A new episode of The Arrow in the Head Show has just been released, and in this one hosts John “The Arrow” Fallon and Lance Vlcek are talking about Poltergeist – but not the Tobe Hooper / Steven Spielberg classic from 1982. The Poltergeist movie they’re focusing on in this episode is the 1986 sequel Poltergeist II: The Other Side (watch it Here), the one with the creepy reverend and the tequila worm. To find out what they had to say about it, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Brian Gibson from a screenplay written by Michael Grais and Mark Victor, Poltergeist II has the following synopsis: The Freelings have escaped their haunted house, which is now being studied by paranormal investigators, including shaman Taylor. Angela Bassett, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is widely regarded as one of the greatest actresses of her generation. She was nominated 29 years ago for the best actress Oscar for her portrayal of Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It, making her the only Black person nominated for the best actress Oscar in the 1990s, and she is nominated this year for the best supporting actress Oscar her portrayal of Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, making her only the fourth Black actress who has received more than one acting Oscar nomination, and the first person ever nominated for a performance in a Marvel movie.
Of Bassett — who has also won two Golden Globe Awards, for the aforementioned two films, and has been nominated for seven Primetime Emmy Awards, for a variety of programs — Time film critic Richard Corliss...

“That representation that I longed for when I was a young actor coming up? To be able to offer that, to be given the opportunity to offer that, is a dream come true,” Angela Bassett said during a career-retrospective interview on Thursday prior to receiving the Santa Barbara International Film Festival’s Montecito Award in recognition of her body of work and her 2022 Oscar-nominated turn as Queen Ramonda in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. “It’s a full-circle moment.”

Nearly 20 years after her first Oscar nomination, Best Supporting Actress contender Angela Bassett revealed at the 2023 Santa Barbara International Film Festival that shooting “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” was way more grueling on her than most people may have realized.
“We would do scenes over and over and over again,” said the actress on stage at the Arlington Theater on Thursday night, recalling the making of the 1993 Tina Turner biopic. “Those concert scenes, literally you feel like you have a sweater in your throat after performing, and we would do it [again] from top to bottom.”
Though she is now able to joke about it, Bassett did not mince words describing the challenges that came with being directed by English filmmaker Brian Gibson. “He’d say, ‘Ok, let’s do it again.’ I was like, ‘Can an actor have a moment? Just 60 seconds, a minute, please, just to catch our breath.

With her Golden Globe nomination this year for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (2022), Angela Bassett now has a chance to win a bookend trophy to the one she first claimed 29 years ago for “What’s Love Got to Do with It” (1993). That popular musical biopic was based on the life of Tina Turner, with Bassett portraying the superstar and Laurence Fishburne taking on the role of her husband, Ike Turner. During her [relatively short] acceptance speech, the actress made sure to give Turner, whom she dubbed a “national treasure,” a shout-out at the podium. Watch the Golden Globes flashback video above.
“Thank you, Hollywood Foreign Press for honoring me so wonderfully this evening and for finding favor in my portrayal of Tina Turner,” Bassett proclaimed after the applause died down. “Thank you, my director Brian Gibson. The greatest co-star I could ever imagine, Mr. Laurence Fishburne. I love you, Laurence, thank you. And lastly,...

Laurence Fishburne (John Wick: Chapter 4) and Clifton Collins Jr. (Nightmare Alley) have signed on to star in the upcoming film Frank & Louis, which Petra Volpe is directing for Participant, Zodiac Pictures and Tyler Perry’s Peachtree & Vine Productions.
In Frank & Louis, a man serving a life sentence (Collins) takes an in-prison job caring for aging and infirm prisoners suffering from memory loss diseases—including one played by Fishburne. What starts as a self-serving mission for parole turns into a deep emotional and transformative relationship, offering a glimmer of redemption in an otherwise unforgiving place.
Volpe and Esther Bernstorff wrote the script. Participant will produce alongside Reto Schaerli and Lukas Hobi of Zodiac Pictures, and Perry and Tim Palen of Peachtree & Vine. Cora Olson is co-producing, with Jeff Skoll and Anikah McLaren of Participant serving as exec producers. McLaren, Elizabeth Haggard and Connor DeSha will oversee the project for Participant.

Plans were afoot to make Poltergeist 2's preacher a recurring horror character to rival the likes of Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers...
In Poltergeist II, directed by Brian Gibson, Reverend Henry Kane - played by Julian Beck - was a doomsday cult leader in the early 19th century, who promised to save his followers from the end of the world by hiding them in an underground cavern below what later became the Freeling familys' property. But Kane had an ulterior motive. And according to an interview at Poltergeist 3: The Website, Kane was on his way to achieving the iconic horror status of Freddy Krueger or Michael Myers by becoming the beast.
“I was at Universal in the early 90s and I heard about Poltergeist 4,” industry insider Macklin Crux told the site. “Someone told me about a new script that was being developed about the pre-story: Kane and his followers.

Hell's Kitchen: Soul stew image likely from the 1922 Benjamin Christensen horror classic 'Häxan / Witchcraft Through the Ages.' Day of the Dead post: Cinema's Top Five Scariest Living Dead We should all be eternally grateful to the pagans, who had the foresight to come up with many (most?) of the overworked Western world's religious holidays. Thanks to them, besides Easter, Christmas, New Year's, and possibly Mardi Gras (a holiday in some countries), we also have Halloween, All Saints' Day, and the Day of Dead. The latter two are public holidays in a number of countries with large Catholic populations. Since today marks the end of the annual Halloween / All Saints' Day / Day of the Dead celebrations, I'm posting my revised and expanded list of the movies' Top Five Scariest Living Dead. Of course, by that I don't mean the actors listed below were dead when the movies were made.

It turned unknown punk singer Hazel O'Connor into a household name, but that wasn't the only way the 1980 movie mirrored events in the star's own life
Hazel O'Connor, singer/actor
I was a struggling singer-songwriter who had signed to Albion Records for a pound. To make extra money, I also did shifts answering their phones. One day, a casting agency rang up asking if they could speak to someone about Hazel O'Connor. I said: "That's me."
Andy Czezowski, who ran the Roxy punk club in London, had suggested me for a role as an extra in Breaking Glass, a film about a struggling punk singer who makes it big and goes gaga. I'd been reading a book called Bring Out the Magic in Your Mind. So I daydreamed three things: a) at the auditions they go, "My God, she's amazing – let's give her the lead"; b) they ask me to...

Villains have always been and will always be some of the most fascinating and memorable characters in the world of genre film. Here we will take a look at the greatest villains of cinema from the 1990’s.
The criteria for this article is the same as in my previous articles Cinema’s Greatest Villains: The 1970’s and Cinema’s Greatest Villains: The 1980’s: the villains must be from live-action films-no animated features-and must pose some type of direct of indirect lethal threat. The villains can either be individuals or small groups that act as one unit.
The villains must be human or human in appearance. Also, individuals that are the central protagonists/antiheroes of their respective films were excluded.
Brad Dourif as The Gemini Killer in The Exorcist III (William Peter Blatty, 1990): Veteran actor Dourif is intense and unforgettable as an executed murderer inhabiting someone else’s body in...

They’re the foundation of any movie, but they’re often a great read in their own right. Here, Ryan explains why movie scripts can be so fascinating…
To the casual eye, a film or television script might look like a somewhat dry jumble of dialogue snippets, arcane abbreviations, and brief scene descriptions. Some might even argue that reading a script for pleasure is a bit like staring at the blueprint for a classic building instead of visiting the real thing.
Once the conventions of scriptwriting are understood, however, the hundred-or-so pages of an average script are often fascinating to read, for several reasons.
Some scripts are simply entertaining in their own right. Screenwriter Shane Black, for example, who’s famous for his sharp dialogue and creative insults, injects just as much humour and personality into his scene descriptions. In his first screenplay, Lethal Weapon, Black described an expensive Beverly...

Julian Beck, Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) Peter Wyngarde, The Innocents: Top Five Scariest Living Dead Pt.3 Brian Gibson's Poltergeist II: The Other Side is probably one of the worst, most tedious horror movies I've ever seen. But the Poltergeist sequel did offer one memorable sequence featuring avant-garde theater multitasker Julian Beck, who died in 1985 while working on the film. As a demonic Christian, Beck doesn't do much in his brief role; his underplaying, however, ends up making his character's malevolence all the spookier. In fact, I find Beck's deeply wrinkled, gargoylish face — so much like that of a couple of priests at my Catholic school — much scarier than the better-known, colorful façades of, say, Jason, Freddy, or Norman Bates' mom.

Breaking Glass, the seminal 1980 musical movie about the London punk and new wave scene starring English rock queen Hazel O’Connor, will receive its U.S. DVD and Blu-ray debut on Aug. 16 from Olive Films. The film isn’t listed on Amazon yet, but give it a day or so.
Hazel O'Connoor is shattered in Breaking Glass.
Written and directed by Brian Gibson, the film focuses on Kate (O’Connor), the lead singer of a rock group called — surprise! — Breaking Glass. Kate’s socialist ways of thinking slam up against those of her pragmatic manager, Danny (Phil Daniels, Quadrophenia), a streetwise hustler who discovers her and tries to maker her into a star.
Ms. O’Connor, who’s still an active recording and performing artist, wrote and performed 13 songs in the film, which co-stars Jon Finch (Macbeth) and a young Jonathan Pryce (Brazil) as the band’s junkie saxophone player.

Anniversaries are important. An upbringing by a strong-willed, independently spirited mother taught me that. It’s more than appropriate then, that the same woman passed along to me a love of movies — chick flicks mostly, but movies nonetheless. I was the only kid in my high school who would rather sit around on a Friday night and watch movies with his mom than run around the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio doing whatever it is the primarily pasty suburban youths of Cleveland, Ohio did on a given Friday night. I suppose Film School Rejects was born there, in theory. Technically though, it was born on February 15, 2006. Exactly five years prior to this very day, depending on what time zone you’re in. And that’s the anniversary I’d like to spend a moment remembering. Because anniversaries are important, as they remind us where we’ve been and where we might go in the future. Where...

Craig here with Take Three
Today: Laurence Fishburne
Take One: Security vans and alien lands
It’s a cheeky sidestep this week. More of a Take Six – although still in three bite-size chunks. For starters, there’s two roles in a couple of nifty, no-fuss genre hits that he contributed supporting turns to recently: Armored (2009) and Predators (2010), both directed by Nimród Antal. In the former he was one of six average Joes – disgruntled security guards feeling the blue collar recessionary bite – hedging their bets on a massive, self-devised and of course ill-thought-out stolen loot payout. Fishburne was Baines, the brawny, aggressive one to whom nobody gave any truck. Along with Matt Dillon, Jean Reno and Fred Ward he lent Armored a hefty dose of gruff gravitas. He got to exercise his infectiously throaty laugh, shoot people willy-nilly and royally show up many of the other supporting actors (Skeet Ulrich I'm...

Last year, Hollywood’s fallen angel Mickey Rourke had hisbig time comeback, scooping up awards for his performance in The Wrestler. And,having known what it was like to be down-and-out, he made this public plea ashe accepted his Independent Spirit Award for Best Actor, "Eric Roberts isgreat actor, and you should all give him a break like you did me.”
Rourke’s Pope of Greenwich Village co-star seemed to wince alittle, but he really could use a break. He was after all, once more than justJulia’s brother and Emma’s dad. And with some stellar performances early in hiscareer, it seemed he could have been a contender. He could have been somebody.
So did Tinseltown big wigs listen to Mickey? Well, Robertscertainly has had an interesting year. He was in one of the biggestblockbusters of the year, the has-been-action-star filled flick TheExpendables. He did a...

I attempted a lengthy explanation to describe the point I'm trying to make with the examples below, but my own circular logic eventually short-circuited my brain and I deleted it. So, draw your own conclusions based on the evidence below. The person who explains the point I'm trying to make the best gets cake. I'm not even kidding. I will bake you a goddamn cake and send it to your house. That's how much this means to me. And I make a mean motherfucking cake, people.

This week on the Blu-ray market, I come back from the Sundance Film Festival to an enormous stack of Blu-ray movies ready to be reviewed. And it's not just one kind we're talking about -- it's a wide range of titles, from intense Muai Thai action to hilarious zombies to classic Broadway converts to a few scary ass flicks, with one quote-whoring performance from yours truly thrown in for good measure. It's just one of those weeks -- and quite fitting, seeing as I had such a wonderful time at Sundance. So lets get started as we dig into This Week in Blu-ray. Also notable this week is Brian Gibson, who chimes in with a buy recommendation of Planet Hulk. Read on to find out why... Doctor Who: The Complete Specials My recent foray into the Doctor Who has taught me many things. One is that I will now spend years trying to catch up on...

Much has gone down since Rhode Island noise duo Lightning Bolt released its last album, 2005’s Hypermagic Mountain. Baltimore and L.A. have supplanted Providence as America’s avant-rock capitals. The indie world has grown softer and safer. And Lightning Bolt itself has mostly been silent. Into this void, drummer-vocalist Brian Chippendale and bassist Brian Gibson have plunked Earthly Delights—and it’s as much a panic button as a reset button for the band. Delights is a spasm of psychedelic anxiety full of mutant-metal riffs and intricate drumming that’s heavier on fuzz and lighter on fidelity than ...

Like Charles Foster Kane, Gordon Gekko, and Victor Mancini before him, Fsr's regular DVD columnist Brian Gibson has seen the limits of excess... and he has paid the price. Years of snorting DVDs, mainlining Blu-ray discs, and fornicating with pop culture figurines in back alleys has finally caught up with him.
