A list of the 10 best TV performances of the year could be filled exclusively with actors from Succession, Reservation Dogs and Beef, the top three shows shared by both of our Best of 2023 lists. But what fun would that be? You already know that Sarah Snook and Devery Jacobs and Steven Yeun are great. Or you should.
That’s why, when Angie and I set out to do this list, we started with the simple rule: “Nothing from either of our Top 10 lists.” Those performances and those shows have been celebrated amply, and we wanted to cover as many of the year’s standouts as possible.
Oh, and if it seems like most of our favorite performances of the year were from women? You don’t know the half of it. Had we had more time or space, we would have loved to write about Aunjanue Ellis (Justified: City Primeval...

Chicago – It was another city in another time when Andrew Davis directed his first film “Stony Island” in 1970s Chicago. The film was released in 1978 to acclaim, but faded into the mist of cinema. Andrew Davis is back in his hometown to introduce “Stony Island” at the Gene Siskel Film Center on Friday, November 17th, 2023. For tickets and info, click Stony Island.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Lovingly filmed on the gritty 1970s streets in the Chicago of Andy Davis, the film features his brother Richard Davis as Ritchie, a white boy guitarist trying to break into a Southside rhythm and blues band that cooks with its own brand of Windy City soul. Based a bit on his brother’s actual circumstances, the film features actual singers and players of the era, including a magnificent performance by Gene Barge as Percy Price, the centerpiece cat in the story who ends up in a fate of celebration.

Oh Marvel Cinematic Universe, how times have changed. In just four years you’ve seen your movies open to over $357 million (Avengers: Endgame) to this weekend where The Marvels became your lowest opening ever with just $47 million, about $8 million shy of where we predicted it on Thursday. So what went wrong? First, you seem to have over-saturated your brand. Going to the movies to see these big tent pole films was always an enjoyable experience, but when you branched out into the Disney+ shows that people had to keep up with, it watered down those theatrical experiences. Would I truly enjoy The Marvels if I never saw an episode of Ms. Marvel? That seems to be the big problem as Ms. Marvel is currently the lowest watched Marvel show on Disney+ with just 780,000 viewers compared to something like She-Hulk which drew 1.5 million viewers or Loki which has pulled 2.5 million viewers...

Tom Holland (not the one who plays Spider-Man) was best known as an actor when he was hired to write the screenplay for a project that sounded like an insane idea: a 23-years-later sequel to the Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho. But somehow, Holland and director Richard Franklin managed to deliver a Psycho II (watch it Here) that is a worthy follow-up to the original. Now, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film, Holland has published – through Holland House Entertainment – a 176 page book called Oh Mother, What Have You Done?, which gives a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Psycho II.
Authored by Tom Holland and containing unpublished memoirs by late Psycho II director Richard Franklin and conversations with the film’s editor Andrew London, Oh Mother, What Have You Done? offers fans a unique
glimpse into the continuation of the beloved Psycho film franchise, which created nightmares for millions of
people showering worldwide.

Celebrating its 45th anniversary, director Andrew Davis’ first film “Stony Island” will make its digital debut on major VOD platforms and DVD on Nov. 17. That same day, there will be a theatrical screening of the film at the Gene Siskel Center in Chicago. Following the one-night-only screening, Davis and his brother Richie Davis will host a Q&a session.
“Stony Island” tells the story of “two struggling musicians who buck the odds in their attempt to form an R&b band and take it on the road,” according to a release provided to Variety. It follows Richie Bloom, the only white kid on the block, who forms a band with his best friend Kevin Tucker. Aging sax legend Percy Price mentors them as they pull together a funky supergroup. Armed with little resources and facing heavy losses, the musicians must unite to make their smash debut.

Viewers who tuned in to watch repeats of “Yellowstone” on CBS Sunday night got something they might not have expected — two commercials telling them to watch the show somewhere else.
CBS sold national ad time during the program to rival NBCUniversal, which ran a spot highlighting the availability of the Western-themed drama series on its Peacock streaming hub. “Peacock has all episodes of ‘Yellowstone,’” the commercial says via graphics that appear over scenes from the program. “Stream every season now.” Peacock has streaming rights to the program, even though it’s produced by CBS parent Paramount Global, which first airs the series on its TV networks. “This is a declaration of war,” says one “Yellowstone” character at the end of the spot.
The advertising arrangement shows just how much the advent of streaming has changed relationships between fierce rivals like NBC and CBS. Paramount Global generates revenue from the sale of “Yellowstone” rights to Peacock,...

The Roy boys may not have succeeded their dad on “Succession,” but they can at the Golden Globes. Kieran Culkin is the current odds-on favorite to join his TV father and brother, Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong, respectively, as winners of the Best TV Drama Actor award. And should he prevail in January, “Succession” would become just the second show to produce three different winners in the category.
The only show to achieve this feat is “NYPD Blue,” which yielded three consecutive victories for Davis Caruso in 1994, Dennis Franz in 1995 and Jimmy Smits in 1996. Multiple acting winners per show is rare in this category in general. Besides “Succession” and “NYPD Blue,” “Mission: Impossible” is the only other one with multiple champs, Martin Landau in 1968 and Peter Graves in 1971. Like “NYPD Blue,” “Succession” would win for three consecutive seasons as well — but not in consecutive years. Cox triumphed in 2020 for Season...

In the NYPD Blue Season One episode “Tempest in a C-Cup,” cop Andy Sipowicz and prosecutor Sylvia Costas wind up on an impromptu dinner date. To call the occasion unexpected would be a wild understatement, as we were introduced to the characters at the very start of the series with a drunken, rampaging Sipowicz grabbing his crotch and calling Sylvia a “pissy little bitch.” But Andy is sober now, and Sylvia finds herself charmed by his company. After he tells her about the aquarium of saltwater tropical fish he keeps in his apartment,...

Thirty years ago today, on September 21, 1993, at 10/9c, NYPD Blue premiered on ABC.
However, its debut didn't necessarily mean it reached every household.
The controversial series premiered to apocalyptic fanfare, with critics wondering if the series would usher in the end of TV as viewers knew it.
It’s funny the things you remember from your youth. I was at the age where the idea of a series willing to push the envelope, delivering a taste of the big screen on the small, sounded like an excellent idea.
They say that all publicity is good publicity, but people around the country were so concerned about the effect the show may have on the morals of the everyman that 57 local stations around the country refused to air the premiere.
A month later, there were still 45 ABC affiliates who, due to the possibility of coarse language and nudity, were still not airing it.

Stuart Gordon is known as a master of horror, earning the title from his work on such seminal 1980s genre films as “Re-Animator,” “From Beyond” and “Dolls.” But the director, who died in March 2020, was also a master storyteller — so his family can be forgiven for sometimes wondering if he was prone to fabulation.
“I would compare it to the movie ‘Big Fish’ in how someone might exaggerate,” recalls Jillian Gordon, one of his three daughters. “He would tell you these stories and you’d think, ‘Is that really what happened?’ It was only after he passed and I was going through his emails and archives that I realized it was all true.”
Indeed, Gordon made movies, but his own life had enough twists, turns and serendipitous encounters to be its own film. And now those stranger-than-fiction tales will be shared with audiences when his memoir, “Naked Theater and & Uncensored Horror,...

Former “NYPD Blue” child star Austin Majors’ cause of death has been revealed. The 27-year-old actor died from a fentanyl overdose.
The autopsy results, released Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, attribute Majors’ death to fentanyl toxicity in an accidental manner. Majors died in a homeless shelter in February
The young actor began his career on the ABC drama series, starring in 48 episodes with David Caruso and Dennis Franz. His character, Theo Sipowicz, was the son of Franz’s character Andy Sipowicz.
“[Austin] was a loving, artistic, brilliant, and kind human being. Austin took great joy and pride in his acting career,” his family said in a statement to TMZ at the time of Majors’ daeth. “He was an active Eagle Scout and graduated Salutatorian in High School. He went on to graduate from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts with a passion of directing and music producing.

Welcome to one of the strangest battles in all of Hollywood’s earth-scorched streaming wars.
Tune into TNT or Discovery Channel and chances are you might come upon an ad for a new streaming selection on Peacock or Netflix. Stream something on Max — also owned by the TV networks’ parent, Warner Bros. Discovery — and you’ll see no such thing. Nor are you likely to see commercials for something new from Amazon’s Prime Video on Disney+ or Hulu, though it’s certainly possible such promotions might turn up on some of the TV networks also owned by Disney, such as ABC or ESPN. And chances are virtually nil at the current moment that you’ll see anything touting Paramount+ or Tubi on the new ad-supported tier backed by Netflix.

When Kieran Culkin confirmed in late April that he will submit in Best Drama Actor at the Emmys for the fourth and final season of “Succession” after two supporting bids, it set off a flurry of reactions. One was that it’s the correct call, given the increased focus on Roman (Culkin), Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) this season in the wake of Logan’s (Brian Cox) death in the third episode. Another was that he would split the vote with Strong, the 2020 champ, and Cox, who later confirmed he was staying in lead, paving the way for someone else to triumph. But if either Culkin or Cox pulls out the win, though the latter seems less likely, “Succession” will join rarefied air as one of just two series to win the category for two different people.

Back in the 1980s, John Larroquette dominated Best Comedy Supporting Actor at the Emmys. He won the category four times in a row (1985-88) for playing Dan Fielding on the NBC sitcom “Night Court.” Now, 35 years after his last win for the show and this time in Best Comedy Actor, he’s seeking to join an even more exclusive club of actors who have won five Emmys for playing the same character.
If Larroquette were to claim a fifth Emmy for playing Fielding, he would join three other performers who have also won that amount. Don Knotts won five times in Best Comedy Supporting Actor for his role as Deputy Sherrif Barney Fife on “The Andy Griffith Show” in 1961, 1962, 1963, 1967 and 1968. As far as SAG Awards races go, this year’s Best TV Drama Actress one is especially tricky to predict due to the fact that three of the nominees were just feted for the same roles at the 2022 Emmys. Lead and supporting TV academy honorees Zendaya (“Euphoria”) and Julia Garner (“Ozark”) not only have to face each other in this consolidated category, but are also up against featured limited series Emmy champ Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”), whose show is now classified as a drama due to the inclusion of her character in both of its seasons. In this case, the difficult task of settling on a prediction calls for an analysis of whether or not Zendaya or Garner can reasonably expect one of their drama Emmy wins to translate to a SAG Award triumph.

In the 29-year history of the Screen Actors Guild Awards, there have been exactly 100 instances of TV costars competing directly against each other. This has happened at least 13 times in each of the guild’s six individual TV categories, with the highest number of cases having involved male comedy series performers. Since 1995, 13 different pairs and one trio of cast mates have faced off in the Best TV Comedy Actor category, making for a total of 27 occurrences including rematches. So far, three of the men involved in these battles have won.

This category’s high costar showdown total is partially attributed to “Frasier” actors Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce, who were nominated together eight consecutive times. Pierce prevailed once in 1996 and was later joined on the winners list by Robert Downey Jr. and Jason Sudeikis. Following Austin Majors’ death earlier in the week at the age of 27, his costar on NYPD Blue, Dennis Franz, has paid tribute to the young actor. “I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Austin’s passing. Austin was always such a joy to have on the set. He brought smiles and happiness to everyone,” Franz said in a statement via Deadline. “Some of my favorite scenes during the 12 years of NYPD Blue are with Sipowicz and Theo. Every day that Austin worked, I would greet him with a special song, ‘It’s Austin Major’s Day,’ sung to the tune of Howdy Doody Time. Although we haven’t stayed in touch since the show ended in 2005, I will always remember him fondly. My love and condolences to his family.” Majors played Theo, the son of Franz’s Detective Andy Sipowicz, in 47 episodes across Seasons 6-12, from 1999 to 2004, including...

Three years after he and his “Big Little Lies” cast mates came up short in their drama ensemble SAG Award battle against the team from “The Crown,” Adam Scott has two new chances at being honored by the acting guild. Three decades into his career, he has earned both individual and ensemble notices for his work on Apple TV Plus’ “Severance,” the second season of which is currently in production. Although he is up against some heavy-hitting SAG Awards veterans in the drama actor contest, the freshness of his performance may give him the advantage he needs.
Included among Scott’s solo competitors in Best TV Drama Actor are three men who are also nominated for the drama ensemble prize: Jason Bateman (“Ozark”) and “Better Call Saul” duo Jonathan Banks and Bob Odenkirk. Since 2012, Bob Odenkirk has amassed 11 Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, all of which came for his portrayal of “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” character Jimmy McGill (aka Saul Goodman). Having already triumphed as a member of the former series’ ensemble, he is now vying for his first solo and cast victories for the latter. Given that this is his last chance to be individually honored for his signature role, he may indeed have no trouble avenging his previous four Best TV Drama Actor losses.
Among Odenkirk’s competitors in his solo race are three men who are also nominated as ensemble members, including his own “Better Call Saul” cast mate, Jonathan Banks. The other two are first-time individual nominee Adam Scott (“Severance”) and double drama actor champion Jason Bateman (“Ozark”). A new episode of The Arrow in the Head Show has just been released this morning, and in this one hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek head over to the Bates Motel to discuss one of the most surprisingly good sequels ever made: 1983’s Psycho II (watch it Here)! A movie that came along twenty-three years after its predecessor and somehow managed to be a worthy follow-up to one of the greatest horror movies ever made, Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 classic Psycho. To find out what Lance and The Arrow had to say about Psycho II, check out the video embedded above.
Directed by Richard Franklin from a screenplay by Tom Holland, Psycho II has the following synopsis: Two decades after the original murders at the Bates Motel, Norman Bates completes his treatment at a mental institution and returns home to find his hotel run down under the management of Warren Toomey.

Poker Face, Rian Johnson’s drama series starring Natasha Lyonne as a human bullsh*t detector, wasn’t conceived as a limited series and the Knives Out filmmaker said there are “endless possibilities” to continue in success.
Lyonne stars as Charlie, an effortlessly cool, cheap beer drinking woman with a preternatural ability to solve crimes. After a casino boss seeks her out to use her abilities for nefarious purposes, Charlie goes on the run and gets mixed up in more crimes.
Johnson says that it’s a “how to catch ‘em” rather than a whodunnit as the crime is front and center in each episode.
But while there’s one story that arcs through the ten-episode season, one involving Benjamin Bratt’s security expert, it’s ostensibly a procedural.
Lyonne said that she loved characters such as Peter Falk’s Columbo, Elliott Gould’s Philip Marlowe in The Long Goodbye...

With the reigning Best TV Drama Actor Screen Actors Guild Award winner, Lee Jung-jae, out of contention this year since production on the second season of “Squid Game” hasn’t even begun yet, the category is set to have a new victor. Or is it? Not necessarily. Two-time champ Jason Bateman is back in the running for “Ozark” after the Netflix drama skipped last year’s cycle, and ready to reclaim the award just like he did two years ago.
When the actor took home his second and thus most recent statuette for “Ozark” in 2021, two years after bagging his first in 2019, he became the sixth person to score at least two Best TV Drama Actor prizes for the same show in non-consecutive years. The other five men are:
1. Dennis Franz, “NYPD Blue” (1995 and ’97)
2. Anthony Edwards, “ER” (1996 and ’98)
3. James Gandolfini, “The Sopranos” (2000 and ’03 and ’08)

People who decide to stream HBO Max’s “Sex Lives of College Girls” on its ad-supported tier may be hard-pressed to determine when the show ends and when the commercials begin.
Google has signed on to be the exclusive sponsor of the second season of the program, which, as its title implies, examines young women at college navigating sexually active lifestyles. Rather than seeing typical TV commercials, subscribers will see just two 15 second spots featuring Amrit Kaus and Pauline Chalamet, two actors from the series. The hope is that viewers won’t feel like the show is being interrupted because they’ll get to see more content with its stars.
“Streaming platforms offer new opportunities for us to be far more relevant than we were in the traditional linear environment, and that’s where we are going to go,” says Garrick Schmitt, executive vice president of global experience design at Essence,...

While Jason Bateman has never won an acting Emmy for “Ozark,” he has triumphed twice at the SAG Awards for Best Drama Actor, both of which being slight surprises. The first time was in 2019, when many thought Sterling K. Brown would continue his streak for “This Is Us,” who won the year before, and the second and most recent win was in 2021 when Season 4 of “The Crown” was the talk of the town and pundits were predicting future Emmy winner Josh O’Connor to go along for the ride, as he also bested Bateman at the Golden Globes. Now the question will be if he can go triple the success for the show’s final season and tie James Gandolfini‘s (“The Sopranos”) SAG Awards record for the most wins in the category.

When the ABC drama “NYPD Blue” premiered in the fall of 1993, it shocked and impressed viewers with its gritty portrayal of the lives of police officers. Its initial plot structure that evenly focused on two detective partners was quickly reworked when one, Andy Sipowicz, surged in popularity. Dennis Franz starred as Sipowicz for the entire dozen-year duration of the series, during which the character changed partners three times. By 1999, Franz had made history as the first quadruple Best Drama Actor Emmy winner.
Franz’s last victory came for his work in the sixth season episode “Safe Home,” wherein his character’s mental state is exacerbated by his alcoholism following the brutal killing of his wife, Sylvia (Sharon Lawrence). With this win, the 54-year-old retained his previously acquired position as the category’s eighth oldest champion. Over two decades later, he still places among the top 10.

It was the last year to date that the Big Four Networks won the major 14 Emmy Awards — Best Comedy and Drama Series, Lead and Supporting Actor and Actress in Comedy and Drama, and Writing and Directing for Comedy and Drama. In the new multi-part History Channel documentary, The Center Seat, actor Armin Shimmerman — famous for playing Quark on Deep Space Nine — makes a poignant observation: Star Trek is really popular, but it’s not “beloved in Hollywood.” Shimmerman wasn’t throwing shade at the Hollywood establishment in general, but the point he was making was a little more nuanced: Despite being the most long-running, multi-faceted, and socially relevant science-fiction franchise in the history of both TV and film, Star Trek doesn’t get nominated, nor does it win, mainstream acting awards… like, ever.
This fact is intellectually offensive when you start to think about not just how many good actors have been on Star Trek, but also, how many specific performances have been ignored by the Emmys, the Golden Globes, and the Oscars. Recently, I caught up with documentary filmmaker Brian Volk-Weiss, the man behind The Center Seat (as well...

Three years after taking home the Best Drama Actor Emmy for “The Americans,” Matthew Rhys is back in the game with “Perry Mason.” The star wouldn’t be the first person to win an Emmy for playing Perry Mason — Raymond Burr snagged two statuettes for the Og series — but a victory for the HBO reboot would give Rhys some unique distinction in Emmy history: He would be the first person to win the category multiple times for playing different characters on different dramas.

Akira Kurosawa wrote the original story for this slam-bang action picture that finally got Cannon Films on a, ‘Hey this is a great movie’ list or two. Mean, nasty, desperate men make an impossible escape attempt across a frozen landscape that might as well be on the moon. Jon Voight gets to use the same eccentric gimmicks that Dustin Hoffman exploited, and comes off great while Andrei Konchalovsky showed Cannon what a brilliant director could do. The show also established Eric Roberts and Rebecca De Mornay as talents to watch.

For the second year in a row, the reigning TV drama actor Screen Actors Guild Award champ is not in the running — Peter Dinklage is gone because, duh, “Game of Thrones” is — but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s anyone’s game. Former champ Jason Bateman (“Ozark”) is back and leads our odds, and he could do something that’s actually pretty common in this category — reclaim the title — but with a twist.
Bateman, who won two years ago and was ineligible last year because “Ozark” skipped the cycle, would be the 10th person to win the award at least twice and the sixth to do it non-consecutively. “The Sopranos'” James Gandolfini has a record three trophies, all non-consecutive, in 2000, ’03 and ’08. The eight men who have two statuettes are:
1. Dennis Franz, “NYPD Blue”
2. Anthony Edwards, “ER”
3. Martin Sheen, “The West Wing” (2001-02)
4. Kiefer Sutherland, “24”
5. Hugh Laurie, “House”
6. Steve Buscemi,...

Exclusive: Mindful that David Mamet gave me the best quote I’ve ever gotten in 30 years of trade reporting, I have been chasing him down to try to get him to answer a question on my mind. What does it feel like for a great writer of dialogue to have an actor like the late Sean Connery — who won his only Oscar with the Mamet-scripted Brian De Palma-directed drama The Untouchables — elevate the words like Connery did as the rough and tumble Irish cop Jim Malone? Or, for that matter, when Alec Baldwin and the other stellar stars turned Glengarry Glen Ross in a master class in toxic testosterone.
But when you talk to him, Mamet is like his best plays and scripts: unpredictable. That was the case back in my Daily Variety days, when I got Mamet on the phone to discuss the abrupt exit of actor Jeremy Piven...
