From venue changes and the pandemic to political backlash and the threat of litigation, Salem Horror Fest founder and director Kay Lynch has never been one to back down. The festival’s seventh annual event, which kicked off last night at Salem’s Peabody Essex Museum, was further proof of her resilience.
After its original headliner, Hocus Pocus star Kathy Najimy, canceled with less than 48 hours notice, the festival’s entire opening night ceremony was restructured. On lieu of the original $50 ticket charge, the program was made free (with the option to make a donation), costing the festival an untold amount of money.
But the show must go on — and it did so in spectacular fashion with horror icon Linnea Quigley sitting down for a live interview, while the Hocus Pocus screening was replaced by The People’s Joker, previously scheduled to be the festival’s closing film.

Back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, Anchor Bay Entertainment was a major player in the horror world, giving DVD releases to films like the Evil Dead trilogy, George A. Romero’s Dead trilogy, the Sleepaway Camp franchise, The Hills Have Eyes, The Car, Maniac, Prom Night, some of the Hellraisers, Halloweens, and much more. Then things changed, and eventually Anchor Bay got folded into Lionsgate Home Entertainment… but now Deadline reports that the Anchor Bay Entertainment label is being revived, and the revival is starting off with the releases of puppet horror film Abruptio and Dinner with Leatherface, a documentary that looks at the life, career, and legacy of original Leatherface actor Gunnar Hansen!
Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are behind the return of Anchor Bay Entertainment, and they’re planning to use the label to bring the world “genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics,...

A familiar label for horror fans is getting a resurrection. Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are bringing back a new iteration of Anchor Bay Entertainment with the goal to curate a new library of films for distribution, projects that range from new release genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics, and remastered catalog releases.
The new launch comes with a pair of acquisition titles: puppet horror film Abruptio and documentary Dinner with Leatherface.
“We had an opportunity to take the name of a beloved genre film brand, one we feel a personal connection to, for our new company,” says Zambeck in a press release statement. “This is a new venture, unaffiliated with any previous incarnations. We aim to honor the history and spirit of the past as we look for interesting films that break the mold, and will be discovered by new generations for years to come.”

Exclusive: Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are bringing back a new Anchor Bay Entertainment with an eye on genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics, and remastered catalog releases.

In Lionsgate’s acquisition of Starz in December 2016, the studio absorbed the North American branches of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The Anchor Bay Entertainment trademark was up for acquisition so Zambeck and Katz took the opportunity to acquire it. The new Anchor Bay Entertainment doesn’t include the previous label’s library.

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, it all comes to an end as Rachel Reeves searches for scares in the suburbs.
In the back half of the 1980s, the American suburbs experienced a resurgence in popularity. As global instabilities stabilized and economies began to boom, moving to the suburbs became a sign of financial and professional success. Primarily populated by young families, the suburbs also became associated with traditional family values, safety, and community. However, as any true crime enthusiast knows, some things (and some people) are not always as innocent as they appear.

Visual Vengeance, a Blu-ray label dedicated to vintage ‘Shot on Video’ and microbudget genre independents from the 1980s though 2000s, has released its next Blu-ray collector’s edition, the lost Linnea Quigley movie Scream Queen (2002).
Considered a ‘lost’ Linnea Quigley movie, Scream Queen now enjoys it first ever wide release on home video.
Horror star Malicia Tombs (Linnea Quigley) mysteriously dies after leaving the set of her latest, now unfinished, low budget Shot-on-video shocker. Soon, an unseen masked killer is chopping and hacking his/ her way through the cast and crew as punishment for Tomb’s death – leaving a bloody trail of revenge.
This super obscurity was shot in 1998 by indie horror stalwart Brad Sykes, and finally finished in 2002. Considered a ‘lost’ Linnea Quigley movie, Scream Queen is not only a solid 1990s Shot-on-Video slasher that borrows from the Italian Giallo sub-genre, but also takes swift jabs at the US...

Linnea Quigley has more than earned her spot as a preeminent scream queen. In addition to genre classics like The Return of the Living Dead, Silent Night, Deadly Night, and Night of the Demons, the actress was so prolific throughout the ’80s and ’90s that some of her micro-budget B-movies are still being discovered to this day. Scream Queen is, in fact, the second “lost” Quigley film unearthed by Visual Vengeance, following Heartland of Darkness.
25 years after its inception, Scream Queen is reaching viewers on Blu-ray. The bulk of the flick was shot on S-vhs in less than a week in early 1998 with the rest being piecemealed together on weekends. Post-production was finally completed in 2002, after which it received a blink-and-you-miss-it VHS release. A DVD release was planned in 2012 but fell through at the last minute due to the distributor’s bankruptcy.

Why do some of the best horror movies revolve around a holiday setting? Could the thought of having to be cooped up with our families send us into a monstrous rage? Or maybe it’s the idea of something that is usually so cheerful and happy is invaded by death and terror. These two things typically don’t go together, so seeing the two mashed up together in all its bloody glory can be satisfying. Eli Roth is finally bringing his entry into the Grindhouse series to life, leaving only two trailers unmade. Thanksgiving is a bloody good time (read our review) and puts us in the mood for more holiday horror. When planning your horror year, what are some of the best holiday slasher films? Let’s find out.

The episode of The Test of Time covering Silent Night, Deadly Night was Written by Andrew Hatfield, Narrated by Niki Minter, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by John Fallon and Tyler Nichols, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Wading through the many aspects of a movie to decide if it stands the Test of Time is one of the fun parts of this journey. Often times, we’ve looked at classics that are genuinely seen as good in most aspects and decide if it was good just for its era or if it was able to transcend its place in time and still be a good time today. Last year we looked at Christmas Evil, a movie that still is underseen, but is a true holiday classic. While Black Christmas is probably on the Mount Rushmore of both Slashers And Christmas Horror and doesn’t require a re-evaluation, what about Silent Night,...

1984 was a good year for slashers. Not only did Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) claw his way onto the big screen for the first time, Jason Voorhees (Ted White) also burst through windows and slashed through teens in the franchise high Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. While Wes Craven was releasing his genre-defining classic A Nightmare on Elm Street, another iconic killer was crawling out of a snow-lined chimney. Charles E. Sellier Jr.’s Silent Night, Deadly Night treated audiences to Billy Chapman (Robert Brian Wilson), an ax-wielding mad-man dressed as a sinister Santa Claus. This exploitative film quickly sparked controversy from horrified parents worried that their children might glimpse the jolly gift-giver dishing out bloody punishment instead of holiday cheer. An avalanche of pearl-clutching soon followed, including angry letters and protests eventually resulting in Tri-star pulling the film after only a few weeks. Despite this chilly reaction, the film...

Best known for her roles in ’80s classics like The Return of the Living Dead, Night of the Demons, and Silent Night, Deadly Night, actress Linnea Quigley has over 170 screen acting credits to her name – and sadly, some of the movies she has worked on have slipped through the cracks over the decades. Last year, Visual Vengeance gave the Quigley film Heartland of Darkness – which was shot in 1989, then got “lost in obscurity and distribution false starts” for over thirty years – a Blu-ray release. Now they’re set to do the same for another lost Quigley project, Scream Queen. They’re bringing this one to Blu-ray on November 28th, and copies can be pre-ordered at This Link.

I would be late with this announcement of November programming on Screambox is the programming had already started. Considering it starts today then I think I am bang on time. Starting today with Linnea Quigley's Horror Workout Screambox has a smack of great programming coming up this month. The big title of the month should be Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls. Our own Kurt caught the horror comedy when it played at Calgary Undergound in the Spring. There are many flavours of hubris. An over inflated or confident self image we attempt to project out to the world. What we think we know or what we think we deserve deserve. The faith we place in our idols, our gods, in...

With Halloween just around the corner now is the perfect time to revisit two slasher classics, The Barn and The Barn Part II, both now streaming on Screambox as SVOD exclusives, thanks to Terror Films.
Justin M. Seaman‘s 2016 horror movie The Barn is a retro throwback horror movie that takes you back to 1989.
“The Barn is a love letter to monster movies and the campy decade where they reigned supreme, that’s as fun as it is bloody!” wrote Daniel Kurland back in 2016.
In the film…
“It’s Halloween 1989, and best friends Sam and Josh are trying to enjoy what’s left of their final Devil’s Night before graduating high school. But trouble arises when the two pals and a group of friends take a detour on their way to a rock concert, finding an old abandoned barn and awakening the evil inside. Now it’s up to...

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, 1988’s Night of the Demons is a perfect Halloween party movie; not merely because the plot involves a Halloween party, but it embodies the spirit of the holiday.
Director Kevin Tenney (Witchboard) and writer Joe Augustyn veer between creepy and campy throughout the 90-minute runtime. A playfully spooky atmosphere is immediately established by the Scooby Doo-esque animated credit sequence set to a bombastic synth theme by the director’s brother, Dennis Michael Tenney.
The plot follows a group of rowdy high schoolers to a deadly party at the infamous Hull House. As goth hostess Angela Franklin (Amelia Kinkade) explains, the abandoned abode is possessed rather than haunted: “The spirits living in a house possessed never existed in human form. They’ve only existed in spirit form. They’re pure evil. They’re demons.” A seance awakens the spirits, who start turning the partygoers into savage demons.

The first week of October is officially here, so it’s full steam ahead on the Halloween season from here on out. This week’s streaming picks embrace spooky season festivities by centering on holiday-themed horror movies that feature Halloween parties as their slaying grounds.
Some of these horror movies bring the fun, while others aim to spike your adrenaline. But all use Halloween parties as a centerpiece for the horror that’s unleashed within.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.
For more Stay Home, Watch Horror picks, click here.
Cemetery of Terror – AMC+, Shudder
Rubén Galindo Jr.’s most prominent horror feature is the American-influenced Don’t Panic (available on Shudder), but the Halloween-centric Cemetery of Terror offers the most fun. A trio of college kids decides to impress their ladies by stealing a body from a morgue for a Halloween prank and party in an abandoned house.

Almost forty years ago, writer/director Dan O’Bannon delivered one of the most highly entertaining zombie movies of all time with The Return of the Living Dead (watch it Here)… and in the process, spawned a franchise. There was the goofy comedy of The Return of the Living Dead Part II, the “Romeo and Juliet with zombies” love story Return of the Living Dead ///, and a couple sequels nobody paid much attention to, Return of the Living Dead: Necropolis and Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave. The franchise has been dormant for eighteen years – but it may be revived very soon. It has come to our attention that Muck and Kill Her Goats director Steve Wolsh, who also happens to be the CEO of the company Living Dead Media, is developing a reboot of The Return of the Living Dead.

Back in 1990, legendary scream queen Linnea Quigley – whose many horror movie credits include The Return of the Living Dead, Night of the Demons, Witchtrap, Graduation Day, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Nightmare Sisters, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, and Silent Night, Deadly Night – made her own hour-long, horror-themed workout video. A release that was appropriately called Linnea Quigley’s Horror Workout… and which has now been given a special edition Blu-ray release! Copies can be purchased at This Link.
Directed by Kenneth J. Hall, Linnea Quigley’s Horror Workout has the following synopsis: After a nice shower, Linnea does some warm-up stretches and then goes for a run. She encounters some flabby zombies who follow her back to the house, where she leads them in some poolside aerobic routines. Later she unwinds by inviting some girlfriends over for a slumber party and some exercise.

Following the one-two punch of 1986’s Witchboard and 1988’s Night of the Demons — both of which yielded sizable profits in the video store market — filmmaker Kevin Tenney was eager to return to his independent roots and make a movie without interference. He and his team managed to raise $400,000 with the caveat that it had to be used within a short time frame. As a result, Tenney wrote the script in a mere six days.
The result is 1989’s Witchtrap, so named in a thinly-veiled effort to capitalize on his previous success. (The feature was preceded on VHS with a forthright notice to viewers: “This motion picture is not a sequel to Witchboard.”) The rushed script turned out to be only the first of several issues that would haunt the production.
Tenney populated the cast with amateur actors who had appeared in his early student films as a show of gratitude.

From director Justin M. Seaman, both The Barn and The Barn: Part II are now streaming on Screambox, and the sequel is now getting its own video and board game!
Seaman explains, “I’ve spent the last decade building and marketing the world of The Barn to all the fans who have made the series what it has evolved into today. The 1985 zombie horror comedy The Return of the Living Dead (watch it Here) has some awesome poster art, featuring green-skinned zombies that are “back from the dead and ready to party”. Now the folks at Super7, a company that’s described as being “the premier pop-culture design house and producer of lifestyle-oriented collectibles, toys and apparel”, have taken to social media to reveal that they have turned a couple of those poster zombies into ReAction Figures! These figures will be available for purchase sometime this summer, but for now you can take a look at a picture of them at the bottom of this article.

The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
The Barn
Before The Barn Part II streams exclusively on Screambox on May 26, catch up on the 2016 original. The Barn stands out among the glut of ’80s slasher throwbacks because it’s not satirical or a send-up; the unapologetic love letter approaches the well-trodden material with a refreshing earnestness. Capturing not only the style but also the spirit of his influences, writer-director Justin M. Seaman taps directly into horror fans’ nostalgia while introducing an imaginative mythology with ample heart in a charming package.
At its core, the film is a coming of age tale about a teenager who doesn’t want to grow...
