Terrible plot, but my word the climbing is something else
9 January 2022
The plot dialogue and first half of this film is mediocre which makes you wonder why Clint bothered with it. At this stage this movie is scoring maybe a 5. Then the climbing scenes kick in and they are some of the most exciting, vertigo inducing and beautifully filmed climbing scenes in film history. This is largely helped by the fact the stuntmen and Clint had to actually climb, no CGI no stage sets just reality. These on their own make the film worth watching and is where this movie will divide opinion. If you like mountains and climbing and can forgive an awful plot then this is an 7 or 8. If you can't then avoid as it is a 5 at best.

Damned by mediocrity
13 April 2020
This isnt a bad movie, it's just not a particularly good one either. Robert Red Ford is his usual brilliant self as the master spy master on his last day before retirement, but Brad Pitt mainly phones in one might be one of his worst attempts at acting. He isn't helped a script which sounds like it was written by a CIA hero worshipping fantasist and a characterisation which can be kindly described as perfunctory.

Solid thriller

With a great performance from a 10 year old Brad Renfro this a solid legal thriller. Perhaps not the best of the Grisham film adaptations but certainly an entertaining two hours.

Well acted and with a gripping plot this New Orleans set courtroom thriller is at the top end of the genre.

Entertaining crime caper
13 January 2020
Not Eastwoods or Bridges best work but nevertheless this is an entertaining bank robbery caper which keeps your interest until the credits roll. The odd couple chemistry between the leads ensures the film maintains momentum and there are some pretty amusing set ups littered throughout; worth a look for Eastwood fans. It is also worth watching for the beautiful Montana big sky cinematography.

A good solid thriller.
12 January 2020
A perfectly enjoyable globe trotting thriller based on the murky dealings of the off-shore banking industry. Perhaps it veers off into the realms of the unlikely at times, particularly with a lengthy and unnecessary action sequence in the middle which, despite its implausibility, is nevertheless well filmed. This is a shame as the movie is thrilling enough without the need for it to go full on Die Hard.

Mediocre action move.
6 January 2020
Basically this film consists of two hours of Keanu Reeves stylishly shooting people in the head. With a minimal plot devoid of tension this stylish action starts to become tediously predictable as the bodies with headshots start to mount up.

Well made movie but...
3 January 2020
There is no doubt that The Place Beyond the Pines is a beautifully shot movie. From the opening scene to the last there is a really engrossing film making style at play here. Equally the performances from the cast are exceptional with both Gosling and Bradley Cooper putting in standout performances. The plot does real you in and produces a number of interesting surprises across its three acts, although the third act does drag a touch and suffers in comparison to the first two. The only real problem here is the underlying message. For all its ingenious story telling focused on the topic of fatherhood it just doesn't having anything meaningful to say, which, by the end is a touch disappointing.

Ludicrous plot but great performances
31 December 2019
Warrior is one of the better fighting movies put to celluloid, but like it's other better known relatives it suffers from ludicrous plotting. Nevertheless if you can look beyond the unlikeliness, there is a very entertaining film simmering underneath underpinned by some truly brilliant performances by all three of the leads. Egerton in particular is brilliant as the the elder brother trying to hold his family together. So is Hardy as the younger brother dealing with some serious issues caused by his abusive alcoholic father and the impace that had on his childhood. The fight scenes are also very well chereographed so if you are interested in fighting then this film comes highly recommended.

Well made docu drama
30 December 2019
With only three minutes for actual plane landing drama, Eastwood does a tremendous job of building a riveting movie around what was dubbed the Miracle on the Hudson. There clearly has been a considerable amount of effort been put into making the portrayal of these events as accurate as possible, which makes for an interesting and enjoyable watch.

Serviceable court room drama
30 December 2019
Entertaining, although not brilliant, court room drama held together by an exceptional performance from McConaughey. Some of the plot doesn't seem to make a great deal of sense, but hey what do you expect from a film based on airport fiction. Equally some of the direction is a bit hectic as well. It is not appropriate to film a court room drama like it's the Blair Witch Project, what is with all the nausea inducing handheld camera nonsense? This aside it's a solid thriller and worthy of two hours of your time.

Tedious uninteresting monster sci-fi
30 December 2019
Predictable monster hunting fare which has clear rip off of Alien and Predator (including shamelessly the POV monster shots), but in an attempt to cover it up introduces a Viking element. Typically inaccurate Viking clichés then ensue which when combined with terrible CGI produce a very dull movie that not even good performances from Ron Perlman or John Hurt can salvage. If you want to spend two hours of your day watching a monster hunting movie just watch Predator as this just isn't worth your time.

Good, but shame about the ending
23 December 2019
For the vast majority of this movie it is a dark, fascinating mystery thriller as we follow the destructive relationship between a father and son in rural Sweden against the backdrop of a foreign invasion. Going against Hollywood type the lead characters are dislikeable and driven by their own petty interests, despite the disasters falling all around them. This in itself makes The Unthinkable a different and compelling view. Right up until the last 20 minutes when the irresistible urge by the scriptwriters to close narrative loops leads to a series of ludicrous coincidences producing plot holes that Michael Bay would be proud of. This is a shame as it undermines what would otherwise be a terrific film.

No doubt this is supposed to be clever but it is a gruelling miserable two hours of violent, sadistic nonsense.

Quintessential action movie

Often copied very rarely equalled Die Hard is a true giant of the action movie genre. Almost perfect in its thrilling plotting, epic stunts, interesting characterisation and technical brilliance, this is a movie you can watch over and over again.

Excellent cinematography papers over the cracks
11 December 2019
This film is undoubtedly beautiful to look at, there has clearly been a lot of care and thought put into framing each scene, with tremendous results. Unfortunately despite excellent performances from the leads neither is enough to paper over some of the plot holes which undermine and other wise excellent movie.

Slow starter but worth sticking with

It takes a while to get going but if you stay around long enough you will be rewarded with a fascinating and thought provoking sci-fi adventure. The leads are excellent, the direction is pacy and the cinematography is absolutely stunning.

Rescued by Denzel
10 December 2019
This is a pretty standard by the numbers action movie which is saved from total mediocrity by the usual brilliant performance Denzel Washington. A film that would otherwise quickly fade from the memory if it wasn't for the stylishly filmed moments of morally questionable, ultra violence punctuated throughout its length. The final showdown is certainly one of the more gruesome and imaginative endings I have see in a while.
