1. Tony Scott

Producer | Domino

Tony Scott was a British-born film director and producer. He was the youngest of three brothers, one of whom is fellow film director Ridley Scott. He was born in North Shields, Northumberland, England to parents Jean and Colonel Francis Percy Scott. As a result of his father's career in the British...

Hasn't really made a masterpiece imo (unlike some of the others in this list), but the sheer amount of quality movies I loved or liked makes him stand out. I don't think I've ever seen a Tony Scott movie I didn't like. Therefor he's my Nr. 1.

2. Sergio Leone

Writer | Once Upon a Time in America

Sergio Leone was virtually born into the cinema - he was the son of Roberto Roberti (A.K.A. Vincenzo Leone), one of Italy's cinema pioneers, and actress Bice Valerian. Leone entered films in his late teens, working as an assistant director to both Italian directors and U.S. directors working in ...

Visual genious. Who needs deep dialogue when you have an eye for cinematography like this guy.

3. Michael Mann

Producer | The Insider

As a director, screenwriter, and producer, four-time Academy Award nominee Michael Mann has established himself as one of the most innovative and influential filmmakers in American cinema. After writing and directing the Primetime Emmy Award-winning television movie The Jericho Mile (1979), Mann ...

Directed the "perfect" movie with 'Heat'. Heat was very much his life's work and you can tell. Every scene is close to flawless. If it wasn't for Heat he probably wouldn't be on this list at all.

4. Oliver Stone

Director | JFK

Oliver Stone has become known as a master of controversial subjects and a legendary film maker. His films are filled with a variety of film angles and styles, he pushes his actors to give Oscar-worthy performances, and despite his failures, has always returned to success.

William Oliver Stone was ...

Platoon and JFK secure his place on the list. My favourite war and detective movie respectably.

5. Martin Scorsese

Producer | Killers of the Flower Moon

Martin Charles Scorsese was born on November 17, 1942 in Queens, New York City, to Catherine Scorsese (née Cappa) and Charles Scorsese, who both worked in Manhattan's garment district, and whose families both came from Palermo, Sicily. He was raised in the neighborhood of Little Italy, which later ...

Similar to Tony Scott, but more hit or miss for me. I don't really like some of his newer stuff like 'The Departed' and 'Wolf of Wall Street' for example.

6. Martin Brest

Director | Scent of a Woman

Martin Brest was born on August 8, 1951 in The Bronx, New York City, New York, USA. He is a director and writer, known for Scent of a Woman (1992), Midnight Run (1988) and Beverly Hills Cop (1984).

Making an action-comedy both suspenseful and funny is incredibly difficult. Martin Brest pulled off the 2 absolute best in the genre. Gigli may have ruined his career, but I didn't watch it, so it doesn't count.

7. Tommy Lee Jones

Actor | The Fugitive

Tommy Lee Jones was born in San Saba, Texas, the son of Lucille Marie (Scott), a police officer and beauty shop owner, and Clyde C. Jones, who worked on oil fields. Tommy himself worked in underwater construction and on an oil rig. He attended St. Mark's School of Texas, a prestigious prep school ...

Best known as an actor of course, but his 2 shots at directing a feature film have completely blown me away. Especially 'The Homesman' is something special. My favourite Western of the modern era.

8. Joel Coen

Producer | The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Joel Daniel Coen is an American filmmaker who regularly collaborates with his younger brother Ethan. They made Raising Arizona, Barton Fink, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, True Grit, O Brother Where Art Thou?, Burn After Reading, A Serious Man, Inside Llewyn Davis, Hail Caesar and other projects. Joel ...

Yeah..the Coen brothers. I always liked them, but they were never up there with the best for me. Not sure why, because I liked a lot of their movies, with Blood Simple, Fargo, NCFOM and True Grit as my favourites, but none of them I really LOVED. After watching The Big Lebowski though, this has changed and they get a deserved spot on the list.

9. Quentin Tarantino

Writer | Reservoir Dogs

Quentin Jerome Tarantino was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. His father, Tony Tarantino, is an Italian-American actor and musician from New York, and his mother, Connie (McHugh), is a nurse from Tennessee. Quentin moved with his mother to Torrance, California, when he was four years old.

In January of...

I like movies that tell stories through pictures. The fact he can still interest me with an almost exclusively diologue experience is incredible. 'Reservoir Dogs' and 'The Hateful Eight' are my favourites as it is Tarantino distilled to it's purest form.

10. Christopher Nolan

Writer | Tenet

Best known for his cerebral, often nonlinear, storytelling, acclaimed Academy Award winner writer/director/producer Sir Christopher Nolan CBE was born in London, England. Over the course of more than 25 years of filmmaking, Nolan has gone from low-budget independent films to working on some of the ...

Never been a huge Nolan fan, but Interstellar was a masterpiece and the fact he made me enjoy a superhero movie deserves credit.
