Disney+ is gearing up for a fresh adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera, this time with a modern twist aimed at young adults. According to scooper Mttsh, Rachel Zegler, known for her roles in West Side Story and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is reportedly being considered for the role of Christine, the young soprano who becomes the obsession of the mysterious Opera Ghost.
However, it’s unclear if she’s already in talks or just on the studio’s radar.
This upcoming version, simply titled Phantom, will be directed by Kenny Ortega, the mind behind High School Musical and The Descendants. Ortega’s adaptation will stick to the classic storyline: Erik, a disfigured musical genius living under the Paris Opera House, falls for Christine and manipulates her rise to stardom.

Yet another adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera is in development for Disney+, and the project may now be honing in on its female lead.
According to scooper Mttsh, Rachel Zegler is being eyed to play Christine, the object of the titular Opera Ghost's obsession. Whether this means she's actually in talks for the role or simply someone the studio is interested in is not clear.
Titled Phantom, this YA take on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux will be directed and executive produced by Kenny Ortega, who has led two major Disney franchises with High School Musical and The Descendants.
It doesn't sound like Ortega's version will be changing up the basic premise, with the story focusing on Erik, "a mysterious, disfigured musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. He becomes obsessed with a young soprano, Christine, and manipulates events to make her the star of the opera.

The A Nightmare On Elm Street franchise has seen various characters come and go, among them Kristen Parker, played by Patricia Arquette, and she’s right about one specific thing about her. Back in 1984, Wes Craven terrorized the audience with a one-of-a-kind slasher villain in A Nightmare On Elm Street. The movie introduces Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), a child killer burned alive by the parents of his victims. However, that isn’t enough to stop him, and he returns to terrorize the children of his murderers where their parents won’t ever be able to defend them: their dreams.
However, if Krueger kills them in their dreams, they die too. One of his targets, Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), goes to lengths to defeat him, but it’s not enough. The success of A Nightmare On Elm Street made way for a franchise with a total of nine movies (including a...

A popular trend in the movie world in recent years is major studios remaking their fan-favorite films from decades before. Although the idea has been popularized by Disney with their live-action remakes of their classic animated features, the trend extends far beyond the one company. Throughout Hollywood, filmmakers are aiming to capitalize on the pre-existing fan bases of their original movies. Oftentimes, putting a modern spin on a beloved classic seems like a surefire way to make a hefty profit.
However, a handful of attempts have proven that success is not a guarantee. Many recent remakes, particularly of films from the 1980s, have ended up massively underwhelming their audiences. Viewers flock to theaters hoping to see an exciting new twist on their favorite stories, but sadly discover that they are merely being given something boring, unoriginal, or otherwise disappointing. Although the films that inspired them may have been quite successful,...

Ever look at that vest-wearing, blaster-firing renegade Han Solo and wonder if he likes tossed salad and scrambled eggs with his blue milk? Well, there was a time when he might have, given that before Harrison Ford became captain of the Millennium Falcon, Frasier Crane himself, aka Kelsey Grammer, had a crack at the role.
Speaking to Conan O'Brien about his brush with the galaxy far, far away in 2018, Grammer recalled how he nearly ended up starring in "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope." After being thrown out of Juilliard in the mid-1970s, he was put in touch with an agent who advised him "there's a guy two blocks up the street but he's looking for young men for this movie about outer space. His name is Lucas. Go see him."

Remakes are pretty common in the horror genre, but not necessarily popular and not always good. Studios that own classic intellectual properties like "A Nightmare on Elm Street" or "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" obviously want to monetize them, but longtime fans have a hard time getting past anyone besides Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger or Gunnar Hansen as Leatherface. It's a problem at least as old as Universal's classics -- Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff were not the only actors to play Dracula and Frankenstein's monster, respectively, but they are the names and faces that everyone remembers and loves from the Universal Monsters movies.
So why remake the hits? Why not remake flops instead? Sure, some of those flops may have intense fan bases, but imagine how many more people would love them if the concept were done better the second time around? A clever notion that...

Once upon a time, the most popular monsters of filmdom were linked to certain actors. Though other individuals would play these roles over time, ask any movie buff to name the performers best known for portraying Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy and the Wolf Man, and they'll fire back with, respectively, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Karloff again, and Lon Chaney Jr. But while these roles were spoken for in the public's consciousness, one of these actors was famous, at least among seriously committed horror fans, for having played all four of Universal's marquee monsters -- and that actor was Chaney Jr.

It is limiting horror movies to only carrying a social or thematic message. Sometimes these films can simply exist as visceral showcases. Horror movies can showcase human craftsmanship in practical effects, gore, special effects, etc., eliciting immediate reactions from the audience that have also become one of the genre’s trademarks.
To that end, “Abruptio” by Evan Marlowe is a marvelous work of craftsmanship. The entire film is done via puppetry, with a mix of live puppetry and life-size puppet work. There might also have been actors wearing puppet masks to maintain continuity in a film doubling down on its discontinuous sensibilities.

If there's one thing a slasher movie franchise needs, it's an instantly recognizable slasher. "Halloween" has Michael Myers, "A Nightmare on Elm Street" has Freddy Krueger (inseparable from actor Robert Englund), "Friday the 13th" has Jason Voorhees, and "Scream" has Ghostface. Unlike the other slashers, though, Ghostface is a mantle, not a single person.
The original "Scream" was a murder mystery, with Ghostface unmasked and killed at the film's end. Each sequel has continued the trend: a new person slips on the ghoulish white mask, full body black cloak, and starts stabbing people in Sidney Prescott's (Neve Campbell) orbit. While each Ghostface killer has naturally been played by a different actor, the disguised voice is the same in every movie, provided by voice actor Roger L. Jackson. Get a look at the voice behind the mask courtesy of this video from Jamie Kennedy (who played Randy Meeks in "Scream").

Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey horror crossover Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble is bringing together characters like Pooh, Bambi, Pinocchio, and Peter Pan from the Twisted Childhood Universe. The movie is set to begin filming in March.
While details about the story are still a secret, the slasher film will show the monsters teaming up to face survivors from previous movies.
The franchise’s first installment, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, was met with a negative critical reception and a more mixed fan reception, though it turned a profit at the box office.
The movie’s quality was called into question, with criticisms directed at the script, acting, cinematography, and lack of humor; it also received five Golden Raspberry Awards. In response to this, Frake-Waterfield stated that he is determined to raise the standard with the future films in the franchise.

Supernatural has a slew of characters that fans have a lot of fun seeing on screen, having their character arcs played out to satisfaction by the show’s brilliant writing. While Sam, Dean, and Castiel are important parts of the show, being almost synonymous with it, there is one other character that fans believe the show could not have survived without.

Recently it was announced that Mike Flanagan would be adapting Carrie for television. And I’m sure most of us are aware of the development hell that Crystal Lake (the Friday the 13th series) has been through, losing its showrunner amidst rumors of mismanagement. And we were very sad to see the Chucky series get canceled after three seasons. But it’s hard out there in the land of television and horror franchises haven’t exactly fared well there. Several years ago, Fox brought us The Exorcist TV series which had an incredible first season, fell off in the second, and was abruptly canceled.
The concept of a girl being possessed by a demon and saved by priests seems like a story that could theoretically work on television. But I’m going to go out on a limb and say that slashers do not tend to make for good television.

It's hard to overstate just how significant Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street still is. The slasher classic has successfully infiltrated our popular subconscious, reaching a sinister gloved hand into the imaginations of generations of filmmakers and reshaping modern horror cinema. It's perhaps only with hindsight that the full extent of the 1984 movie's impact can be appreciated. But even with its iconic villain, inspired premise, and archetypal story, the original A Nightmare on Elm Street is much more than an artifact to be admired. It remains a thrilling spectacle albeit with some of its originality tarnished.

The recently resurrected Anchor Bay Entertainment will release a trio of new indie horror films on Blu-ray and DVD on December 10: Crust, Cursed in Baja, and Abruptio.
Character actor Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs) makes his feature directorial debut on Crust, an offbeat horror-comedy about a sock monster that he co-wrote with Jim Wald.
Whalen stars with Daniel Roebuck (Terrifier 3), Alan Ruck (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), and Ricky Dean Logan (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare).
In Crust, “Vegas Winters is a former child star who owns a laundromat. One of the benefits of running the place is finding all the leftover socks from his customers, which Vegas uses in creative ways. After Vegas becomes the victim of bullying, he seeks refuge from the attack in the pile of socks. His pain somehow creates a monster willing to seek vengeance for Vegas.”

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"Every studio rejected it." These are the words of the late horror master Wes Craven, speaking in a 2014 oral history with Vulture regarding his 1984 cinematic classic "A Nightmare on Elm Street." It's difficult to imagine the horror genre -- if not broader pop culture -- without Freddy Krueger in it, but it was, indeed, a Herculean task getting this now-classic horror movie made. "I have the rejection letter from Universal framed on my office wall," Craven added.
What's perhaps most amazing of all is that this wasn't even Craven's first film. The man that would eventually go on to save the slasher in the '90s with "Scream" already had "Last House on the Left" and "The Hills Have Eyes" on his resume,...

Pinocchio: Unstrung First Look Spotlights Impressive Animatronic Puppet As Robert Englund Joins Cast

The original Pinocchio story is a lot darker than you might think if you've only seen the classic Disney animated movie, but the next instalment in the Twisted Childhood Universe (Aka the "Poohniverse") will take things to a whole new level.
A first official look at Pinocchio: Unstrung has been revealed via some promo stills and a behind-the-scenes video showcasing an impressive practical Pinocchio puppet, which was created by Todd Masters, the Emmy-winning VFX artist known for Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight and Child’s Play.
Helmed by Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey director Rhys Frake-Waterfield and produced by Scott Jeffrey under their Jagged Edge Productions banner, Pinocchio: Unstrung follows "young James as he learns of his grandfather Geppetto’s deadly secret: Pinocchio."
Variety reports that the project has added a true horror icon, with Freddy Krueger himself, A Nightmare on Elm Street's Robert Englund, set to star in an undisclosed role.

The Twisted Childhood Universe is set to expand with the announcement of a brand-new public domain terror from Jagged Edge Productions called Pinocchio: Unstrung. The beloved marionette who dreams of being a real boy debuted back in 1883 in Carlo Collodi's novel, but the latest interpretation of the character recasts him as a horrifying villain. The basic premise of Jagged Edge Production's Twisted Childhood Universe is rather simple, and it takes popular children's characters from the public domain and morphs them into nightmarish horror mascots that hack and slash their way through unsuspecting victims.
The project started with the surprise box-office success of 2023's Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, which was made cheap to capitalize on A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh entering the public domain. Soon, a wave of public domain horror movies were rushed into production with characters like Mickey Mouse and Peter Pan becoming dark alternates of their most kind and cuddly forms.

Though no one has been confirmed, several possible actors could replace Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street. Englund portrayed Kreuger in eight different feature film installments of the Elm Street franchise, as well as the television show, Freddy's Nightmares. Though Englund has retired from acting as Freddy, due to his age and the role demands, no other actor is yet set to replace the legend. There hasn't been an official update to the franchise in over a decade, with Englund's last appearance as Krueger being a guest role in The Goldbergs in 2018.
Unlike other slasher killers, like Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger speaks a lot, giving him quite the personality, full of iconic one-liners. Made on a budget of less than $100,000, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (watch it Here) earned more than $6 million during its global release in early 2023, so not only did the sequel Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 have a substantially higher budget, that success opened the door to an entire cinematic universe that will consist of at least one more Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel and other horror movies inspired by children’s stories, like Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Bambi: The Reckoning, and Pinocchio: Unstrung. Now, Variety reports that a pair of genre icons have just joined the cast of Pinocchio: Unstrung, as the film is set to star A Nightmare on Elm Street‘s Robert Englund and Rob Zombie regular Richard Brake! Details on Englund’s role have not been revealed, but Brake will be playing Geppetto.

The upcoming Twisted Childhood Universe (Tcu) horror movie Pinocchio: Unstrung has a practical animatronic puppet that will bring about haunting dreams. The story of Pinocchio: Unstrung features a darker take on the beloved puppet, following the story of Geppetto's grandson, James, who discovers the haunting puppet. This leads to a slasher bloodbath, with the titular character at the center of it all. The movie will directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield, who previously directed the Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood & Honey movies that are part of the same horror universe.
Now, poohbandh, the official Twitter/X account of the Tcu, has posted a video showing off the practical animatronic puppet being used for Pinocchio in Pinocchio: Unstrung. The realistic-looking puppet can be seen moving its mouth and head around in an uncanny fashion. Another angle reveals its human-like eyes, which stare piercingly out from the wood-like head. Freddy Krueger has joined the cast of the next IP-smashing slasher from the makers of microbudget hit “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.”
Well, almost. Robert Englund, who famously played the murderous horror icon across the “Nightmare on Elm Street” films, will star in “Pinocchio: Unstrung,” the latest standalone feature to join the so-called low-budget Twisted Childhood Universe. Richard Brake, a regular collaborator with Rob Zombie and whose horror credits also include the likes of “Barbarian” and “Mandy,” has also joined the film in the key role of Geppetto.
Meanwhile, Variety is able to reveal a first-look of the actual — and fully practical — Pinocchio doll, created by Todd Masters, the Emmy-winning special effects artist known for “Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight” and “Child’s Play” (he also worked on “Dune: Part Two”).

Robert Englund is a horror movie icon, and not just for his most obvious role. Getting his start in horror movies of the late 70s and early 80s, it wasn't until the American actor was cast as Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street movies that he became a household name, bringing to life the scarred, pun-slinging dream demon with ghoulish charisma. However, Freddy Krueger isn't Robert Englund's only horror movie film to fame, showing up in a wide variety of other roles in similarly scary movies.
Because of how iconic Freddy Krueger is as a slasher movie villain, it's easy to see why Englund quickly became typecast as the villain of the horror movies he does appear in, if not a creepy side character at the very least. That being said, Englund will also occasionally appear as a supporting character or even a protagonist, his appearance being more of a cameo.

Thanks to Wes Craven's eerie ability to scare generations, A Nightmare on Elm Street has had a tremendous cultural impact. Obviously, the biggest part of that is Robert Englund's infamous Freddy Kreuger character, but his films likely would have achieved the success they had without compelling characters to serve as his targets. Among them is Nancy Thompson, one of the teenagers he relentlessly pursued in the first movie.
The A Nightmare On Elm Street movies follows kids on Elm Street who have nightmares about a serial killer who murders them when they sleep. The franchise also stars Heather Lagenkamp as Nancy Thompson, one of the main protagonists and an integral symbol of the movies. Langenkamp generated popularity for the character because of her impeccable performance, and she is still remembered following her unfortunate ending in A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. This year, Wes Craven’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” Wes Craven’s immortal horror classic, turns 40.
The film, inspired by true events (watch the documentary “The Nightmare” for more), follows a group of kids who die after encountering a spooky boogeyman named Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund). Freddy is the classic god of mischief – a shapeshifting serial killer with the power to scare teenagers to death. Heather Langenkamp plays Nancy Thompson, one of the terrorized teens who discovers her own familial connection to Krueger.
“A Nightmare on Elm Street” would spawn an enviable franchise, including sequels (Langenkamp would return for “Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors” and “New Nightmare”), a television series, a 1-900 number where you could chat with Freddy (seriously), oodles of merchandise, a spin-off (2003’s “Freddy vs. Jason”) and a remake (among other things). Most recently, “A Nightmare on Elm Street” got re-released in a new,...

Johnny Depp makes his film debut in Wes Craven’s imperfect but entertaining horror that still has considerable black-comic energy
With his hat, claw glove and dodgy knitwear, Freddy Krueger gifted the world’s children an easy costume for Halloween and – given the novelisations – for World Book Day. Now Wes Craven’s original movie from 1984 is rereleased for its 40th anniversary; it is an ingenious and jauntily outrageous shocker which upends the idea of being kept awake by fear.
Robert Englund plays the unspeakable Krueger, who once upon a time killed 20 children but apparently walked free owing to an incorrectly signed search warrant. “The lawyers got fat and the judge got famous,” says one character, and, well, it certainly does sound like the victims’ parents are entitled to be miffed. (Perhaps Mr Krueger’s resourceful lawyer deserves a more prominent position in the Anoes franchise.)...

After being delayed several months by the writers strike and the actors strike, season 5 of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things (which is also the last season of the show) finally went into production at the start of the year and is now deep into its twelve month shooting schedule… and during an appearance at the Happy Sad Confused podcast’s 10th anniversary celebration, cast member David Harbour said the series finale will be worth the wait, because it’s the best episode they’ve ever done.
Stranger Things has the following synopsis: A love letter to the ‘80s classic genre films that captivated a generation, Stranger Things is a thrilling drama set in the seemingly normal Midwestern town of Hawkins, Indiana. After a boy vanishes into thin air, his close-knit group of friends and family search for answers and are pulled into a high-stakes and deadly series of events.

Now that Agatha All Along revealed Billy Maximoff's return, the lingering question is: where is Tommy Maximoff? The twin sons of Vision and the Scarlet Witch were first introduced in WandaVision as constructs within Wanda Maximoff's false reality. Unfortunately, Wanda had to sacrifice the boys to undo the havoc she wreaked upon the citizens of Westview. She then attempted to reunite with Billy and Tommy through multiversal means using dark magic, committing multiple heinous acts in the process. The Scarlet Witch then recognized the error of her ways and sacrificed herself to destroy the Darkhold.

Since then, Agatha All Along reintroduced Billy into the MCU. What's more, the series also gave Billy's motive: to find Tommy.
