Hold onto your horses, folks! Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga is riding into CinemaCon 2024 to share the latest about the Yellowstone and Dances With Wolves star’s Western epic. On Monday, we learned the first part of Horizon: An American Saga, which will debut at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19. Still, attendees moseying into CinemaCon got a new look at the sprawling drama of how settlers won the West.
During the Warner Bros. panel, Costner addressed the CinemaCon crowd, saying the movie is a bit about the promise of America. The idea was that if you were mean enough, tough enough, you could take what you wanted, but in the process, you stepped on people who had been here for 1000 years. But the film does not pass judgment, and that story, to him, was drama.

Kevin Costner is hoping a few years from now, moviegoers will have the opportunity to binge four Horizon movies in theaters.
“Maybe a year and a half, two years from now, they will come (to theaters) for 12 hours,” he told the assembled crowd of theater owners Tuesday at CinemaCon, where he teased his two-part Horizon films.
So far, only two of his planned four films have been made, he acknowledged, but he has two more scripts ready to go, should the risky film project he helped finance be successful.
“When I think about the promise of America, there was a promise out here, if you could go. If you were tough enough, if you were mean enough, if you were resourceful enough, if you were lucky enough, you could take what you wanted in America,” Costner said of the appeal of the American West. “That promise meant that we step...

“Horizon: An American Saga,” Kevin Costner’s wildly ambitious, sprawling, risky and quite possibly foolhardy two-part Western rode into CinemaCon on Tuesday.
The films, which will premiere this summer, were partially financed by Costner, who mortgaged his ranch to help raise the money for the $100 million epic. “Hopefully the people come and they keep coming and they binge your theaters,” Costner told cinema operators at Warner Bros. presentation. “There’s something in me that wanted to make this movie, and I never make one that I think won’t blow up.”
And he hinted he’s not done yet, revealing there are even more chapters on, well, the horizon. No matter how the final film ends up, Costner gets points for sheer persistence. After all, he’s been trying to get the film off the ground for decades, starting in 1988 and then trying to shoot it again in 2003 without success.

Recently, in an interview, the Avatar director said that he would think thoroughly before making movies like The Terminator. A year and a half ago, it was announced that Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner – who both have experience working in the Scream franchise, as Fitzgerald was in the Scream TV series and Gallner appeared in the 2022 Scream movie – were set to star in the “cat and mouse thriller” Strange Darling. Now we know when we’re going to have a chance to see this movie, as Variety has confirmed that veteran producer Bob Yari’s new company Magenta Light Studios has secured the U.S. distribution rights to the film and they’re planning to give it a wide theatrical release on August 23rd.
Plot details on this thriller are being kept under wraps, and Variety notes that reviews from audience members who saw the movie at Fantastic Fest last year ” hint that the film works best with as little information as possible going in.” Apparently it has something...

“Strange Darling,” the acclaimed horror film from director Jt Mollner, has landed a major U.S. distribution deal at veteran producer Bob Yari’s new company Magenta Light Studios.
Premiering at the genre event Fantastic Fest in 2023, the Miramax-produced thriller has been universally praised (it currently sits at 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with 14 reviews) for its inventive narrative structure and lead performances. Magenta Light has set an August 23 wide release.
“We are thrilled to be bringing nationwide theatrical audiences this unique and exceptional film with terrific performances by Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner. This second feature from talented writer-director Jt Mollner is destined to become a cult classic that defies conventional storytelling,” Yari told Variety.

Well, this is a semi-dangerous decision. Yes, I’m starting with The Twilight Zone 80s. Niki, haven’t we been telling you to do Og Twilight Zone… why are you doing this? A couple of reasons, the first being that this has been on repeat for me the past 6 months or longer, with Tales from the Crypt never being too far behind it. The other being that I felt like it. You’re lucky I didn’t start with Night Gallery, or maybe that’s what you wanted. So let’s talk 80s Twilight Zone, or New Twilight Zone, or Twilight Zone reboot/revival, whatever you choose to call it.
The reason to give it another go was simple. Rod Serling, my personal hero, sold the rights to Twilight Zone after the show ended its run in 1964. The studio bought the rights even though they weren’t exactly ready to start it up again.

Kevin Costner’s hugely ambitious western saga arrives this summer: here’s the new trailer, but no UK release yet.
Regular readers of this site may be already aware just how much I’m looking forward to the most ambitious Kevin Costner project in years. It’s Horizon: An American Saga, a series of four films that Costner is part-funding. Just as with his last directorial effort, the brilliant 2003 western Open Range, he’s independently funded the movie, and brought in distributors afterwards.
In the US, it’s New Line Cinema – and thus Warner Bros – that’s going to be releasing the first two films, both of which are coming out this summer. The first lands in June, the second lands in August, and both are getting US cinema releases.

Kevin Costner on Monday shared on socials a first trailer for Horizon, the two-part Western epic that played a role in his growing frustrations with his Yellowstone experience.
Before the WGA strike began last May, Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan had completed scripts for the back half of the show’s fifth season that did not include Costner, whose alleged demands had been widely reported. Per the industry-insider newsletter Puck, Costner’s reps later expressed his desire to return for Season 5B and possibly more.

Part one of “Horizon: An American Saga,” the multi-film Western epic that Kevin Costner left “Yellowstone” to make, will hit theaters on June 28, with part two to follow on August 16. Warner Bros. released a trailer for the two-part film on Monday.
The trailer promises a sprawling, colorful, violent Western film about Manifest Destiny. It’s about the settling of the titular town during the years of the Civil War, as the American frontier pushes westward and settlers come into conflict with the people indigenous to the land. “There’s no army on this Earth that are going to stop those wagons coming,” a Union Army officer played by Costner’s “Yellowstone” co-star Danny Huston warns in something like the trailer’s thesis statement.
Costner wrote the script for “Horizon” with Jon Baird, produces with Howard Kaplan and Mark Gillard, directs, and stars. It’s his first time directing a film since 2003’s “Open Range,...

Sorting through America’s history is a Herculean task. Humans built the nation with blood, sweat, and tears, watering the soil with memory, pain, and perseverance. Today, Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga trailer explores the settlement of America’s Western frontier from the Indigenous groups who blessed the land to those who occupied it by force. Horizon will be Kevin Costner‘s first time directing a movie since Open Range in 2003. He also busted out his directing chops for The Postman and Dances with Wolves, the latter of which earned him an Academy Award for Best Director.
Kevin Costner’s Horizon will “span 15 years in the settlement of America’s Western frontier, and focus on both the settlers as well as the Indigenous groups that first occupied the land.”
Here’s the official synopsis for Horizon: An American Saga courtesy of Warner Bros.:

Animation mastermind Seth MacFarlane made a name for himself with the creation of "Family Guy." After working on Hanna-Barbera cartoons like "Dexter's Laboratory" and "Johnny Bravo," MacFarlane would bring his irreverent riff on the animated family sitcom to Fox in 1999. Though the series was initially canceled after three seasons, the show's release on DVD resulted in renewed interest from both audiences and the network, and the show has been running for 22 seasons and counting. Since then, MacFarlane has created several more animated hits, including "American Dad" and the "Family Guy" spin-off "The Cleveland Show," but he's also shifted into both live-action TV and movies, which includes the raunchy buddy comedy franchise "Ted."
"Ted" follows the antics of John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg), a thirty-something who is best friends with a teddy bear that magically came to life after wishing on a magic star when John was just a boy. It might sound family friendly and whimsical,...

With only two films in James Cameron’s Avatar series since 2009, it is challenging to imagine the existence of five installments by 2031, let alone two more movies later. That’s right, folks. I said two more movies! According to James Cameron, he has ideas for Avatar 6 and Avatar 7, but there’s a twist. Instead of dedicating the remainder of his mortality to the effects-driven, money-printing franchise, he could pass the torch to another filmmaker.
Speaking with Collider about the Avatar franchise’s future, Cameron said, “We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point,” he said. “I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We’re loving it. We get to work with great people.”

A Million Ways to Die in the West was directed by Emmy Award winning Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane and written alongside his collaborators on stoner fantasy comedy Ted and Ted 2 – Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild. One-hit-wonders are an unusual thing. There are endless examples of artists that create something monumental that blasts its way into the pop culture zeitgeist and temporarily enchants and captures our attention. Then as quickly as they came, they seem to disappear. That is the idea behind 1996’s That Thing You Do! Written, directed by, and starring Tom Hanks as Mr. White- a big-time record producer who’s just discovered his next big talent- a small-town Pennsylvania rock n’ roll band with the potential to be the next big thing.

Serial-killer movies are a dime a dozen these days, with the true-crime industrial complex exploiting the ill-deeds sprees of increasingly obscure murderers to keep up with audience demand. Anyone wary of the genre might balk at the idea of “Strange Darling,” a cat-and-mouse drama about the tail end of a murder spree, but to do so would be to miss out on an exemplar of the form. Writer-director Jt Mollner flips the script on this tired genre, crafting the cleverest thriller of its kind in a while with a mighty assist from a pair of killer performances by co-leads Willa Fitzgerald and Kyle Gallner. Best experienced with as little foreknowledge as possible, “Strange Darling” demands a bit of patience, but it also rewards it.

Over the course of 100 minutes, Lost in Translation explores the relationship between two lost souls. Romantic and well-observed, with rich performances from Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray, the movie captures the longing shared by two people who don’t belong anywhere. And yet, despite the film’s many achievements, the conversation around Lost in Translation has been dominated by one question: “What did he say?”
At the end of the film, aging actor Bob Harris (Murray) hugs young grad student and newlywed Charlotte and whispers something in her ear. Writer-director Sofia Coppola puts just enough of the whisper into the mix to suggest that maybe it should be heard by a viewer who pays enough attention, but not enough to register, even with subtitles.

There’s a scene in Jt Mollner’s Strange Darling where Ed Begley Jr. makes breakfast. He chars sausages, unsheathes and melts a stick of yellow butter, then cracks a messload of eggs and leaves them to bubble while pouring out thick globs of pancake batter in a second pan. He layers the cakes with the eggs and encased pork meat and yet more butter before drowning the whole thing in whipped cream that promptly starts to liquefy. He places the mess in front of his wife (Barbara Hershey), who comically offsets the caloric mound by placing a single, wimpy red strawberry on top. This scene is almost certainly unintentionally illustrative of Moller’s approach to his sophomore feature: a twisty cat and mouse thriller so overstuffed with delicious elements that it’s constantly on the verge of becoming too much of a good thing.

The open road is a terrifying place for a young woman in the first look at “Strange Darling,” a horror-thriller from director J.T. Mollner set to premiere at this week’s Fantastic Fest.
Described as “one day in the twisted love life of a serial killer,” the project stars Willa Fitzgerald (Amazon’s “Reacher”) and Kyle Gallner. Fitzgerald, known only in the film as “The Lady,” barrels down a highway in a red Ford Pinto in a clip exclusive to Variety, escaping Gallner’s mad pursuit. After shooting out her back windshield and trying to mow her down with a pickup truck, the cat-and-mouse game moves on foot through the wilderness.
“This film was a sort of dream (or nightmare) that I was compelled to bring to life. So much about it – the colors, the music, the overall visual aesthetic, and the characters were all so clear before we even shot anything.

Hey, remember "Basic"? I'm guessing there's a good chance you don't. The 2003 thriller boasted a reunion of "Pulp Fiction" stars John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson, but that wasn't enough to entice audiences, and it flopped at the box office. But yesterday's box office flop is today's Netflix hit! And "Basic" is burning up the Netflix charts right now — it's currently in Netflix's top 10. Why does this keep happening? Why do movies that time forgot keep ending up becoming hits on Netflix? I think the answer is simple: people want disposable entertainment, and you don't get more disposable than "Basic."
The thriller was helmed by John McTiernan, and as of this writing, it's the last film McTiernan directed. Maybe that's what's drawing people in here. Maybe couples are gathered around their TV and/or computers, asking each other, "Is John McTiernan's final movie streaming? That's what I'm in the mood for tonight!

It is the 20th anniversary of Lost in Translation. If you look online, you’ll notice that most of the commemoratory coverage has tended to revolve around the changing culture, noting that nobody really wants to spend a couple of hours watching a western film-maker mock Japanese people any more. But Sofia Coppola has managed to stand her ground with a new narrative: how annoyed Spike Jonze was with her depiction of him.
Lost in Translation is a loose retelling of the dissolution of Coppola’s marriage to Jonze. Played by Giovanni Ribisi, the Jonze character is a petulant, self-obsessed man-baby who spends his time flirting with a bubble-headed young woman (Anna Faris) widely assumed to be based on Cameron Diaz.

Fresh off the world premiere of her last directorial effort, “Priscilla,” at the Venice Film Festival (where star Cailee Spaeny won best actress), Sofia Coppola joined Rolling Stone to reflect on the 20th anniversary of her beloved “Lost in Translation.”
Coppola, whose script for “Lost in Translation” won the Oscar for original screenplay, partly used the dissolution of her marriage to fellow director Spike Jonze as inspiration for the film, which follows a college graduate (Scarlett Johansson) who accompanies her celebrity photographer boyfriend (Giovanni Ribisi) on a trip to Tokyo. Sofia Coppola has no desire to see “Her” written and directed by ex-husband Spike Jonze.

Kathy Griffin is the latest celebrity to weigh in on the conviction and 30-years-to-life sentencing of “That ’70s Show” star Danny Masterson for raping two women.
Sharing a video first to TikTok and then Instagram, the comedian denounced the actor’s former costars Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis for writing “character letters” on his behalf, and then opened up about her own experience with sexual abuse within her family and why she tends to “absolutely believe the victims.”
“I’m weighing in on the whole Danny Masterson, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis thing because, you know, it’s so difficult to get a conviction in a rape trial, it’s almost impossible,” Griffin said. She prefaced the video with a sticker reading “trigger warning PSA” and a caption reading, “A hell of a lot of people are responding to this video on TikTok. So, I am putting it up here.

Comedian Kathy Griffin slammed Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher‘s support of Danny Masterson after he was convicted of sexual assault. For years, Griffin tried to have her brother, who committed pedophilia and sexual abuse, arrested. So she can’t understand why anyone would stand by the actor’s side.
Masterson, who starred in That ’70s Show alongside Kutcher and Kunis, was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for two rapes. In an emotional TikTok, Griffin said was disgusted to learn that Masterson also drugged his victims, while at the same time fronting for helping those struggling with addiction.
