1. Antichrist (2009)

Not Rated | 108 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller

49 Metascore

A grieving couple retreat to their cabin in the woods, hoping to repair their broken hearts and troubled marriage, but nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse.

Director: Lars von Trier | Stars: Willem Dafoe, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Storm Acheche Sahlstrøm

Votes: 136,497 | Gross: $0.40M

The film tries very hard to turn something actually beautiful on its head. The love and affection of two people trying to deal with difficulties. Sexuality in particular is depicted completely broken and disturbing here.

2. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)

R | 121 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

73 Metascore

Steven, a charismatic surgeon, is forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart, when the behavior of a teenage boy he has taken under his wing turns sinister.

Director: Yorgos Lanthimos | Stars: Barry G. Bernson, Herb Caillouet, Bill Camp, Raffey Cassidy

Votes: 187,215 | Gross: $2.29M

A great cast of actors who would seem to make any film, no matter how disturbed it is. Two parents who at a certain point are completely overwhelmed by being good parents. It ends in a violence fiesta against children, where later as a viewer you hardly dare to bring children into this world.

3. Mother! (2017)

R | 121 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

76 Metascore

A couple's relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.

Director: Darren Aronofsky | Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer

Votes: 249,597 | Gross: $17.80M

I will never understand how one could convince Jennifer Lawrence to do this film. Disturbing violence against women (and children) with a completely excessive scene at the end. Just don't watch it.

4. Martyrs (2008)

R | 99 min | Horror

A young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.

Director: Pascal Laugier | Stars: Morjana Alaoui, Mylène Jampanoï, Catherine Bégin, Robert Toupin

Votes: 106,374

Torturing people to the very limit in order to reach a new level of consciousness. Someone was probably not very careful in their upbringing. Severe violence and torture are central issues here. Nothing for weak nerves.

5. Irreversible (2002)

Not Rated | 97 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

51 Metascore

Events over the course of one traumatic night in Paris unfold in reverse-chronological order as the beautiful Alex is brutally raped and beaten by a stranger in an underpass tunnel.

Director: Gaspar Noé | Stars: Monica Bellucci, Vincent Cassel, Albert Dupontel, Philippe Nahon

Votes: 147,613 | Gross: $0.75M

Another movie that will probably give perverse viewers great pleasure. There is a rape scene here that literally goes on forever. Very disturbing film that demands a lot from the viewer to watch it carefully until the end. Strong violence scenes and sexual violence.

6. The Exorcist (1973)

R | 122 min | Horror

83 Metascore

When a young girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two Catholic priests to save her life.

Director: William Friedkin | Stars: Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Linda Blair, Lee J. Cobb

Votes: 454,816 | Gross: $232.91M

I'm not entirely sure myself whether the film should be blacklisted. Admittedly, it is an indispensable horror classic that a horror fan must have seen. The violence and negative portrayal of the main character, a little girl, should never have been included in the final version. Therefore the film is included here.

7. Hostel (2005)

R | 94 min | Horror

55 Metascore

Three backpackers head to a Slovak city that promises to meet their hedonistic expectations, with no idea of the hell that awaits them.

Director: Eli Roth | Stars: Jay Hernandez, Derek Richardson, Eythor Gudjonsson, Barbara Nedeljakova

Votes: 190,928 | Gross: $47.33M

At the time, the film was released, it massively expanded the pain threshold for viewers in terms of violence. You can really tell how the film glorifies every scene of violence and torture. Just don't watch it.

8. I Saw the Devil (2010)

Not Rated | 144 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

67 Metascore

A secret agent exacts revenge on a serial killer through a series of captures and releases.

Director: Jee-woon Kim | Stars: Lee Byung-hun, Choi Min-sik, Jeon Gook-hwan, Chun Ho-jin

Votes: 146,148 | Gross: $0.13M

The film is about revenge and how hate just turns into more hate. Or let's say violence leads to even more violence. A crazy psycho killer makes people killers as well. Well-made film, but actually too glorifying violence.

9. Midsommar (2019)

R | 148 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

72 Metascore

A couple travels to Northern Europe to visit a rural hometown's fabled Swedish mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.

Director: Ari Aster | Stars: Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, Vilhelm Blomgren, William Jackson Harper

Votes: 402,818 | Gross: $27.33M

Midsommar want's the viewer to be shown the horror with all clarity and painful length. The explicitness of the violence and the drawn-out perverse moments makes the film a torture for the viewer.

10. Hostel: Part II (2007)

R | 94 min | Horror

46 Metascore

Three American college students studying abroad are lured to a Slovakian hostel and discover the grim reality behind it.

Director: Eli Roth | Stars: Lauren German, Heather Matarazzo, Bijou Phillips, Roger Bart

Votes: 95,980 | Gross: $17.61M

At the time, the film was released, it massively expanded the pain threshold for viewers in terms of violence. You can really tell how the film glorifies every scene of violence and torture. Just don't watch it.
