Director: Steffen Haars | Stars: Tim Haars, Bo Maerten, Michiel Romeyn, Henry van Loon

Votes: 2,328

[Review] ------------------------------------------------------- Date Watched: Monday, January. 3, 2022 | How I Watched: blu-ray on PlayStation 3

✮✮✮½/✮✮✮✮✮

Favourite scene: Arriving at Dick Maas' film set

Best actor: Waldemar Torenstra

Surprised at how much I laughed during this film. I lost it when Dennie Christian, Guust Flater & De Marsupilami - Wij Zijn Twee Vrienden played and almost every scene with Waldemar Torenstra was comedy gold.

I think this film works best if you know a lot about Dutch culture. Some moments will be lost in translation.

2. Promare (2019)

PG-13 | 111 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

76 Metascore

A futuristic firefighting mecha service is created to protect the world.

Director: Hiroyuki Imaishi | Stars: John Eric Bentley, Steve Blum, Johnny Yong Bosch, Melissa Fahn

Votes: 5,204

[Review] ------------------------------------------------------- Date Watched: Wednesday, January. 12, 2022 | How I Watched: blu-ray on PlayStation 3

✮✮½/✮✮✮✮✮

Favourite scene: The Start of the BURNED

Best actor: I really don't know

I have to be completely honest and say I might've missed 50% of this film, even if I watched it completely, but the whole film is too chaotic. I missed some subtitles due to focusing on the action.

3. Promare: Galo-hen (2019)

10 min | Animation, Short, Action

A prequel set one day before the events of the Promare (2019) film.

Director: Hiroyuki Imaishi | Stars: Ken'ichi Matsuyama, Ayane Sakura, Hiroyuki Yoshino, Tetsu Inada

Votes: 202

Date Watched: Wednesday, January. 12, 2022 | How I Watched: blu-ray on PlayStation 3

After finished Promare, I decided to watch this one. I wished this was in the film itself, because it builds on some characters and story beats.

4. Promare: Lio-hen (2019)

10 min | Animation, Short, Action

A second prequel set one day before the events of the Promare (2019) film.

Director: Hiroyuki Imaishi | Stars: Taichi Saotome, Ken'ichi Matsuyama, Ayane Sakura, Rikiya Koyama

Votes: 199

Date Watched: Wednesday, January. 12, 2022 | How I Watched: blu-ray on PlayStation 3

I am not a fan of Lio. His actions always contradict his goals. Out of the two shorts this was the worst one.

5. City on Fire (1987)

R | 101 min | Action, Crime, Drama

An undercover cop infiltrates a gang of thieves who plan to rob a jewelry store.

Director: Ringo Lam | Stars: Chow Yun-Fat, Yueh Sun, Danny Lee, Carrie Ng

Votes: 7,263

[Review] ------------------------------------------------------- Date Watched: Friday, January. 14, 2022 | How I Watched: youtube on tv

✮✮✮½/✮✮✮✮✮

Favourite scene: The Second Robbery

Best actor: Chow Yun-Fat

This is the first film I've seen directed by Ringo Lam and I am a bit underwhelmed, but that was mostly due to the second act being really slow moving. But the action sequences are excellent. And the final ten minutes were filled to the brim with tension, so this is my favourite first time watch on the year (so far).

6. Used Cars (1980)

R | 113 min | Comedy

68 Metascore

When the owner of a struggling used car lot is killed, it's up to the lot's hot-shot salesman to save the property from falling into the hands of the owner's ruthless brother and used-car rival.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Kurt Russell, Jack Warden, Gerrit Graham, Frank McRae

✮✮✮½/✮✮✮✮✮

Favourite scene: Those prices are too Fucking high!!

Best actor: Kurt Russell

Another film I wanted to watch for a few years now. It was a lot darker than I expected it to be. The second and third act feel like a different film altogether, and they are worse.

7. A Hijacking (2012)

R | 103 min | Drama, Thriller

82 Metascore

The crew of a Danish cargo ship is hijacked by Somali pirates who proceed to engage in escalating negotiations with authorities in Copenhagen.

Director: Tobias Lindholm | Stars: Pilou Asbæk, Søren Malling, Dar Salim, Roland Møller

Votes: 17,441 | Gross: $0.41M

[Review] ------------------------------------------------------- Date Watched: Wednesday, January. 19, 2022 | How I Watched: blu-ray on PlayStation 3

✮✮✮/✮✮✮✮✮

Favourite scene: Under Gunpoint

Best actor: Pilou Asbæk

I had heard some good things about this film and decided to sit down and watch it. I was left a bit cold on it after viewing it mostly because of how the story is presented. It devotes too much time on the authorities and too little on the other side (on the freighter). There’s a long stretch in the second act where the film it is more focused on the time outside of negotiation which got old really quickly.

Pilou Asbæk is fantastic here, as is the rest of the acting cast. Søren Malling is overused though. Hildur Guðnadóttir is credited as the composer of the original soundtrack, but one of her songs (of one of her albums) is used during the end credits. Which is a shame, because she is one of my favourite modern (film) composers.

I am glad I watched it, but I don’t feel like revisiting it in a few years.

8. Short Cuts (1993)

R | 188 min | Comedy, Drama

81 Metascore

The day-to-day lives of several suburban Los Angeles residents.

Director: Robert Altman | Stars: Andie MacDowell, Julianne Moore, Tim Robbins, Bruce Davison

Votes: 47,382 | Gross: $6.11M

[Review] ------------------------------------------------------- Date Watched: Wednesday, January. 26, 2022 | How I Watched: VLC Media Player on laptop [connected to tv]

✮✮✮½/✮✮✮✮✮

Favourite scene: The Trust Will Come Out

Best actor: Andie MacDowell for the dramatic performance and Tim Robbins for playing an douchebag.

This film was on my watchlist for some years now. A large part of my curiosity was the fact that I didn’t really know too much about its plot/story. But I was taken aback by its running time. This film is just over three hours long.

And after watching it I am a little let down by it. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either. I do prefer Magnolia over this, mostly because I was drawn more into it, emotionally and mentally by its themes and characters. Even if both are as long as each other.

9. Herman vermoordt mensen (2021 TV Movie)

88 min | Crime

The depressed Herman lives in a retirement home and gets no professional help due to bureaucracy. His daughter is also desperate because he is an alcoholic. He kills someone so he has to go to prison he can be taken care of there.

Directors: Joost Reijmers, Thomas van der Ree | Stars: Aus Greidanus, Fockeline Ouwerkerk, Melody Klaver, Mustafa Duygulu

Votes: 429

[Review] ------------------------------------------------------- Date Watched: Friday, January. 28, 2022 | How I Watched: recorded off Nederland 3 and watched via Ziggo Mediabox

✮✮✮/✮✮✮✮✮

Favourite scene: The Future for Yourself

Best actor: Aus Greidanus sr.

I had an exam on Friday, so I decided to watch a film a few hours before the exam. [Wasn't expecting the suicide ending. That hit hard.]

Also, I wish they would quit using Film Festival release dates for official dates.

10. My Blind Date with Life (2017)

111 min | Biography, Comedy, Drama

An ambitious young man struggles to achieve his dream of becoming an employee in a Munich luxury hotel despite being strongly visually impaired.

Director: Marc Rothemund | Stars: Kostja Ullmann, Jacob Matschenz, Anna Maria Mühe, Johann von Bülow

Votes: 5,779

✮✮✮✮/✮✮✮✮✮ | ♛

Favourite scene: How to Make Drink?

Best actor: Kostja Ullmann

Watched on my own for German classes [to learn some German outside of learning for it]. Quite surprised by it. The blindness of the main character also leads to some creative directorial choices, without being overbearing.

11. Wings of Desire (1987)

PG-13 | 128 min | Drama, Fantasy, Romance

79 Metascore

An angel tires of his purely ethereal life of merely overseeing the human activity of Berlin's residents, and longs for the tangible joys of physical existence when he falls in love with a mortal.

Director: Wim Wenders | Stars: Bruno Ganz, Solveig Dommartin, Otto Sander, Curt Bois

Votes: 77,005 | Gross: $3.33M

[Review] ------------------------------------------------------- Date Watched: Friday, February. 4, 2022 | How I Watched: blu-ray on PlayStation 3

✮✮✮✮½/✮✮✮✮✮ | ♛

Favourite scene: At the Nick Cave concert

Best actor: Bruno Ganz

Wow... I'm not a fan of Arthouse Cinema, but this was one of the best ones I've seen out of that niche.

Bruno Ganz delivered a excellent performance, as does the rest of the acting cast, Wim Wenders' directing is superb and 80s Berlin is such a great location.

At the start I placed the film at 5/5 stars, then lowered it to 4/5 stars after all the Peter Falk scenes and the dialogue being a bit too pretentious, but after you find out what Peter Falk's role is in the film and the film picking up again I raised it to 4.5/5 stars.

[Also love seeing Nick Cave!]

My favourite first time watch of the year.

12. Next Door (1990)

3 min | Animation, Short

An old square-headed man tries to watch TV while a little girl makes a playful ruckus outside.

Director: Pete Docter | Star: Brooke O'Neill

Votes: 307

Date Watched: Friday, February. 4, 2022 | How I Watched: youtube on tv

I always wanted to know what Pete Docter's early short films would look like. I really enjoyed this one. Fuck, I miss hand drawn animation.

13. Glass (1958)

11 min | Documentary, Short

Documentary about Dutch glass production in the 50s.

Director: Bert Haanstra

Votes: 1,149

Date Watched: Saturday, February. 5, 2022 | How I Watched: youtube on tv

Excellent short. Looks fantastic in 4K.

14. The King's Man (2021)

R | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Thriller

44 Metascore

In the early years of the 20th century, the Kingsman agency is formed to stand against a cabal plotting a war to wipe out millions.

Director: Matthew Vaughn | Stars: Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Rhys Ifans, Harris Dickinson

Votes: 173,489 | Gross: $37.18M

[Review] ------------------------------------------------------- Date Watched: Monday, February. 7, 2022 | How I Watched: Pathé Zwolle

✮✮½/✮✮✮✮✮

Favourite scene: The Quiet Fight

Best actor: Djimon Hounsou

My first watch in theaters of 2022. Really let down by it. It doesn't know what it wants to be, an anti-war statement, a political drama or a Kingsman action film(*).

I'm done with the Kingsman franchise. The first trailer [I barely watch trailers to begin with] gave every action sequence away. Great job assholes.

(*) = at least we got CGI goats [this film probably has the worst CGI I've seen in theaters since Benedetta, and this has a bigger budget.]

15. Licorice Pizza (2021)

R | 133 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

90 Metascore

The story of Alana Kane and Gary Valentine growing up, running around and going through the treacherous navigation of first love in the San Fernando Valley, 1973.

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson | Stars: Alana Haim, Cooper Hoffman, Sean Penn, Tom Waits

Votes: 140,255

[Review] ------------------------------------------------------- Date Watched: Tuesday, February. 15, 2022 | How I Watched: Fraterhuis Zwolle

✮✮✮½/✮✮✮✮✮

Favourite scene: At the Expo

Best actor: Cooper Hoffman

I was waiting to watch this one because of the big theater of my city not showing this film. So, a few weeks later I decided to watch in a smaller, arthouse theater.

I liked it, but also had some issues with it. The relationship between Gary and Alana felt a bit icky due to their age difference. Most of the main plot points are dropped and the story structure is a bit off.

Man, Cooper Hoffman really looks like his father at times.

16. Never Look Away (2018)

R | 189 min | Biography, Drama, Romance

68 Metascore

German artist Kurt Barnert has escaped East Germany and now lives in West Germany, but is tormented by his childhood under the Nazis and the GDR-regime.

Director: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck | Stars: Tom Schilling, Sebastian Koch, Paula Beer, Saskia Rosendahl

Votes: 25,342 | Gross: $1.30M

[Review] ------------------------------------------------------- Date Watched: Saturday, February. 19, 2022 | How I Watched: blu-ray on PlayStation 3

✮✮✮✮/✮✮✮✮✮ | ♛

Favourite scene: Art Imatates Life

Best actor: Tom Schilling

Das Leben der Anderen was my favourite first time watch of last year, so I was very interested to sit down for this one(*), but I was scared by the running time.

But I finished it and wow...

While I think the running time can be a endurance test at times and the uneven tone [especially during the the beginning when bus driver gets crushed by the rubble] does clash with the rest of the film. But this was still an excellent film.

Hopefully Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck does another film someday.

(*) = Storm Eunice made me place this film on hold for a day.

17. Dobermann (1999)

After Werk ohne Autor I was interested in seeing more of Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck's directorial career.

This is a really good short. Huge props to the director and people involved making the dog act. And the Black & White Steadicam/cinematography still holds up!

I am not a fan of dogs and/or animals in general, but this was fun!

18. Haim: Valentine (2017 Music Video)

14 min | Short, Music

Music video by HAIM performing 'Something To Tell You,' 'Nothing's Wrong' and 'Right Now'

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson | Stars: Haim, Alana Haim, Danielle Haim, Este Haim

Votes: 226

Date Watched: Saturday, February. 19, 2022 | How I Watched: youtube on tv

I wasn't familiar with the Haim Sisters before Licorice Pizza, so I wanted to check some of their music out.

Paul Thomas Anderson's directing here is excellent.

Even if I wasn't too big on their music, it is still a lot better than a lot of the modern crap of the last 25+ years.

19. Dannie O (2017)

6 min | Short, Western

No one is who he seems.

Director: Jasper Loos | Stars: Duncan Meijering, Dirk Gunther Mohr, Cathelijne Wassenaar

Date Watched: Sunday, February. 20, 2022 | How I Watched: youtube on tv

Fun to see something filmed close where I haven't been yet [Zaltbommel]. Not too big on some of the handheld camerawork, but I don't mind the Western influences here.

20. The Grandmaster (2013)

PG-13 | 130 min | Action, Biography, Drama

73 Metascore

The story of martial-arts master Ip Man, the man who trained Bruce Lee.

Director: Kar-Wai Wong | Stars: Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Ziyi Zhang, Jin Zhang, Chang Chen

Votes: 36,767 | Gross: $6.59M

[Review] ------------------------------------------------------- Date Watched: Saturday, February. 26, 2022 | How I Watched: blu-ray on PlayStation 3

[The International Cut]

✮✮✮/✮✮✮✮✮

Favourite scene: The First Fight

Best actor: Tony Chiu-Wai Leung

This is the third film I've seen directed by Wong Kar-wai and I'm still not a fan of his.

But this film has some good stunt work/choreography, excellent cinematography and decent performances.

The fight sequences feel out of place here. The rest of the film is quite serious, but the fights are almost something else.

I didn't connect with the characters, maybe because I was tired.

21. Train to Busan (2016)

Not Rated | 118 min | Action, Horror, Thriller

73 Metascore

While a zombie virus breaks out in South Korea, passengers struggle to survive on the train from Seoul to Busan.

Director: Yeon Sang-ho | Stars: Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok, Kim Su-an

Votes: 258,634 | Gross: $2.13M

[Review] ------------------------------------------------------- Date Watched: Sunday, February. 27, 2022 | How I Watched: blu-ray on blu-ray player

✮✮✮✮/✮✮✮✮✮ | ♛

Favourite scene: Blinding Lights

Best actor: Gong Yoo, but Su-an Kim is fucking amazing too!

This film was on my watchlist for forever and I finally get around to it. A friend and I watched it together and it is such a rewarding watch.

I do have some issues concerning how the infection spreads. Why does it spread so quickly in the beginning? While in later moments it spreads (quite a bit) slower to save some characters asses or make it more dramatic. I found the message of saving yourself instead of helping others an interesting one. I have struggled with this and I like the moment of duality in the third act where Seok-woo leaves Soo-an another time to save her life.

Not watching Peninsula though. I saw the trailer and it looks like garbage.

22. The Tron Phenomenon (2011 Video)

Interesting. I didn't even know Jean Giraud was involved in the production (design) of Tron. I know of his work, but I never delved into it.

[Review] ------------------------------------------------------- Date Watched: Saturday, March. 12, 2022 | How I Watched: recorded off Nederland 3 on Ziggo Mediabox

Due to some upcoming tests and exams, I barely have any energy to watch films. So when I watched this with my father I was glad to watch something, but I was less engaged with it, but still had a good laugh. Therefore I will place films and series on the backburner for a while. I just don’t want to watch something and not be focused enough to remain interested. [I wrote this review one day after my viewing].

But back to this comedy special. Roué Verveer: Heppie de peppie was surprisingly solid. I hadn’t seen one of his specials beforehand and I wasn’t sure how my father would react to the "sexual humour" in this [why did I watch Hodejegerne with him?], but thankfully he didn’t think too much of it. I know he saw him live a few years ago. I really liked Roué Verveer’s maniac energy as he tries to remain calm about the "craziest situations".

It is also really weird to see this now, knowing this aired first on Friday, December. 25, 2020. I thought this was recorded before COVID took over the world. But after looking it up, he performed the special in 2019.

26. The Making of 'Tron' (2002 Video)

88 min | Documentary, Sci-Fi

I take back what I said about The Tron Phenomenon because this making-of of Tron is fucking fantastic and informative.

I feel bad for giving Tron 3 out of 5 stars just by seeing how much effort went into it.

I'm ready to revisit Tron: Legacy after some exams at the end of March.

27. Shutdown (II) (2017)

9 min | Short, War

Another good short by Jasper Loos. But I do think it's too short for its own good. How does Elvira not know about social media? And why do Mark and Elvira look as old as each other?

And this is even more relevant now [read: war] than it was when it came out five years ago.

I knew about this film for some time now, but never was interested enough for it [I thought it would be a lot like A Clockwork Orange but I was mistaken].

This film was amazing!

Ray Winstone is excellent in the leading role [didn't even recognize him too!] and the film is gritty and uncompromising. The rape sequence is a hard scene to watch, and Davis' suicide scene is one of the hardest scenes I had watched in some time.

My favourite of the year so far [and I wouldn't mind picking up the blu-ray too!]

Ugh...

I watched this back in 2017, but didn't pay attention to it. But now I did and...

This film is really disappointing! I could've been a really good and scary thriller, but the glacial pacing, awful tonal shifts made this unbearable to sit through.

Even people like Gregory Peck, Laurence Olivier and Bruno Ganz can't save this one. And I hated seeing Steve Guttenberg here with curly hair [he's more of a comedy actor and doesn't fit here]. However I made a comment about 'Allo 'Allo! to the people I was watching this with [comment about tone], and seconds later Richard Marner appeared in a cameo!

Jerry Goldsmith also delivered one of his worst musical scores here. I got tired of the waltz music real quickly and some of it sounded like Looney Tunes [tell me this film isn't a comedy].

I'm late to the party when it comes to watching this one. Something I try often to do is to spread a director’s filmography over an unlimited time in case their films get boring.

I really liked Todo sobre mi madre, but I was disappointed by Átame! and La mala educación. So I waited a bit [even though I bought the blu-ray last year] and decided to sit down and watch it.

And after watching it I’m split on the film. It isn’t bad, but I didn’t love the story. Pedro Almodóvar’s directing is great, the acting cast all do a great job too, especially Antonio Banderas.

Alberto Iglesias also delivered another good score here. And José Luis Alcaine’s work behind the camera is another great thing to booth [how the hell did his films with Brian De Palma look so bad?], but there’s some motion blur here as well (maybe due to the blu-ray or my television?).

Just wish I cared more for the story.

This had everything going against it. I wasn’t a fan of The Lighthouse, so I wasn’t too hyped at first.

But I went to this film with two others and… This is a really good film.

Robert Eggers’ directing is spectacular. Really like the way he doesn’t cut away with the action sequences. I did expect the film to be more bloody though (it really isn’t that bloody/gory). Although I wished they use less CGI. I was fine with the CGI animals here, but the finale is overbaked with CGI.

The screenplay by Robert Eggers isn’t half bad either. I just wish he quits using seagulls, barking like a dog [but is used to better effect here though] and fart jokes. I don’t know too much about the Hamlet story, but I even knew Nicole Kidman was a traitor.

I also love the musical score by Robin Carolan and Sebastian Gainsborough. And the cinematography by Jarin Blaschke is jaw dropping. So many great shots and the usage of many different colours is great to see as well.

Or to summarize this one: It starts like The Lion King and ends like the Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.

I wouldn’t mind rewatching this one soon.

Nah, this wasn't good, at all.

I know about the upcoming remake for Crimes of the Future, but I haven't seen the trailer. This was like Stereo (Tile 3B of a CAEE Educational Mosaic), and I'm not a fan of that film either.

David Cronenberg delivered better work in Stereo (Tile 3B of a CAEE Educational Mosaic) with those amazing running sequences, which this film just abandons. The rest of the directing is the sum of its parts too. The framing is terrible and made it look like Cronenberg was half alseep during it [the building is nice though... At least the outdoor look, not the indoors look though]. I also had a good laugh when you can clearly see cars driving by in the glass panes!

Ronald Mlodzik is not charismatic enough to lead a film, and the rest of the actors aren't that much better either.

And I got a headache due to the audio soundtrack here. It is that bad.

There's no way in hell the remake is going to be worse and this film is worthy for a good remake.

My least favourite film of the year so far.

This was on my to-watch-list for a different reason than you might think. When making this year's ACTIONx52 last November, I stumbled upon this film. I had never heard of it and it looked cheap but I wanted to give it a shot anyway.

Then I waited with watching the film, but after some research I found out that the director of this film is from Belgium. So, as research I created a Vimeo account to watch Plan B, a short by the same director to see what his work looks like. Despite the low quality of the short (360p) I liked his style, even though his camera work is too frantic for my liking.

And after watching this one I am left cold on it. It has a slow burn, but the screenwriting in second and third act ruin this film for me personally. Why is Brooks the masked camouflaged killer? Why in the hell does Gustafson shoot Rayburn? How is Rayburn's cabinet not a crime scene? Why are there two killers here (Brooks and Dr. Boone)? Why doesn't anyone lock the door when they're told to and Brooks enters? I had a big problem with the screenplay.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is fine here, but the rest of the cast doesn't reach his level, but Charlotte Lindsay Marron as Molly came close to delivering the best performance here, even without one line of dialogue.

The director Robin Pront did a so-so job here. I really like some of aerial and the stilted shots, but like Plan B this has too much shaky cam, and the action sequences have shaky cam too! I thought we moved passed that annoying trend!

The cinematography by Manuel Dacosse isn't that good either. While I don't mind some of the shots, like the neon baked nightclub/stripclub, or the look of the film, it often looks too clean due to colouring filtering, or too much blur. There's one sequence in the wildlife sanctuary where they're blurring in and out of the trees, which is really distracting!

For the last few movies I watched I didn't have too much energy left, yet somehow I got a lot out of this one, which makes this watch so weird.

I waited with this film for two different reasons: The first being when it came out I was in the middle of learning for my exams and my week of vacation in Domburg, and the second reason being that it was shown in Fraterhuis Zwolle, and I wanted to watch it on a bigger screen [no offense to Fraterhuis though].

So I waited and it payed off because I was able to watch it on the bigger screen!

Man, this film was an experience!

This was my first Joachim Trier film and I didn't know what to expect from it. I even tried to avoid trailers and other material, which wasn't always successful, but I'll get to that later.

Joachim Trier's directing is great, and so is the cinematography. What I don't like about some (not all) arthouse films is the absence of music (speaking of a original soundtrack), but this has a excellent soundtrack (songs and an OST too) and I wish they release the original soundtrack soon, because I liked it!

I wasn't expecting some moments, like the "frozen in time" sequence, or the drug filled sequence where she envisions herself completely naked, older and with a kid at her breast, she feels vulnerable of all her former lovers and even the LYNX figure who eats her child in a hot dog, then she sees her father sitting on a couch and she sits in front of him angrily throwing her bloodied tampon. I just love how the LYNX figure was included in that sequence!

But I didn't always care for Julie and her story as a whole. There are also plot points that are quite cringe-worthy, like the dialogue about mansplaining/womansplaining or Julie writing a sexual piece in the ''#MeToo era''. Those moments really made me cringe, and I wish they would step away from that in media. I did however like some of the social commentary though, like how the LYNX figure is adapted for film how he is made child-friendly and all the ''sexual'' things are stripped of him (I won't go into what because IMDb will probably strike me). I also like how Aksel has to defend his creation because he gets attacked by some feminists for his depiction of women in his comics [Aksel was in the right too]. But they didn't go far enough with that, and how is Julie's sexual piece any better then his creations?

Also, I got a good laugh out of the humour in this, espcially how Sunniva finds out about her roots and how she becomes one with that.

I did mention how one sequence was spoiled to me and that was the Criterion cover. I had this cover in mind when watching it, but didn't know I took the cover too literally, and didn't know that it was about the drug-filled sequence.

I wouldn't mind seeing more of Trier's work.

The acting is great, especially by Michael Caine, who showed his acting skills early on.

The hour or so felt a bit slow, and it feels realistic, but it feels like a chore at points. But then the action sequences made up for the slow burn. This was before the "New Hollywood" era, so this film features minimal blood and gore, which made it hard to follow where when a character is killed [to see where he has been hit].

I'm glad I finally saw it though.

This film was on my watchlist for an eternity now. I had heard about its infamous ending [not knowing what was happening in it though] and I was curious for it.

And after watching it (finally) I can say I really enjoyed this one!

I really enjoyed the road trip aspect of it and the music is awesome, especially when Jimi Hendrix's If Six Was Nine plays during one sequence. I can't think of another movie before this one that had needle drops of this kind!

The reasons that this film isn't a 5/5 star flick are a couple of issues I have with it. First off, I wasn't a fan of the editing here. It is too chaotic, especially during some transitions and the editing during the graveyard sequence is very chaotic and not easy to follow.

And secondly, I wasn't a fan of the ending. I can't talk about the ending without talking about the third act and my problems with it. Jack Nicholson gets killed, but it isn't obvious who was behind this, or the reason behind this. The graveyard sequence was another one of the weird sequences. I don't have a single clue what happened during that sequence. And the final sequence is weak. Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper get killed by some random arsehole in a car with his shotgun, but this wasn't earned. I thought I was going to end with Wyatt and Billy's deal, which they mention before the final sequence.

Despite the wonky editing and the weak ending this film was really good.

I knew about this film for years and I was never all that interested [because it didn't look interesting enough]. Back in November (of last year) I was ready to sit down and watch this, but then Dean Stockwell passed away and if I hated the film, I would feel bad shit-talking about a film.

But after watching Der Himmel über Berlin in February (this year) this became a high priority on my watchlist.

Maybe I had my expectations too high, but I was disappointed by this film.

I had in mind to watch this film in the morning (April 29), but I had a headache, and the day after (April 30) I had everything working against me to sit down and watch it in the morning.

So when I didn't feel like doing some homework in the afternoon (April 30) I figured to sit down and watch it.

The directing is superb, and so is the cinematography and the musical score.

At first I didn't know what to think of Harry Dean Stanton's acting (more of a screenplay thing-y), but he is fantastic here. I was expecting more of Nastassja Kinski, but her scenes are iconic [when she wears that pink angora sweater], but I felt Bernhard Wicki and Aurore Clément were severly miscast [due to their accents and them flubbing their lines frequently].

I found the screenplay one of the weakest things about this film. I don't buy Travis Henderson wandering around for four straight years, and how he doesn't remember his family. Walt Henderson and Anne Henderson's storylines are dropped halfway through, and I wanted to see what happened to them.

I am glad I watched the film, but I didn't love it like almost everyone else [I got more out of Der Himmel über Berlin personally.]

This basically boils down to Tomb Raider + Indiana Jones + Romancing the Stone - Everything good about that film + Gen Z humour/talking points.

Yeah... This is my least favourite film of the year (that I rated and I've seen so far). The directing is directionless, the screenplay lacks danger and is too cringy [I'm tired of films using Gen Z talking points (mansplaining, sapiosexual, binary, etc.)].

Brad Pitt delivered my favourite performance, but of course he is the most useful and resourceful character, and gets killed off, and Channing Tatum survives it while being a pussy here.

The most hilarious part of watching this in cinema were the cinema-goers. One teen girl sitting in front of me was taking her phone out while Channing Tatum was shirtless(*) and taking pictures/filming it [the film knows its audience!]. I like Sandra Bullock, but I found her pretty weak here, maybe because the script!?

The rest of the cast (Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Daniel Radcliffe, Patti Harrison, etc.) weren't that much better either.

I hope films stop using Marvel humour. In this there are a lot of jokes in serious scenes, and the film can't take itself serious! Also the (over)usage of CGI is becoming a plague, even in films I like (Werk ohne Autor, Train to Busan, The Northman) .

Just watch Romancing the Stone if you haven't. I'll get much more out of that!

Beautiful.

That's how I would describe this film in one word.

Andrew Dominik's directing is pretty great, and the cinematography by Robbie Ryan is amazing too [although I wasn't too big on the seizure inducing lighting show two times here and the weird aspect ratio switches towards the end].

To get in the mood for this one I listened to Ghosteen and Carnage [not every song from this album though] to get a grasp of Nick Cave and Warren Ellis' modern works.

And the most surreal part of watching this was that one of my teachers had also booked tickets for it and he sat in the same row as I did.

Yes, I know I rewatched TRON: Legacy some months ago, now I am finally getting to the extras. The reason why I didn't watch them on time was because I am still pissed how they did my boys Tron and Clu dirty.

But I finally sat down to watch it [and because I have to return the blu-ray in a few days].

This wasn't half bad. I didn't mind how they made this half part mockumentary, and half building up the events of TRON: Legacy.

The directing feels a little bit cheap, but it still had some flair and style. And you can't go wrong with them using the Daft Punk musical score.

While I like this one too, I think the different parts of the documentary should've been combined [they always did the director's dirty who put in the hard work around this time] like The Making of 'Tron'.

I am surprised that the "jumping" of the crane stunt was done practically, with some green screen work [in the film it looks too CGI-ish].

I knew of Don Hertzfeldt's reputation, but I hadn't seen any of his work yet.

Man, this was trippy! I laughed way harder than I thought I would. Don Hertzfeldt's directing is excellent. I really like the joke too where the characters are drawn badly because Hertzfeldt only drew with his left hand [I'm left handed lol] and I liked the ending too. I like how the effect of damaged paper traps the characters.

I'll definitely watch more of Don Hertzfeldt's work!

I hope to be back at the end of June.

As for the film, it was quite good. I like how morally grey the characters are, and how the Operation revolves around using a corpse.

I do think the film goes on for too long and it does feel a bit too much like a PG-13 film at points.

Listen, I love Commando's [the miniseries], yet I had never seen this one.

At first I was worried. How are they going to cram 450 some minutes into a 1½ hour running time?

So I waited with watching it until the time was right. I have a few days free because of Ascension Day and after eating dinner late I wanted to watch something fun.

I actually really enjoyed this one.

I wasn't expecting it to take place after John shoots Cor Kramer and how he recounts the same Black-op mission to his lawyer.

Because I watched the miniseries I knew most of the events playing out. But this was okay, because it was 1½ years since I first saw it. And I watched it on a bigger television, so that was a positive in my book.

Werner Kolf is so fucking good, and he's almost always underused in other things!

I also think "The Hunt for Jackpot" sequence is still really suspenseful.

Jacob Meijer and Alexander Reumers' musical score is great as well.

I do have some issues with it, mostly due to its ending. It feels a bit too upbeat. The editing is also all over the place in the last ten minutes. Sequences just run over each other without consistency and it is really hard to follow.

[Don't watch this until you finish the miniseries because it takes place after the events from the miniseries.]

Oh...

With this I am going to kill my career, but it's my opinion and I'm not backing down from talking about it.

Sue me and burn me at the stake if you have to, but I did not like Everything Everywhere All at Once. I think it is above average.

The directing by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert is excellent though. I really enjoyed the Wong Kar-wai inspired slow-motion sequences, and the directing during the action sequences is top-notch.

I am not a fan of the screenplay. If the big thread of your film is a Black Hole Bagel [Am I Fucking Drunk?] I feel no tension. The melodrama made this film feel like it went on for five hours. And the constant tonal shifts were killing me.

The cast wasn't as problem either. Michelle Yeoh is great, and I loved seeing Ke Huy Quan, James Hong and Jamie Lee Curtis [some actors I grew up with]. I was suprised by Jenny Slate, because she annoyed me in Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, but her using her dog as an weapon was peak humour.

Something about the A24 films really annoys me, and that is their fans that burn everyone to the stake if you don't like their piece of celluloid.

Nice!

I didn't know Dan van Husen was casted because Martin Koolhoven loved him in the Spaghetti Westerns. Good to see Martijn Lakemeier at such an young age as well.

The transfer from the TV to blu-ray was a bit shoddy though. I also noticed during the Johan's Liquidation sequence used different music (which is used during the end credits in the final product).

And I wished this documentary was longer. Maybe we could hear about the screenplay, or Pino Donaggio talking about the musical score?

Favourite scene: A Confession

Best actor: Trine Dyrholm

This film was on my to watch pile ever since November 2021. I couldn't get around to it then, and I tried it again in March. And like last time, I couldn't find the time to sit down and watch it.

But after renting the film from the library for the third time in June I decided to finally watch it. And with the exams almost finally being over I decided to watch it on a day off [I don't have classes anymore and only one exam left!]

But I was scared because this film didn't have good reviews, but after watching it, I could see why people don't like it, but I thought it was quite a good film.

I found Trine Dyrholm's character and performance to be the most interesting one of the film. I wasn't too big on Ulrich Thomsen's character though. He sleeps with an younger woman [how still looks quite a bit older here], but I found those scenes to be too awkward to watch [student and teacher relationship]. Martha Sofie Wallstrøm Hansen also delivered an great performance, but I wasn't an fan of her storyline sleeping with the older guy two times here. Another problem was the amount of different characters here. It was too muddled and all over the place showing every character here.

Some of Thomas Vinterberg films don't have an musical score, but this one has one. The music by Fons Merkies is an mixed bag. It often feels a bit too try hard, but there are also moments where it works.

My least favourite film of Thomas Vinterberg so far. And this one wasn't even that bad.

Favourite scene: Make it Rain

Best actor: Bill Paxton

When creating this year's ACTIONx52 I placed this film on the list. I love Denzel Washington as an actor, but I was never really that interested. I rented the film back in December 2021, but I never really felt the urge to watch it [time wise and my interest], so I returned the blu-ray to the library.

To watch some more things for ACTIONx52 I decided to rent this one again, back in April. In the weeks that followed I still had the same issues [read: first few sentences], but after time running out for the disc again I decided to finally watch it.

The cast is a lot of fun. Denzel Washington is a lot of fun to watch here [as usual]. I am not a fan of Mark Wahlberg, but he's good here too. And it was good seeing Bill Paxton and Edward James Olmos.

The story didn't grab me too much. The film's quotable enough, but the film plays a bit too much on auto-pilot [except for "The Base" and "Make it Rain" sequences]. I might be due to my exam stress, but I found the film to go on for too long.

[I might rewatch this one when I'm not under so much exam stress.]

Yes, I know this is my first time watch of this Disney classic. The animation is solid and I like the story-line here, but Merlin broke the fourth wall a bit too much for my liking, and the American voices really didn't work for an story set in England. And I'm sure Rickie Sorensen went through puberty, as his voice keeps changing.

Wart/Arthur and Merlin went around like different animals, and it does feel like padding. When Wart/Arthur becomes King, the film just ends and it ends with a joke that "The Legend of King Arthur" will be adapted on screen too, which is a reference to adaptions like this.

Fuck...

I really felt like walking out of the theater and asking for a refund. Two people did and I actually feel that it would've been better if I did.

I mentioned in my short thoughts for the 1970 original that I couldn't imagine this being worse than the shit I saw in the original, but David Cronenberg managed to proof me wrong! [This is a bit better, because the actors, cinematography, musical score are better, but that's comparing the 1970 student film to a studio film.]

The entire film feels so directionless. Characters just keep talking their heads off, and the "exhibitions" feel like shock value, and nothing more. Cronenberg clearly shots the body horror well, but here it just feels overindulgent [The autonomy sequence of Brecken just went too far.]

I'll never rewatch this one. I like most of David Cronenberg's work as an director, but he's lost his way.

I had this one on my watchlist for a long time now. I was curious about the film, but I'm not a fan of the studio behind it [that one is A24].

I originally planned to watch this one in June for a Letterboxd Challenge, but that idea fell apart [The Kid filled that gap and at that time I was probably in my most busy weeks learning for exams and finishing an assignment].

And watching this one, I really had a good time with Good Time!

The directing by Benny Safdie and Josh Safdie [or the Safdie Brothers for short] is choatic. This is a good and a bad thing. They created an anxienty-filled experience, but I did get a headache when the third act hit. The cinematography might be to blame for that though.

Robert Pattinson is quickly becoming one of my favourite current actors. His performance as Connie Nikas is marvellous! Benny Safdie was good too, but I got a bit annoyed by his lisp. I love Jennifer Jason Leigh as an actress, but she's wasted here, which is a shame. It was good seeing Barkhad Abdi as an security guard [I knew him from films like Captain Phillips and Blade Runner 2049].

The musical score by Daniel Lopatin (under the name of Oneohtrix Point Never) is quite good, but it does feel a bit overbearing at points.

[I wasn't expecting the big plot twist when it is revealed that Connie didn't get Nick out, but another criminal named Ray. That was an excellent try at subverting expectations!]

I knew of this films's existence, but I never sought it out.

A friend bought the blu-ray and we watched it together for the first time. And I'm glad I did because this was an bloody good time!

Josh Hartnett and all the other actors are quite good. The amount of blood and gore was also nice to see [I wasn't expecting the child (turned vampire) to get killed though] and there's some weak CGI (some of the blood and gore, fire and snow), but I can give it some leeway due to the amount of practial effects.

Not bad.

Well... I watched this back in 2017, but didn't pay attention to it. But now I did and...

I read the book (The Dutch translated version) back in 2021 and I loved it. After watching an episode of 1864 I felt the need to watch this one [and one of the characters really looks like the Danish Lisbeth Salander]. This was an great film! Daniel Craig surprised me as Mikael Blomkvist [seeing him break his James Bond image a bit], and Rooney Mara is excellent as well.

Because I read the book I knew about all the events that where playing out. [My main gripe is how the relationship between Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander is developed. It went a bit too quick for my liking. And because the book is quite big (The Dutch translated version is 560 pages long) I get why events/dialogue are shortened up. My biggest issue is how the third act feels a bit too bloated. After Martin Vanger dies, the film sets up Wennerström’s fall from grace. In both the book and the film I don’t buy Lisbeth Salander changing into Irene Nesser. Something about her changing personalities feels off.]

Despite my gripes with some of the story this was really fucking good!

[Also I was shocked how good Yorick van Wageningen was here, but his performance in Oorlogswinter was already great! He should’ve had more and bigger roles].

I was quite curious for this film. Previously I had seen two short films directed by Mascha Halberstad and her directing and the look of the stop motion animation looked fantastic, so I was curious for this one.

My only problem was watching this one. Because this is a film rated ages six and up (in The Netherlands) I wanted to watch this one, but I couldn’t find the right time. So I booked a ticket for a Saturday morning with only two others in the theatre.

I found this one really charming. The stop motion animation looks fantastic on the big screen and the voice acting wasn’t an issue either. My main issues with the film is the poop humour and how characters switch character a bit too quickly for my liking, which becomes a bit too noticeable near the end [which is most prevalent with Margreet’s behaviour and the reveal that K.P. Tuitjes is the (obvious) villain of the piece. The credits also play that Tuitjes is breaking the fourth wall and reveals that he’s planning to ruin the competition. It feels a bit sequel-bait-ish.]

It's not one of my favourites of the year, but it was a fun and short time at the movies.

I found it on YouTube(*), but I sat on it for a little while, but finally made time for it now.

This was solid! Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah's directing is quite good [some of it looks a lot like the framing in Patser].

There's some things I wasn't too big on, like how Karim and Nassim both change character on a dime (feels out of character) and the final question this (short) film presents a question that feels a bit too forced.

I’ll watch more of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah's filmography soon!

I had the Millennium trilogy boxset (the Swedish ones) in my collection for a little while now, but the reason I just now get to them is because of one big reason, and that is the films are shown in 25 FPS. While I've never noticed the difference between 24 and 25 FPS, I feel like I should watch the film like they're intended to be watched [which is harder than you may think.]

But after watching The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (the American one) I felt like watching the original Swedish ones as well.

It feels weird comparing the two films and the book. Weirdfully enough this film leaves out some details (the cat scenes for example), while the 2011 film adds those sequences.

I do prefer the book over both adaptions (the 2009 and the 2011 film), but I really like the ending here. [The 2011 one and the book end the same way, but because David Fincher wasn't able to film the other two (cuz it flopped) it feels a bit like a cock tease. I do really like it too how Martin Vanger saves Mikael Blomkvist's life before drugging him. That wasn't in the book - at least I don't remember it being there.]

Noomi Rapace didn't impress me here as Lisbeth Salander. I much prefer Rooney Mara's performance in the 2011 film. But I do think Noomi Rapace was a much more convincing Irene Nesser though [and the way they showed it was much better too]. And I can’t forget to mention how much Michael Nyqvist looks like Elon Musk in some shots. And it was good seeing David Dencik here too [as he appeared in the 2011 film as well.]

And I forget to mention this, but Hodejegerne used one of the shots from this (with some added VFX). I knew this already, but it really funny though to see it.

[Just an F.I.Y., I’ll be on holiday this Friday. Because of this I won’t be able to watch the rest of the original Swedish trilogy (because the two other films are three hours each and both are best watched right after each other), but I’ll try to finish 1864 soon. That (mini)series is an absolute disaster and I can’t wait for it to be fucking over.]

This wasn't half bad!

Director Luc Enting and the filming crew did an really good job directing. I really love the look of this film, but there are some shots where the camera quality is a bit off.

André van Duin did an fine job as the narrator, but I do think the script they gave him was a bit too on the nose. He overexplains situations, or makes them too comical, but he did fine regardless.

Best actor: Michael Nyqvist

Decided to continue watching the original Millennium trilogy.

I read the book in 2021-2022. Because the book is quite long (the Dutch translated version is 568 pages long), the film can't adapt everything. But I'm fine with that.

One part of me thinks the Millennium films [the ones I've seen so far] are a bit too bloated though. I think there’s too much dialogue and events are better for books [Stieg Larsson isn't the greatest writer either], the films feel lost in translation.

There's some stuff they left out, which was much better in this. I like how Lisbeth Salander's vacation is shortened up, and that Lisbeth Salander wasn't at Dag Svensson and Mia Bergman's house before the murder.

Some scenes really got to me too. Sequences like Lisbeth Salander having an nightmare of what happened at St. Stefans, or when Mikael Blomkvist finds out what Nils Bjurman did to Lisbeth Salander. Those scenes really were powerful, but there's a lot of dialogue and events that make the film lose steam for me.

And fuck me, that jump scare with Ronald Niedermann actually scared me. I know it was going to happen, but the scene made me shit bricks.

The blu-ray quality was disappointing. There's the issue with it being 25 FPS [read my short thoughts for Män som hatar kvinnor], but there's also something wrong with the picture quality. There's a lot of grain (in scenes where it shouldn't be) and some motion blur as well. It feels like I'm watching an bootleg(*)!

I'll try watch Luftslottet som sprängdes soon enough before going on vacation this Monday!

I wrote my "short thoughts" five days after watching it. My mother celebrated her birthday on Sunday and the day after that I went on a five-day long vacation.

This is the reason why I watched this over a two-day period (because of its running time).

Well...

This was my least favourite of original Millennium trilogy [I haven't read Millennium 4-6 yet] in terms of the book and the film.

Part of the reason of why I liked this one the least is because of the amount of characters the book and film follow. The book has the time to (the Dutch translated version is 651 pages long! | Which this was the longest book I’ve read so far!), but the film is quite hard to follow. At times I was getting a bit lost in who was who.

And because I'm so familiar with the book, I liked and hated some of the changes they made. I was expecting Monica Figuerola to be the love interest, which she isn't here. I'm fine with that. Another thing I'm fine with is them not showing the Gibraltar scenes from the book.

As for things I didn’t like. Well… Let’s start with the anonymous mailer. In the book it is revealed who it is, but the film never reveals its enemy, which is something I don’t like. And for the final film in the trilogy, it feels like there’s not enough of an closure. The film should’ve ended with Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander like they did in the book, and not with the cigarette smoking Lisbeth Salander. It feels like an abrupt ending. And my last point is this. Lisbeth Salander’s story arc throughout the trilogy is her not killing her enemies. In the book Salander has a flashback before leaving Ronald Niedermann, but here she doesn’t. This is a huge disappointment, especially considering her entire story arc!

And the blu-ray had the same issues here as Flickan som lekte med elden [white grain in scenes where it shouldn't be, 25 FPS and motion blur], which was disappointing!

I’ll read through and watch The Girl in the Spider's Web after I’m done reading and watching Berlin Alexanderplatz, The Name of the Rose and Elle s'appelait Sarah.

Yesterday they pulled two wisdom teeth out of my mouth on the right side. I wanted to wait with watching this with the right mindset (as I was in a lot of pain and tired too). This film is a part of my Failed Challenges Challenge and I wanted to watch at least one film per month.

But today I didn't have too many issues with my mouth, so I decided to sit down for this one.

And I'm glad I bought the blu-ray for my collection because this is a great add! Someone I worked at (old) workplace said this was her favourite film, and I’m glad I finally got around to it.

Audrey Hepburn is marvellous here! This was the first time I've seen a film starring her, but it surely won't be the last. Nice to see George Peppard [familiar with his performance in The A-Team] and Martin Balsam. I’ve heard some people complain about the Asian character [the landlord] in this, but I didn’t mind it. They play his character to be a stereotype, and I don’t mind it.

I haven't read Truman Capote's novel (nor am I familiar with his work), but if the screenwriter copied some of the dialogue from the novel, it is noticeable. The dialogue feels a bit too posh.

I absolutely love the usage of Moon River, which is used several times during the film.

Close to being 4/5 stars for me, but I wasn’t as engaged into it as I hoped.

Best actor: I love Tchéky Karyo, but I have to give it to Bart the Bear and Youk the Bear

I rented this film a while ago from my local library, but I now decided to watch it. And I'm glad I did, because I fucking loved this one. It feels like it's been such a long time since I rated a film I watched for the first time with a 4.5/5 or 5/5 stars.

Following the Bear Cub was very interesting. I do think I got a bit annoyed with the sounds she makes. It does sound like she's jizzing herself [I don't know if that's the sound mixers fault, or that she made those noises herself].

Because this revolves around real animals, I was scared they harmed animals in some way. I don't really like animals, but I hate when there's harm done to them. So, I was happy to see the end credits.

And I like the look of the film. Italy is a great location to film. And also because I didn't know about the animal safety thing-y the film was more filled with tension. The cougar scene was really tense! I really wanted the the Bear Cub to survive its enemies.

At first I wasn't sure how Tchéky Karyo's role would play out when seeing the opening credits, but I like his role and performance a lot. His change of heart feels a bit rushed, but I can forgive some of that too.

I did like the first dream/nightmare sequence, but not the second one. The first sequence uses some nice stop motion for the frogs with fangs, but the second one is something right out of David Lynch's filmography.

And the musical score was nice too, even if it is minimalistic.

Now ranked as my fourth favourite of this year.

[This is criminally underseen. I highly recommend this one!]

Then when I went to the Kamper Stripspektakel (a comic book market)(*) and they showed this one for free!

This film was made without a budget, making this a zero budget film. And I found this to be really impressive.

But the interview segment before the film took way too long and the film didn't grab me either.

The film relies on more famous films, mainly the James Bond franchise, Mission: Impossible, Pulp Fiction, La Femme Nikita and others for its story beats. There are some wacky ideas, like the toothbrush kill and a headquarters outside of Intertoys.

And why do a terroist attack on Zutphen? Why not Zwolle? Bastards.

It also was really funny that some children were in the theatre as well. There's some sensual material and CGI blood and gore. A mother covered her daughter's eyes several times.

I wasn’t sure about the CGI at first, but I think it is fine. The stop motion is great, and I get why they used CGI here (animating water with stop motion films is a nightmare). The British humour really worked for me too. I laughed quite regularly and the voice work works wonders too.

I do have some issues how The Pirate Captain basically sells his Dodo for the Queen’s booty [interpret that how you will], but they regain that plot point in the final scenes.

I also like how The Surprisingly Curvaceous Pirate is never spotted by the other pirates to be female, even if she wears pink and has more female-like thighs.

Oh, and this features the best usage of The Clash‘s London Calling in film I’ve seen so far [especially after bad/disappointing films using it like Die Another Day and Atomic Blonde, to mention just two]

Well… Where should I begin?

I rented this one back in late June. I had only seen one film directed by Kelly Reichardt and that was Old Joy. I wasn’t a fan. And because of that film I never reached out for another film of hers. And I finally watched this because I had to return it in a few days.

I wanted to see if maybe this would be a turning point for me. And after watching it I do think I might check out more stuff I wasn’t really interested in.

At first I was sure I was going to hate this one. A24 is my fucking kryptonite [safe for Good Time] and one of the first few shots is real pretentious, that being the long take of nothing happening, except for a ship passing by.

But then the film really grabbed me with its characters and time period. The relationship between Otis "Cookie" Figowitz and King-Lu is real interesting and fun to follow. King-Lu can become a bit too annoying with his constant dialogue, but that’s a minor issue still.

And as a Dutch person I can safely say, I got hungry for oliebollen (the oil cakes shown in this) again. [Damn, I have to wait until December!]

The ending confused me at first, because they didn’t show the deaths of Otis "Cookie" Figowitz and King-Lu, but I don’t mind the way they showed it, but more the way it built up to that.

A low 4 stars from me.

Note | Sunday, August. 28, 2022: This week was pretty bad for watching stuff. There were three reasons: First off, the weather was killing me. The record of warmth in The Netherlands this week was insane, beating the record from 1901. Secondly, I had several personal issues I had to deal with. And third being the library. This month was a terrible month with blu-rays. The Graduate, Biutiful, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Honour of the Dragon all didn't work and/or fucked around. This makes watching films a nightmare. I want to watch films for the Letterboxd Challenges, but this makes everything 10x harder.

I became somewhat interested in this short film after seeing the poster. The posters of Alex van Warmerdam’s filmography look fantastic and this one is no different.

Finding this one was more difficult. Nowhere to be found on YouTube and/or some other sources, but then I found out that this was an extra on the DVD of Ober(*), so I rented the Alex van Warmerdam DVD collection from my library just to watch it.

Alex van Warmerdam is a director I haven’t really been a fan of. Granted, I’ve only seen Borgman and Grimm (I’ve only seen the re-edit supervised by him), and both films didn’t really wow me. I know he has an audience, but I wish I was one of them.

And this short film didn’t change my mind. While I don’t mind the idea of the secret here being that the white hills with car tires hide food supplies. I don’t mind the idea of it, but that’s the only thing I got out of this.

The black and white cinematography looks fine and Alex van Warmerdam did an okay job as the lead.

Best actor: Michael Wincott

I got curious for this one ever since the first trailer dropped. It didn’t reveal too much and the idea behind Jordan Peele doing a take on alien horror intrigued me.

However Jordan Peele’s filmography is a mixed bag for me. I loved Get Out [even if it is a bit racist towards white people, thinking back on it], Us was disappointing as hell and this film sadly is disappointing as well.

The humour didn’t work for me. And a large part of this is that mixed with the horror aspects of it. Furthermore, the characters annoyed the piss out of me. Daniel Kaluuya looks like he’s barely there mentally and Keke Palmer’s Emerald Haywood is so fucking unbearable. It was fun to see Michael Wincott in something again [I found out this was his first role in five years!] and Keith David of course. Keith David is severely underused here, and the opening title sequence credits him, but he's already a goner by then! It's a shame that the cast is wasted here, because they have great actors!

I don’t mind some of the humour though. The Ancient Aliens bit was funny and some other lines made me crack up, but the humour makes this more bloated than it already is. And for 130 minutes this is a long sit.

I don’t like Gordy’s Massacre here. This subplot is such a large part of the opening and the second act, but it’s dropped like its nothing. Is it to show the effects of animal cruelty, or is it a race allegory [knowing Jordan Peele, this wouldn’t even be much of a stretch]. Those scenes really feel like shock factor scenes and not much else.

The idea behind the U.F.O./U.F.A. being a sort of living creature is a real interesting idea. I hadn’t really seen this before and I like the idea behind it. The sound design [especially with Dolby Surround Sound] really sold the terror when we first see the humans being abducted and fed to the U.F.O./U.F.A. I don’t really get how Daniel Kaluuya’s OJ Haywood [really Peele!?!] got the idea of not looking the U.F.O./U.F.A. in the eye, because the reason the film gives is bollocks!

Michael Abels’s musical score is a mixed bag [as he tries to make the music too whimsical], but the cinematography by Hoyte Van Hoytema is superb though. He’s becoming one of my favourite modern cinematographers.

And last I forget, the editing is some of the worst I’ve seen in quite a while. I have a issue with a lot of European films using the some type of editing. I named this "European Editing", and this film uses it too. I loathed this decision because it is more distracting than good.
