If the Star Wars franchise is considered one of the greatest film series of all time in Hollywood, the credit goes to its creative mastermind George Lucas. The visionary director pioneered a sci-fi revolution with the epic space saga that spanned multiple decades to become a cult classic that will continue to remain evergreen for years to come.

While the franchise has seen many unforgettable films, there have been some prequels and sequels that have been preferred over others. But one particular film in the series which was specifically made for the holidays, was considered by Lucas himself as the franchise’s worst effort and one that he would want to erase from everyone’s memory including his own.

One of the most famous scenes in the Star Wars film saga almost didn’t happen at all. Although the movie was always going to end with Anakin Skywalker losing a few limbs, the stunt team behind Prequel Trilogy closer originally choreographed a different climax for Revenge of the Sith‘s final duel between brothers. In fact, an earlier version of the fight on Mustafar didn’t have Obi-Wan getting the high ground on Anakin at all; there was no cocky last leap from young Skywalker to seal his fate.
As Revenge of the Sith stunt coordinator Nick Gillard explained to Empire magazine, “Originally, they both land on the side of the lava flow and immediately start fighting. Anakin disarms Obi and grabs him by the throat. He’s about to chop his head off, but Obi sucks the lightsaber into his hand in a defensive move to try and block it,...

Here’s the thing about Emperor Palpatine: somehow, he always returns. First, Ian McDiarmid donned old-age makeup to play the role of Star Wars’ arch-villain in 1983’s Return Of The Jedi. Then, he returned 16 years later to play Palpatine again in the prequel trilogy – this time as the politician who would become the Emperor. And in 2019’s The Rise Of Skywalker, he came back one last time as the rotting, reincarnated ruler, ready to emerge from the shadows and execute his plan once and for all. Palpatine’s resurrection in Episode IX was a controversial point for some fans – not just since Luke and Vader vanquished the Emperor together at the end of the original trilogy, but because the galaxy’s age-old enemy hadn’t featured in the other sequel trilogy films.
But to McDiarmid himself, it makes sense. Speaking to Empire in a major new interview – celebrating 25 years of...

Ever since he first popped up in Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Mace Windu has been one of the baddest motherfu- sorry, baddest Jedi Masters in the business. Quite literally, in fact – Samuel L. Jackson has the letters ‘Bmf’ etched into the hilt of the lightsaber he kept. And so, since we never actually saw him perish, there have long been rumours – and wishes from fans – that maybe, just maybe, he didn’t die in Episode III – Revenge Of The Sith. Sure, his hand was sliced off by Anakin, and he was seriously sizzled by Palpatine’s Force lightning before being flung from a window into the Coruscant sky. But in the Star Wars galaxy, is that really enough to kill the coolest Jedi?
Not according to Jackson. For the new issue of Empire – celebrating 25 years of the Star Wars prequels – we fired off a few questions about the galaxy far,...

With the arrival of Revenge Of The Sith, Hayden Christensen thought his time as Anakin Skywalker was over, having picked up the baton from Jake Lloyd and plunged the Jedi Knight into darkness. But as it turned out, he wasn’t done quite yet. In recent years, Christensen has returned to Star Wars on screen in Obi-Wan Kenobi and most recently in Ahsoka, once again portraying Anakin (and Vader) in fights, flashbacks, Force-fuelled visions and more. Most notably, in Ahsoka, he got to play a version of Anakin that he’d never played before: his Clone Wars incarnation, previously only seen in animated form (and voiced by Matt Lanter) in The Clone Wars series.
As Christensen tells Empire in a major new interview – for our Star Wars prequels 25th anniversary issue – getting to star in live-action opposite Anakin’s one-time Padawan Ahsoka Tano was a big deal. “The scenes that...

The epic Darth Maul vs. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn duel. The thunderous Boonta Eve Podrace. The battle of Naboo. Talk about pressure. There are few villains in cinema as iconic as Darth Vader – recognisable from the briefest glimpse of his distinctive helmet, or the merest mechanical hiss of his respirator. So when Hayden Christensen signed on to play Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels, he took on a formidable task: presenting the man behind the mask. Across Episode II – Attack Of The Clones and Episode III – Revenge Of The Sith, Christensen showed us how exactly how the galaxy’s brightest hope turned from the light and plunged into total darkness – and through that time, his own Star Wars experience was a mix of light and dark too. After weathering years of criticism, he’s now been wholeheartedly embraced by the fandom.

Star Wars Prequel Cast Revisits The Trilogy 25 Years Later In Empire’s Anniversary Issue – Exclusive
Back in 1999, a brand new era in the galaxy far, far away came to life. George Lucas’ Star Wars prequels told an epic tale of fallen Jedi, forbidden romance, and the dismantling of democracy – assembling a whole new cast to inhabit his vast space-opera. The stars who entered that sandbox took a bold step, not only working at the frontier of digital filmmaking techniques, but conjuring a Star Wars saga that stood apart visually and tonally from the beloved originals. The likes of Hayden Christensen, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Liam Neeson and Ian McDiarmid became an entire generation’s set of Star Wars heroes (and villains) – and they all spoke to Empire for our epic new issue, celebrating 25 years of the trilogy.
For Ewan McGregor, the pressure of playing the young Obi-Wan Kenobi was eased by working alongside Liam Neeson – whose Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn suffers a noble end in...

The fall of Anakin Skywalker. The collapse of the Galactic Republic. The rise of Emperor Palpatine and creation of Darth Vader. It’s been 25 years since the Star Wars prequels changed everything – back in 1999, The Phantom Menace exploded into cinemas in an unprecedented cultural event. In its wake followed Attack Of The Clones and Revenge Of The Sith, unspooling George Lucas’ visionary, technically ambitious, and thematically-dense trilogy of tragedy. The reception at the time was unsteady; today, they’re hailed as a vital and beloved era of Star Wars history.
The new issue of Empire is an epic celebration of Episodes I, II, and III, revisiting the movies with the people who made them. Inside, we have brand new cast interviews, including major conversations – and exclusive photo shoots – with Anakin Skywalker himself, Hayden Christensen, and the one and only Emperor Palpatine, Ian McDiarmid; also speaking to Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman,...

The "Star Wars" prequels changed the game for the franchise, for better and worse. For one, they interrogated the idea of the Jedi as noble warrior monks by making them misguided space cops. But it also forever changed the way we look at lightsaber fights.
The original trilogy had memorabe lightsaber duels and cool stunts, of course, but the prequels reinvented them by turning the duels from samurai-esque, Mexican stand-offs into Shaolin monk fights with elaborate acrobatics. Characters jump around, twirl, and swing their lightsabers around with great intensity. Even if the sequel trilogy didn't really do all the acrobatics, they also featured more elaborate stunts in the duels (like the fantastic throne room fight in "The Last Jedi").
Unsurprisingly, making those stunts wasn't an easy task. In the official "The Making of Star Wars, Episode I - The Phantom Menace" book by Laurent Bouzereau and Jody Duncan, stunt coordinator Nick Gillard explained that,...

Back in the early '90s, television audiences were treated to "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" — which have now been retitled "The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones." These adventures explored the earliest adventures of everyone's favorite archeologist, long before he chose that as his profession.
The series is split with two actors playing Indy. The youngest, Corey Carrier, gets to examine Indiana Jones in his school days, whisked around the world by his parents with a tutor in tow. Those episodes put him in contact with everyone from Theodore Roosevelt to Pablo Picasso and were nothing short of charming. Sean Patrick Flanery took the role of Indiana Jones during his late teens and early 20s, a sliver of the part that was originated by River Phoenix in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade."
Originally, each episode was bookended with an intro and outro from a one-eyed, 80-year-old Indiana Jones played by George Hall.

There was a time, long before the "Star Wars" galaxy expanded to sequels, spin-offs, and TV series, where only one version of the infamous Master Yoda existed. In the original trilogy, Yoda was a puppet operated by Frank Oz — and even when "Star Wars" creator George Lucas came back with "The Phantom Menace," Oz reprised his performance as Yoda once more. Until then, Yoda was largely sedentary, and save for a few piggybacks on the shoulders of Luke Skywalker, entirely earthbound.
All that was set to change with the prequels, namely "Attack of the Clones." The new trilogy established the Jedi Order as a force to be reckoned with: during the Clone Wars, they're at the height of their hubris, but also the height of their military power. That meant that Yoda, the Grandmaster of the Jedi Council, would have to pull his weight in battle — as well as in...

"Revenge of the Sith" is the most violent "Star Wars" movie, and you can pinpoint the moment that portends the mood change. The movie opens with some fun swashbuckling as Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) try to rescue the kidnapped Chancellor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). The two Jedi wind up facing off against the Sith Lord Count Dooku (Christopher Lee).
After Anakin literally disarms the Count, he stands over him with his own Lightsaber in one hand and Dooku's in the other. At Palpatine's urging, he decapitates his defeated foe. There may only be two Sith, at any time and Anakin just cleared a spot for himself on the roster. As the film goes on and he becomes Darth Vader, he doles out many more brutal deaths.
According to Nick Gillard, lead stunt coordinator of the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy, Dooku's death was devised during choreography, not scripting.

There are a lot of reasons why some audiences think the "Star Wars" prequels don't work, but perhaps the biggest is that Anakin's turn to the dark side isn't all that convincing. There's no hint of Vader at all in "The Phantom Menace," then suddenly Anakin becomes a weird, creepy sociopath in "Attack of the Clones." Then George Lucas seemed to remember that Anakin's transformation into Vader was supposed to be a tragedy, so at the start of "Revenge of the Sith," he went back to giving us a version of Anakin that was somewhat likable.
What should've been a gradual descent into villainy over the course of three movies is instead all packed into a single film, which means Anakin's turn feels insanely rushed. He goes from a genuinely good guy worried about the safety of his pregnant wife to somebody who commits premeditated mass child murder in remarkably little time.

Stunt coordinators and performers are an essential part of the film industry. Someone has to block, stage, and perform the larger-than-life stunts that make the "movie magic" happen! Computer-generated imagery can't match the authenticity of the real thing. Even if special effects augment a sequence, it helps a scene's believability if it's (at least) partially shot with real stunts.
Lately, there has been an ongoing movement to show appreciation for stunt artists -- like when Helen Mirren told Indiewire that the Academy Awards should honor the craft. Currently, the Oscars don't have a category for best stunts, best stunt coordination, best stunt directing, or best stunt ensemble. Although the Screen Actors Guild Awards have awards in these categories, other televised award shows like the BAFTAs still don't recognize these talented professionals.

"The Phantom Menace" isn't the most popular "Star Wars" movie, and in a lot of ways, the long-awaited prequel and first theatrical series entry since "Return of the Jedi" wound up being upstaged by "The Matrix" and its revolutionary action techniques in 1999. However, despite its many flaws, "Phantom Menace" does feature one of the most memorable lightsaber fights in "Star Wars" history. It's the two-on-one duel that pits the Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and his master, Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson), against the double-bladed lightsaber-wielding Sith Lord Darth Maul (Ray Park).

This Star Wars article contains spoilers.
Since his debut in The Phantom Menace, Darth Maul has demanded the attention of Star Wars fans everywhere. In 1999, Maul looked unlike any villain that had come before in the saga, and the movie’s high-energy lightsaber duel is still one of the most memorable parts of the Prequel Trilogy. It’s unfortunate, then, that Maul was originally created by George Lucas as a one-off character, present only to re-establish the threat of the Sith.
But you can’t keep a good character down. Maul returned in The Clone Wars season 4 to introduce even more chaos to the galaxy. Infamously unkillable, his obsession with killing Obi-Wan Kenobi and reuniting with Palpatine kept him going for much of the galactic conflict and well after the rise of the Empire.
Maul has been a Sith apprentice, a ranting hermit, and a powerful crime lord throughout his strange and storied life.

With the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the decades-spanning Skywalker Saga finally comes to a close, but for the fans out there who’ll defend Lucasfilm’s Prequel Trilogy to the hilt, the bigger moment this month might be the long-awaited explanation for one of the most heavily memed lines in Revenge of the Sith.
Any longtime fan of the franchise likely needs no reminding of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s famed “high ground” moment. The line comes at the climax of the Jedi’s heated duel with Anakin Skywalker. After the pair fight it out over a glowing river of lava, Obi-Wan leaps onto a nearby hill, before telling Hayden Christensen’s character:
“It’s over Anakin, I have the high ground.”

Asking “Star Wars” fans to name the best lightsaber fight in the franchise’s history would yield a handful of results (expect to see Darth Maul vs. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon from “The Phantom Menace” picked numerous times), but it appears there was at least one franchise-defining fight that never made it to theaters. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “Star Wars” stunt coordinator Nick Gillard reveals the best lightsaber fight of George Lucas’s prequel trilogy was cut out of “Revenge of the Sith” by the filmmaker himself.
The removed lightsaber fight took place in “Revenge of the Sith” when Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) is escaping from General Grievous and has to encounter a handful of the villain’s bodyguards. Each body guard is carrying a double-sided weapon with deadly electrical tips. Lucas’s original script had Obi-Wan fighting off the guards with his lightsaber. The scene was revised for the...

He's the one who buys it from behind a tank periscope in Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade and has also served as stunt coordinator for all three Star Wars prequels as well as Timur Bekmambetov's Wanted and Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. Such credits and more deservedly make Gillard a worthy candidate to direct his own movie someday and thankfully that day won't be far of with the production of the new ensemble action movie, The Order, slated to start in January. Two weeks ago, we got to go to the Blu-ray trailer luanch of the brand new blu-ray box set for George Lucas’ Star Wars: The Complete Saga. Those present were Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett), Anthony Daniels (C-3P0) Producer Robert Watts, and Nick Gillard and later in the day, Ilm Digital Artist John Goodson and Visual Effects Supervisor Bill George.
During the panels, we asked about further changes to the Blu-ray and if we’d see any changes in the movie and never got a definitive answer. Well it turns out that there has already been one big change spotted by the chaps over at Cbm who have found new footage from the Blu-ray which shoes a CGI Yoda where a puppet used to be in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
