House of the Dragon: The Heirs of the Dragon (2022)
What a powerful start.
I never thought the day would come when my game of thrones love would be revitalized. I loved everything about this first episode. The cinematography, the music, the dialogue the world-building. It gets you right back into the feel of peak of thrones.
To be fair, at first, my hype levels were relatively low. I think I speak for many of us when I say that the finale of game of thrones ruined the excitement of future projects for the franchise.
But then the first real trailer was revealed, and I felt immediately hooked. HBO just does not mess around, they don't do things in a half-assed way.
So looking forward to the next episodes. The only minor thing I noticed is that the dragon cg felt a bit lower quality when compared to game of thrones? Might just be my imagination though.. everything else looked flawless.
The Walking Dead: No Other Way (2022)
Exceptional directing,
Not much I need to say, but this episode was directly phenomenally. Goes to show how far solid directing can go, yea the plot was good as well lets not ignore that, but the stellar directing and cinematography is what made this episode shine. Music and acting was spot on as well.
Just an overall great episode.
The Walking Dead: On the Inside (2021)
Great EP, amazing cinematography and use of sound.
Each episode is a continuing surprise. I can't stop being amazed at how good this season is.
Almost every episode so far gave me a genuine "wow" feeling. This is actual good television right now.
What's the big difference? Did AMC finally invest into some genuine good writers and directors? I do not know... but please let them stay!
This episode was shot so damn well. Not just the cinematography, but also the use of sound was just incredible.
I really liked the performances of the actors as well.
I felt genuine tension in this episode. Not just Connies, but also Daryls plot line in this episode were quite compelling. I had a feeling that I haven't had in quite some time, especially when it comes to the walking dead.
It's the genuine feel of not knowing, but also wanting to know what is going to happen next. I was immersed.
I wasn't sure if Connie was going to survive, neither was I for certain what Daryl's next action was going to be.
A super super good episode.
The Walking Dead: Rendition (2021)
Very good world and character building.
Oh boy the soundtrack of the Pope is incredible. Bear McCreary is a legend.
Really enjoyed the introduction of the reapers and their leader. The Pope seems like a competent actor. Really liked this.
This season has been very very solid so far. Can't believe I'm actually looking forward to walking dead episodes again. Feels so good. Lets keep this up!
The Walking Dead: Hunted (2021)
Mostly very solid, with some issues.
I absolutely enjoy the current plot line, everyones starving, people are desperate, people are losing their lives, ideologies clash. It does feel like old Walking Dead in some ways. The episodes are well shot and the soundtrack is as good as always.
I do have some issues with some of the directional choices though.
Example: The episode starts off with the ambush of the villains, we get some intense action, it almost feels like absolute annihilation. People get injured and die left and right.
Now.. they kill off some one episode characters who nobody really cares about but at least we have some stakes at our hands. It's not like season 8 where people are at actual warfare with fully automated guns but nobody ever really hits a shot.
The issues I'm having is in some of these more abrupt cuts. Before the opening starts playing we see Maggie face to face with one of the bad guys, she throws this weapon thingy at him and disappears like a ghost, the intro starts playing and a couple of minutes later its daytime and Maggie escaped.
It's thing like that, that just scream improper story telling. I feel like they ran out of ideas how to effectively execute the end of the battle and the start of the escape. They just skip the entire part. The same applies to the horse chasing scene with carol and the others. They chase the horses, the camera cuts and all of the horses are in the paddock. It might be minor things to others but these kinds of things seem and feel lazy to me.
Other minors things like characters winning unrealistic fights. Maggie lying on the ground while a 6ft+ chad is pressing his sword against her, she just takes off one of her hands from the sword to reach a glass bottle and the guy still couldn't overpower her.
The Walking Dead also kind of forgot how to build up new characters and actually make them likeable characters that you care about in some way or the other. Which is a shame since that was one of the strengths in earlier seasons. Constantly having new valuable characters flood in to add to the group or even to the antagonist groups.
But with all the negatives out of the way. The first 3 episodes of the final season seem to be promising, I enjoy the atmosphere and I like where it potentially could go. This has major potential and with good writers on board in some episodes, we could see some incredible stuff.
The Walking Dead: Acheron: Part I (2021)
A decent start.
This was nowhere near of a 10 out of 10 like so many reviewer make it out to be, but it was a good start for nowadays walking dead standards.
The Eugene plot line remains quite uninteresting, the first few minutes of the episode where they tried to build an intense atmosphere with complete silence didn't do it for me. But the train station sections and the drama between Negan and the group was cool.
Maggie is obviously not dead. It's these moments where you really feel like Walking Dead has lost most of it's tension. That is just my opinion but I didn't feel any danger whether it was with the scene in the first few minutes or the one in the last few minutes.
All in all a good episode but nothing too crazy. Still excited for this final season. Don't fk it up please!
The Walking Dead: Here's Negan (2021)
Why can't it always be like this?
There is not a doubt in my mind that The Walking Dead is the most inconsistent show I have ever seen.
How does a show vary from awful to great so many times in one single season?
The last 2 episodes have been objectively the two worst episodes the series has ever seen. Now this episode comes along with genuine heart-wrenching performances, stellar writing and beautiful directing. How? I find myself profoundly dumbfounded as to how the quality of this show can alter this much.
This episode's writing was on par with the old walking dead. And not many episodes since season 6 managed to reach that level.
Dear God I just hope that they somehow manage to go out with a banger in the last season.
The Walking Dead: Squeeze (2020)
One of the worst written episodes ever.
Seeing all these positive reviews leaves me in absolute state of awe.
This episode was one of the worst written and directed episodes I have ever seen. Absolutely infuriating writing. So many scenes in this episode that literally made me feel angry. How do they manage to make such an intense scenario feel absolutely underwhelming I do not know. The whole Mine looked and felt so fake. The escape from the horde scene at the beginning made me laugh. It looked like kids playing "the floor is lava" So nice of the walkers to be so docile.
They absolutely assassinated Carol's character. You cannot justify her actions solely on the reason that her boy was killed. Every. Single. Action. Of. Hers. Is absolutely frustrating to watch. You cannot even sympathize with them. It is just plain nonsense in these last couple of episodes, but this dynamite scene just topped the charts of absolute dumbness. Daryl tries so freaking hard to save her character but it's of no use.
Just kill Carol at this point. She went from being a strong lovable, dependable person to someone that doesn't do anything but lie and act out stupid irrational ideas.
People say that this episode was thrilling and intense. I didn't feel any of it. The only thing that surprised me is that Jerry didn't die in all this. Since when are walkers chewing on shoes instead of biting his leg?
I couldn't care less for Magna. She has been an annoying character ever since she came onto the show. But don't you kill off Connie like that. She is one of the only new characters that I genuinely like. Dying in such an awfully written way wouldn't be justice.
Vikings: The Last Act (2020)
Finally made it to the finishing line.
The deaths of Ivar and Harald were absolutely meaningless and not emotionally gripping at all. Not only did they die by the hands of nobodies, their deaths also made no sense what so ever. The writing has become so incredibly lazy. The entire final battle between the vikings and wessex felt so incredibly contrived. What the hell was the point in all that? Ivar just saying fk it im done with this just kill me. It had absolutely zero build up no character building nothing. It just existed to give us a "fancy" battle at the end of the show.
I'm positively surprised that they were able to put out at least 1 good episode in the entire 6th season which was bjorn's death. That episode delivered on so many fronts. From the writing to the directing. His death felt so impactful. That episode is miles and miles above the rest of the season. I thought "wow what an incredible opening to the 2nd cour of season six, maybe they can actually pull this off and give the show a proper ending". Yea that optimism was rather short lived. Everything collapsed the moment the episode was over. We went back to meaningless plot "developments" and uninteresting storylines. The story barely moved at a snails pace. It was hard to watch. Ubbe's character was shamelessly thrown away. What an absolute boring storyline. I just hate how they brought back floki for the final episode. That seemed so forced. It's like they thought "man we don't have the slightest idea how to give this show a proper ending, but let's bring back floki to distract from the awful and lazy writing." The entire rus arc was hilarious filler material. The show wouldn't have been any different without that arc. The way they ended so many of these characters like Oleg, Harald and Ivar without any satisfaction and proper conclusion was just mind boggling. Don't even get me started on the kattegat conclusion. Ingrid on the throne? What the..
Anyways I'm happy that the show is finally over. Let me say this.. When Vikings was good, it was great. But most of the show, especially after ragnar's death was just so mediocre. Season 5 and 6 had like 2 or 3 really good episodes. That's not even an exaggeration.
