awhile but Supergirl has finally taken flight!

Billions (2016–2023)
10/10
Easily The Best New Show Of The Season!
21 March 2016
Billions has it all! Class, Style, Beauty, and best of all Brains.

The battle of wits between Chuck (Paul Giamatti), and Bobby (Damian Lewis) is the heart of the show...and both men are riveting to watch.

The other gem of the show is the fantastic and beautiful Maggie Siff as Chuck's wife Wendy, who just happens to be one of Bobby's oldest friends..not to mention..practically a co founder of Bobby's company. The sparks between Bobby and Wendy fly..but she is married to his greatest enemy. Lewis and Siff have such chemistry on screen...and Damian Lewis has an uncanny ability to make you root for him, no matter what he is playing. Be it a Wrongly Imprisoned cop on the equally excellent short lived show called Life, or the potential villain on Homeland..the man just has incredible talent..and with Bobby "Axe" Axelrod...it is no different. You never want to see one man win..because the Clash Of these two Titans is just too much fun!!

Nobel Son (2007)
10/10
Still Current and Cool in 2016...Outside of Harry Potter..my favorite Alan Rickman Character!
21 March 2016
Recently, the loss of Alan Rickman reminded me of how perfect he was in this film, and as a result, how much I love the film.

If you like movies that continually surprise you with twists and turns, you will love every part of Nobel Son. Though the film was released nearly a decade ago, if it came out this week..it would feel brand new. It has high tech story telling, an edgy and cool soundtrack, and terrific performances from its ensemble cast...one of those being the always cool Eliza Dushku. You would also be hard pressed to find anything like what I consider to be the most memorable scene of the film..which involves a shopping mall and a car. Once you see the scene i'm referencing..you'll see what makes this a must watch film!

As a side note...if you were ever a fan of a short lived TV Show called October Road..you'll be in for a reunion of sorts, with two of its stars Bryan Greenberg and Lindy Booth appearing in the film.

Bottom Line..If you haven't seen it..give it a try, if you have..try it again. It makes you remember the great talent we lost this year, but in many ways it also feels like it always had an eye on the future!

Allegiant (2016)
6/10
Better than the second, nowhere near as good as the first!
20 March 2016
I so wanted to love this movie. I particularly love Woodley and Teller. The movie they did together called The Spectacular Now was nothing short of...Spectacular. But, the Divergent Series started so strong, then took a big tumble with Insurgent, and barely recovered here.

By the third act of the film..I began to at least hope for a thrilling ending. While I won't spoil anything i'll simply say, I was far less than thrilled. The acting was fine, and the addition of Jeff Daniels was fun but, having never read the books, I found the film to be choppy and uneven. Had so much been cut from the book, to make room for the final film, that it was obvious on screen? Was the narrative just not there? I don't know..all I can do is hope that the final film takes a cue from the final Harry Potter, or the final Hobbit, and uses what works..to conclude an uneven series that has so much talent at its very fingertips!

Two Lovers (2008)
10/10
Still as of 2016, One of my favorite films of the last 16 years
20 March 2016
Oh how I wish this film were as universally loved as it should be. Easily the best work of Joaquin Phoenix or Gwenyth Paltrow's career to date, this film is simply fantastic.

The restaurant scene using Henry Mancini's Lujon as background music, is one of my favorite film scenes of all time. So many layers in a 3 person conversation...simply brilliant. The small things, the subtle nuance of Leonard ordering a Brandy Alexander, then being asked if he'd like a real straw, or Blatt asking Leonard about a pizza shop he recalls from the area where Leonard lives...perfect! If you've never seen it..Give it a try! You just may find yourself transfixed!!

Daredevil (2015–2018)

Daredevil Season 2 Does the impossible, in being even better than the first!!
20 March 2016
As a fan of All Comic Boooks for nearly 40 years, I was extremely excited when Netflix began Daredevil. I LOVED the first season particularly because of the way both Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk were portrayed. Finally, it was the Murdock and Fisk that I had grown up with! Then came Jessica Jones. A lower tier Marvel Character who is now on the A List, thanks to a stellar First Season!

Now comes the Second Season of Daredevil and it is the best yet. It is not a spoiler to say that the second season includes Elektra and The Punisher. Elodie Yung plays Elektra perfectly, hitting every level of pathos. Brutal and Dangerous when it is called for but under the surface is a heroic and even sympathetic warrior. John Bernthal brings to Frank Castle aka The Punisher, what always should have been there. Rage, with a heroism buried beneath. Forget Thomas Jane or even Ray Stevenson (who gave his best to what he was given), finally we have The defining Punisher!

I can't say enough about the other stand out performances..but once again Matt, Foggy, and Karen are pitch perfect. The twist at the end of Episode 8 will blow you away, and the verbal confrontation between two characters in Episode 10 is Emmy Worthy!! If I had but one complaint it would be lighting. When Daredevil is fighting battles at night, i'd like to be able to actually see them! This was a problem in Season 1 as well..but it is minor when balanced with the overall quality of the show! Bring on The Defenders..because The Man Without Fear is more than ready!! Season 2 of Daredevil brings the comics to life and is the best TV offering Marvel has given us yet!

Pacific Rim (2013)
10/10
The ULTIMATE Summer Movie! A Master Class in Film Making!
14 July 2013
What can I say about Pacific Rim? It is everything that a Sci/fi-Action Film fan could ask for. Even fans of the classic Godzilla VS. Films will be beyond satisfied. The CGI is fantastic, The Plot (Yes there is quite an intricate one) is methodical, The homage to every part of so called nerd culture is there for the taking, but most importantly...it is director Guillermo Del Toro's best work to date..along with being a master class in making the perfect summer blockbuster.

It is so hard to talk about without giving spoilers so..i'll just say this...No matter if you are a casual or hardcore film fan..Don't miss Pacific Rim! Films like this do not come along very often!!
