I’m still reeling from A Nightmare on Elm Street turning 40 last year, but Gutter Garbs is already kicking off a 40th anniversary celebration for A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge.

The man of your dreams is back with a fiery design by Sam Coyne on T-shirts for $32, Comfort Colors tees for $34, long sleeves for $40, zip-up hoodies for $55, and 12×18 posters for $30.

Disney+ is gearing up for a fresh adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera, this time with a modern twist aimed at young adults. According to scooper Mttsh, Rachel Zegler, known for her roles in West Side Story and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is reportedly being considered for the role of Christine, the young soprano who becomes the obsession of the mysterious Opera Ghost.

However, it’s unclear if she’s already in talks or just on the studio’s radar.

This upcoming version, simply titled Phantom, will be directed by Kenny Ortega, the mind behind High School Musical and The Descendants. Ortega’s adaptation will stick to the classic storyline: Erik, a disfigured musical genius living under the Paris Opera House, falls for Christine and manipulates her rise to stardom.

Yet another adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera is in development for Disney+, and the project may now be honing in on its female lead.

According to scooper Mttsh, Rachel Zegler is being eyed to play Christine, the object of the titular Opera Ghost's obsession. Whether this means she's actually in talks for the role or simply someone the studio is interested in is not clear.

Titled Phantom, this YA take on the classic novel by Gaston Leroux will be directed and executive produced by Kenny Ortega, who has led two major Disney franchises with High School Musical and The Descendants.

It doesn't sound like Ortega's version will be changing up the basic premise, with the story focusing on Erik, "a mysterious, disfigured musical genius who lives beneath the Paris Opera House. He becomes obsessed with a young soprano, Christine, and manipulates events to make her the star of the opera.

Remakes are pretty common in the horror genre, but not necessarily popular and not always good. Horror movies can showcase human craftsmanship in practical effects, gore, special effects, etc., eliciting immediate reactions from the audience that have also become one of the genre’s trademarks.

If there's one thing a slasher movie franchise needs, it's an instantly recognizable slasher. "Halloween" has Michael Myers, "A Nightmare on Elm Street" has Freddy Krueger (inseparable from actor Robert Englund), "Friday the 13th" has Jason Voorhees, and "Scream" has Ghostface. Unlike the other slashers, though, Ghostface is a mantle, not a single person.

The original "Scream" was a murder mystery, with Ghostface unmasked and killed at the film's end. Each sequel has continued the trend: a new person slips on the ghoulish white mask, full body black cloak, and starts stabbing people in Sidney Prescott's (Neve Campbell) orbit. Recently it was announced that Mike Flanagan would be adapting Carrie for television. And I’m sure most of us are aware of the development hell that Crystal Lake (the Friday the 13th series) has been through, losing its showrunner amidst rumors of mismanagement. And we were very sad to see the Chucky series get canceled after three seasons. But it’s hard out there in the land of television and horror franchises haven’t exactly fared well there. Several years ago, Fox brought us The Exorcist TV series which had an incredible first season, fell off in the second, and was abruptly canceled.

The concept of a girl being possessed by a demon and saved by priests seems like a story that could theoretically work on television. But I’m going to go out on a limb and say that slashers do not tend to make for good television.

It's hard to overstate just how significant Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street still is. The slasher classic has successfully infiltrated our popular subconscious, reaching a sinister gloved hand into the imaginations of generations of filmmakers and reshaping modern horror cinema. It's perhaps only with hindsight that the full extent of the 1984 movie's impact can be appreciated. But even with its iconic villain, inspired premise, and archetypal story, the original A Nightmare on Elm Street is much more than an artifact to be admired. It remains a thrilling spectacle albeit with some of its originality tarnished.

The recently resurrected Anchor Bay Entertainment will release a trio of new indie horror films on Blu-ray and DVD on December 10: Crust, Cursed in Baja, and Abruptio.

Character actor Sean Whalen (The People Under the Stairs) makes his feature directorial debut on Crust, an offbeat horror-comedy about a sock monster that he co-wrote with Jim Wald.

Whalen stars with Daniel Roebuck (Terrifier 3), Alan Ruck (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), and Ricky Dean Logan (Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare).

In Crust, “Vegas Winters is a former child star who owns a laundromat. One of the benefits of running the place is finding all the leftover socks from his customers, which Vegas uses in creative ways. Screamboat has added two new cast members. Screamboat is an upcoming horror film that gives a sinister take on the classic Disney character Steamboat Willie. The film was announced shortly after the Steamboat Willie version of Mickey Mouse was entered into the public domain at the beginning of this year. It is one of two Steamboat Willie movies that have been announced. Screamboat is directed by Steven Lamorte, who also serves as a producer on the feature.

Per Variety, two new cast members for Screamboat have now been revealed. Tyler Posey and Kailey Hyman have officially joined the cast. While the specifics of their characters have not been announced, the production said that both actors will play key characters in Screamboat. A first official look at Pinocchio: Unstrung has been revealed via some promo stills and a behind-the-scenes video showcasing an impressive practical Pinocchio puppet, which was created by Todd Masters, the Emmy-winning VFX artist known for Tales From the Crypt: Demon Knight and Child’s Play.

Helmed by Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey director Rhys Frake-Waterfield and produced by Scott Jeffrey under their Jagged Edge Productions banner, Pinocchio: Unstrung follows "young James as he learns of his grandfather Geppetto’s deadly secret: Pinocchio."

Variety reports that the project has added a true horror icon, with Freddy Krueger himself, A Nightmare on Elm Street's Robert Englund, set to star in an undisclosed role.

The Twisted Childhood Universe is set to expand with the announcement of a brand-new public domain terror from Jagged Edge Productions called Pinocchio: Unstrung. The beloved marionette who dreams of being a real boy debuted back in 1883 in Carlo Collodi's novel, but the latest interpretation of the character recasts him as a horrifying villain. The basic premise of Jagged Edge Production's Twisted Childhood Universe is rather simple, and it takes popular children's characters from the public domain and morphs them into nightmarish horror mascots that hack and slash their way through unsuspecting victims.

The project started with the surprise box-office success of 2023's Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, which was made cheap to capitalize on A.A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh entering the public domain. Soon, a wave of public domain horror movies were rushed into production with characters like Mickey Mouse and Peter Pan becoming dark alternates of their most kind and cuddly forms.

Though no one has been confirmed, several possible actors could replace Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street. Englund portrayed Kreuger in eight different feature film installments of the Elm Street franchise, as well as the television show, Freddy's Nightmares. Though Englund has retired from acting as Freddy, due to his age and the role demands, no other actor is yet set to replace the legend. There hasn't been an official update to the franchise in over a decade, with Englund's last appearance as Krueger being a guest role in The Goldbergs in 2018.

Made on a budget of less than $100,000, director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (watch it Here) earned more than $6 million during its global release in early 2023, so not only did the sequel Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 have a substantially higher budget, that success opened the door to an entire cinematic universe that will consist of at least one more Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel and other horror movies inspired by children’s stories, like Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, Bambi: The Reckoning, and Pinocchio: Unstrung. Now, Variety reports that a pair of genre icons have just joined the cast of Pinocchio: Unstrung, as the film is set to star A Nightmare on Elm Street‘s Robert Englund and Rob Zombie regular Richard Brake! Variety has shared a first look image from the next movie in the twisted public domain horror universe this morning, while also revealing that Robert Englund has joined the cast.

The horror legend is reportedly playing the role of iconic character Cricket!

Additionally, Richard Brake (3 from Hell) will be starring as puppet master Geppetto.

Rhys Frake-Waterfield is directing the upcoming Pinocchio horror movie for Jagged Edge Productions, with makeup FX legend Todd Masters (Child’s Play, Underworld Awakening, Slither) tasked with creating the film’s sinister Pinocchio doll. Robert Englund has joined the cast of a new Pinocchio based horror movie. Now 77 years old, Englund's claim to horror fame came 40 years ago, when he made his debut as Freddy Krueger in 1984's A Nightmare on Elm Street. The actor has gone on to play the killer in multiple Nightmare on Elm Street sequels, playing the part most recently in an episode of the TV series The Goldbergs. Freddy Krueger as a character has also become an iconic Halloween image that has been the subject of many a costume over the years.

As per Variety, Englund is has now been announced to star in a new Pinocchio slasher movie.

Freddy Krueger has joined the cast of the next IP-smashing slasher from the makers of microbudget hit “Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.”

Well, almost. Robert Englund, who famously played the murderous horror icon across the “Nightmare on Elm Street” films, will star in “Pinocchio: Unstrung,” the latest standalone feature to join the so-called low-budget Twisted Childhood Universe. Richard Brake, a regular collaborator with Rob Zombie and whose horror credits also include the likes of “Barbarian” and “Mandy,” has also joined the film in the key role of Geppetto.

Robert Englund is a horror movie icon, and not just for his most obvious role. Getting his start in horror movies of the late 70s and early 80s, it wasn't until the American actor was cast as Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street movies that he became a household name, bringing to life the scarred, pun-slinging dream demon with ghoulish charisma. However, Freddy Krueger isn't Robert Englund's only horror movie film to fame, showing up in a wide variety of other roles in similarly scary movies.

Because of how iconic Freddy Krueger is as a slasher movie villain, it's easy to see why Englund quickly became typecast as the villain of the horror movies he does appear in, if not a creepy side character at the very least. That being said, Englund will also occasionally appear as a supporting character or even a protagonist, his appearance being more of a cameo.

Sure, there are plenty of new and classic horror movies on streaming this year. But there’s nothing that beats the sensation of sliding a disc into a Blu-ray player. It harkens back to the thrill of going to your local video store, picking out a scary movie and taking it home.

With his hat, claw glove and dodgy knitwear, Freddy Krueger gifted the world’s children an easy costume for Halloween and – given the novelisations – for World Book Day. Now Wes Craven’s original movie from 1984 is rereleased for its 40th anniversary; it is an ingenious and jauntily outrageous shocker which upends the idea of being kept awake by fear.

Robert Englund plays the unspeakable Krueger, who once upon a time killed 20 children but apparently walked free owing to an incorrectly signed search warrant. “The lawyers got fat and the judge got famous,” says one character, and, well, it certainly does sound like the victims’ parents are entitled to be miffed. (Perhaps Mr Krueger’s resourceful lawyer deserves a more prominent position in the Anoes franchise.)...

It's spooky season, and for a great many movie lovers out there, that means it's time to binge on some horror.
