Beautiful Boy (2018)
cutting loose
Many movies can be good, but what really sticks with me are those films that show real life situations and relationships. Where the characters are what give structure to a movie; characters that can show us the complexity of being human, the internal world of our personalities, our strengths and our vulnerabilities.
The acting from steve carell and timothee chalamet is something so great, its heartbreaking. I will never get over the fact that neither of them were nominated for an oscar.
I think the movie as a whole is a bit messy, i got mixed up with the timing. But other than that, this movie holds such an important message. I love the scene where Nick is in a meeting (his dad david is there) and he tells the story of how someone explained to him how whats wrong with him isnt the drugs or booze, but that thats the way he's been dealing or 'treating' his problem. The act of consuming is a symptom, which holds a message of a ghost that i haven't been able to deal with.
On the other hand we see this father, trying to do his best, protecting him, admiring him, loving him more than everything; and thinking that if he is always there for his son, maybe nick will get better. The difficulty of seeing whats right in front of you, the desperation and frustration, the guilt. And finally, he lets nick go, because he realizes that he cant save someone who cant be saved. David puts away his pictures with nic, says goodbye to him because giving up this idea of saving his son is the only way to be a father and husband to the rest of his family. Every decision has an emotional risk or cost.
A Star Is Born (2018)
Goosebumps dont lie.
Its a story about passion, people who are passionate about something and how that is what makes them fall in love with each other.
They take you on tour, make you feel their music and its actually real music, real voices. Ive watched the movie several times and i got goosebumps...every time.
Gaga could have easily done a poor job being the character's story so similar to hers in real life; but shes great, she's genuine, and the chemistry with brad just flows.
Maybe i would have liked to see more of Ally in her process of becoming a star, but i guess by the end you get a feeling that her career is just beggining, and Jackson was part of the road to a greater destination. He's her first step and she's his last breath.
They meet at an intersection, where she gets directions and finds her way, but hes already 'too far gone'.
Zimna wojna (2018)
Self preservation
This movie threw me, left me speechless, i couldnt even cry.
Its interesting what happens in cold war. It shows how two people fall in love and even though they undeniably want to be together, they fight for something else as well. For keeping their own sense of self. He cant stay in poland, he has to go to paris in order to develop himself as an artist. She at the same time, cant just follow him in this, "who will i be?". Fear of losing own sense of self, identity, value, meaning. She eventually goes to paris and cant handle the feeling of loss, she was a big fish in a small pond back home, now she struggles finding value for herself. Finally they both end up sacrificing their integrity, their own identity in order to be together, which is what finally kills them. The struggle of 'Cant live with or without you'.
But why didnt they just move on, fall in love with someone else and have nice memories of a great love?
When its about the love of your life i guess love is stronger than anything else, even at times of war.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Cringe
Its not until the final part of the movie where im able to take the cringe look of my face and realize how cool the Live Aid event really was.
Unfortunetly, this doesnt repair everything else thats so wrong with this production. Poor script, poor character development, its a 'safe' movie. Trying to show so much with no real depth. Rami malek did what he could, i still found his and everyones acting pretty carituresque and by the end i found myself looking for queen interviews in youtube to compensate with my disaapointment. I love queen, i think there is no one who doesnt, and i feel like the producers rested on that fact and didnt really go beyond, which is what Freddie Mercury deserves. I think mediocracy and greed is what played an important role here and Mercury was an icon far from that.
Contact (1997)
Circularity
Ive watched this when i was a girl, and ive watched it now cause i saw it in the 'great movies' section of Roger Ebert reviews site.
I was completely inmersed in the movie from the very beggining. Jodie Foster's character is really cool, she goes beyond of what you would expect for this role in the 90s. Her conviction and passion about space creates curiosity. It makes you follow her in this journey she takes where science and faith meet.
The movie reminded me of Dennis Villeneuve's ARRIVAL. Where time and space can be concieved in a different way, the circularity of Life. In this way, i feel like Contact might have been a visionary movie for its time.
The Breaker Upperers (2018)
definitely a laughing out loud situation
Just a great funny, uplifting and easy movie. it doesnt ask you for much, it lets you relax and have a good time.
Dark and corky comedy at its best.
Good acting, lovable characters.
All the characters could have turned out to be played out so stupid or caricaturesque, but the actors do a great job.
Its certainly a 'lifter upperer'
