At a time when syndicated science fiction was just Star Trek series, it took some guts on Warner Bros’ part to try something darker and more experimental with J. Michael Straczynski’s Babylon 5, designed to tell a sprawling epic that was more political than it was space opera. The show arrived thirty years ago and was successful enough to spawn spin-off five telefilms and a short-lived spinoff, spanning 1993-2007.
The core of it, the 110 episodes from the original five-season series, have been remastered and collected on a nice Blu-ray box set from Warner Home Entertainment. Also included is the original pilot film.
Set in the 23rd century, the Earth Alliance has found its place among star-faring races, notably the Minbari and the Centauri. Some of these races are fine with humans; others wish them gone. Then there are the Vorlons, and no one knows what they want.

J. Michael Straczynski is back with a new installment in his imaginative Babylon 5 series. The difference this time is that it’s a 76-minute animated feature film, released this week from Warner Home Entertainment.
B5 launched into syndicated television sixteen years ago, featuring a somewhat darker, more nuanced approach to the future. It was filled before and behind the camera with people well-versed in the Sf tropes, but used that to twist things and keep them fresh.
Here, Babylon 5 The Road Home, feels far more familiar. We’re set in the time after the Shadow War as we focus on President John Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner) and his wife Delenn (Rebecca Riedy) adjusting to running the 12-world Interstellar Alliance. Just as he leaves, he’s caught in the tried and true time warp allowing him to visit various parallel realities as we revisit more familiar characters and settings.
Familiarity, in this case,...

It may have taken a long time to get here, but Babylon 5 is finally making the leap to Blu-ray. Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment announced today that all five seasons of the iconic sci-fi series will be released on Blu-ray on December 5th.
Babylon 5 has previously only been available on DVD and the image quality wasn’t always the best, so fans have been waiting for this moment for quite some time. You can check out the official box art for Babylon 5: The Complete Series below, which strangely doesn’t feature the titular space station.

A new version of the Emmy-winning space opera television series Babylon 5 is in the works. The CW has put in development Babylon 5, described as a “from-the-ground-up reboot” of the critically acclaimed 1990s series, from original series creator J. Michael Straczynski and Warner Bros. Television.
Written by Straczynski, the reboot revolves around John Sheridan (played by Bruce Boxleitner in the original series), an Earthforce officer with a mysterious background, who is assigned to Babylon 5, a five-mile-long space station in neutral space, a port of call for travelers, smugglers, corporate explorers and alien diplomats at a time of uneasy peace and the constant threat of war. His arrival triggers a destiny beyond anything he could have imagined, as an exploratory Earth company accidentally triggers a conflict with a civilization a million years ahead of us, putting Sheridan and the rest of the B5 crew in the line of fire as the last,...

Tracy Scoggins is listed as still current when it comes to her career but at this time it doesn’t appear that she’s done much of anything on screen since 2014. If she is still acting it might be that she’s taking a long break or possibly considering if it’s time to walk away, though the jury is out on that notion at the moment since a lot of actors can step away for a while and then come back ready to go again. As someone that’s been in the business since the late 70s Scoggins knows very well how the

There are plenty of interesting directions a return to the Babylon 5 universe could take. Here are a few suggestions...
I read somewhere that J.M. Straczynski writes every day. That’s not surprising given his extensive body of work for television, motion pictures, novels and comics. He is best known for Babylon 5, of course. I remember what a lot of people used to say about Babylon 5, “How much can happen on a space station?” Well, a lot actually! And after five seasons of the original series, a bunch of made-for-tv movies and a couple of spin-offs, there are still plenty of stories left to tell.
That is why I was excited recently to read that Joe (apparently, he thinks you’re cool if you just call him Joe) was going back to work on Babylon 5. My excitement soon turned to dread when I found out that...

"Ally McBeal" and "Brothers & Sisters" actress Calista Flockhart has scored a key role in CBS' upcoming "Supergirl" TV series.
The story centers on Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist). Having been raised by a family who taught her to repress her innate abilities, the now 24-year-old young woman begins embracing her extraordinary abilities and becomes the hero known as Supergirl.
Flockhart will play DC Comics character Cat Grant, in this version a self-made media magnate and founder of CatCo who started her career as a reporter and has built her company into a global powerhouse. Kara is her assistant.
Tracy Scoggins previously played a version of Cat Grant in NBC's "Lois and Clark" series back in the 1990s.

CBS' "Supergirl" pilot has cast a familiar name to play a familiar character from elsewhere in the comics Super-universe, hiring "Ally McBeal" and "Brothers & Sisters" alum Calista Flockhart to play Cat Grant. Introduced into Superman comics in the '80s, Cat was a sexpot reporter at the Daily Planet and romantic rival of Lois Lane's for Clark Kent's affections. On TV, she's previously been played by Tracy Scoggins in "Lois & Clark," and by Keri Lynn Pratt on "Smallville." The character is getting a bit of a reinvention here, described by Warner Bros. as "A self-made media magnate and founder of CatCo, Cat Grant started her career as a reporter and has built her company into a global powerhouse. Kara (series star Melissa Benoist) works at CatCo as her assistant." Thoughts?...

Two of my favourite Full Moon flicks, Dollman and Demonic Toys, have been given the Blu-ray treatment by the folks at 88 Films. Already owning the pair on DVD we take a look at these new releases to see how they compare and if the new Blus are worthy of an upgrade…
Dollman
Stars: Tim Thomerson, Jackie Earle Haley, Kamala Lopez, Humberto Ortiz, Nicholas Guest, Judd Omen, Frank Collison | Written by Chris Roghair | Directed by Albert Pyun
Former funnyman, turned TV stalwart, turned action star, Tim Thomerson had already made a name for himself in the Empire Pictures/Full Moon franchise Trancers before spoofing the very same character and his take no crap persona in Dollman for one of my favourite directors, Albert Pyun.
Brick Bardo (Thomerson) is a traveller from outer space who is forced to land on Earth. Though regular sized on his home planet, he is doll-sized here on Earth,...

Brendon Ayanbadejo celebrates the Ravens' win
Birthday shoutouts go to Alice Cooper, who is 65, and George Romero is 73. The Ricki Lake Show has been canceled after one season, and expect an announcement about The Jeff Probst Show soon. 15 life lessons we learned from drag queens Linda Lavin will return to series TV as the mother of Sean Hayes in his upcoming sitcom. Russell Simmons talks to Superbowl Champ Brendon Ayanbadejo. And this just in.
The Superbowl broke another ratings record this year. Update: Final numbers show it was down this year. As for me, I was busy switching between marathons of Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Golden Girls and Murder She Wrote. It got so dizzying I half expected to see Bea Arthur on the bridge of the Enterprise. But I did manage to see a baby-faced Neil Patrick Harris asking Jessica Fletcher for help. Spoiler: He was framed.

Last month, as the fate of ABC's Gcb hung in the balance, we were worried it would become a member of the "Gone Too Soon" club, TV shows that were snuffed out before they had a chance to flourish, or at least before we had a chance to grow tired of them.
Sadly, Gcb has gone to that big Upn in the sky, where it can run happily in the meadow with the likes of Firefly, Pushing Daisies, and Manimal.
While we mourn Gcb's loss, let's take a look at more shows that were ended too quickly. They were unappreciated at the the time, but they were either too good or too ... interesting ... not to have been offered the opportunity to flourish. Or flame out. Which is just as good.
The Comeback
HBO (June 5, 2005 – September 4, 2005)
Lisa Kudrow could have played it safe with her follow-up series to Friends, but instead...

If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

Whilst swirling stupidly in the nostalgic soup generated by the Full Moon’s announcement of a new “Puppet Master” film, I almost missed the life-affirming declaration that a new “Demonic Toys” movie was on the verge of release. However, I don’t know if my psyche or my social life could handle another low-budget gem featuring a plethora of pint-sized villains, but I’m certainly willing to give it a shot. I don’t know which otherworldly deity I’ve pleased over the past few years, but I need to figure it out post-haste. If I can get all of my sacrificial ducks in a row, perhaps I can conjure a “Shrunken Heads” sequel before the world comes to a Cusack-sized halt in 2012. In case you had a life in the early 90’s, “Demonic Toys” was the Peter Manoogian directed, David Goyer scripted horror flick which centered around the inhabitants of a haunted toy warehouse.

Gregory Michael, who plays "Kevin" in the homo-horror series Dante's Cove, doesn't know if he's coming back. No, this isn't some kind of bargaining ploy. He simply hasn't heard anything about appearing in the recently announced 4th season of the series.
He told Greginhollywood.com: "I havn't heard much.... I don’ have enough information for you about Dante’s. I just talked to Charlie about a week ago - as soon as the announcement came out and we’re all really excited. I’m having tea with (co-star) Tracy Scoggins.”
If here! hasn't contacted him or any of the other stars, you have to wonder if this is some kind of cost-cutting move on their part. Which is really strange as Dante's Cove doesn't have much of a budget -- or plot -- to begin with.
But damn is peoples 'purdy on that there show -- especially Kevin. We'll find...

Fans of the here! soft-core soap Dante's Cove can rejoice, as it's just been announced that the supernatural skinfest will return for a fourth season this fall:
"As Dante’s Cove returns with season four, television’s sexiest guilty pleasure is back with a vengeance. The most thrilling new season yet picks up after the near annihilation and total destruction of the Cove. Still reeling from the dark apocalypse that nearly destroyed the island, hidden secrets and new rivalries bring even more deadly consequences for the island’s sexy young residents. With mysterious new characters and an even steamier plot, season four shatters lives and contains a mind-blowing twist that leaves the island’s inhabitants shaken to their core."
I don't know if I'd consider myself a "fan", exactly, but I did DVR it and fast forward to the "good parts" (oh c'mon, you did the same thing). What I...
