The Batman (2022)
The Definitive Batman Movie!
For me this is the definitive Batman movie and the best batman movie to put on film! From the cinematography to the story to the acting and all things in between you could see the hard work put in by Reeves and his crew!
Robert Pattinson includes so much subtlety in his acting chops that it adds so much dimension to the scene which he is in! He accurately puts across the image of an orphan recluse who wants to say so much but is not able to!
Penguin, Catwoman and Riddler were amazing and unique in their own way plus there were so many other characters with fully fleshed out characters and story arcs.
This is a three-hour long movie which allowed Reeves to do long takes and let us stay within the room with these amazing characters allowing us to soak in all the tension and world-building because of which the movie may seem a bit slow but there is always twist or an amazing scene waiting around the corner to up the ante.
This is an amazing Batman Universe that Matt Reeves has created and I can't wait to see more of it! I still think The Dark Knight is the better movie but this is definitely a better "Batman" movie!
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Worthy of the hype!
Lately, there have been many superhero movies and TV shows releasing with varied tone, style and stories from Joker to Shazam to Infinity Wars to WandaVision. Each one offers something unique, a different style, a different tone or maybe a completely different take but when we talk about setting up a grandiose universe with mythical backstory, epic fights, cool-looking visuals and larger-than-life characters, then Zack Snyder's Justice League take the cake. Don't get me wrong, Infinity War was epic with a vast amount of comic book characters but watching Justice League took me straight away to my childhood days when I watched Justice League Unlimited and read comic books. The way Zack perceives and visualizes DC characters is too epic and looks too cool, like they have been ripped straight from the comic books. You may or may not like the movie but in no way can you say his movie direction is bland or boring.
Coming to the movie itself, there was a lot I loved about this movie. Each of the characters are fleshed out, have a motive and towards the end you can see have changed in some way or the other during the course of the movie. Flash and Cyborg have a much more meatier role in this movie which expands on their backstories and make them much more interesting. Steppenwolf also is not a one-tone villain in this movie and has been given a motive and backstory. The rest of the leagues have extended roles as well, which was interesting to watch. The movie has done a much better job at explaining the plot points than the version released in 2017. Gone are the stupid and immature jokes and replaced by much more organic back and forth between characters, I loved the interaction between Diana and Alfred. The action scenes are much superior and have more weight to them, and they are not vastly different from the 2017 one but with a few added scenes and the way they were edited made all the difference. I also loved the inclusion of characters like Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Deathstroke, Darkseid, Joker (still not sold on Leto's portrayal) and Mera, who had a significantly smaller role or a cameo but helped in making it feel like we exist in a massive universe with a lot of diversity and history just like comic books.
There were a few things that I didn't like as well. For starters, the background score is something that DC has been consistently good at, but here it was either generic or bad. I wasn't a fan of Wonder Woman score in this one, Flash and Superman were the only ones I liked, but Superman's score was taken from Man of Steel. Joker is still a big no from me, he is way over the top, and at least for me he is not able to sell it either. Now coming to the run time, I don't mind a four-hour cut but it makes you wonder will big studios be ever open to such 4-hour movies and if not, why to make it that way from the inception and not a 2-3 hour two-part movie.
All things considered, I cannot be happier that not only Zack got to complete his movie, but we were treated with a good version of Justice League. I am so much more excited to see where this universe takes us next and cannot wait for Justice League 2 and Man of Steel 2 if they ever happen.
Paatal Lok (2020)
Very well crafted Tv series!
Loved the series! It is very well produced and directed. So good to see that all aspect of the series was done with passion and dedication and it shows. The finely crafted story, the acting and the script sets it apart from the other Indian OTT series. I would recommend this to everyone.
A Quiet Place (2018)
Very Innovative!
One of the most innovative horror movie of recent times, It really put me on the edge of my seat. John Krasinski did a really great job in making this movie immersive, even some random sound during the movie will make you scared. I had a few nitpicks here and there about the characters but nothing significant.
I must say this is the most scared I have ever been in a horror movie so job well done, can't wait for part 2.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Original, Funny and Exciting
Birds of Prey continues DC winning streak and cementing DC and WB as movie studios allowing directors to bring their own vision to the table and going all out. This movie could easily have been PG-13 minus a few violent fight scenes but the fact that the studio didn't bother to alter them to PG-13 is awesome. Now coming to the movie I liked for the most part and was conflicted when it comes to a few areas.
The movie can be called a sequel to Suicide Squad which focuses on Harley Quinn after she broke up with the Joker. Now why the movie is called Birds of Prey I don't know because Harley Quinn is definitely the front and centre and the other characters shows up from time to time and team up towards the end. The movie is told completely through Harley Quinn perspective and is narrated by her thus the sequences of event that happened in the movie are a little out of sequence showing the chaos in her mind, It shows very well the chaos in Harley Quinn's mind but I think kills the excitement and build-up of a few scenes. The comedy is very quirky and organic which I love in contrast to the one forced upon. The action scenes are very well done and are exciting except for the last action sequence, It didn't do much for me and I was feeling bored towards the end of the movie.
The cinematography was great and some sequence really popped, the soundtrack was great as well.
The actors here have done a phenomenal job especially Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ewan Mcgregor and Chris Messina.
Margot Robbie is the definitive Harley Quinn and each of her sequences lifted the movie. Ewan did a great job although I wished I had seen something more from the character than we got. Huntress was an interesting character but we didn't get much in this movie and Victor Zsasz was menacing.
In all I really liked the movie except maybe the last 20 minutes, I am excited to see Harley Quinn and Birds of Prey in future movies.
1917 (2019)
Technical Masterpiece!!
While watching this movie I was on the edge of my seat, I had goosebumps, I was speechless about the hauntingly beautiful cinematography!
What Roger Deakins was able to pull off was incredible and there is no doubt that he is best in the business. My eyes were wide open and I was just amazed at how beautiful the cinematography was in Écoust.
The soundtrack was subtle but amazing and picked up when needed too putting the audience on the edge of their seats.
This is the first movie by Sam Mendes I have watched and will be definitely be checking out more of his movies. He did an amazing job of making the movie without any cuts it really helped you to experience the events of the movie and makes you feel the panic, tragedy and the adrenaline rush along with the characters.
This movie checked all the boxes in my list and is one of my favourite movie all time!
A must watch for all.
The Lighthouse (2019)
Art.
I loved the cinematography of this movie(It is one of the most beautiful movie I have ever seen)!
Robert Pattinson and William Dafoe gave a spectacular performance again one of the best performance I have ever seen!
I was very intrigued till the first hour of the movie but in the last 45 minutes I was a bit confused as to what was going on(maybe I will appreciate the later half better on my second watch)
The sound editing and soundtrack are great as well.
The movie is surprisingly humorous at times which I wasn't expecting!
Definitely a must-watch movies like these don't get made very often.
Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
The best DCAU movie!
The most definitive version of Batman. Loved the movie, an original story with characters done right, nice twist and very well-paced.
This movie explores how two adults react to similar trauma differently and cope with it leading to great sacrifices, Such complex storylines, characters and great scripts are hard to come by even in live-action movies. kudos to the film-maker for such a great representation of characters and making such a complex animated movie.
DCAU right now is doing good but I wish they make more movies like this again!
Shazam! (2019)
Lighthearted superhero movie done right!
Superhero movies have become massive with their worldwide appeal guaranteeing a upward of 500M $ earning worldwide and with such huge box-office the stakes and the scale of these movies has also gone massive - Thanos wiped out the half the universe , Aquaman called out all the ocean life to unite the seven seas whereas Wonder Woman single-handedly put a stop to world war I which is great but I miss the charm of old self contained movie where stakes were world ending only to the protagonist itself which I think made the story more personal and made the stakes have move emotional depth in them. One very good example being Raimi's Spiderman trilogy, Peter Parker was relatable so were the people he cared for and later on in the movie when the stakes where high we felt the emotional depth of losing a loved one. In that regards Shazam is very similar where the stakes were high for the main characters of the movie and by this it was able to tell us a very personal, character centric story with family values at heart.
Shazam is a superhero movie where action was never the main priority of the movie , before the word "Shazam" are first spoken we are well versed with Billy Batson (Shazam alter ego), Freddy( Billy Foster brother) , the rest of foster family and the villain. It may be called a slow start by some but what it does is that later on in the movie when these character makes a huge decision or anyone of them is in peril you feel the emotional impact too as the viewer. The actors were very well casted especially the character of Freddy, Billy Batson and Shazam who are played by Jack Dylan Grazer, Asher Angel and Zachary Levi respectively. Jack stole the show in every scene he was in , Asher successfully bought depth where it was needed and Zachary played a 14 year old like a 14 year old and not some adult acting stupid and weird. The villain played by Mark Strong is also set up a little bit to provide contrast to the protagonist. There was nothing special about him other than providing the stage for protagonist to grow as a character which is okay for an origin movie.
The Movie was directed by David F. Sandberg who is a huge inspiration for young film-makers, he only had a Youtube channel few years ago and now he has directed 3 Hollywood movies. I liked his direction for the most part especially how he was able to tell a great story with developed characters and he also managed to inject some horror elements ( his usual genre style) which were great although I think the actions scene could have been better like in final battle slow motions were used unnecessarily . The final battle also seemed a tad bit longer than it had to be, although it was able to drive home the point of true meaning a family successfully which was the whole point anyway.
I think the cinematography was very basic and didn't worked for me and the soundtrack was nothing special too which were strong suit of previous DC movies.
Having said that Shazam delivered in most of the areas like characters, story and humor and never in its 2hr 12min run time it made me bored, although I wished the cinematography and soundtrack were a bit better. Ultimately I think this movie was not about saying "Shazam" but what it means to say the word "Shazam!".
Joker (2019)
Thought-Provoking Masterpiece!
Joker is a drama movie in the vein of movies like Taxi-Driver and King of Comedy, It is a horror movie without any jump-scares or any other horror movie tropes and it is a comic-book origin movie about the most notorious and iconic villain. This movie will make you uncomfortable very often but ultimately it will force upon you some difficult questions that most movies shy away from asking. This is one of the few comic-book movies which will force you to think for hours after you have seen it.
Joker is a movie about Arthur Fleck (played brilliantly by "Joaquin Phoneix") who had some psychopathic tendencies but due to deteriorating conditions of Gotham and certain events that took place in the span of the movie leads him to lose it completely and become the villain we all know as Joker. The movie in its 2-hour runtime focuses completely on Arthur Fleck and shows his descent into becoming the joker and that journey is very well showcased, sometimes it is so realistic that some might consider it almost horror-like. The main credit goes to Joaquin Phoneix for such brilliant acting definitely Oscar-worthy, he is the main reason that the journey is believable you may feel bad for the character but you will also be able to feel the darkness deep inside which endorse his actions, the darkness which is slowly unravelled throughout the span of the movie. The rest of the supporting casts were great as well especially Robert De Niro.
The movie is directed by Todd Philips who before this had only directed movies like Hangover and Due date. This movie was a great departure from his usual type of movies but he pulled it off, you could tell he is a big Scorsese fan as this movie is heavily inspired by Taxi Driver. Like Taxi Driver this movie is a bit of a slow burner and slowly picks up the pace which really helps in understanding the character a lot better especially since this movie was a character study. As the descent into madness started so does the pacing of the movie.
The cinematography was very beautiful, the tone of the movie really helped in showcasing the deteriorating Gotham and characters. The soundtrack of the movie was also very good again I think it was very similar to Taxi Driver, It wasn't omnipresent, though when played it increased the tension very easily.
I am really glad that a movie like this exists. When comic-book movies are so saturated it is important that we have directors and actors who take risks like these. Projects like these (if successful) could break the monotony that has shrouded the comic-book genre. You may not end up liking the movie but that should not stop you from recognising it for its uniqueness and its bold take. Having said that I really loved this movie to bits and would love to see it again and again for its mesmerising performances, beautiful cinematography, lovely score and especially for its unique take.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
A satisfying culmination of 22 movies and 10 years of a superhero franchise!
Avengers: Endgame is culmination of 22 movies which is something not many movie franchise can brag about but this also means that Endgame had a huge responsibility to carry on its shoulder. It had to bring closure to multiple character arc, ignite the fire for new ones to come and also deliver a coherent and meaningful story at the same time. There were a few snags but Russo brothers were mostly able to deliver on each of those expectation and gave us a cinematic extravaganza that will go down history as one of the most significant Hollywood event to take place in recent times.
This movie is a love letter to past 10 years of MCU from including multitude of past movie references to including its many type of signature humor, action scenes and shooting styles.
This movie had almost all the main cast from its previous 22 movies and each of one them gave their best in terms of acting especially the main avengers, this was one the best performance we have seen from Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Junior, Chris Evans, Paul Rudd and Jeremy Renner . I liked some of the direction choices made by Russo brothers and disliked the others, In a movie populated with so many characters they were able to do the balancing act just right, the emotional scene had impact and the humor scene made me laugh and most (not all) main character got the screen time they needed. Iron-Man and Ant-Man are really the highlights they bring in a lot a humanising elements to the movie.
By the end the director were able to tell a story with a satisfying end to many of the superheroes arc who have inspired young and adults alike for the past 10 years and gave way to new superheroes to inspire next generation of kids.
There are consequences of having such large scale movie and it showed like there were lot of character development that happened behind the camera -
Hulk and Bruce Banner were never comfortable in each other skin and this is a theme going on since Avengers 1 but now we jumped directly to the conclusion which I think will leave Hulk fans a little disappointed
A lot of panic and menace which may happen after half the population disappears was never shown through a civilian perspective which would have given a more emotional gravitas to the situation.
Captain Marvel's character felt like it was shoehorned in the movie. Her main reason was to save Stark but how she found him remains a mystery.
Thanos was a very sophisticated villain in Infinity War whereas here he was just another big bad arrogant villain.
Compared to Infinity War this movie lacked a sense of forward motion, after killing Thanos and retrieving all the stones the rest of the people and avengers were avenged, their job was done and plot complete. The final battle felt like it was there because movie was lacking a big action set piece.
The final battle was great because of the characters present in them, seeing all of them in action was a sight to behold but there was no sense of scale(just compare it to Wakanda battle from Infinity War).
The cinematography was also good in parts like the Ant-Man scene where he was searching if his daughter was alive was well shot and the frantic camera movement showed his angst as well but then the Captain America vs Captain America fight scene was very poorly shot with so many cuts that it was hard to follow their fight, Otherwise the CGI and most of the scene looked very beautiful.
The soundtrack is probably the best one yet.
This movie had to deliver on a lot of promises and initially I felt that few cons could have been neglected when scale of the movie is this big but seeing how Infinity War released just a year ago did delivered on a lot of similar promises in a shorter run time, I think this is a good movie which definitely could have done better but ultimately what matters is that it was able to give satisfying end to an era of superhero which are an inspiration to younger generation.
