1. Farewell My Concubine (1993)

Votes: 33,180 | Gross: $5.22M

Its Chinese name is 霸王别姬 (BaWangBieJi) and, though I said the movies are listed in no particular order, it deserves to be at the top. Set in the 20th century china (over the time span of about 50 years), the story involves every major incident in china during that period- from the chaos of the Japanese invasion to the unrest of communism- there are anecdotes throughout the movie. Starring one of my all-time favorite actor- 张国荣 (Leslie Cheung) in the key role, this was the first Chinese movie suggested to me by a Chinese person.

2. A Better Tomorrow (1986)

78 Metascore

A reforming ex-gangster tries to reconcile with his estranged policeman brother, but the ties to his former gang are difficult to break.

Director: John Woo | Stars: Lung Ti, Leslie Cheung, Chow Yun-Fat, Emily Chu

Votes: 25,474

A 1986 Hong Kong-action film, starring 周润发 (Chow Yun-fat), 张国荣 (Leslie Cheung) and 狄龙 (Di Lung), this movie is a legend. Made with a tight budget and relatively unknown due to virtually no advertising until it went on screen, it broke Hong Kong's box office record and went on to become a blockbuster in Asian countries. It is ranked as the second-best in the list of top 100 Chinese motion pictures. The movie that ranks #1 in the list is called 'Spring in a Small Town'.

3. Hero (2002)

PG-13 | 120 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

85 Metascore

A defense officer, Nameless, was summoned by the King of Qin regarding his success of terminating three warriors.

Director: Yimou Zhang | Stars: Jet Li, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Maggie Cheung, Ziyi Zhang

Votes: 187,684 | Gross: $53.71M

People often get to watch many famous Chinese stars in the same movie, but this one is different. Starring 李连杰 (Jet Li), 甄子丹 (Donnei Yen), 梁朝伟 (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai), 章子怡 (ZiYi Zhang) and 张曼玉 (Maggie Cheung Man Yuk), and directed by 张艺谋 (Zhang YiMou), this movie is slow but poisoning.

4. Infernal Affairs (2002)

R | 101 min | Action, Crime, Drama

75 Metascore

A story between a mole in the police department and an undercover cop. Their objectives are the same: to find out who is the mole, and who is the cop.

Directors: Andrew Lau, Alan Mak | Stars: Andy Lau, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Anthony Chau-Sang Wong, Eric Tsang

Votes: 131,498 | Gross: $0.17M

Later adopted in the Oscar Winning (For Best Motion Picture and three others) Hollywood Thriller 'The Departed' in 2006, this movie actually has three parts and stars many actors, including, 梁朝伟 (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai) and the famous cantopop singer/actor 刘德华 (Andy Lau Tak-Wah).

5. Goddess of Mercy (2003)

Director: Ann Hui | Stars: Wei Zhao, Nicholas Tse, Yunlong Liu, Jianbin Chen

Votes: 510

Starring the famous actress 赵薇 ('Vicky' Wei Zhao) this movie is about an undercover female cop. Its just brilliantly created and through a simple and confined story it expresses Chinese people/life in a way, that I think, few movies have.

6. CJ7 (2008)

PG | 88 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

46 Metascore

A poor Chinese laborer learns important lessons after his son gets a strange new toy.

Director: Stephen Chow | Stars: Stephen Chow, Yuqi Zhang, Jiao Xu, Lei Huang

Votes: 17,238 | Gross: $0.21M

A very touching comedy drama by 张星驰(Steven Chow)- this movie is the strangest alien movie I've ever watched, and among the best ones. The child-actress (who acts a boy in this movie) is just amazing.
