by indeetee | created - 04 May 2017 | updated - 11 Mar 2020 | PublicEuropean colonization of Southeast Asia began as western influence started to enter the area around the 16th century, when the Dutch and Portuguese were attracted by the lucrative spice trade.
Decolonization proceeded rapidly after WWII and the end of European rule in Southeast Asia was marked when Britain ended its protectorate of the Sultanate of Brunei in 1984.
