Pseudo-Slashers

by zigmenthotep | created - 05 Sep 2020 | updated - 3 months ago | Public

Movies containing elements of slashers, but without enough to actually be one. Most often the defining aspect of a pseudo-slasher is an arbitrary killer. That is one who is completely unrelated to the actual plot. A good test is if it seems like a shasher, but you could literally relace the killer with a bear without altering the story, it's a pseudo-slasher. 1. The Basement (III) (2017)

82 min | Horror

A group of international students explores a basement that has been abandoned for years. But what starts off as an exploratory séance ends in bloody mayhem when a malicious entity is summoned.

Directors: László Illés, Vozo Zoltán Végh | Stars: Caroline Boulton, Marina Gera, Shawn Michael Clankie, Tom Nguyen

Votes: 515

A good-looking movie, nice creepy atmosphere, but not much else. The dialogue is barely audible, not in English when it feels like it should be, or both, and the story seems like little more than a formality. (3/10)

2. Berserker (1987)

R | 85 min | Horror

Six people renting a cabin in the woods of Utah run afoul of a legendary viking warrior who dons the claws and mouth of a bear, with no help in sight.

Director: Jefferson Richard | Stars: Joseph Alan Johnson, Greg Dawson, Valerie Sheldon, Shannon Engemann

Votes: 1,072

A group of young people go camping and get killed off by... *checks notes* an ancient Viking berserker. For some reason, most of the film tries to make it seem like it's a bear. Unless it actually was a bear at first, because the timing of some stuff does not line up.

4/10

3. Bikini Swamp Girl Massacre (2014)

Not Rated | 83 min | Horror

A group of beautiful bikini-clad girls go on a vacation in the swamp of the Florida Everglades, never to return.

Director: Aiden Dillard | Stars: Ted Vernon, Katie Rotolo, Nicole Soden, Chelsea Harshman

Votes: 248

Bikini Swamp Girl Massacre (2014) A very odd thing. It seems like a bad, but competently-made movie, with worse, and incompetently-made footage just kinda randomly edited in for some reason. I legitimately could not tell you what the plot was supposed to be, if there ever was one to begin with.

2/10

4. Bleed (2002 Video)

R | 82 min | Horror, Thriller

A young woman with murderous tendencies tries making new friends by joining an elite social club and in so doing, becomes the target of a masked killer bent on killing all her new friends.

Directors: Devin Hamilton, Dennis Petersen | Stars: Debbie Rochon, Danny Wolske, Allen Nabors, Orly Tepper

Votes: 729

This movie caught my attention because the cover made it look like the most generic early-2000s straight-to-video horror movie imaginable. And I guess I wasn't disappointed considering what I was expecting. (3/10)

5. Blood Lake (1987)

Not Rated | 82 min | Horror

6 teenagers are partying one weekend. One couple disappears, only to be found brutally murdered. A blood thirsty killer is stalking them. One by one bodies begin to show up, as they become prey to the vengeance-seeking maniac.

Director: Tim Boggs | Stars: Doug Barry, Angela Darter, Mike Kaufman, Andrea Adams

Votes: 685

Just a cheaply made pseudo-slasher set at a lake. But like, one that's kinda charming in that weird late-80s shot-on-video horror kind of way. Also, one of the stupidest and most hastily explained backstories I've ever seen. (4/10)

6. Bloodstream (1985)

80 min | Horror

After a low-budget horror filmmaker is swindled by a home video distributor, he decides to make a snuff film where he murders all those who have wronged him.

Director: Michael J. Murphy | Stars: Patrick Olliver, Jacqueline Logan, Caroline Aylward, Mark Wells

Votes: 166

A movie about a deranged filmmaker taking revenge on a sleazy distributor for stealing his film. Which is a fun concept, and one that is executed... in a style that one might reasonably expect from a super-low-budget slasher-type film. My only real complaint is a bit of padding in the form of characters watching movies, which I assume are clips from the director's previous works, which does start to get old after a while, although fortunately it stops short of trying to drag things out to a full 90 minutes.

5/10

7. Bunnyman (2011)

R | 90 min | Horror

A couple of dimwitted teens get chased by a killer dressed in a bunny suit.

Director: Carl Lindbergh | Stars: Cheryl Texiera, Matthew Albrecht, Alaina Gianci, Veronica Wylie

Votes: 1,428

A movie that seems to be aware of the fact that a killer in a bunny costume is its only notable feature, but also one that underutilizes that feature. Far from the worst, but still miles away from good. (3/10)

8. The Bunnyman Massacre (2014)

Not Rated | 90 min | Horror

Bodies pile up as Bunnyman indiscriminately slaughters anything that crosses his path in a mutually beneficial relationship that gives Joe plenty of beef jerky to sell in his local store.

Director: Carl Lindbergh | Stars: David Scott, Joshua Lang, Julianne Dowler, Jennifer June Ross

Votes: 960

Now instead of a lazy pseudo-slasher, it's a lazy and incredibly uncomfortable torture porn. But if you like women being assaulted and scenes ripped off from much better movies, this is the Bunnyman for you. (3/10)

9. Bunnyman Vengeance (2017)

108 min | Horror

The deadly adventures of Bunnyman continue in the third and final flatulent film in the Bunnyman trilogy.

Director: Carl Lindbergh | Stars: Diana Prince, Bradley Bundlie, Debby Gerber, Marshal Hilton

Votes: 418

A movie that adds new things to the Bunnyman series. Things like plot, and backstory, and characters whose names matter. Sure, it's a low bar to clear, but definitely the best of the Bunnyman trilogy. (4/10)

10. The Butcher (2006)

R | 90 min | Horror, Thriller

A tragic car accident in the middle of nowhere finds six stranded college students fighting for their lives after making a horrifying discovery in a remote farmhouse in this rural frightener.

Director: Edward Gorsuch | Stars: Catherine Wreford, Tom Nagel, Myiea Coy, Alan Ritchson

Votes: 1,661

A bog-standard mid-2000s pseudo-slasher. A group of young people stumble into a situation in which they get murdered one by one. It's got all the window dressing, but no real substance beneath it.

4/10

11. Camp Slaughter (2005 Video)

R | 94 min | Comedy, Horror

CAMP DAZE takes you back to the days of tube socks, bongs hits and short shorts, throws in a quiet summer camp full of blood and mayhem and watches the fun unfold.

Director: Alex Pucci | Stars: Kyle Lupo, Anika C. McFall, Joanna Suhl, Jon Fleming

Votes: 566

A super fun idea, a group of modern people stumbles into a summer camp that’s trapped in a time loop reliving a 1981 massacre every night. It’s one of those things where they had a really great concept, but the execution just ends up making you wish it could have been done better.

4/10

12. Camp Massacre (2014)

Not Rated | 130 min | Comedy, Horror

Ten obese men appear on a competitive reality show geared toward weight-loss. As contestants disappear in the night it becomes apparent that a killer is on the loose.

Directors: Jim O'Rear, Daniel Emery Taylor | Stars: Jim O'Rear, Daniel Emery Taylor, Dick Warlock, Bree Olson

Votes: 321

In theory, a horror comedy about a massacre at a reality TV fat camp. In reality, mostly just two hours—yes, TWO HOURS—of juvenile fat jokes. The saddest part though, is that there's an almost okay movie underneath that. (2/10)

13. Camp Twilight (2020)

TV-MA | 93 min | Comedy, Horror

After discovering they are at risk of failing to graduate, 6 students agree to a weekend camping trip for extra credit. Lead by their teachers, Ms. Bloom and Mr. Warner, the students arrive... See full summary »

Director: Brandon Amelotte | Stars: Felissa Rose, Barry Jay Minoff, Steven Chase, Dave Sheridan

Votes: 148

Fairly standard "Teens get killed in wilderness" movie, although it's really not so much wilderness as it is a park. The entire backstory is delivered in one big monologue at the end and doesn't really explain anything. (4/10)

14. Cheerleader Camp (1988)

R | 89 min | Comedy, Horror, Thriller

A group of cheerleaders become the targets of an unknown killer at a remote summer camp.

Director: John Quinn | Stars: Betsy Russell, Leif Garrett, Lucinda Dickey, Lorie Griffin

Votes: 3,961

A movie that starts off like a wacky teen comedy, then turns into a slasher. It tries to be more than that, but doesn't really succeed. It's not bad, just very forgettable. (5/10)

15. Decampitated (1998)

R | 92 min | Comedy, Horror

Seven friends are going camping at the infamous DeCamp acres for a weekend. But they crash their car and have to walk, encountering a psychopath who tries to kill them one by one.

Director: Matt Cunningham | Stars: Amy Gordon, Mike Hart, Steve Ladden, Wayne Larsen

Votes: 842

An entirely watchable horror comedy, which if you know me you will know is high praise for a horror comedy. It seems to have been made with at least some basic understanding of the slasher subgenre and does play a bit with the associated tropes for some good gags. It is overall just a bit of wacky dumb fun, with something of an emphasis on the "Dumb," as a lot of the comedy is based around the characters all just being very stupid. However, they do overuse some of the bits to the point where it goes from wacky to tiresome, and there so some problematic Edgy 90s Humor™ in there which is just uncomfortable to watch. So, worth a watch if you're willing to put up with its faults.

5/10

16. Derelict (2017)

78 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

Three friends find themselves fighting for their lives when their urban exploration goes horribly wrong.

Directors: Cristian Broadhurst, James Broadhurst | Stars: Tristan Balz, James Broadhurst, Justin Burford, Amy Celisano

Votes: 271

Urban explorers getting stalked through underground tunnels by a mysterious masked man. Neat idea, but it doesn't really seem like they knew where to go beyond that basic concept. They tried, but it just came out kinda meh. (4/10)

17. Doll Murder Spree (2017)

55 min | Horror

A group of college students join their teacher for a weekend of filming for extra credit. Documenting the local Hell House that's haunted by the family who were murdered there. Little do they know they would be trying to survive the night.

Director: Reyna Young | Stars: Shotzi Blackheart, Connie Jo Sechrist, Marv Blauvelt, Moses J. Moseley

Votes: 43

There are lots of things I could talk about in this movie, but the most distracting one is the cheap film grain filter applied to the entire movie. The only saving grace is the 55-minute runtime. (3/10)

18. Don't Go in the Woods (1981)

R | 82 min | Horror, Thriller

Four friends camping in the woods inadvertently stumble upon the domain of a maniacal killer.

Director: James Bryan | Stars: Nick Cleland, Mary Gail Artz, James P. Hayden, Angie Brown

Votes: 3,502

The best kind of worst movie. Poorly written, poorly acted, horrible effects, and not a minute of it that isn't fun. Barely any plot and filled with random cutaway murders. It is absolute unadulterated campy trash that doesn’t try to be anything else.

5/10

19. Fear of Clowns (2004 Video)

R | 106 min | Horror, Thriller

An artist with coulrophobia ("fear of clowns") is stalked by a murderous clown resembling one of the ones she paints.

Director: Kevin Kangas | Stars: Rick Ganz, Jacqueline Reres, Mark Lassise, Carl Randolph

Votes: 910

The one with the buff shirtless clown who uses a medieval battleaxe. Unfortunately, that's about the only noteworthy aspect. The plot just kinda lies flat, and keeps throwing things at you that never matter. (3/10)

20. Fear of Clowns 2 (2007 Video)

Shivers the Clown is back with a vengeance in this sequel to the Lionsgate hit video from 2004! And the ante is upped when he's back with two new psychotic clowns to help him kill Lynn ... See full summary »

Director: Kevin Kangas | Stars: Jacqueline Reres, Mark Lassise, Frank Lama, Johnny Alonso

Votes: 205

Three times the clowns, one-third the plot. Also, more—but not better—kills. The beefy clown and detective from the first movie are back... I guess the lady is too, but she's really more of a prop in this one. (3/10)

21. Final Exam (1981)

R | 89 min | Horror, Thriller

A psycho killer shows up on college campus to slash up pretty co-eds and dumb jocks.

Director: Jimmy Huston | Stars: Cecile Bagdadi, Joel S. Rice, Ralph Brown, DeAnna Robbins

Votes: 4,625

The prototypical pseudo-slasher. A group of generic college students are stalked and murdered by... some dude. Less of a story than just a sequence of events featuring a killer so arbitrary that you could easily replace him with a bear without having any major impact on the story.

4/10

22. Found Footage (I) (2011)

64 min | Horror

Live footage found by police of a serial killer who documented, first hand, his undertakings.

Directors: Samuel Bartlett, Matt Doran | Stars: Matt Doran, Lisa Fineberg, Alison Gallagher, Geraldine Hakewill

Votes: 315

I understand what this movie was trying to do, put the camera in the hands of the killer so we experience the events from their perspective while retaining the objectivity of the lens. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t done very well. Rather than a look into the deranged mind of a killer, it comes across more as just a series of events without any weight or emotion.

4/10

23. FrightWorld (2006)

R | 103 min | Horror

Nine people find themselves trapped in a warehouse that contains the remains of the old Frightworld Amusement Park - a place haunted by the spirit of Verden Fell, a serial killer who died there a year before.

Directors: David R. Williams, Mike Bohatch | Stars: Andrew Roth, Kamillia Kataxenna Kova, Dina Cataldi, Tiffany Pulvino

Votes: 190

A very nice setting, that unfortunately has an edgy mid-2000s slasher happening in it. One of those moves where you keep waiting for anything to make sense, then it literally just ends with a lazy 10-minute exposition dump. (3/10)

24. Garden Tool Massacre (1997)

Unrated | 70 min | Horror

Psychopath Charles Scavolini escapes the mental institution and returns to his home. Now occupied by a gang of partying teenagers, Scavolini takes back his property with brutal blood lust.

Director: David Hinds | Stars: Richard Boulton, Tammy Dennis, Steven Garbett, Peter Hicken

Votes: 72

A weird shot on consumer-level video movie that somehow got an official release more than twenty years later. Also not that many garden tool killings. (2/10) But like, a high 2.

25. Ghost Keeper (1981)

R | 89 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller

Three friends on a New Year's Eve snowmobiling excursion find themselves stranded at an abandoned lodge where the elderly female innkeeper is concealing a sinister secret.

Director: Jim Makichuk | Stars: Riva Spier, Murray Ord, Sheri McFadden, Georgie Collins

Votes: 1,274

A move with a nice atmosphere and eerie secluded location, but not much else. There is a story, and in general it seems like it's going somewhere. Like, information is being given which feels like it is building up to something, but then it just doesn't, ending with a weak twist that feels like they ran out of money to film the real ending—incidentally, that is what the legends say is what happened.

26. Haunt (I) (2019)

R | 92 min | Horror, Thriller

69 Metascore

Directors: Scott Beck, Bryan Woods | Stars: Katie Stevens, Will Brittain, Lauryn Alisa McClain, Andrew Lewis Caldwell

Votes: 37,627

Pretty good haunted house deathtrap movie. Nice setting and atmosphere and some pretty cool killers. Overall fun watch. However, −1 point for giving the final girl a completely unnecessary Tragic Backstory™ that serves no purpose other than demonstrating a profound lack of storytelling ability.

5/10

27. Haunted Maze (2013)

88 min | Horror, Thriller

Clancy and his carnival of misfits, roll into a sleepy mid-western town for their annual Halloween festival. Some are looking for a good time. Clancy has something else on his mind.

Director: Susan Engel | Stars: David Mingrino, John Beasley, Delaney Driscoll, Brian Krause

Votes: 153

Another case of someone thinking they're making a deep "psychological thriller," when they're actually making D-grade garbage. Also an astonishing lack of understanding of basic filmmaking and storytelling techniques. (2/10)

28. Hayride Slaughter (2001 Video)

Director: Gary Whitson | Stars: Tina Krause, Jim O'Rear, Dean Paul, Debbie D

Votes: 45

This movie starts as a fairly standard low-end pseudo-slasher, and ends with complete nonsense. Also, a full 20 minutes of the runtime are taken up by a magic show. Just, a magic show, in the middle of the movie for no reason other than to eat up runtime.

It's also probably worth noting that this movie was produced by a company that largely makes weird fetish videos. And when I say "Weird fetish" I don't mean feet or adult babies, I mean like torture, strangulation, drowning, cannibalism, and quicksand.

3/10

29. Hell Fest (2018)

R | 89 min | Horror, Thriller

26 Metascore

A masked serial killer turns a horror-themed amusement park into his own personal playground, terrorizing a group of friends while the rest of the patrons believe that it is all part of the show.

Director: Gregory Plotkin | Stars: Cynthea Mercado, Stephen Conroy, Amy Forsyth, Reign Edwards

Votes: 19,437 | Gross: $11.11M

An overall very fun pseudo-slasher set in a spooky time amusement park. However, it is a much better visual experience than it is a narrative one. The sets and cinematography are beautiful, but the characters and story are more than a little lackluster by comparison.

(7/10)

30. Hellbent (2004)

R | 84 min | Horror, Thriller

45 Metascore

Halloween in West Hollywood, two guys making out in a park are interrupted by a serial killer. Later that night, a group of gay kids decide to visit to the site of the murders.

Director: Paul Etheredge | Stars: Dylan Fergus, Bryan Kirkwood, Hank Harris, Andrew Levitas

Votes: 2,725 | Gross: $0.19M

A movie that's really only notable for being "The first gay slasher flick," and I guess it succeeds in that, at least stylistically. It is on par with any low-budget early-2000s slasher, but lacks the key slasher story elements. (4/10)

31. Hide and Go Shriek (1988)

R | 90 min | Horror, Thriller

A group of teenagers spend the night in a furniture store for a graduation party. A psycho killer starts hunting them down one by one.

Director: Skip Schoolnik | Stars: Bunky Jones, Brittain Frye, Annette Sinclair, George Thomas

Votes: 2,024

Somehow not the only movie I've seen about teens partying after hours in a furniture store. It has some problematic elements, and isn't really good enough to bother with despite that. (5/10)

32. Hollow Gate (1988)

Not Rated | 76 min | Horror

At a Halloween party, a young boy is almost killed by his drunken, alcoholic father. Ten years afterward, the boy goes on a murder spree.

Director: Ray Di Zazzo | Stars: Addison Randall, Katrina Alexy, Richard Dry, Patricia Jacques

A man kills a handful of people in different personas. There's a flimsy plot holding it together, but it very much exists just to facilitate that concept. The characters are irrelevant, and just never matter to begin with. (3/10)

33. Island of Blood (1982)

Unrated | 82 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

A group of actors are assembled in a small island to film a low-budget movie. Soon, they begin to fall prey to a mysterious killer who uses the lyrics of a weird song to determine his method of murder.

Director: William T. Naud | Stars: Marie-Alise Recasner, Rick Dean, Ron Gardner, Terence Goodman

Votes: 643

A movie that tried to have a clever twist ending, but the "Oh yeah that makes sense in retrospect" part was a bit too obvious to be ignored at the time... and the movie just kinda ignores it. (5/10)

34. Just Before Dawn (1981)

R | 90 min | Horror, Thriller

Five young people venture into the backwoods of Oregon to claim a property, and find themselves being stalked by a hulking, machete-wielding psychopath.

Director: Jeff Lieberman | Stars: George Kennedy, Mike Kellin, Chris Lemmon, Gregg Henry

Votes: 7,144

One of the best "slasher" movies you've never heard of. Great wilderness atmosphere, very deliberate pacing, and some beautifully set up shots. Seriously, this movie has intentional and artful cinematography, which can be quite surprising given the reasonable expectations. An example of "pseudo-slasher" as a descriptor of a film's structure, not an insult.

35. Lake Alice (2017)

TV-14 | 78 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

Director: Ben Milliken | Stars: Caroline Tudor, Brad Schmidt, Laura Niemi, Peter O'Brien

About 40 minutes worth of movie, stretched out to 78 with painfully tedious melodrama. Much of the dialogue is barely audible, and many of the scenes are incredibly underlit. At least the killer looks pretty cool. (2/10)

36. Madison County (2011)

An interesting enough premise, but one that is barely used in the movie. Like, there was legitimate potential for mystery and suspense, but nothing was ever explored even in the slightest. (4/10)

37. The Majorettes (1986)

R | 92 min | Action, Crime, Horror

A high school majorettes are being methodically killed by a mysterious masked figure. Meanwhile, a local gang are involved in suspicious activities around the school.

Director: S. William Hinzman | Stars: Kevin Kindlin, Terrie Godfrey, Mark V. Jevicky, Sueanne Seamens

Votes: 1,162

An okay slasher-type affair, until drug dealers kill the final girl to set up a revenge-killing spree, dropping the original plot in the process. Like, they literally set up the ending of the story, then just kinda didn't do it. (4/10)

38. Night Killer (1990)

Not Rated | 93 min | Crime, Drama, Horror

39. Ogroff (1983)

90 min | Horror

Director: Norbert Moutier | Stars: Robert Alaux, Françoise Deniel, Pierre Pattin, Alain Petit

Votes: 389

Legend has it that this movie came into being when a French video store owner just kinda decided to make his own movie to rent out at his shop. And when someone makes a movie with no idea what they're doing, you usually get one of two results: Absolute garbage, or an accidental Dadaist masterpiece. OGROFF is the latter, a fever dream of sights and sounds disconnected from any logical reality.

It is a movie that must be experienced, its true nature cannot possibly be conveyed via the imperfect medium of formal language.

A... I guess real estate-themed pseudo-slasher. Fairly formulaic and repetitive with subplots that go nowhere, and a main plot that just kinda just goes along without the characters having any meaningful impact on it. (4/10)

41. Party Night (I) (2017)

Another standard pseudo-slasher, young people go to a place and get killed one by one by an arbitrary assailant. The ending was so rushed and inconsequential that I literally forgot how it ended the next day and had to rewatch it, and now that’s the only part of the movie I actually remember.

A man returns to his family farm for the first time after coming out. You might assume that this fact relates to the plot in some way, or comes up more than once. It does not. The plot does not relate to anything in any way. But it is a fun vapid watch.

43. Playing with Dolls (2015)

A visually entertaining movie, but very little substance. The lead actress delivers her lines so awkwardly, and with such a thick accent, that it sounds like she learned them phonetically and doesn't actually know what she's saying.

44. Playing with Dolls: Bloodlust (2016)

TV-MA | 81 min | Action, Comedy, Horror

Director: Rene Perez | Stars: Richard Tyson, Karin Brauns, Colin Bryant, Elonda Seawood

Votes: 531

A slightly better story than the first one, a horror reality tv show being used to lure in victims. Which is a cool concept, and one I'd really like to see in a better movie, but overall this is just more of the first one. Also notable is that it features another lead actress with a very thick European accent, which makes me suspicious about how these movies are being cast.

The killer escapes from the poorly-executed scenario of the first two movies... and finds his own European woman to stalk in an isolated cabin. So basically, the same movie for a third time, but now with even less plot.

46. Cry Havoc (2020)

This movie... starts with a clip show of the previous three, and ends with discount Charles Bronson fistfighting the killer. Or rather, it just kinda stops a bit after that. Which is how they all end, they just stop without resolution. Saying this is the worst Playing With Dolls movie does not do justice to how bad of a movie it is just in general.

Director: Drew Marvick | Stars: Cameron Lee Vamp, LeeAnna Vamp, John Molinaro, Sally Burnswello

Votes: 830

A horror comedy that doesn't have much to offer as either. The juvenile jokes go on for way too long, and the effects are on-par with a high school film project. Also, not even enough nudity to be worth it for that. (3/10)

48. The Pool (2001)

R | 92 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

Three couples go on a camping trip in the woods of southern California during the summer, where a deformed man is stalking their camp.

Director: Edwin Brown | Stars: Debbie Thureson, Steve Bond, Lori Lethin, Robert Wald

Votes: 1,863

A solid people getting killed in the woods movie, but not incredibly memorable. It has neither the excellent cinematography of Just Before Dawn, or the absurd trashiness of Don't Go in the Woods, just landing kinda middle of the road. (5/10)

50. Rave Party Massacre (2018)

Thriller

Set in 1992, during a hallucinogenic drug nightmare infused with illicit partying and forbidden sex, young ravers discover the murderous world of the DeadThirsty.

Director: Jason Winn

Votes: 20

A movie from 2018, set in 1992, that looks like it's set in 2002. It felt like they were trying to make a statement, but any intent just got lost under characters shouting at each other for no reason in particular. (3/10)

51. The Redwood Massacre (2014)

82 min | Horror

What begins as a exciting camping trip to the legendary Redwood murder site, takes a terrifying turn when the innocent campers discover the legend is about to become a nasty and bloody reality.

Director: David Ryan Keith | Stars: Mark Wood, Lisa Cameron, Lisa Livingstone, Rebecca Wilkie

Votes: 2,377

A woodsy slasher with just enough torture porn to make you suspicious that they were just trying to pad out the run time. The only real notable aspect is how incredibly Scottish it is. (4/10)

52. Redwood Massacre: Annihilation (2020)

104 min | Horror, Mystery

The hunters become the hunted after a stranger obsessed with the Redwood Farm murders convinces bereaved family members to venture into the wilderness in hope of proving the existence of the notorious burlap masked maniac.

Director: David Ryan Keith | Stars: Danielle Harris, Damien Puckler, Gary Kasper, Jon Campling

A sequel that despite directly following the original, isn't sure if it's set in the UK or US. They also give the killer a new backstory that's even less interesting than the first one. Overall, just a movie that you wait for to end. (4/10)

53. Rift (I) (2011)

A shaky enough movie on its own, but given a weird and completely unnecessary framing device that only gets worse as it goes bouncing around between various plots and times. So basically, a total mess of a movie. (3/10)

54. Scare Zone (2009)

Another "Murder in the haunted attraction" movie, and one that is something of a mixed bag. Overall entertaining, but a bit all over the place at times, never really seeming sure exactly how far to lean in any one direction. (5/10)

Not Rated | 90 min | Horror, Thriller

A group of young filmmakers encounter a serial killer while shooting their first independent movie.

Director: Keith Walley | Stars: Luciano Saber, Kate Norby, Cory Almeida, Raquel Horton

One of those horror movies about people making a horror movie, which I generally like. However, this one feels like it's taking just a bit too much inspiration from Scream... or Scream 3, and just not doing it very well. (4/10)

56. Scream Park (2012)

Not Rated | 85 min | Horror

A failed amusement park owner devises a plan to commit gruesome murders in the park as a publicity stunt to sell tickets.

Director: Cary Hill | Stars: Wendy Wygant, Steve Rudzinski, Kevin 'ohGr' Ogilvie, Alicia Marie Marcucci

A fairly decent movie about employees getting murdered during an after hours party at an amusement park. Unfortunately, all promotional materials give away the big plot reveal, essentially making it all pointless. Also, the much-advertised Doug Bradly appearance is just a cameo.

57. Shellmont County Massacre (2019)

TV-MA | 92 min | Horror

The sheriff of a small southern town struggles to keep it's occupants safe when a masked maniac begins taking lives.

Director: Gus Trapani | Stars: Roderick Klimek, Matthew Lafferty, Rick Rodgers, Pablo Andrade

A movie that is competently made, but one that I have no idea why anyone would waste their time making. I've seen movies with no story before, but this one doesn't even have a concept. Even Doctor Bloodbath had a concept beyond "man kills." This movie does not. It is just a series of events occurring on screen.

Director: Rob Avery | Stars: Lalaneya Albright, Andrea Anderson, Tiffany Apan, Asenath Avery

A chaotic piece of backyard horror that's kinda like a better version of Video Violence 2, which isn't exactly a high bar to set. It also just kinda keeps going for like a half-hour after the ending. (3/10)

59. Slaughterhouse (1987)

Director: Mike O'Mahony | Stars: Mike O'Mahony, James Costa, Lauren Myers, Lewis Beaver

A killer clown movie that seems to have the singular goal of being pointlessly edgy. So, I guess mission accomplished. (2/10)

61. Slumber Party Slasherthon (2012 Video)

Not Rated | 67 min | Horror

A killer compilation of clips from the RHR Home Video library as viewed by 5 girls during a slumber party.

Director: Dustin Ferguson | Stars: Nina Colgan, Tara Hinkley, Breana Mitchell, Marcus Tegtmeier

A somewhat random collection of scenes from four other movies, framed with a very minimal narrative about a party being attacked by a drill-wielding killer. (2/10)

62. StageFright (1987)

A group of stage actors lock themselves in the theater for a rehearsal of their upcoming musical production, unaware that an escaped psychopath has sneaked into the theater with them.

Director: Michele Soavi | Stars: David Brandon, Richard Barkeley, Barbara Cupisti, Domenico Fiore

A group of theatre performers stalked and killed during a late-night rehearsal by a man in an ornate owl mask. Despite how classy and high-brow as that sounds, it is still a violent bloody spectacle at heart. (7/10)

63. Caesar and Otto's Summer Camp Massacre (2009)

Not Rated | 76 min | Comedy, Horror

Caesar, an effete tough guy and his slovenly half brother, Otto, have signed up as summer camp counselors. But when the mysterious Carrie shows up, the other counselors start disappearing one by one.

Director: Dave Campfield | Stars: Dave Campfield, Paul Chomicki, Felissa Rose, Brinke Stevens

Votes: 264 | Gross: $0.03M

For a "wacky slasher comedy" it could have been worse, but not better. It's got the lovely and talented Felissa Rose though, with accompanying Sleepaway Camp references. So, that's something. (3/10)

64. Surgikill (1989)

Not Rated | 88 min | Comedy, Horror

A masked killer is killing off doctors, nurses, and patients at a poorly run Los Angeles hospital.

Director: Andy Milligan | Stars: Bouvier, Dan Foster-Jones, Michael Lunsford, Douglas M. Eames

A horror comedy that makes Scary Movie seem reserved and sophisticated by comparison. A pointless collection of gags that it's hard to believe anyone thought were funny, going on far longer than anyone should have to endure. (1/20)

65. Sweatshop (2009)

Unrated | 90 min | Horror

A group of friends break into an abandoned factory in order to throw a impromptu party; unaware that it is not as empty as they originally believed.

Director: Stacy Davidson | Stars: Ashley Kay, Melanie Donihoo, Peyton Wetzel, Danielle Jones

A movie very of its time, very grimy, very shaky, and just a little edgier than strictly necessary. However, decent effects and believable counterculture characters. Also, I believe technically there was a plot. (4/10)

66. Terror at Tenkiller (1986)

Not Rated | 87 min | Horror, Thriller

Two girlfriends try to relax at Lake Tenkiller, but a slasher won't let them.

Director: Ken Meyer | Stars: Michael Shamus Wiles, Stacey Logan, Michele Merchant, Dale Buckmaster

Your standard pseudo-slasher: random dude kills for no reason in particular. However, it is also bold enough to not only never explain the killer's motivation, but to actually point out that they aren't even going to try. (4/10)

This movie literally ends with them about to unmask the killer, then telling you you'll have to wait until part 2... Then a scene where they just say it was the twin brother of another character. At least the clown rides a motorcycle. (2/10)

A movie with an interesting premise, but also one that almost completely fails to deliver on that potential in that premise. The actual build to "Killer wrestler movie" is slow at first, but then just kinda happens. The part that should have been the major story arc of the movie is relegated to a weird murder montage, while spending way too much time with the weird other plot about loan sharks. And like, the two storylines do end in the same place, but much less intersecting purposefully than just awkwardly colliding. The wrestling action is good, and there is some fun to be found here, but all of the positive qualities just make you wish the rest of the movie were better.

69. Zombie Island Massacre (1984)

R | 95 min | Horror, Thriller

Americans on vacation in the Caribbean take a tour of a nearby island at night and watch a local voodoo ritual. Soon after, they find themselves stranded on the island and under attack by unseen foes. One by one they meet violent ends.

Director: John Carter | Stars: David Broadnax, Rita Jenrette, Tom Cantrell, Diane Clayre Holub

This is very much the kind of movie that you have to temper your expectations for. You might expect that Zombie Island Massacre would feature some kind of zombie massacre, on an island, and if you did, you would be greatly disappointed. There is a zombie, there is and island, and there is a massacre which takes place on the island where the zombie is seen, but does not involve that or any other zombies in any way. So as long as you go into it expecting "Island Where A Zombie Is Briefly Seen Massacre," then it's overall a fairly decent viewing experience. However, there is a somewhat disappointing ending that just kinda throws out all of the potentially-interesting possibilities in favor of a dull but unexpected twist.
