Rogue One (2016)
A Surprise Addition to the Classic Trilogy
This is probably my 2nd favorite Star Wars movie. (My favorite will be revealed shortly.) The team that wrote, directed, and scored this film should do all of the future movies. Not since The Phantom Menace have I seen a movie worthy to be called a Star Wars film. (The other 2 prequel movies were cool, but I consider them Palpatine's story. And rightly so, as Palpatine is probably one of cinema's greatest villains.) Rogue One could have been a true fiasco by riding on the strands of story about the capturing of the Death Star plans, and if it was made any later, it would have been probably considered "yet another Death Star film". But Rogue One had character, characters, heart, dialogue, grit, and pacing just as much as the original/classic trilogy had, and I feel is a welcome addition to be embraced. It truly made you cheer for the rebel alliance, and weep for their sacrifices against the fearsome Empire.
My favorite Star Wars film is The Empire Strikes Back.
The Drop (2014)
Drop Dead Gorgeous
Boy, this is a near perfect movie for me. Fantastic pacing, dialogue, characters, settings, music, and chemistry. For me, this is Tom Hardy, the master actor, at one of his best. The first time I saw this, I bawled my eyes out at the ending, and I cannot explain why. I saw it again last week, and again I cried at the ending. This movie is special for me. I will watch this one again and again.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
This is Star Wars !!
I wish I had seen this on the Big Screen. If I had known ahead of time that the Kasdans wrote the film, I probably would have been first in line.
This is one of Ron Howard's best films, and he has truly made a fantastic Star Wars film. The acting and pacing was wonderful. The characters were interesting. The worlds were captivating. This was Star Wars. I want more.
Nice surprises were the L3-37's uprising, and Han speaking Shyriiwook. I heard peoples' complaint about a single movie incorporating the meeting of Chewbacca and of Lando, the acquiring of the Falcon, and the breaking the Kessel Run record, but I believe this pulled it off. (In Yoda voice:) "Hokie, this was not".
If the movie fails for people, its probably because Paul Bettany's villain was not on par with the other Empire or Sith baddies.
