Underrated movies

by ajgreen-18839 | created - 11 Aug 2020 | updated - 11 Aug 2020 | Public

A list of movies I Personally believe to be underrated. This is obviously my personal opinion. Also underrated does not mean movies that didn't make much money. I'm going for movies that don't receive as much credit as I believe they deserve. This list is also in no particular order.

1. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)

PG-13 | 140 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

68 Metascore

Three years into the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi pursues a new threat, while Anakin Skywalker is lured by Chancellor Palpatine into a sinister plot to rule the galaxy.

Director: George Lucas | Stars: Hayden Christensen, Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Samuel L. Jackson

Votes: 846,115 | Gross: $380.26M

I would say I grew up with the Star Wars prequels. I did also watch the originals and have always preferred them, but I never saw a problem with this movie. In fact, the only real issue I have with this movie today is the "bad" dialogue in places, but then again, the dialogue did give us some quality memes. I love the much darker tone to this movie, Ewan McGregor and Ian McDiarmid give great performances, the worldbuilding is amazing (as is with the rest of the prequels, despite the dated CGI and although the sequels look better, the worldbuilding is at times lazy with like 70 desert planets that all look the same) and I think the transition in tone halfway through the movie I think was excellent.

2. Kingdom of Heaven (2005)

R | 144 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

63 Metascore

Balian of Ibelin travels to Jerusalem during the Crusades of the 12th century, and there he finds himself as the defender of the city and its people.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Liam Neeson, Martin Hancock

Votes: 315,552 | Gross: $47.40M

First off, I am talking about the directors' cut of this movie, as I have not yet seen the theatrical cut. I was expecting an "alright" movie going in, based off the reviews, but when I finished I sat there wondering why everyone hates this movie. I've heard the directors' cut does improve A LOT of this movie and that only makes me annoyed that the studio butchered it and cut out 45 minutes. The directors' cut should be the version everyone sees.

3. Defiance (I) (2008)

R | 137 min | Action, Drama, History

58 Metascore

Jewish brothers in German-occupied Eastern Europe escape into a Belorussian forest, where they join Russian resistance fighters, and endeavor to build a village, in order to protect themselves and about one thousand Jewish non-combatants.

Director: Edward Zwick | Stars: Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber, Jamie Bell, Alexa Davalos

Votes: 155,727 | Gross: $28.64M

I don't have that much to say about this one. I just think it's better than the scores it received on IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic suggest.

4. Cars (2006)

G | 116 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

73 Metascore

On the way to the biggest race of his life, a hotshot rookie race car gets stranded in a rundown town and learns that winning isn't everything in life.

Directors: John Lasseter, Joe Ranft | Stars: Owen Wilson, Bonnie Hunt, Paul Newman, Larry the Cable Guy

Votes: 470,554 | Gross: $244.08M

Okay, I'll admit, at the time Cars was released, it was Pixar's worst movie, but no where near a disaster. So many people go into how the cars are alive and all that nonsense and constantly compain about how cars might have organs or whatnot, but I say just shut up and enjoy the movie. You have the right to ask these questions and all, but nobody then goes asking how the toys are alive if they're made out of wool, or how the monsters produce a child. I'll admit the story is pretty basic and all, but it's Pixar taking a basic story and putting a creative twist on it, isn't that what they do? Sure they haven't done it as well as movies like Toy Story, but still it is FAR from bad in my opinion. I get that the characters don't serve the story by being cars, but to my knowledge, the characters in Kung Fu Panda don't serve the story by being animals yet nobody complains about that, why... because the movies are great even with that fact in mind, and Cars should be viewed in the same way.

5. Watchmen (2009)

R | 162 min | Action, Drama, Mystery

56 Metascore

In a version of 1985 where superheroes exist, the murder of a colleague sends active vigilante Rorschach on the trail of a conspiracy that will change the course of history.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino, Malin Akerman

Votes: 582,870 | Gross: $107.51M

In a world where superhero movies are more common than ever before, I just constantly find myself wishing for something to be different. While there are some today like this I think one of the best cases was Watchmen. The darker tone and the way in which the movie tackles the potential impacts of real life superheroes on the world as we know it shine as particularly great elements of this movie, as well as Zack Snyder's visuals. Also as a side note, I think Jackie Earle Haley's Rorschach voice is better than Christian Bale's Batman voice. Overall, this is easily the most underrated superhero movie and I wish more superhero movies today were like this.

6. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)

PG-13 | 151 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

53 Metascore

Jack Sparrow races to recover the heart of Davy Jones to avoid enslaving his soul to Jones' service, as other friends and foes seek the heart for their own agenda as well.

Director: Gore Verbinski | Stars: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Jack Davenport

Votes: 768,196 | Gross: $423.32M

Of all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, this is probably the one I'm most nostalgic for. And at the time of writing this now, I have't really thought of what else to say. Johnny Depp is exceptional as Jack Sparrow (sorry, Captain Jack Sparrow) as always, Davy Jones is a great villain, the plot of everyone going after the heart I think is amazing and the movie never bores me, every time it's on, it always catches my eye.

7. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)

G | 91 min | Animation, Drama, Family

74 Metascore

A deformed bell-ringer must assert his independence from a vicious government minister in order to help his friend, a gypsy dancer.

Directors: Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise | Stars: Demi Moore, Jason Alexander, Mary Kay Bergman, Corey Burton

Votes: 171,804 | Gross: $100.14M

Okay, the Gargoyles do ruin this movie and so does the slapstick comedy in general, making this film a tonal mess. However, when this movie goes for the serious tone, it works amazingly. Frollo is one of the best Disney villains ever, Hellfire is one of the best Disney songs, let alone villain songs, there's so much greatness in this movie that it's such such SUCH a shame that it's ruined by the tonal problems.

8. Infernal Affairs II (2003)

Not Rated | 119 min | Action, Crime, Drama

In this prequel to Mou gaan dou (2002), Chan Wing Yan has just become an undercover cop in the triads while Lau Kin Ming joins the police force. Both the triads and the police find an enemy in a rival crime boss.

Directors: Andrew Lau, Alan Mak | Stars: Edison Chen, Shawn Yue, Anthony Chau-Sang Wong, Francis Ng

Votes: 19,793

Well, I doubt many of you have seen this one. I love the original Infernal Affairs and The Departed, but I think maybe the mistake I made with the original Infernal Affairs was watching The Departed first. This meant that I pretty much knew the whole story before watching Infernal Affairs, that's not saying it wasn't great, but I think I would've liked it even more if I maybe saw the original first. But when it came to Infernal Affairs II, I knew nothing about the movie. As a result, the twists and turns the movie takes felt way more shocking and while I still think the first movie is superior, this is still a fine prequel.

9. Fantasia 2000 (1999)

G | 75 min | Animation, Family, Fantasy

59 Metascore

An update of the original film with new interpretations of great works of classical music.

Directors: James Algar, Gaëtan Brizzi, Paul Brizzi, Hendel Butoy, Francis Glebas, Eric Goldberg, Don Hahn, Pixote Hunt | Stars: James Levine, Steve Martin, Itzhak Perlman, Quincy Jones

Votes: 41,446 | Gross: $60.66M

Sure I feel much more of a passion when watching the original Fantasia, but I would say this movie is still pretty good and is way better than people give it credit for in my opinion. I think it must be because of the much shorter runtime, but still.

10. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)

PG-13 | 169 min | Adventure, Fantasy

58 Metascore

A reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of dwarves to reclaim their mountain home, and the gold within it from the dragon Smaug.

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Andy Serkis

Votes: 873,518 | Gross: $303.00M

Now, The Lord of the Rings trilogy are my favourite movies of all time and comparing those movies to The Hobbit trilogy does make The Hobbit seem disappointing, but was I disappointed while watching them? Absolutely not. They're obviously no where near the perfection of LotR, but I think people have been way too harsh on them. While I only put An Unexpected Journey on this list, I'll say that I'm really putting the whole trilogy on the list. It has its issues, but it's still a great journey in Middle Earth.

11. Man of Steel (2013)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

55 Metascore

An alien child is evacuated from his dying world and sent to Earth to live among humans. His peace is threatened when other survivors of his home planet invade Earth.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane

Votes: 812,230 | Gross: $291.05M

I like darker Superman. I know a lot of you don't and feel it doesn't suit the character, but I like it none the less. Also, Hans Zimmer's score is straight up awesome.

12. Oliver & Company (1988)

G | 74 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

58 Metascore

A lost and alone kitten joins a gang of dogs engaged in petty larceny in New York City.

Director: George Scribner | Stars: Joey Lawrence, Billy Joel, Cheech Marin, Richard Mulligan

Votes: 52,996 | Gross: $74.15M

I expected this to be one of the weakest Disney movies when going in, but I was pleasently surprised. It's far from their best and I'd say feels the least like a Disney movie of all their movies, but I still enjoyed it. It was heading for a 6 at first, but certainly improved as it went on.

13. The Cat Returns (2002)

G | 75 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

70 Metascore

After helping a cat, a seventeen-year-old girl finds herself involuntarily engaged to a cat Prince in a magical world where her only hope of freedom lies with a dapper cat statuette come to life.

Director: Hiroyuki Morita | Stars: Chizuru Ikewaki, Yoshihiko Hakamada, Aki Maeda, Takayuki Yamada

Votes: 64,586

I'm surprised I'm putting a Ghibli movie on this list, as I think a fair few of those movies are overrated personally. But The Cat Returns is just so cute and silly and random that I actually really enjoy it. It may not be Ghibli's deepest movie or their best, but compared to some of their other work, this movie deserves more credit.

14. Prometheus (I) (2012)

R | 124 min | Adventure, Mystery, Sci-Fi

64 Metascore

Following clues to the origin of mankind, a team finds a structure on a distant moon, but they soon realize they are not alone.

Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Noomi Rapace, Logan Marshall-Green, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron

Votes: 644,575 | Gross: $126.48M

I will agree, the characters are incredibly stupid and I'd assume they all have "danger" as their middle name because they seem to have no concept of the word at all and just wonder off to their deaths without a second thought. Having said that, I think this movie's still pretty decent. The visuals are amazing and it's good to see Ridley Scott back as well and while it's obviously not as good as the original Alien and Aliens, compared to the absolutely terrible Alien 3 and the slightly better, but still pretty meh overall in my opinion Alien Resurrection, this movie is pretty good in comparison.

15. The King's Speech (2010)

R | 118 min | Biography, Drama, History

88 Metascore

The story of King George VI, his unexpected ascension to the throne of the British Empire in 1936, and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch overcome his stammer.

Director: Tom Hooper | Stars: Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter, Derek Jacobi

Votes: 708,212 | Gross: $138.80M

You might be wondering, 8.0 on IMDb? Best Picture Winner? This movie isn't underrated. But in my eyes, everyone I see says this movie is overrated and didn't deserve Best Picture. This isn't even my favourite movie of 2010, but I still think it was a good choice for the Oscar. I guess it's because I'm British isn't it?

16. For a Few Dollars More (1965)

R | 132 min | Drama, Western

74 Metascore

Two bounty hunters with the same intentions team up to track down a gang of outlaws led by a psychotic Mexican bandit, who is plotting an audacious bank robbery.

Director: Sergio Leone | Stars: Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, Gian Maria Volontè, Mara Krupp

Votes: 274,883 | Gross: $15.00M

Yet another one where you'll look and say "this movie isn't underrated". 8.3 is a pretty darn good score so why is it here? Because The Good, The Bad and The Ugly exists. This is not me saying that movie's bad, oh no, I think that movie's great with the final duel being a 10/10 scene. But in my opinion, while The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is always in the spotlight, this one is left behind and forgotten by most, but in my opinion, it's the best of the trilogy.

17. A Bug's Life (1998)

G | 95 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

78 Metascore

A misfit ant, looking for "warriors" to save his colony from greedy grasshoppers, recruits a group of bugs that turn out to be an inept circus troupe.

Directors: John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton | Stars: Kevin Spacey, David Foley, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Hayden Panettiere

Votes: 314,721 | Gross: $162.80M

Why do I love A Bug's Life? Well, let me tell you in 1 word: NOSTALGIA!

18. Robots (2005)

PG | 91 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

64 Metascore

In a robot world, a young idealistic inventor travels to the big city to join his inspiration's company, only to find himself opposing its sinister new management.

Directors: Chris Wedge, Carlos Saldanha | Stars: Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, Mel Brooks, Robin Williams

Votes: 162,062 | Gross: $128.20M

I guess it's just nostalgia again.
